Kate has an incredible 4 octave voice, and here she is singing in her upper register because she is playing a ghost (from the novel, Cathy dies and comes back to haunt her true love Heathcliff). Most of Kate's songs are character-driven and Kate becomes her character when she is performing. This is also from her first album and Kate said that on her first few records she wanted to explore the range of her voice, mostly in her upper register and therefore we get much more of her vocal gymnastics on the first two albums especially. By the time of Hounds of Love (her 5th) Kate sings in a much more mature, sensual style. Also, this is pre-MTV and Kate was one of the first artists to make musical performance videos
It's an absolute classic, one of the greatest pop records ever made and her performance was perfection, that's why when she did a concert a few years ago 75,000 tickets sold out within 15 minutes.
That song and Kate Bush are perfection!
She is possibly the UK's most influential and unique female artist She writes and produces all her work all under her own strict control. It is sometimes years before we hear a Kate Bush album. "Hounds Of Love" is the album I think will really blow you away. I saw her live in 2014 (her first concert in 35 years) and she was breathtaking. I urge you to take some time to check out her back catalogue. In 1991 she covered Elton John's "Rocket Man" and put her own stamp on it. A artist who is definitely a pioneer in her craft.
Spot on .
You don't need to tell me! I love her early work! I think it's way much better than the latest poop. She has lost her voice and songwriting skills. No longer can we hear something like the songs The Kick Inside or There goes a Tenner. A pity.
Please don't berate me for saying so 🤔
@@zaradragonia9863 what makes you think she's lost her voice as there is literally no proof? Her last appearances and concerts were spectacular and critically acclaimed. She just chooses to spend life at home. We can only hope she graces us with her brilliance one more time.
@@charliechaz1982 yeah you're right. It's more like her voice has changed and I am not into the new style. I don't mind artists changing but I was such a big fan of the early days that when I heard the new stuff it just didn't appeal to me 😉
She was way before her time she and David Bowie took dance movement classes from Lindsay Kemp. He died last year. Give Kate a chance she is wonderful. Cloud Busting is great too. Try Babouska too she is wild!
It doesn’t matter that I’ve heard this song thousands of times since 1979. I still gave goosebumps. She is a true, amazingly talented artist
This was from her debut album 'The Kick Inside', she wrote this when she was 16. She started writing songs from piano and voice at the age of 11. By the time she was signed in 1977, she had written over 200 songs!! I am also more of a fan of her later work, check out 'Night of the Swallow'
'Pull out the Pin"
and if you are ready for her epic ,'The Ninth Wave' is a seven part masterpiece that takes up the second half of Hounds of Love, and it is her crown jewel.
YES! The Ninth Wave is epic. One of the greatest concept suites ever recorded. If you ever react to this do them all in order. The songs tell the story of a woman who finds herself swept overboard from a ship, alone in the vast ocean, wearing a life vest and a little light. The songs reflect her battle to stay awake and alive, while her subconscious thoughts play out in her mind.
Delius was fantastic.
Kathy and Heathcliff are characters from the classic novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
I bet you'll go back years later and it will become your favorite Kare Bush song. Almost everyone who sees this song for the first time don't really like it. But then over time they're listening to it, again and again. And reading about it and then you'll realise omg I love this song lol. The track version on her whole story album is amazing. many people have reacted the same as you
I find that video of Johnny Rotten gushing over Kate Bush the funniest thing ever, he was totally ensorcelled.
I fell in love with the song and her. 1978 I first saw the film clip. In the red dress I was enchanted and smitten. I bought the first 4 albums before becoming disillusioned with the new style of singing and songwriting 😗
I loved that song right away
Saw it for the first time yesterday. I also saw it for the 40th time yesterday.
@@isaaccarter7786 haaaa 🤣 I can't imagine living life without Wuthering Heights as my special friend all of these years. Love the old Bush;)
I hated this song the first time I listened to it but then , don't know why, I just needed to listening it again and again, and now is one of my favorites.
Same here!
She briefly came back a few years ago for a few very small gigs and everybody went nuts. Shes amazing
@@MGrayl-ib5fo the ones im referring to were at Hammersmith Apollo. All 22 of them.
As far as im aware shes never played the O2 arena.
Theres a Kate Bush tribute act playing at the O2 Academy if thats what you mean?
