- This is a brief explanation of immunotherapy and my personal experience going through allergy shots!
Immunotherapy treatment (allergy shots) is based on a century-old concept that the immune system can be desensitized to specific allergens that trigger allergy symptoms. These symptoms may be caused by allergic respiratory conditions such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and asthma.

You may notice a decrease in symptoms during the build-up phase, but it may take as long as 12 months on the maintenance dose to notice an improvement. If allergy shots are successful, maintenance treatment is generally continued for three to five years.
Allergy shots are a form of treatment called immunotherapy. Each allergy shot contains a tiny amount of the specific substance or substances that trigger your allergic reactions. ... Your immune system builds up a tolerance to the allergens, causing your allergy symptoms to diminish over time.
A year's supply of allergy shots can run between $800-$1,000 for the first year and maybe even less if you have a solid medical insurance plan with a decent co-pay. Although you may need to take shots for between three and five years for optimal effect, this may still be cheaper than over the counter alternatives.
Sneezing and nasal congestion are common side effects of allergy shots. Normally, the only side effect that people experience after having an allergy shot is redness or swelling at the site of the injection.

I'm pretty much allergic to everything, both in the natural world and 24 out of the 80 chemicals they test for contact dermatitis. I love cats, still have them even though I'm allergic. I'm almost 63 and have been having allergy shots for 2 1/2 years--much improved. My allergist said that if I were younger I probably wouldn't have needed shots for so long, so get them when you're young!!
i will say i partly outgrew most of my allergies! had asthma as a kid and now dont have it in my late twenties

I did an allergy test a few years ago, in Florida so they did local allergies as well as common. They tested me for 58 different allergens and I had them all. My shots where done at home 🏡. My yearly cost was very very low due to great insurance. I’m doing my second round now and I have 1.5 vials left. I get sick of injections but it’s worth it for me.

I have always had to take medication daily and use inhalers frequently long after highschool. It's severe enough that being in close proximity to someone who has a dog will give me asthma. Thank you for sharing your experience, I learned a lot from it. I'm considering immunotherapy because it sucks not being able to visit or live with someone that has animals. It's the worst feeling telling family members you can't visit them for Christmas because you don't want to feel like you're dying for the next 2 weeks.
Definitely see an allergist and see if it’s an option! I recommend
Just got my blood test done today, I had one done 2 years ago and I was allergic to dust mites, the past 10 months I seriously sneeze 100-200 times every single day, so I finally decided to go back in to see. Doctor suggested allergy shots once my test comes backs.

I got a allergy test done as a child. Whole thing was bizarre.
I have anaphylaxis (peanuts). I have an epi pen on standby but, I’ve never used it to due to my fear of needles.
I now understand why my mom stopped my allergy shots.
Nut allergies are tough! They gave me an epi pen when I did the shots but thankfully I never had to use it!

I have seasonal allergies in fall and spring. It's not severe but it bothers me specially because it affects my lungs. I get very bad cough and shortness of breath. I don't have any food allergies and my main allergens are environmental for sure. I don't think i need immunotherapy but the fact that my allergies get worse every year concerns me
I definitely recommend seeing an allergist or even just your primary care doctor! I personally take BREO for my shortness of breath and then have my inhaler if I go running.
My allergies get worse or better depending on where I live - since moving to Richmond VA they’ve been at their worst, and that’s because there’s higher amounts of the trees and such that I’m allergic to.
Maybe get tested so you know what is triggering your reactions and observe your environment. Apartment living seems to be the worst for mine!

All of my shots have been covered entirely by insurance - and the allergy test isn’t that bad!!! Just pretend you are getting acupuncture and play a game on your phone/read to distract yourself, worked like a charm for me.

