Thanks buddy. A lot more straight forward than I expected. Doing a Honda C70 clone. Engine is total Honda duplicate from 2002. On a “Bahama” bike. I’ll post once it runs.
i have an 86 honda trx70 atv. it runs great, but sometimes i like to test my luck on steep hills and washouts. the of course, the enine gets hot. i am very carefull not to overheat it though. but when it gets really hot it starts bogging away at aboit 1/8th throddle. i have done tons of work to flatheads but almost never any to ohv. i asked my buddy if it cpould be the valves and he said yes but don't do it because you have to practically strip the entire engine to do so. thanks for making the vid
That's awesome, dude. I was only 16 when I posted this video. Being young has nothing to do with what you can do. There are plenty of old folks that can't do mechanical stuff. The main thing that holds people back is they are scared to try. Every expert was a beginner at some point. Get out there, take stuff apart, look at it, and figure out how it works.
Unless the manufacturer said otherwise, use the factory specifications for the tappet adjustment. And with any performance cam, make sure the check the valve to piston clearance to ensure no contact occurs.
You can check the clearance just by getting a feeler guage and seeing if it fits snugly between the tappet and valve stem. If they are in spec you don't need to adjust anything, just screw the tappet cover back on. Valve adjustments are just a part of maintenance. It's not a bad idea to check them every once in a while. But if it starts and runs good you probably don't need to worry about it.
I've been in my shed 3 hours a day for the last week trouble shooting why my pitty doesn't start and I adjusted the valves, the mixture screw, the jets and the timing of literally everything and finally today I got it started and I don't even need to be watching this but if you know that feeling you get when you've successfully fixed your bike then you'll know
Good job! Fixing stuff on your own is something to be proud of. Just gotta push yourself to try a little more and you'll be on your way. Even seasoned experts did what they do for the first time once.
They are color coded so I know what size they are from across the room. Black tape are wrenches ending in 0 or 5. 5mm, 10mm, 15mm etc. No tape means sizes ending in 1 and 6. White tape is 2 and 7. Red is 3 and 8. Blue is 4 and 9. Then it starts over again. Makes it easy to find tools.
If you have done the adjustment correctly and the noise persists, then I would suggest you look at the cam chain tension. When it is loose the chain will slap around and make a lot of noise. Valve adjustment would not affect this. If it is not that, you may have a bent valve or other internal damage, but I would say that is very unlikely.
your videos were a fantastic help to me when i was restoring the bike.its like showroom i know youd like it.just had to tell you that.please respond to my question it would be much appreciated thanks
Plug is fouling because oil is somehow getting in the cylinder. That also explains the smoke. Check your compression. Then add a few drops of oil in the spark plug hole and check the compression again. If it goes up, your rings need to be replaced. If it's the same, replace the valve seals. It is more likely to be the rings. If the cylinder measures within spec, just hone it and get a new set of rings and possibly a piston. Let me know before you order parts, I have some new stuff I never used.
@penna171980 Yes but the Z50's are all 4 strokes. And no there are no push rods, the Z50 uses an overhead cam. The Honda QA50 used a pushrod motor and very early Honda Cubs used a similar motor.
I believe the profess will be very similar for your bike. You may have to remove some bodywork to get to the adjusters but the adjustment process should be the same. Make sure the engine is cold and make sure the cam is at TDC compression. As for the clearance, 0.003" will probably work just fine but check the service manual to be sure.
I don't know what you mean by segments, but the piston is quite simple to replace. Follow my 88 kit installation video. It will be the same procedure for the stock parts, everything will just be smaller.
I think he meant 80cc raptor. Which are notorious for tightening up intake valves especially when ridden hard. BTW... blasters do have A valve... although there's no adjustment.🤔😁
I suppose if that's the case then there is indeed a hole into the crankcase. I would get a stud (just a long threaded stick) and thread it in there with some epoxy on the threads to seal it up. Then use a nut on the stud to secure the left cover. Try to clean up the threads in the case as much as you can because the cleaner it is the better the epoxy will stick.
@Nick75987 it may have tight valves, which means there is not enough clearance between the top of the valve an the adjusting screw which will not allow the valves to close fully
