Love these Mac Pro Videos, keep it up!
Today I bought a 2015 iMac for $60. The ad just said “Apple monitor” and had a really blurry picture. I took the risk and went to a house deep in the woods. I was shocked to actually see an iMac, and then to be handed this iMac, in exchange for $60. Apparently it was their dads that died. It has a firmware password that I’m dealing with tho.
I just needed to share this
The Trammell lucky find. Should make a video
Sounds like you got a VERY stolen iMac man. Probably was part of a burglary where the robber didn’t know much about the device and sold for fast cash. The owner likely reported it as stolen and had the firmware locked.
The Trammell reinstall mac os, u can search recovery mode on the internet for you mac
的茍且生活JJ son I can’t get into recovery mode. The firmware password prevents any access at all
Ryan Pavey I thought that but, I didn’t get the vibe. It was an old lady. Idk
Keep up to good work man!!! Need more of these videos!!!
Great video. Curious. What did you do with the 2009 Mac Pro you flashed to a 5,1? Anyway, thanks for simplifying the process of getting an NVME to work on one of these machines. I have a 2010 Mac Pro as well and could not for the life of me figure out how to get this to work. Now I'm thinking a fresh install of Mojave and then a Time Machine restore should do the trick in my sitch, but think I will stick with my Samsung 845DC Evo for now. Plenty fast for me. I'll be waiting for the video you make on how to get Catalina on this since it Apple is no longer supporting it. 👍
I'm so glad I found this channel, I'm doing the same stuff you have been doing as well, just got 128gb of RAM in my 5,1. Oddly my geekbench score was lower but my C4d render times are cut in half.
Geekbench will be lower as it's triple channel ram not quad so usually benches higher with 3 or 6 DIMMs
Wow. Crazy read/write speed improvement! I had two Samsung EVO in SATA bays 1&2 running in RAID 0, giving me a decent 500MB/s RW. But I followed your idea and jammed a PCIe NVMe drive in there, now getting 1350/1500MB/s RW. Insane! Lexar NM600 (70$) with Lycom DT-120 (20$). Thanks Luke!
Hey Luke!
May I know, what keyboard you use? It looks nice.
Thank you!
Did you update your bootrom to version 144.00.00.00? Should help with many NVMe related issues
could you please detail the process so I can update the bootrom
rbnjr you just need to download and install macOS Mojave on your Mac Pro 5,1.
Love this video!! I found two cheese graters for around $30 each and as long as the vids don’t get too high, I’m buying one!
Great video Luke. Thank you for sharing what did and didn’t work as you build for us the ULTIMATE 2010 Mac Pro. Much appreciated. Do you feel that nVme drive is making a difference over a regular SATA based SSD?
Also, are you having any other issues with that USB3 card?
Hi Luke, when will you get the new Mac Pro 2019? it would be interesting a review from you and what customisation you would get.
Thank you for all your work. I love your channel.
I had 3 drives die within a week's time on my 2010 5,1. 2 of them were Western Digital Blue drives. I replaced them with 3- 2TB Black Magic Black drives. It ran OK for a few weeks and then all of a sudden, I wasn't able to see all of the drives. I ended up giving up one of the drives (I think it was my 1TB Seagate that I use for my boot drive), but it was really strange that it happened. I want to pick up a USB 3.0 card too.
Eight hours?! Ouch! Nice work, though. I hope that your cMP works great for you for a long time!
New on your channel, like the Mac pro video's. Thanks.
Thank you soooo much couldnt get windows to work and switch without spending tooooo much time thanks👍
Howdy.
I recently purchased an used Mac Pro and been following your videos for a while regarding upgrades. Some good stuff in your channel, congrats! (y)
In what comes to boot switching on Macs with video cards that aren´t boot screen compatible, what are your thoughts on the Boot Runner software? (USD 29.95)
It was helpful, in that it you had the same issues i have run into. So it is just validates issues run into upgrading. So thank you.
Have you tried rEFInd boot manager? I think you can use it to point to different partitions or drives with different OSes, like for a triple boot setup.