Sge sold out in 37 seconds for 25 nights amazing i got the last ticket for the apolo Manchester city on her gig if life tor brilliant just classic
This Woman's Work is definitely worth a look. It is well known because of the cover by Maxwell. But there is only one Kate, albeit we know Annie Lennox occasionally channels her. I always find that with the whole package of Kate singing, dancing, and the visuals of her videos she casts a spell.
What is remarkable is that Kate Bush was still a teenager when this song was released in early 1978. Such talent at such an early age and it always makes me smile seeing the reaction of people when they first hear her voice.
If you’ve ever read Wuthering Heights, the lyrics/video mean more.
In fairness, Kate Bush hadn't read the novel either when she recorded this.
Heathcliff, heartbroken, because he couldn't marry the love of his life Katherine , lives in a ramshackle mansion with a bunch of feral dogs. Katherine ( who married the guy she was supposed to according to Victorian rules ) withered in her loveless marriage and died . So Now her ghost cries at Heathcliff's window .. "Heathcliff let me in its me Kathy it's so cold etc.. " This brilliant song occurred to Kate bush as a teenager after she saw the ending of a wuthering heights movie.
@@MartialLoreNZ no. She red it..
Even the Movie is great!
@@MartialLoreNZshe had read the book b4 recording
I appreciate that even if it wasn't really your thing you can still objectively see how great it is, but it might also be a grower so don't give up on it yet! It takes time to get used to her voice, it was very high in the beginning of her career but extra high in this song because it's based on the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and she's portraying a ghost! You might like it more if you know the story. This song is a masterpiece, my favorite song of all time. I love the video, she's so captivating. Maybe do Babooshka next!
I read the book for my university course and I swear I didn't fully appreciate the story until our professor showed us this video/song!
Nobody can love everything from her, because every single song from her is different.
She's not like common singer or band, when you love them because you love their style.
And that's why she is a genius and an enigma.
She was only 18 here. The older she got, the better she became. A true genius 👏
Thank you for being honest. Most reaction video hosts are "acting" and not at all being honest. They LOVE every single song, regardless of genre or period. They are terrified of offending any listeners and thereby losing views/cash.
an absolute genius , one of only a handful of artists ahead of their time...
I still remember hearing this on the radio one chilly foggy morning getting ready for work in 1978 when it was released ( I was 18). I thought what the hell is that? She cast a spell which like many people after a couple of listiens I went under. This song is written and sung by a genius. She sounds just as exciting today as she did then. She totally broke the mould with this song and the way she used her voice along with the dance/mime aspect. It’s almost a bit like punk in that that she shook things up in the main stream with this song in both it’s content and her voice. It totally resonates with me. Appreciate its not your thing but at least you realise how talented she is.
Spot on!
This song is based on a novel, there's a movie "Wuthering Heights" with Tom Hardy...It gives you a different perspective and you will see this song in a different light....
One of the best songs ever for me,what an amazing voice, and such an original masterpiece 👌
“Wuthering heights day”, videos are hilarious……..hundreds of people in the red dress doing the choreo! Men included lol! Kate bush uniting all!
I was 19 and in love with Kate ! and still am, she is like Toyah very talented singers/dancers i love them both, thank you.
Well, she is a lovely ghost who comes back to haunt Heatcliff. Hence the unnatural voice and creepy moves. ”It’s me, Kathy… I’ve come home. Let me in through your window, I’m so cold”. She came back because he did not want her to rest in peace. It was a love story that went terribly wrong. I think it’s a brilliant, lol.
This is my #1 favorite song from her--the one that got me hooked to Kate Bush! ❤My other two favorite songs from her are #2 *This Woman's Work* & #3 *The Sensual World* And of course, her collab w/Peter Gabriel in the song, *Don't Give Up* Hope you get a chance to get to them!
She was very very young here … I love it but yes her lower range is also amazing
Favourite songs
And dream of sheep

This woman’s work
The man with the child in his eyes
Lots more 😁
I was 11 years old when this came out in 1978, me and my dad cried laughing at the witchiepoo on Top of the pops.
One of the best songs of all time imo
Biggest compliment you could give her considering your taste in music.
This song quickly hit no 1 in a number of countries! When it was released in 1978, disco ruled! And this was so hauntingly different and beautiful!! It was slightly spooky! That of course, was intentional, given its context. And it got peoples attention!! You got the vibe hearing it on the radio. Before seeing the video or understanding the story behind the song!