Agreed. I actually enjoyed the test, in a weird way haha. It was interesting. It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t an “injection” lol just a bunch of small scratches/pinpricks
Also the doctor scammed her when he made her start all the way over from scratch, LOL. I had one arm reaction like that, the doctor took me back a couple doses (1 week back), but didn’t start me all the way over. That’s crazy! Sounds like the doctor was either trying to make money off of you, or trying to reduce his own liability, but it wasn’t for your best interest
Anyway I’m one week away from getting to maintenance, and my allergy symptoms are almost completely gone. I am used to be very allergic to grass, pollen, and dogs… Now, I can play with my dog outside in a grassy field all day, and I barely get itchy at all. I used to be insanely bad and runny nose, itchy, sneezing after like 30 minutes, now I have none of those symptoms except a TINY bit of itchiness SOMETIMES. Allergy shots are flat out amazing, they work so much better than oral medication, anybody who has allergies is crazy not to get them (unless you Simply can’t afford them tbh). I used to be broke when I was like 18 and 19, and I couldn’t afford them… now I’m really successful making $200K a year and they’re the best thing ever.
My test was extremely painful because of the severity of my allergic reactions
@@charlesg7926 I was thinking the same thing - when I have a reaction to a shot, they don’t make me start from scratch, they just reduce the dose a bit

This is really helpful. Just finally got my RAST results backs. Found out that I had Seasonal and Annual allergies. Dust (4-5), Molds (3-4), Grass(2-3) and Trees(2) were the biggest for me, with some mild food allergies. The ENT doctor told me that I would benefit from the shots since House Dust was kind of hard to avoid and was my worse allergy. It's kind of relieving to know what has been causing my severe allergic reactions after dealing with them for nearly 12 years, but like you. I'm worried that during the shots I'll have a worse reaction eventually, though the doctor did plea for me to just be patient with them and not to stop taking them. Until the shot start I was given Xyzal and Singulair and the doctor is pushing for me to get checked for Asthma as I do have fits of weezing.

Any updates? I have chronic asthma from my allergies and tried every inhaler and asthma/copd and none have helped.
@@Alex-ml3zx Unfortunately it's a long process. Some weeks are better then others. Immunotherapy can take up to 3 to 5 years to effectively work. And in some case, longer. The one thing I have noticed, my allergic reactions have been more manageable, so less trips to the ER. I recently found out 2 or 4 months ago, that I had developed Mild Restrictive Lung Disease. So, I currently have been using Proair as needed, though prescribed 4 times a day. I agree the inhaler doesn't work like my primary care giver says will. I would honestly consider seeing a Pulmonogist for a different treatment plan especially with Asthma/COPD. Most cases of COPD I've known people needing oxygen and nebulizer to control. My dad himself has COPD and he uses and Nebulizer several times a week to help with his breathing.
As for Immunotherapy, my Allergist has me doing mine differently then what I see most people talk about. I've been on them for almost a year now and I still give myself injections once a week, so I'm not sure if my doctor is trying to fast track my treatment. I wouldn't doubt it since I'm highly allergic to House Dust.
I have a friend who highly recommends Xolair also, if you can find an Allergist giving it.
Does smoking has anything to do with allergy immunotherapy ?
@@saumyojitdas4212 I've not really heard of smoking having anything to do with immunotherapy. But I know smoke of cigars/cigarettes can help with triggers for some.

Ahh i was getting severe bronchitis back to back. Thought I had developed chronic bronchitis, doctor told me something that was impossible be ause I don’t smoke. He said I had constant irritation in my bronchials because of allergies. He put me on an asthma medication that does a great job but I insisted he refer me to an allergist. Well thank God because when they did the tests, turns out I was allergic to EVERYTHING in the atmosphere. Been getting my shots for about a month and I’m so glad I am finally taking care of the root of the problem and not the effects. Don’t hesistate to see an allergist. Whatever the cost it’s worth it.

It's finally here after a year-long wait 😂This is super informative! I definitely have some seasonal allergies especially in the late summer - early fall period. Pretty sure I'm allergic to ragweed pollen. The symptoms are horrible! Still can't figure out what's been giving me hives though!
Yes!! Ragweed was one of my worst - along with trees like oak, birch, and cedar!