You can get bootcamp to work, at least from a sata SSD. You have to install a very specific version of the bootcamp drivers (originally made for this exact mac) and then force an upgrade to the latest, "Unsupported" version of the drivers, released with the iMac Pro. I've got it working fine and the best part is, the tray icon remains and even now supportbooting from APFS volumes because of the forced upgrade. I'll reply to this comment if I find any more info.
I found somewhat of a "workaround" for the bootcamp issue with Mojave. Basically I needed to keep an install of Sierra around for some of my Pro Audio programs, so I'm able to use the bootcamp option in Windows to boot into Sierra, and then from there, boot to another partition for Mojave (you could create just a tiny install of Sierra just for this use if you have no other use for it). I'm using an RX580 graphics card, so it was important to find a way to get back and forth easily without using the ALT option at boot.
Very good and useful video, thanks a ton ! 👍🏻✅
Your video was informative. I have done similar hardware upgrades to each of my beloved Mac Pro "Cheese Graters" and find the following: Installing a PCIe NVMe SSD to use as a boot drive does not speed MacOS boot-up time. There is very little boot time difference from a MacOS boot SSD in a SATA bay or on an optical bay connector. I happily use PCIe NVMe SSD for video editing and the like, where its higher speed does provide measurable advantage. If speed and low cost is your objective, your PCIe USB 3.0 adapter will work just fine with the cheapest multi-bay SSD docking station you can find. Best is the enemy of good enough.
Very interesting series. My mid-2012 5,1 Mac Pro (that I bought in 2012) has an upgraded 3.46 Ghz 6-core, 48 GB RAM, an AMD RX580 8-GB video card, 6TB of storage in 4 HDD (2 of which are hybrids), 2 optical drives, and one 240 GB SSD on an adaptor card similar to what you showed as well as PCIE expansion cards for USB3 and eSATA. My time machine is an external drive connected via eSATA. One HDD is the Mac boot drive with all of my Mac programs, one HDD is for Bootcamp with Windows 10-64bit, one HDD is for extra windows files, and the remaining HDD is empty for the time being. I use the SSD for windows backups. The Mac has been a very good dual platform computer for me.
I have the same computer with a similar setup, only my Windows drive isn't an SSD. My Mojave drive is an SSD in a PCIe slot. I have no trouble at all getting a boot selection screen, but I think I first had to install WIndows 7 on the Windows side and then upgrade it to 10. 10 isn't officially supported, but the Mac doesn't know you're running 10 if you start with 7.
For a working Windows 10, you have to install it direcly in Legacy Mode via ISO burned on DVD because all MacPros 5,1 (2010-2012) don't support Windows 10 EFI or BootCamp (which is EFI) installations.
Great video Luke! I bought the FebSmart PCI Express USB 3.0 card... I can't find the mac driver. any suggestion?
“Follow along at homeable?” I like it!
Enjoying your Mac Pro 5,1 vids! I have 2 I'm building now (well, one's built). Is there a way to have my NVMe show up as an internal drive and not as an external drive or does the PCI force this to show up as an external? Just curious... Thanks!
..more to the point -- when my machine sleeps sometimes the NVMe drops off and I have to restart to get the drive to show up again... a bit frustrating..
Thanks for the informative video. I tried the USB 3.0 adapter recommended. It doesn’t recognize usb 3.1 devices even with a USB-C to USB adapter. I make look onto the Sonnet. It seems to work properly.
What are your GPU plans for the future? I'm thinking about slapping in an RX 580. Are you more concerned with gaming or video processing?
Use OWC SoftRaid to use raids on high sierra and Mohave.
I abandoned having a bootable raid and used an ssd for mac booting and bootcamp.
This is all on a 2008 mac pro 3,1.
I used the caldigit usb 3.1 card
I really love what you are doing and I wish I could do the same here at home in Italy, ut its not so easy
usb 3.0 cards don't require molex power, it's only for the extra voltage for charging, mine has a molex but it's not required to use it
I honestly like Luke's videos and I dont even own a apple product. It is really good quality and I like his on camera personality. I believe this channel will however get a lot more support if he branches out and start reviewing other laptops and pc related components.
Great videos! I have 5,1. So install an NVMe SSD via a PCIe slot, a metal-capable GPU (RX580; 8Gb) then Mojave onto that SSD?