More power, or gearing. Taller gearing will give more top speed, lower gearing will give better acceleration. Gearing gives you one or the other. Power combined with proper gearing gives you both.
@TheAlexManVideos Nice video.Careful with adjusting the valves too tight, specially the exhaust. THat will burn the valve as it does not sit on the valve seat for long enough to dissipate the heat.
Use a 17mm box wrench, 6 pt preferrably but a 12 pt will probably work fine, then crank away. That cap is supposed to be tightened to 10 ft-lbs. If you crank it on tight it will be very diffiult to remove. That's probably what happened to you.
@TheAlexManVideos mr alex thanks for uploading such an informative video what is the name of the tool you used for the measurement of valves and what difference does different value of this tool make on the top speed of bike
My dad is giving me his 1995 Honda Passport as a gift...however, he says that two of the power windows do not work...and the air conditioning doesn't work either. Can they be replaced or fixed without taking it to a shop? I really cant afford to have them fixed.
good instruction - but way better you can adjust the valves by using the special tool from daytona for valve adjusting. Costs just a few bucks but is much more comfortable.
hey alex, i need a little bit of help. i have an 00 xr 70 and it runs like crap, it spits and sputters, and when you really roll the throttle it back fires and puffs out a small amount of brownish smoke. and at an idle it will idle all over the place and sometimes will even stall itself out, ive cleaned the card perfectly, and adjusting the jet and idle screw will not do anything, im hoping adjusting the valves will fix it but please let me know what you think of it.
do you have an oil change video on this engine? i have done it hundreds of times but when i got under there today i could not remember wich bolt is the drain plug. level one or angle one?
1st. Excellent filming and content. Thank you! I am going to go do my valves now that you've helped me understand how simple it really is. I have a feeling that ticking sound I hear is the valves too loose?
hi..very informative video of valves adjustment..what do you think is the best or appropriate clearance for honda wave 100? i got stage 1cam from mtrt, everything else are stock..,if you have an idea or if youve encounter something like this before,,,,,,thanks
Thanks fora helping man but i have a honda c50 and have put a whole different engine on it..I have a CDI cylinderhead..do i have 2 do exactly the same things?
I think that's impossible. The threads would fail long before you poked a hole through the case. I may be wrong but I think your problem is elsewhere. Can you confirm that oil is indeed pouring out of that exact hole?
hi alex your video helps alot but i want to ask something i got a honda c50 6v and i want to adjust my valves since i am an amuter it's the same thing like your motor?
i have recently bought a fully working honda vision met-in (1992) i was wondering if you knew how i would be able to derestrict it and replace a wing mirror? Thanks, Michael.
I have a 85 honda elite 250,having back fire when compression is going down, changed the spark plug still have the issue,I use high octaine gasoline (91),can you help thank you
Nice video, where did you find that feeler gauge I have been looking every where for one like that I need a 0.05 mm (0.002 in) for my 65 ct200 trail 90
i have a 70 cc engine honda it looks just like this one. it needs some adjustment but the only way i see to get to them is to take off the fuel tank and skid plare. would it be easier to just take the enine out? i have had the fuel tank off before, and it is a pain in the ass! but the skid plate is only 4 bolts holding it on. would it be easier to just pull the enine?
If they were tight before you might notice a little bit of noise after correct adjustment. If it is obviously not right, chances are you didn't adjust them with the cam in the right position and now the clearance is way too high.
where canu get the measuring thin i have a 80 does it make a difference. by the way why dont u get a service shop or somithng u are well good in moterbikes mate
Dude, I have no idea but I doubt it. If it's anything a CRF450R motor it uses shims and buckets. I would suggest you get the manual or take the bike to a shop.
Alex i have a 1979 honda c70 i changed the head and cylinder because it was siezed.it was running perfect with the other head but from i changed it its chokeing up and im not getting full power.i took it apart and resealed it incase it was getting air from some of the seals but its still the same and the timeing is fine.the carb was good so it couldnt be it.have you any ideas what mite be causing this?
1981 C70 Passport 2300 miles. Seems to have a flat spot from 25 mph on. I have not adjusted valves in 2 years. Would this be a place to start? Also, seems to RPM up with in neutral with the choke NOT on. When you put into first, it jumps. Starts easily and idles well, but has lost getup and go. Top speed is about 38mph. Suggestions?