I do have asthma and im allergic to cats, dogs, timothy grass and hay, trees, bugs, molds, more grass, and wheat. along with many other things bc i also have SeNsItIVe sKiN. :(

Get allergy shots bruh. They fking WORK! Like 100x more than pills. And to the asker- they’re only like $20 a shot haha… if they’re too expensive you need to date a successful guy instead of a bum lmao. I get my wife the shots too 😂
It's insane that they asked you to restart the shots. I'd switch practices and redo the program. Maybe ask for rapid shots. I got whole vials in a single day in the beginning and had copious reactions. No one suggested I start over. I got to full shot strength now and can start feeling a difference in my symptoms. yeah I think that is nuts too! A dime is NOT a major reaction. I did 4 months straight until I had an actual reaction (hives all over), it was a bit delayed (like 60 minutes later). They told me I had reached my maintenance dose, so they stepped it back two notches. Now I'm supposed to go monthly, and as a precaution they gave me an epipen if things get too crazy while on maintenance but they shouldn't. I have a mold and dust allergy. Now I can dust and I dont have sneezing fits anymore, and I can go outside when its really windy and I'm usually fine. Before it was awful.
I had the allergy test done. It felt itchy where you had an allergic reaction. It didn’t last too long. Afterwards, they cleaned the area and sprayed it with Benadryl.

I just had my 2nd allergy test done this week! It was done on my arm, my first test was done on my back. Gotta wait a couple months to see if I'm approved for allergy shots.
I suffer from allergic rhinitis for the last 15 years. Over the time it developed into asthma. I kept taking cetrizine and other medicines for controlling it. I also noticed my allergy get worse in rainy season. I would get sneezes in the morning and my nose would run continuously. Some people advised me immunotherapy as well but my close friends advised my against it as immunotherapy desensitize you to some allergens only to sensitize you to other things. I finally went to a homeopathic doctor as i was desperate. Best decision i ever made

I have really bad allergies and asthma. Everything they tested me for was positive or had a welt. I will definitely try this out and see how it goes! And how does it feel and how bad usually are the side effects?
It varies so much per person
Asthma, Eczema, and food allergies on top of being allergies to several types of trees, grass, animals, fragrances, dust, mold, cockroaches, mildew, changes from hot and cold, and physical activity.

A big thanks for the info. First I have to lose weight and only then my doctor will give the shots but I'm still in doubt about it. Fall and spring are my sick days as well. I only now since a year that I have severe allergies and allergic asthma. Before they told me I had "panic attacks" and "burn-out" symptoms.

Losing weight is something you should be doing anyway. I recommend doing a mix of swimming, running or cycling, and HIIT weight training (the weight training is 100% necessary, to retain muscle, *SINCE MUSCLE BURNS FAT 24-7*… otherwise you’ll lose muscle by doing cardio, and then get fatter over time). Weight train about 6 or 8x a month, I recommend. It’s not too hard on your body that way, but you will still get the benefits and you’ll lose a lot of fat
And remember, you don’t want to lose weight, you want to improve your BMI. You could lose 2lbs of fat and gain 2lbs of muscle and you’d be slimmer, sexier and healthier. But if you obsess about the number on the scale, then you won’t improve! Or you’ll be analyzing the wrong metric!
A better way of measuring it, is checking your waist line, your arm and thigh line, and also using a BMI pincher clip (forget what they’re called) to check how much fat you have on your arms, thighs, belly, back, etc. you will notice after doing 2 to 3 weeks of swimming, running and weightlifting, that you will be SLIMMER and TIGHTER. Which is good.
I got huge hives and redness to 54/57 things tested, he said I’m a prime candidate for immunotherapy seeing as that they’ll only get worse as i get older and i could develop worse asthma! He said I’ll need 3 shots at a time because I’m “so damn allergic” lol! This is a great video thanks!