This Woman's Work, Cloudbusting and Breathing are much more aurally palatable.
I tend to hate all this artys fartys interpretive dance shit...but if one person could make me like and even enjoy it, its Kate Bush. Pure talent.
agree! most artists let the dance and eccentric moves take away from the song - Kate Bush makes it all look like it's supposed to be there. effortless and weirdly powerful.
so would you call Kate Bush's style "artsy fartsy interpretive dance shit?" Cause that's basically what she does.
@@knucklehoagies her artsy fartsy dance shit obviously made an impression. we're talking about her and not joe blow.
@@knucklehoagies that’s what they said…? What a weird question when they already gave you the answer by calling it that to begin with lol
@@razrv3lc at least my mom is still alive.
When I saw this on the TV I was a little taken aback now I absolutely love it ❤️
Such a great video of one of the greatest recordings.
Let me grab your soul away....
This was one of my favourite vocal artists, you really need to listen to, This woman's work, army dreamers, Babushka the list is endless, don't give up on her she is amazing .
Hi from UK 🇬🇧 ☺️
It's touching when you understand the lyrical context. I honestly LOVE this song. It's weird and beautiful and heartfelt.
Agreed. People should read more books. If you read the book, you can understand how this song is pure ART.
She fought her label to make this be her very first single despite them urging her not to. Then it was Uber successful and broke the record for the youngest female songwriter to have a self-penned #1. She’s been in control of her career since the very beginning, even when it wasn’t common for female singers to be.
Masterpiece .... KB wrote this at 18 yrs old in a couple of hours on March 5th 1977 and recorded in 1 take (thx google). Video is cool too
After I few more times listening to this and you'll be thinking to yourself just how amazing a song this is.
The absolute genius that is Kate Bush, to think she was only 19 years old at this time is amazing.
Kate Bush is an artist that, I believe, almost puts a spell on her listeners. Either listeners are excited about her to the highest degree or they are lukewarm. A bit of trivia, one artist you wouldn't imagine liking her a lot is Tupac Shakur. When he heard this song he raided the record stores looking for this recording.
Pat Benatar covered Wuthering Heights in 1980 and she was a huge fan of the song.
A very good honest reaction! Not one of my favorites either but this lady was partly to blame for me liking woman at a young age! The song Babouska is what done it for me! That song is more your liking in more ways than one! I saw it first on a children's TV program here in the UK and after the video, the presenter was a bit shocked! His words I think were "That wasn't what I expected at this time in the morning!" Give it a go!
My favorite artist of all time. This was how I found her. Her voice quite literally haunted me until I found out who the hell Kate Bush was. This happened maybe 10 years ago or so, and I am so glad I found her. She truly changed my life with her music. I love her early albums most, but probably because I obsessed over them the longest. :)
I can't believe how these people are not taking to Kate Bush 's Wuthering Heights. Makes me think what would happen if it was released in 2022. Again it probably would be looked at as a anamoly 😊
My 3 favorites from her are Wuthering Heights, Suspended in Gaffa, Room For The Life.
Bravo Anton, you should listen to her album hounds of love.. You'll love the hits but I think you'd be able to love the deep adventures B side too.. Promise it'll stay for a lifetime
Music perfection
Top three favourite Kate Bush songs are ‘Moments of Pleasure’ ‘Wuthering
Heights’ and ‘Sat in Your Lap”….so many good ones though…so very hard to choose. Take a look at ‘Cloudbusting (The Organon Mix)’.
LOVE Moments of Pleasure!
I was about 13 but very interested in music, settling down for ‘Top of the Pops’ with my friends when Kate Bush made her first appearance singing this. All out mouths dropped open.
I love your honesty. Great that you can be objective in terms of your opinion of the song whilst being able to simultaneously appreciate the genius of Kate. Thank you!!
I have vibes from Freddy Mercury in some songs from Kate bush. So I love Queen songs and now I discover a female voice actor with the qualities I like
Kate Bush is quite rightly a British music legend in her own right.
Fair enough her style is not everyone's cup of tea but she has such an angelic, mesmerising voice and of course her hand movements.
She actually took lessons from a Movement coach and has obviously incorporated this into her music videos.
But the amazing thing about KB is that she had written her first album by age 14. One of her fans is Midge Ure who helped organise Live Aid with Sir Bob Geldof.
Ure has said that she almost doesn't believe that people rate her as highly as what they do and if you were to sit down and speak to her she's like this very sweet wee girl with an incredibly soft voice.