I can use the remaining SATA slots for storage; can those be made RAID?
Yes. I'm gonna try 4x Samsung EVO in RAID 0 in the SATA slots next.... :)
Hi Luke! Now i want to buy a Mac for photo and video editing and music production. Can u suggest some of the models i can buy?And my budget is tight for Macs likes about 500$.And thank u for these great videos!
Where do you get your ssd's? and what would you recommend for a "newbie" that wants to start in this business?
dude you read my mind, litterly Bought one with 9TB as well and planning to install pcie ssd's
Something I would do is actually Fusion Drive the 500GB NVMe SSD and the 1TB SATA SSD. That gives a high capacity and extremely fast storage.
I just want a mac 5,1 to use as a case for a pc because that machined aluminium looks dope.
I tried to install a NVMe SSD P2. M.2 Crucial with 2 TB, and it didn't work at all, I had an adaptor and I had a bootable USB drive with Mojave, I often got warnings about the Mojave installation being damaged and I downloaded it from the Apple website and also from Apple store! I have a Mac Pro late 2013. I also tried to book from the time machine and the system can't find the disk! I really appreciate your insights.
Would have really liked to see the speeds of that raid0 and how much the pcie gen2 limits it
Since the pcie sockets are 2.0 , with that nvme adapter (x4) max speed would be a theorical 2.0 GB/s , so I think he's already achieving maximum possible speed even without the raid0
I’ve really been thinking about picking up one of these 2009 through 2012 Mac Pros. Now I’m kind of reluctant since they are not on the list for the new Catalina operating system. Still probably the best bang for your buck Mac experience just going to be limited to Mojave.
As long as you have a decent graphics card I guess it will be able to run Catalina with some hack like the DodDude one, I can only guess that it's coming
These things are very popular so people will work long and hard to get everything running. Heck the DOS dude has Mojave running for the old Mac Pro 3,1 from 2008.
Could you use a boot manager like Refined or clover to switch between windows and mac?
gary reardon In Mac Pro, you use bootcamp
I'm curious as to why you would want to install you OS on the raid. 1 solitary ssd should be enough to access your applications at a acceptable speed. Wouldn't you want leave as much of your fast storage for media?
Are you going to to add the titan ridge thunderbolt 3 card?... It works..with a little work around.
Hey Luke, since you have a 2012 15” Unibody I would like to see if you are having Mojave BootCamp Setup issues with it. Personally, I cannot install BootCamp. I get stuck at download support software. I also had issues making a usb installer: not enough space. Something to do with how FAT handles files over 4GB. Would love a video investigating this.
Luke, just out of curiosity where are U from?
Luke, can you comment on using the new Samsung 980 ssd for a MacBook Pro 2015?
Question I have El Capitan on my Mac Pro and want to upgrade to the mvme drives will I need to upgrade to Mojave to get them to work? And also where can I even find a Mojave os they don’t have it in the Mac store ??
Hey Luke. What about virtualisation? In my experience, that‘s the easiest way to get Windows running on my Mac. It runs quiet smoothly with no issues and I can switch between macOS and Windows in seconds. Also file transfer is no problemo. Maybe give it a try?!
He want to play some games, so boot camp is the best way.
Hi Luke,
the link to the ssd nvme adapter seems dead could you give me the supplier and model of the card you are using?
thank you
There is a thunderbolt add on card, the only downside is: 1 port works, and it needs to be plugged in no boot up.
Can you do a tutorial on bootcamp on the 5,1 Mac Pro? Can you get Windows 10 on a bootcamp partition?
NVMe worked great. Feb smart card wouldn’t work though. Link you provided says not for Mac. Gotta return and probably get the inateck.
While I don't know if either of these would work they are worth a look into.
With the installation of windows on an 'external' device one can use a VM or PC and use an app to clone the drive to the nVME SSD, but you said boot didn't work. There is a video on yt titled "how to install windows onto an external SSD" but I'd imagine you've seen it.