@@MsCalifun Same here! Mine are getting so much worse also. I can barely go a week without sneezing and having a horrible runny nose, trouble breathing due to congestion, lack of smell, and slight asthma symptoms. I never knew that allergies could get worse when you get older 😩😭😭

Thanks for sharing this! Great info. I have allergic asthma, and it often triggers colds, bronchial infections, and sinus infections. I am especially allergic to cats. I always did ok just minimising or avoiding exposure to them, but now, many of my friends own cats, and so many people are now bringing support animals onto planes, public spaces, etc. which makes me nervous. Also I am 49, and my asthma and allergies seem to be getting worse. Do you think immunotherapy would be helpful? I like the idea of lessened symptoms, but I do not like the idea of being at all ill from the treatment.
I think it's worth a try - I also think plain exposure to what you're allergic to in small doses helps. I used to be severely allergic to cats, but the house I'm in now has a cat (she only stays in one area of the house and never goes upstairs) so it's actually helped me build up a pretty decent tolerance to cats in general as I've been living with her for most of this year!
Of course they’re helpful. They’re the most amazing thing ever and they solve allergies super well. Stop being a p*ussy and just get them already!

I'm currently going through my own health journey right now. Last year summer time 2022 I had an allergy asthma attack while doing yard work. The attack that I was diagnosed with is called bronchospasm. I was placed on an inhaler. I just did my 2nd skin test. First one was on my back and the 2nd was on my forearm. I'm allergic to mixed grass, various tree species, different weed species, dust mites and I'm allergic to dogs. (Last one makes me sad)
No food allergies and no mold allergies.
RN told me that it's a process so I go back in 3 months to see if I get approved or not. Hopefully I do, it sucks being on an inhaler. I cut out smoking and I'm dieting so both have definitely helped me breath alot better .
Smoking is the worst thing you can do to your body! I'm glad you quit! Hopefully allergy shots help too

I was quoted $585 for the program. Problem is it cost me way more in gas and dont have time to go there weekly.
They offer rush immunotherapy which is a 5 hour session that replaces the 1st 6 months of visits.
Do you have insurance? It is covered with most insurance. I wouldn’t do it without coverage.

Yeah I stopped because I kept having bad reactions and would have to start from zero again! But I did notice it helped my asthma long-term.
@@Margaret_Hemenway oh wow I can imagine the frustration with having to start over repeatedly. So you are a trooper for trying it out definitely. I wonder how often that occurs with people. 🤔 maybe the few shots you were able to get helped a little with becoming more desensitized to those types of allergens.

@@andreas956 I improved from what my baseline was - but the way my shots worked was i would get one done once a week and then they'd check for a severe reaction - if it was larger than a quarter that was considered severe and they'd start at the lowest dose again (even if I had progressed for a few months)

I have allergies - started after I had my son last year. Allergic to cats, dog, tree pollen, dust. Allergies get so bad that cause asthma flares, or that’s what they say. Start immunotherapy tomorrow. Covered by insurance, so I’m happy for that. Nervous about the side effects and that’ll send me into a flare. Did you just have skin reactions or actual asthma flares?
It was mainly skin reactions and you can often feel tired because your body is producing an allergic reaction response to the treatment.
Gina how did it go for you? I also developed allergies after having my baby, to my cat and dust mites. Doing my research on the shots now.
My ENT has recommended me SLIT ( Sublingual Immunotherapy) . should I go ahead with it? Please let me know!

I have lots of allergies, dust mites, dogs, cats, horses, then food allergies too. I know these injections don’t help with food allergies but I so desperately want a dog when I get my own house. I can’t even sit in my friends house even if the dog is not around me. I get almost like a really heavy cold a few days after being exposed to dogs and cats. Horses is even worse but luckily I don’t encounter them as often. If this really works it will make me so happy I am going to ask my doctor if I can get them done. I have had skin prick tests lots of times so that’s not so scary to me. But mine wasn’t on my back mine was on my forearms 😊

Thanks for your vid. I have a similar allergy profile to you and live in VA too, bad area for allergies. Biggest problem is allergy induced asthma when exercising. Albuterol doesnt quite cut it so My primary suggested Singulair pills, have u tried it?
Yes I have! They helped me but I ended up getting more relief from Flonase and drugs like that.