What type of head is on that bike? My engine looks EXACTLY the same and yesterday it seized up and ont turn over at all. Should I fix it or just buy a 150cc engine?
does this valve adjustment apply on a different camshaft? my engine is fitted with camshaft ones with a higher lift and duration.. my engine sounds like a ticking clock..
ok so i have a Chinese replica z50 and i think the valves need an adjustment, everything is the same from the vid on the motor, but do you need to take out the oil to do this?
It adjusts the clearance between the rockers and the valves. Too loose and they rattle a lot, too tight and the valves hang open and you'll lose power.
hi i have a z50r and every couple of days i have to replace the spark plug because it gets oil fouled. also it blows a bit of smoke. wat should i do to fix it. will replacing the rings and gaskets do anything. also maybe the valve guides? thanks
my dad has even seen this video but he lives by the saying"if it ain't broke don't fix it" and he won't let me adjust mine. he thinks if i try to adjust them everything will go wrong and there will be a lot of problems. it runs like it just pulled off the showroom floor but i have had mine 8 years riding it almost daily and never even thought twice about the valves. should i do it behind his back or just leave it?
If i get top dead centre with a bit of wobble on the fly wheel, i can not get my valve adjusters to a similar position. The exhaust one is very loose with loads of play and the intake only will be at spec.
Both valves should have a very small amount of play. If the exhaust valve is loose beyond the point you can adjust it, the valve may be bent and preventing the valve from closing fully. Perform a compression check.
Hey how do you find TDC with a inner rotor in the crf70 just put in a new TB88kit with race head and a Inner rotor kit but the valves are ticking WAY bad and i was gonna set them but i can't figure out TDC with this inner rotor from AHP
Hey I put the wrong size bolt on the bottom left of the ignition cover on my crf50 and it has punched through into the crank caseand now with the bolt it leaks oil, I've spoke to fast50s and they said it shouldn't be a problem. What do you think???
I thought of that to but my chain wasn't even on when i started my engine the first time after i installed it. Maybe it is a bent valve like you say, but i sure hope that it isn't to bad :s i didn't know what to do so i'm having it checked by a bikestore
I do not have a video showing this process. It is fairly involved. You must split the cases to do so which means removing the entire top end, clutch and shifter parts, and then pulling the two case halves apart.
TheAlexManVideos many thanks for your reply, and honesty on how to fix the problem, unfortunately someone had striped the splines on the kick start spindle and they tried to repair by drilling a hole through the spindle for the kick start lever and it goes on!! Now I've brought the Honda c50 ( 1971 model ) I just want to learn and fix things properly. The bike is 46 yrs old and there's been a lot of complete messers...
you just saved my 10 dollars... thanks man... The mechanic was saying that whole cam chain needs to be replaced because it is a bit loose
Thanks for sharing this, man. Makes it so simple. Read the Clymers manual but was still a little shaky on the process...until I've seen this!
I want to thank you..i got my z50r started because of you👍
You're welcome. That's awesome! Glad to help out.
Awesome.....good explanation on compression stroke and exhaust stroke............many tutorials skip how to tell which is which!
Thk ! Great video. At last, someone who knows how to place is camera.
13 years later and this is the only video that actually positioned the camera properly so i can see wth they are actually doing
Thanks buddy. A lot more straight forward than I expected. Doing a Honda C70 clone. Engine is total Honda duplicate from 2002. On a “Bahama” bike. I’ll post once it runs.
Very clear, concise, and informative. The C70 is going to be happy.
Thank You!
Just found your video. Great and detailed job. Nice to see both intake and exhaust done in detail. Very helpful thanks.
i have an 86 honda trx70 atv. it runs great, but sometimes i like to test my luck on steep hills and washouts. the of course, the enine gets hot. i am very carefull not to overheat it though. but when it gets really hot it starts bogging away at aboit 1/8th throddle. i have done tons of work to flatheads but almost never any to ohv. i asked my buddy if it cpould be the valves and he said yes but don't do it because you have to practically strip the entire engine to do so. thanks for making the vid
Wow, that thing looks to be the same one as when I was 5!!! I never thought I would see another one
Thankyou this helped me a lot I am 15 years old and I can do a lot of things but I have never done anything like this
That's awesome, dude.
TheAlexManVideos man I just rebuilt a Honda xr100 r and it was not as bad as I thought it would be I put a new piston rings and bearings