As to boot switching you can use Clover from tonymacx86 as a boot drive selector, and even make it look like the default Mac selector. This is what I do and it works for both macOS, windows and Linux
Right, as I’ve stated on my tweet last week, I have gone though all of this an am willing to help you through these issues. Tip for your next step: Try flashing your R9 28)x / HD79XX with an Efi enabled Rom. These Roms have been taken from Saphire 7990s which werde made for Mac. Some HDMI port may stop function but most of them stay the same since the standards were mostly the same. Then you can switch between Volumes much quicker. Then, you may want to keep this card as a spare card. Trust me on this, if you ever have to troubleshoot this machine it is a necessity to have it.
As I’ve said earlier : i am willing to give you some advice on how to proceed much quicker if you want to.
You will be looking into Upgrading CPU and Ram next I’ll guess. This is the hardest part.
Anyways, keep up the hard work. This machine will take a lot of your time, trust me. I’ll be your masterpiece afterwards ;)
*could You please tell me what would be speeds if...... GENUINE Apple RAID card would be installed?* I got such a card - but no sucha speedy SSDs
You could try rEDInd, it has saved my life when I use multiple OS installations on Mac.
How do you feel about possibly not being able to update to Catalina with the 5,1?
Can you use powered external drives? I was hoping to use 3 externals on that card for Plex.
You should change the backplane so you can get Sata 3 for the hard drives
are there usb type c or even thunderbolt cards? Thinking about buying one and then hook it up to a lenovo usb c dock
Luke can the 2010 5,1 mac pro boot from the m.2 port from the airport card location? I thought you would know
On my Mac Pro 2010. Would using a X16 adapter be faster than a X4? Looking for the fastest data rate
I am a 5,1 user who did the upgrades and i want to run Windows. Can you do a tutorial on that?
You should use something like rEFIt. These boot managers can do so much more than Apple's built-in solution.
Ábel Madaras you got here before me
Does your NVME M.2 show up as an external hard drive? Trying to figure out how to get it to show as an internal with no luck yet.
The Sonnet Allegro USB3-PRO-4P10-E provides four USB 3.0 ports that put out 7.5 watts per port, which is enough to drive most USB powered external drives (the current WD 4TB external drives need about 5 watts). Just sayin.
QUESTION:
Hey Luke, congratulation to your channel. I like your videos so much. I have one question about Macbooks and i hope that you (or someone else here) can anser this. I cant find informations about this on google or somewhere else. Is it possible to put a display with a better resolution in a Macbook pro 2012 13" non retina. 1280x800 sucks a bit for today standard. I dont need retina but i would be happy with a bit more.
Keep it up. Greetings from Germany
No, the display connectors and hardware aren't designed to be upgraded
Interesting project
I don't need windows but i'll have to stick with High Sierra because of software i use for work. What's the best thing to do?
I tried the linked PCIe USB 3.0 card, the card showed up in system report but wouldn't recognize any devices. Has anyone else had this problem with this specific card? The Q&A on the Amazon listing also stated that this card was incompatible with Mac.
Luke, how did you get the 290x to power? Isnt the 6 pins onboard to weak?
I have a Radeon 280x 4 and 6 for my card. I need that card to power my Apple LED monitor.
I have a problem with my both mac book pro 15'' 2018, both macs burned their motherboard, this is incredible because they are relatively new the first one burned 8 months ago and the other today, in the support center what they told me the first time is that it should be turned off instead of suspending. Anyone have any feedback about it.
I have two 12 core, 4.1 Mac Pros, 64gb ram, AMD VEGA FE liquid cooled GPU'S and 40TB Raid. plus 512gb M.2 Boot drives on PCIE adaptor cards. both running Mojave OS. (I also have a 16 core Windows PC so don't use bootroom). love em, my 10 1/2 year old Mac's just work, editing 10 bit 4K on a 4K timeline with ease.
You can definitely switch back from Win10 to Mojave using the Bootcamp tray tool... but... you have to install the Bootcamp utilities for the iMac Pro using some tool like brigadier, then when it's listing the Mac volumes, don't pick the first one as it's the recovery partition :) The tray rightclick menu won't work as it tries to set the recovery partition, but inside the utility, you can select the right drive, restart and done... I have a 5,1 Mac Pro with Mojave 10.14.6 a 1TB NVME PCIe SSD for macOS and a 512GB SATA SSD for Bootcamp and I can switch back and forth nicely.