@@umairbutt4414 yes, in my case absolutely. My proof is that I can breathe through both nostrils all the time and most importantly I no longer get asthma-ish chest tightness (Dr said that I don't clinically have asthma, but all I know is that I had trouble breathing.) Good luck!

Randomly started having severe allergies, doing the immunization therapy right now, gonna continue doing it after watching this video, wondering if you had worse symptoms at 7pm to night time cause unfortunately been having tight chest bad breathing only evening to night. Hopefully immunization 💉 works.
I'm not sure if mine were worse at night - I just had the constant chest tightness as a result from the allergy shots.

@@BrosephMansby did you keep doing them? It could be just cumulative. If you are exposed during the day its like a double-exposure to the allergen with the shot too.
@@rachelm9350 I did them for 3 years and then decided to take a break. And I'm a woodworker during the day so that made it worse.
The test now isn’t as bad as all that. It’s just a light prick on your arms or back depending on how many you want to test for. Usually only one or two reactions are even seen after testing so you might see only a mild small bump similar to poison ivy or a mosquito bite.
I think it varies per person... I have severe allergies so I had severe reactions to the test.

I have chronic rhynitis and prone to asthma. Recently i has several asthma attacks and had allergy test done. My doctor also did recommend i do the immunotherapy for 3 yrs and i can spray under my tongue everyday. It was found allergic to 2 kind of mites n molds. But seeing your test result, yours really bad. Mine was just smaller than mosquito bites and just only 3 of them. My test didnt cover that many items and just done on the arm. Im kinda in between fence if i will do it or not since i do get attacks from strong fragrances and vehicle fumes which cant be immunized. So im really wondering if its worth it at all. I was looking in the web of people have undergone it and if theres really total recovery from rhynitis and asthma. Only found your video. I didnt know that you need to start over again if you have allergic reaction to it. It also makes me wonder since im already expose to those allergens daily why i still havnt develop an immunity for it so whats the difference for the immunotgerapy which also expose me to the allergens daily.
I think allergies are just really complex and I would do what your doctor suggests!
Awesome video. It's nice to hear a personal story rather than just doctors telling you generic stuff like "helps reduce allergies, may cause (every symptom ever)". I just started allergy shots 2 months ago after dealing with terrible allergies my whole life (I'm 23 living in Texas). Finally decided to get tested, found out I'm super allergic to like every type of grass, most trees, and a few other things. And yeah the test was pretty rough to have to sit through and not itch. Anyway, after starting the shots my allergies have never been worse, especially after they just upped the concentration, and I was just looking to see if anyone else had a similar experience. I guess it's one of those things where it gets worse before it gets better. I'm gonna try to stick with it for the full 3-5 years and see how it goes :)

Connor Byron - not sure if you’ll see this, but if you do - how are you doing now? I started immunotherapy drops (similar to shots) 4 months ago and my sinus issues have been awful since then. I’m debating whether or not to stop but want to stick it out. Having trouble finding reviews or resources :/
@@joanelised Hey there! I'm doing well. I'm about 5 or 6 months in (still part of the "build up" phase). It's probably still too soon for me to say, but I think I'm making good progress. I only take a Claritin on the day that I get the shots now. I still have my usual allergy symptoms but slightly less bad. My arms used to get insanely itchy and puffy at first... like wake-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night itchy. Now they don't really. I can't really comment much on the drops, but I hear they are basically just as effective. For me it's easier to do shots once a week than drops twice a day. Overall though, I'd say it's worth it to push through and just keep up the routine :) Hopefully we will feel the difference when spring rolls around again.
P.S. Flonase is really helpful to add to your daily routine if you can't breathe through your nose.
P.S.S. I ate a banana the other day and had a bad itch reaction. I've had it happen in the past since I was little (also with things like cantaloupe and jackfruit). It's called "Oral Allergy Syndrome". Certain fruits, like bananas, can cause a reaction if you are allergic to certain things, like Ragweed, at certain times of the year, like fall. The more you know. I still love eating bananas regularly.