A MAJOR TEAR-JERKER NOT TO MENTION EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL ❤️!!!!
More Kate Bush ? ...

I first heard this song on top of the pops in 1978, i was 8 years old, the next day at school everyone was talking about it, she was like nothing before. In my opinion, the song is genius, as is she, but i have to say well done on having the guts to say its not for you, this makes me want to investigate more of your reactions, honesty is so important, we cant like everything
When I first heard this song when first released, I thought it was a bit weird, and I was only 5 years old at that time. I preferred her later stuff, but have come to appreciate this song.
I remember seeing this on early MTV and just being fascinated by her, they broke the mold after making Kate.
Hi!!
You should hear/watch the version of this Brazilian singer, Anna Maz. It's completely stunning! It's a mix of the original version by Kate Bush and an brazilian metal band, Angra. You won't regret!
La amo es divina 💕 love besos 💋 de Argentina te amo
My favorite Kate Bush song has always been Houdini. Then probably Babooshka, followed by Running Up That Hill.
She is channeling Cathie's ghost tapping on Heathjcliff's window..
She's playing a ghost. The Emily Bronte novel of the same name, concerns 2 doomed lovers... Cathy and Heathcliffe. The former dies and haunts a grieving Heathcliffe. All set in the desolation of the Yorkshire moors, which only adds to eerie vibe
Kate Bush was and is, in my opinion, an impressionist. She is arthouse. She is all that. I think she is one of the best musicians to influence my generation. I think the thing you like about Sting is the impressionism, which I think is actually more that he was influenced by Andy Summers.
Fun fact, Kate Bush and Emily Brontë, "Wuthering Heights" author share a birthday. July 30th.
I LOVE HER !!
Shes absolutely brilliant kate you keep it up girl i love it wild girl
Her vocalization on this one might be a strain for some people but I rushed out and bought the single the moment I heard it! I hear the keening of wind and spirit on the moors.
This song did take me a while to warm to. Mostly helped by my looking into what inspired the song. Kate had never read Wuthering Heights, but she did see a BBC special, tuning in right around the first time a ghost of a main character appears.
She DID read "Wuthering Heights". Listen to her saying it at 0'40":
ua-cam.com/video/MSCdqI-5Qh4/v-deo.html
So much bullshit circulating on youtube...
@@cuckoofan Minor correction, she was reading it as part of touching up the song. She still started writing it after the special.
Oh wow I was expecting you to be blown away by this. This hit No 1 in the UK at the height of the punk and disco era so there was nothing like it. I didn't like it initially but it totally grew on me. Great interpretation through words and mime of the Jane Austen classic about the ghost Cathy coming back from the moors for Heathcliff.
Beautiful song.
You'll come back to it later. Trust me. And you'll love it.
My favourite song and favourite book
There is another original video to this song. They made two at the time. This is version 1. The other one is Kate is in a field with a red dress on and doing her wonderful dance moves and singing. It's a bit more natural than this. This is still good though. My favourite three Kate Bush songs are Running up that Hill, Man with a child in his eyes and Wuthering Heights.
Cloudbusting is my favorite song of hers, i think you might enjoy it.
A trained dancer, Kate Bush turned each of her performances into an artistic event.
She’s a ghost
The end notes are sublime
Sensual World is an underrated masterpiece by Kate!
Wow, been a while since Ive been to this channel. Im all in on the BAND-MAID Tsunami about to hit North America, but seeing you take on the legendary Kate Bush... I grew up in the UK , so unlike most "Yanks" she's already been part of my core existence haha
This time, I remembered I was lying in the oak closet, and I heard distinctly the gusty wind, and the driving of the snow; I heard, also, the fir bough repeat its teasing sound, and ascribed it to the right cause: but it annoyed me so much, that I resolved to silence it, if possible; and, I thought, I rose and endeavoured to unhasp the casement. The hook was soldered into the staple: a circumstance observed by me when awake, but forgotten. “I must stop it, nevertheless!” I muttered, knocking my knuckles through the glass, and stretching an arm out to seize the importunate branch; instead of which, my fingers closed on the fingers of a little, ice-cold hand!
The intense horror of nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed,
“Let me in-let me in!”
“Who are you?” I asked, struggling, meanwhile, to disengage myself.