Thanks for sharing. For the frist time i have ajusted/set valves, and it worked.
Good job! Fixing stuff on your own is something to be proud of. Just gotta push yourself to try a little more and you'll be on your way. Even seasoned experts did what they do for the first time once.
Thanks this is the best video I found on how to do this you made it super easy to do
They are color coded so I know what size they are from across the room.

@penna171980 Yes but the Z50's are all 4 strokes. And no there are no push rods, the Z50 uses an overhead cam. The Honda QA50 used a pushrod motor and very early Honda Cubs used a similar motor.
@pugsonrugs No. The motor might burn a bit of oil. The older motors had only one valve seal. Only the exhaust valve had a valve seal.
Check spark timing, carb settings, and valve adjustments. Also check for solid electrical connections.
Thanks so much for this! Perfect camera angles to show exactly what is going on.
I believe the profess will be very similar for your bike. You may have to remove some bodywork to get to the adjusters but the adjustment process should be the same. Great Video! Now I feel comfortable tackling valve adjustment on my sons 80cc Yamaha Blaster.
Blasters don't have vales, they're two strokes.
I think he meant 80cc raptor. Which are notorious for tightening up intake valves especially when ridden hard. BTW... blasters do have A valve... although there's no adjustment.🤔😁
verry good , also very nice camera angle !
Very good clean job!!!!THANKS from NOR-CAL!!!!
No problem. Keep the old bikes running!
thanks alot!
you made it look like it was very simple and it is now that i know how to!
No worries. You speak English a heck of a lot better than I speak Portuguese. Piston and rings are easy to replace.
Thanks for this. My 110 needs this...looks like it should be exactly the same procedure.
@Nick75987 it may have tight valves, which means there is not enough clearance between the top of the valve an the adjusting screw which will not allow the valves to close fully
Thank you very much for this video very straightforward.
thanks,
i am thinking of getting a 72cc big bore kit which comes with piston and rings. i might also get two new valve seals as well.
More power, or gearing. Taller gearing will give more top speed, lower gearing will give better acceleration. Gearing gives you one or the other. Power combined with proper gearing gives you both.