@@rafaeltirona7056 I think my allergies are better overall. I had to stop the shots after 6 months since I was traveling for work :/ I would like to give them a try again at some point! It's still hard for me to breathe thru my nose bc I think it's always kind of inflammed/scarred. Nose unblocking exercises provide temporary relief. But again, overall I feel better :) and I don't sneeze as much

I am extremely allergic to cats (pet dander) to the point that it gives me asthma and severe cough. I wasn’t sure if immunotherapy would work on it since its so severe, I don’t even have to touch them just being around them for a few minutes will trigger it and soon I can’t breathe, I would really love it if I didn’t potentially die every time I’m around a cat. But since you say you had asthma and my symptoms are similar to that then this gives me hope 🙏 Hope I can find a good clinic to do this effectively. Would be a dream come true and lifesaver literally.
Yes, I would try to find an allergist that's covered by your insurance! It really did help my allergies - they are definitely not as severe as they used to be!
Do you still recommend people getting allergy shots with food allergies. I am like anaphalaxis to all nuts, all fish and seafood, kiwis and other foods. Whats your opinion?

I just started receiving allergy injections 4 weeks ago and every time I get my weekly injections, my entire arm is swollen with a giant painful hive for days after the initial shot. My arm aches so badly for days afterwards. Did you experience this? Thank you for the helpful video! I'm really hoping these shots help overtime because I am severely allergic to life lol. Yes I experienced that. It's normal. Just watch out because when I got a severe reaction they had me start back to 0.
Same thing happens to me and it gets red and hot and stays that way for about 2-3 days. Allergist says it's normal, so long as it doesn't spread to the rest of the body and ao long as there is no systemic reaction or anaphylaxis.
Use icepacks or cold compress to help.

I did about 4 months of shots in the build-up phase (like 1-2 per week). When they got to the "red" vials the nurse was like "we'll see how far you get on this one." I was like uhh..ok..err. Because pretty much I didn't have really much of a reaction past an itchy arm and mild swelling to the shots. Then these red ones...yikes. I had two they were okay, though the second one my arm had more of a lump in the injection site.. then the third one I had hives all over and my head felt like it was on fire. They said "congrats you made it to maintenance! " So they are reducing it down by two steps and that is the maintenance dose. :0. So the high level one was "too high" for me. (like ya think?). A dime is not a severe reaction... Very weird. Severe is like your arm is a softball or you get bodily hives. Zyrtec will (over time) make you like a zombie.

I’ve just been confirmed today of allergies for pollen and dust mites and I will have to go get allergy shots apparently for the rest of my life, I don’t believe it will be for that long but I’m still unsure of what happens. And do the allergy shots hurt??

Super awesome. I’m SUPER allergic to dogs, cats, dust, and it feels like everything. I have a dog and a cat. Does it make swelling inside the nose go away? Either one or the other side of my nose is and always have been swollen inside all my life due to allergies. Will this reduce the swelling in my nose?… I start immunotherapy in a week. Thanks
I think it helped reduce my inflammation, but I definitely still have allergies, just not as severe!

I just started my immunotherapy treatment today. I'm not going to lie, I'm still scared because I'm allergic to damned near everything. And I'm paranoid about the side effects. I just don't want to go in and get the next series of shots and I i start breaking out in hives or something...The first three shots were ok. Not great though. But thank you for those helpful tips.
If you’re allergic to everything I feel like the shots can only make it better! Just be sure to wait fifteen minutes after your shot to make sure you don’t have a severe reaction, but good luck!

Just start the therapy and talk to patients who are in the waiting room with you. They're all there for the same thing. I met many who got the shots for decades and it's helped them keep up with their hobbies. Few say it cured them completely but it made exposure bearable in many instances.
I am getting to full dose shots now and can feel a difference when exposed. I used to start coughing when sitting on an old couch we have in the apartment from dust mites. It takes longer for me to feel anything now. Ask your doctor for rapid shots. Sometimes your insurance will cover it.
My doctor used to be in the army and told me they used to do the whole shot program in three days so they could ship out the soldiers. The whole thing about restarting the shots and the slow injections over months is mostly to cover their ass, eliminate reactions and charge your insurance for each visit. Civilian life is different. :D Good luck.
I would say it didn't cure my allergies but it did greatly improve them. I think it is something always worth trying out.