“Catherine Linton,” it replied, shiveringly (why did I think of Linton? I had read Earnshaw twenty times for Linton)-“I’m come home: I’d lost my way on the moor!”
As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. Terror made me cruel; and, finding it useless to attempt shaking the creature off, I pulled its wrist on to the broken pane, and rubbed it to and fro till the blood ran down and soaked the bedclothes: still it wailed, “Let me in!” and maintained its tenacious gripe, almost maddening me with fear.
“How can I!” I said at length. “Let me go, if you want me to let you in!”
The fingers relaxed, I snatched mine through the hole, hurriedly piled the books up in a pyramid against it, and stopped my ears to exclude the lamentable prayer.
I seemed to keep them closed above a quarter of an hour; yet, the instant I listened again, there was the doleful cry moaning on!
“Begone!” I shouted. “I’ll never let you in, not if you beg for twenty years.”
“It is twenty years,” mourned the voice: “twenty years. I’ve been a waif for twenty years!”
Thereat began a feeble scratching outside, and the pile of books moved as if thrust forward.
I tried to jump up; but could not stir a limb; and so yelled aloud, in a frenzy of fright.
INCREDIBLE SONG! In Grade 12, we had to read Wuthering Heights…Heathcliff and Cathy…you should read it to understand the song! Cathy (Kate Bush) is a GHOST which goes with the ethereal movements and lighting/background. INCREDIBLE talent!
I would have been 14 when this came out - old enough to have enough pocket money to go out and buy this and Blondie denis Denis - #1 and #2 in the UK charts at the time. What a strange mix of music I had!! lol
FIRST time I have EVER seen a reaction that said, "Yeah, not my thing." SO refreshing! That being said: R U nuts? :)
It took me a time probably to really love and get into this song. Rn is one of my fav of all time. Once you started diving and discovering all her career background I could understand all her masterpieces. Well that’s just me
Kate is a very interesting person, artist, and also an awesome singer. The way she dances, moves, and sings, represents this so well. Not much work to do, just one and only song, but it has to be an absolute masterpiece, and that's it. Have you ever heard this song? Very good reaction, so touching and true. No interruptions while the record was spinning, I'll watch it again and again.
I have loved her from first I heard her. Totally underappreciated. The man with a child in his eyes that made David Gilmour get her contract. The whole story cd was never far from my players and then her don't give up and work w peter Gabriel (games without frontiers) true visionary
Three songs: Babushka / With this kiss I pass the ring (Houdini) / Hounds of Love (and 'there goes a tenner' OK...4) I appreciate that you don't appreciate "Withering Heights" ... it's a lot ... but Kate is so... ' much of a muchness'
Fantastic song and a great book I recommend reading it. The story is represented in the song where Kate is Cathy's ghost
If you haven't got time to read the book, see the old black & white movie starring Lawrence olivier... A good way to spend a Sunday afternoon 👍
this womans work is pure class
Her first three albums had this very high, girlish voice (once described as a girl who crawled out of a toy box). And LOVE that early voice. Love ALL her albums and her later voice, but that impossibly high voice at the beginning was like landing on Mars.
this is a masterpiece
She was such an underrated artist back in the 70s/80s. Stranger Things basically skyrocketed her back to recognition. It seems to really be bridging two different generations together.
Pretty sure Kate Bush is sitting in her house like "jesus christ how did this happen? lmao"
Il y a les paroles, sa voix surtout et sa façon de danser qui sont bien particulières. Elle a ecrit cette chanson très jeune après avoir lu le livre. La danse est assez fascinante je trouve.
the descriptions are "Enchanting", "Heavenly"
I absolutely love this song I was 17 when this came out I met my future wife 12 months later in 78 she was the exact image of Kate and we are still together 45 years later with 2 beautiful grand daughters
Kate is playing Kathy's ghost in this video 🏴🏴🏴
This woman's work is a must of course :-) But Don't give up with Peter Gabriel will blow your mind! Please react to Jinjer Pisces when you have a chance! Thanks!
Pat Benatar did a killer cover of this song, but I don’t think there’s a video of it.
There is
This song has magicsl quality that is totaly unique based on the novel Wuthering Heights it is sung from the perspective of Kathy who is a ghost when it was released it was like no other song
Oh it will worm its way into your soul eventually. I didn't like it when I first heard it and now it's one of my favorites. The back story of Heathcliff and Catherine is played out well in this song and her voice is ment to be haunting as she is the ghost of Catherine.