We need more people like this on youtube and not 10 yr olds doing 2 ft wheelies and falling on their asses
Where did you find that feeler gauge? I need one that’s stiff like that except for the actual gauge part.
@TheAlexManVideos mr alex thanks for uploading such an informative video what is the name of the tool you used for the measurement of valves and what difference does different value of this tool make on the top speed of bike
Is there anything we can use as a gauge if we don’t have one of those gapping tools?? Anything close to the same thickness??
My dad is giving me his 1995 Honda Passport as a gift...however, he says that two of the power windows do not work...and the air conditioning doesn't work either. Can they be replaced or fixed without taking it to a shop? I really cant afford to have them fixed.
Did you replace the spark plug? Does it have points or CDI ignition?
Excellent how to video. Nice bike. I would not mind having one of those.
good instruction - but way better you can adjust the valves by using the special tool from daytona for valve adjusting. Costs just a few bucks but is much more comfortable.
Good tip. I agree it would be nice. A few different companies make that tool. I just never spent the money.

I would clean the carburetor. Make sure the valves are adjusted, and clean/adjust the points.
@TheAlexManVideos do u adjust the valves like this on any engine?

nice tutorial!
i have recently bought a fully working honda vision met-in (1992) i was wondering if you knew how i would be able to derestrict it and replace a wing mirror?
Thanks, Michael.

Nice video, where did you find that feeler gauge I have been looking every where for one like that I need a 0.05 mm (0.002 in) for my 65 ct200 trail 90
is this the same process for a tao tao 50 scooter?

Great vid, quite explanatory. Do i have to empty the oil to do this procedure?
thanks
great video, why do you have tape on the wrenches?
This particular bike is a 1984 roller with a 1979 motor.
If they were tight before you might notice a little bit of noise after correct adjustment. If it is obviously not right, chances are you didn't adjust them with the cam in the right position and now the clearance is way too high.
This is an excellent tutorial.
Alex! You are the Man!! Great informative video!!
That was very helpful and educational.. thanks for posting...
keep up the good work man!!
where canu get the measuring thin i have a 80 does it make a difference. by the way why dont u get a service shop or somithng u are well good in moterbikes mate
Yep it is pouring out that hole. As soon as I take the bolt out the oil comes pouring out, what do you think it could be?
Dude, I have no idea but I doubt it. If it's anything a CRF450R motor it uses shims and buckets. I would suggest you get the manual or take the bike to a shop.
Alex i have a 1979 honda c70 i changed the head and cylinder because it was siezed.it was running perfect with the other head but from i changed it its chokeing up and im not getting full power.i took it apart and resealed it incase it was getting air from some of the seals but its still the same and the timeing is fine.the carb was good so it couldnt be it.have you any ideas what mite be causing this?
Still solid info to this day thanks bro
1981 C70 Passport 2300 miles. Seems to have a flat spot from 25 mph on. I have not adjusted valves in 2 years. Would this be a place to start? Also, seems to RPM up with in neutral with the choke NOT on. When you put into first, it jumps. Starts easily and idles well, but has lost getup and go. Top speed is about 38mph. Suggestions?
Great video, i'm guessing this is the same for honda 90cc singles?
One, two, three and four. 125cc? Three and Four or three and three. Balanced intake and Exhaust. Thanks for the Help. Good Video.
how do you set the carb back to factory settings....not to sure how many turns out for the air screw, and the idle screw?
What type of head is on that bike? My engine looks EXACTLY the same and yesterday it seized up and ont turn over at all. Should I fix it or just buy a 150cc engine?
does this valve adjustment apply on a different camshaft?
my engine is fitted with camshaft ones with a higher lift and duration..
my engine sounds like a ticking clock..
ok so i have a Chinese replica z50 and i think the valves need an adjustment, everything is the same from the vid on the motor, but do you need to take out the oil to do this?
@TheAlexManVideos is it posible after many years of use that they can become too
tight and will cause the engine to have no compression ?
It adjusts the clearance between the rockers and the valves. Too loose and they rattle a lot, too tight and the valves hang open and you'll lose power.
It is an easy thing to check and might be the cause.
Do the intake and exhaust valve should be at different tensions like 10mm and 15 mm
hi i have a z50r and every couple of days i have to replace the spark plug because it gets oil fouled. also it blows a bit of smoke. wat should i do to fix it. will replacing the rings and gaskets do anything. also maybe the valve guides?

my dad has even seen this video but he lives by the saying"if it ain't broke don't fix it" and he won't let me adjust mine. he thinks if i try to adjust them everything will go wrong and there will be a lot of problems. it runs like it just pulled off the showroom floor but i have had mine 8 years riding it almost daily and never even thought twice about the valves. should i do it behind his back or just leave it?
0.002 - 0.006
i run mine at 0.004
hope this helps you
great info.. Helped my out alot.. Thanks

I do not have a video showing this process. It is fairly involved. You must split the cases to do so which means removing the entire top end, clutch and shifter parts, and then pulling the two case halves apart.