@@jonathanbrown6751 Yeah sneezing is pretty bad if I’m driving I’ll have to pull over as I can’t see. The itchiness really gets me, my eye kids will end up with sores on them because I’m rubbing them too much and my throat always itches. So I have to do the nasal spray and eye drops. I usually do saline first thing in the morning before I step outside then load up. I use a prescription nasal spray which seems to work every second year. Every year I hope it won’t come and chance it then regret not starting it earlier. I could handle sneezing a lot, it’s more so the itchiness, eyes, throat, feeling drained from it, it’s like having a cold for 3 or 4 months straight.

Another Doctor said, "Your nasal septum slightly deviated to the left, sinus unable to clear mucus, that's called postnasal drip, your tonsil is OK, She recommended CT scan then if med can't solve it, I have to do septoplasty ". I'm worried because of the different answers from doctors, wasted lots of money. Now I'm kind of depressed and Anxious.

It is so interesting to see another perspective. I got tested for like 60 things in the prick test and had severe reaction to at least 40 of them. I just started immunotherapy today and I am on a cluster schedule. I have to get my shots in sets of 4 because they said they cannot combine certain allergens together so I got 16 shots today. I had a quarter size reaction to the last one. My doctor does not make you start over with a severe reaction, you just go back 1 or 2 doses and redo those. I am going once a week but ill be getting 3-4 sets each time so I can reach maintenance dose of once a month in about 8-10 weeks instead of a year. It does make for a long appointment tho because you have to wait 30 min between sets. I go through so many inhalers and tissues boxes. I am 27 and its only getting worse as years go on. Hoping for relief. My insurance is not helping at all :/
What is cool is that I have seen a reduction in my sinus issues since wearing a mask outdoors so that was nice :')
Same age as me!! Yeah it was so expensive so that’s honestly why I stopped. I wish it was fully covered by more insurance policies.

@@Margaret_Hemenway oh, then you must give it a shot. The possibility of side effects is lesser and even so, the intensity is definitely much lower than the injection shots. Watch a video by Johns Hopkins on UA-cam and you'll get a fair idea. Do check with your doctor on it once.

What happens if you are doing allergy shots but then you need to travel abroad for awhile?
I'm concerned that I would be wasting money if I start it and then have to pause when I travel abroad?
I think it would be wasting money to start and then stop. You have to do it weekly for months to see an effect and reach a maintenance level, so they recommend doing it when you’re going to be in the area for years and not away for more than two to four weeks at a time.

I'm a year into immunotherapy and have good results. But they just tested with drops on the forearm and then a sublingual spray (SLIT) for the treatment every other day. So there are never injections and it's very convenient. Maybe there's a reason for subcutaneous injections, but I don't know what it would be.
I’ve never heard of the spray before. How does it work?
@@matthewhennighan1112 After you get tested, they formulate a spray with the allergens that you react to. You just take a spray under the tongue every other day. Every three months for the first year, they increase the concentration, so at the beginning of the three month period, you might have a mild allergic reaction but by the end it's minimal. The only needles involved are at the three month visits they give you an in-office injection to make sure you don't have a severe reaction.
After a year, you go on a maintenance dosage. I got re-tested last week for my one year follow-up and there is noticeable improvement, though some mild reactions. They'll reformulate the allergen mix. My insurance covered the cost. Look up Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT).

@@user-go5mv9uw8v I've just finished the fourth year, which is the final round unless I can get insurance to pay for a fifth.When they first tested for allergies, almost all of the skin sites were bright red. By the fourth year, there was almost no reaction. I don't have significant problems with allergies now, other than a sniffle when my cat curls up next to my head at night.