I installed Mojave on a single ssd and moved the home folder and apps to the raid array... it was pretty snappy
I see Luke Miani, I click and like
9:06 If Apple is breaking compatibility with their older machines, you might as well build a hackentoch right?
Hi Luke
I upgrade my MacPro (early 2008) with 1tb NVMe (pcie) but it doesn't boot from there, would you please help me to fix this issue.
I'm using Catalina latest OS
thanks in advance...
Hi Luke , i'm an owner of a mac pro early 2009, 1 slot cpu ..... updated the to 5,1 . I have installed High sierra , looking forward to upgrade CUP and Ram and graphic card as suggested on your video ( thank You !!) ... once installed high sierra Wifi is not working ( no hardware installed ) any help on this matter ?? thanks and sorry to bother
To me, the only real question is, performance-wise, what is this Mac Pro comparable to in the current product line? If it's just a Mini or mid-range iMac, is it worth it? TIA
edit: where I live, this model is closer to $500 in a rather minimal configuration. Still worth it?
second edit: new subscriber thanks to this Mac Pro series ;-)
I'll talk about how it compares to other macs once I've finished the upgrades, but as of this video it's similar multicore to a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" or 2018 MacBook Pro 13", and the graphics with the R9 290x are similar to an iMac with a 570X roughly
Hey, I use bootchamp to reboot on bootcamp from Mojave. The only thing you have to do is disable the SIP (booting on recovery and disable from terminal) and when you are on windows, just reboot and the mac restart on MacOs !
Bootrom 140.x is needed to use a NVMe drive as boot drive
Luke, Did you ever try BootChamp to switch between Mac & Windows Drives. I am setup now and the only issue I have is the Bless Fail. Which I know I can disable the SIP will resolve this issue. Has anyone else try this solution for Mojave?
Luke can we get a tutorial on what you did?
I am looking to update my 2011 imac hard drive and DVD rom to SSD and configure it to raid 0. Will I able to install Mac os and speed advantage over it?
You cannot install Mac OS on a RAID 0 Configuration, if you install SSD and it has a OS (For example: Mac OS High Sierra), then you cannot do a RAID 0 on it as it won't work if there is an OS onto it, if your replacing your DVD Drive with SSD, and you didn't install OS onto the Secondary SSD, then you can RAID 0 the SSD, but if that drive fails you lose everything, and also you won't be able to install a OS onto the Secondary Drive.
Just in time I was looking for a good video
Hey do u know why after the installation of the new gpu the screen wont show?
Install the Bootcamp drivers for the iMac Pro using a tool called Brigadier and you can use the Bootcamp control panel in Windows again to switch back to macOS. It works more than fine for me :)
What’s the possibility of a Catalina patcher and beyond? And how easy are they to use?
F Mojave and Catalina on my 5,1 , not giving up my Mac OS server 5.6.3 - websites, vpn, wiki, etc for Tim Cook crappy 5.8 to just monitor my device (not helpful) Tim Cook is off his rocker
I didn’t think you could use an NVME drive at all as a boot drive on a Mac Pro, I may have to give this a go now!
You need to update the bootrom to version 140.X
I make that same sound when things work!!
Is there a way to run big sur on these old mac pros?
You can install Windows 10 on a external drive on an Apple computer , but it is really tricky , and you can't install it on a partition , it has to be the complete hard drive , because there's a problem in the structure of partitions between windows and macOS (them both try to be "the main" partition) but of course they are different architectures so that's one of the problems.
*you* : what could go wrong?
Me *stares*
*you* what
Me *everything*
Can you use NVME drives in 10.8 Mountain Lion?
I have a total of 43TB on my 2012 MacPro; 1TB NVME boot drive, 2TB SSD scratch drive, 8tb x2 (Raid1), and 12tb x2 (Raid1). Used as a Capture One / PS editor.
Do u Mac journal format or fat. On the mme drive
Ey luke.. just use rEFInd, it will make your life a lot easier when switching between windows and macos. It pretty much acts like a replacement for the boot menu
BocuD
I think that it is useless.
rEFInd allows you to tap m for macOS and w for Windows without a boot screen. It works well on my 4,1 with Vega 56.
^^