My boyfriend’s roommate has a cat. It’s hypoallergenic (half bengal) but I am still slightly allergic to it. My jawline gets itchy and sometimes I scratch it accidentally and create hives. My bf is allergic to cats way worse yet isn’t allergic to the cat at all. He has a golden retriever puppy he wants to start bringing over once the cat and roommate move out and I’m freaking out. I’m severely allergic to dogs. His dog jumped on me, licked me all over my face, and I broke out in hives all over my face. I had to take Benadryl. The dog lives with his parents and, he lived there when we were first dating. I had hives often and tried to avoid the dog, but it was hard. It sucks :( he wants the dog to stay the night at his place. I will absolutely break out severely and be uncomfortable if that’s the case. I take allergy meds but it’s not enough. I can’t afford allergy shots and I know they’re a time commitment as well. Any suggestions? Nice job being detailed on your vid!
I can only recommend trying to reduce your exposure so you don’t have crazy reactions like that, and try to take allergy medications that are over the counter. I take Flonase and Zyrtec on a regular basis!
Margaret Hemenway I take Flonase and equate (generic Allegra) regularly and it’s still pretty bad, but that day I got hives all over my face I did forget to take them. I think those meds help w my cat allergy although I still get itchy in my tear ducts and along my jaw line. Sometimes I don’t though but I’m around the cat more and am less allergic to cats than dogs. Thanks for your help!

That’s probably not the only thing you’re allergic to. I recommend getting a second opinion. But aside from that, you should clean your house but you should also get the allergy shots. Do both!

All my allergies cause respiratory problems like seasonal asthma. It really sucks I’m allergic to molds and grass. The older I get the more I get freaked out by reactions. Hoping when I start the shots it will greatly decrease my throat and lungs swelling.

Ask the allergist to check your eosinophil white blood cell count. I have had very bad asthma for years and finally got help from an allergist. My einsophil count was very high thus causing the frequent attacks. He prescribed me a specialty medication called Fasenra. It lowers the einosphils in your blood which is the catalyst for asthma exaserbations. It has totally changed my life.

I have it but I don’t use it often! Only if I run outside during the spring or fall
I became 80% free from the allergies by discontinuing the use of the corticosteroid cream and other medications, also by eliminating certain foods from my diet like dairy, coffee, sugar, and sweets and introducing foods rich in proteins like eggs, oatmeal, quinoa..., what I haven't tried is the elimination diet, a couple of doctors recommended this, maybe getting an allergy test like you did together with the elimination diet can help
Yeah that’s smart. Eliminations are key! I also recommend an air purifier.
@@Margaret_Hemenway I got a RAST test for only rice, dairy, and dust mites. I came out 100% allergic to dust mites so an air purifier will help, thanks. The big one though that had me suffering for years was my body's dependence on the corticosteroid cream. After discontinuing the use of it, I spent four months homebound and at times bedridden with four hours of sleep a day because of the withdrawal symptoms and the high levels of inflammation in my legs and hands. After the four months, what the cream was doing to decrease the inflammation, my body began to do on its own. Before that, I was trying all sorts of diets like no sugar for two months, with temporal relief. It wasn't until I met someone online from the UK who had tried everything and freed himself from this ailment who taught me about discontinuing the use of these medications. After that, I learned that the best doctors are those who suffered the illness and overcame it.

I have been having asthma since when I was kids,but didn’t need to use inhaler for almost 10 years when I grow up. Recent 3 years I moved in with my boyfriend, he has a dog, but the first year the allergy reaction didn’t appear, however... it’s been really bad for 2 years, I have to use inhaler everyday and sometimes when I stay at home for holidays the asthma is just so bad felt like the inhaler doesn’t even work anymore... I am thinking to try the allergy shot no matter how much it will cost... hopefully it will work...

I’m not sure how well your allergen medication works for you but if you have Allegra in your area you should try it out. It’s what I use and it really helps. I have also recently started allergy shots and I feel that when I take Allegra the reaction isn’t as bad.
