The Moog Prodigy Synthesizer from the year 1979 is my favorite Moog synth. Here can you find the full Prodigy playlist with a lot single sound demos, synth comparisions and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy. The Prodigy playlist ----> ua-cam.com/play/PLe08Lbpy8pPY8Dp11BlBJ86vT93N-gh4T.html
To my humble ears the Source has the 80's new wave vibe to it and the Prodigy has the classic rock sound to it. Both are the pinnacles of synthesizers. Great vid. Thanks.
I have played both and own a Source. They are both great synths and every view is subjective. Most people listen to this demo on their phones or pc speakers and this is no test. You have to play them to form an accurate opinion. No one is right or wrong but here is my opinion as to why the Source is in my mind the far superior synth. Firstly, it was the intended replacement for the Minimoog and was a far pricier synth, whilst the Prodigy was a more affordable Moog. The envelopes are much snappier and are a full ADSR. The filter has the Minimoog distortion factor. You can save sounds. It has an arpegiator. The LFO goes so fast, you are getting into the audio range. Of all the Moogs I have ever played, it was the most similar to the Minimoog. The bass is off the scale whilst I found the prodigy a bit thin in comparison. Whilst the parameters are digitally accessible, the audio path is entirely analogue on the Source. It is not a digital synth. For those reasons, it wins hands down for me. Both are great though!
To paraphrase, “I never met a Moog that I didn’t like!” And, while I wasn’t exactly crazy about the alpha wheel & membrane switches (well, the switches weren’t too bad…), I absolutely appreciated the patch memory on the Source! I think today’s retro-clones should all feature patch memory; it’s really an easy addition in this age! ✌🏻😎🎹🌴🌞
I bought a Source and a Prodigy a few days ago. So far I love both equally and for slightly subtle reasons. The Prodigy allows me instant inspiration the second I touch it. The Source doesn't have that instance about it and makes you dig in a little deeper and explore, which is just as inspiring. When you do hit "That" sound with the source everyone I the room smiles and looks at each other like a hit album is about to be made... It seems I will be mostly using one for jamming out ideas and the other for more polished studio takes, so far as my limited experience with both has presented me.
Moog Source, the bass is so FAT and punchy, and it holds a mysteriousness. The Prodigy seems much easier to program, though the sound is thinner. I would pick the Source just out of curiosity alone.
the source sounds great (better resonance) but the membrane buttons and one endless knob is the deal breaker for me i would pick the prodigy in my opinion
the membrane/wheel is a lot less restrictive than people think it is. you can even do things with it you can't do with other controls, like "whip-spinning" the wheel to smoothly cycle through parameter values. try playing one!
Definitely The Moog "Signature"... For Both, Obviously ! Really Tremendous Analog Sounding For These 2 "Little... Big Beasts" ... Powerful, Wild Sounds You Have To Fall In Love With ;- ) ) Thumbs Up & Thanks For This Highly Delighting Demo !
Both sound very, very good. I tend to listen to these without watching the video, and all throughout I kept hearing really amazing sounds and then I'd look and be surprised at which one it was. Is it wrong that I want both now?
Nice video! My first synth ever was the Moog Prodigy. Two things I couldn't help but notice in this comparison. Although both mono outputs, the Source seems to have a wider image. But engaging the filter resonance appears to cut the signal amplitude more on the Source? While being able to save patches would have been super nice back in the day, I would say I probably learned more about subtractive synthesis faster having to switch sounds by hand with immediate access to all controls.
Schöner Vergleichstest! Für mich ist der Prodigy der Winner. Fett klingen sie beide - jeder auf seine Weise. Aber der Prodigy hat den direkteren Zugriff und liegt damit klar vorne!
The Source sounds just a bit richer but I guess the Prodigy is more intuitive to controle since it has the classic knobs and switches. If I would be a band leader with enough money I would propably choose the Prodigy for the stage and the Source for the studio.
+derLPMaxe Funny I went the Opposite way, Cause of the Source's Ease of use and Memory presets and touch pad control for stage use. I thought the Prodigy had a richer sound and Longer to "Dial-in" for studio work.
well now that I hear the theremin sound of the prodigy, it's range may be more than I put it before with your versus pro one video. The sound is still more clear in the source to me.
I would say Prodigy for the Studio and Source for the stage, The Source's Presets/Memory and touch pads work better for the stage and for quick sound changes at the sacrifice of some sound. DID you already do or will do A Moog Source comparison to the Minimoog? The Source was supposed to be a digitally-Assisted version of the Minimoog Or "Minimoog Version 2.0" (Memory/Presets/tape-storage, touch pad, etc.) I bet I will Make the same proclamation, Minimoog for the Studio, and Source for the Stage. Right around 1980-81 the Moog's Filter circuit started to change (If I remember correctly)
There's a big difference for my hear but i don't understand why, both are Moog with 2 vco, 3 wavforms and same filter, the only difference is that the source is Adsr and prodigy Adr (and Ads for minimoog) so i don't see why the sound is so different between them ?
My Prodigy was ok in the upper ranges. But since only one Osc went down to 32' it didn't quite have the low end guts that is demonstrated well here. I always liked the look of the Source - it looked like the future in the same way that the PPG Wave did. Screw the idea of a one knob Moog though.
I had a Source but let it go (picked it up for £100 in the 80s and sold it for £1100 a few years ago). Didn't like the membrane buttons. Used a mate's Prodigy a lot in the studio in the early 80s and loved it - for me, it has a much more characterful sound. Could just be nostalgia, of course :-)
I had a moog source and the prodigy goes lower, more raw and organic in it's sound. As soon as there's anything digital in any synth you lose some of what makes analogue sound special.
I'm not sure what makes the Source sound so much nicer to my ears. I haven't researched this, but I assume both use the same ladder filter, so maybe the filter is driven harder in the Source? VCO sync sounded very different between the two synths as well - I'm not sure which one I prefer.
Mr. Retrosound, It may be my ears or it may be the video, but imo, the Source sounds more like a Minimoog Voyager while the Prodigy sounds more like a Minimoog Model D. What do you think? Please give me your honest opinion because synths don't always sound the same when you hear them in person on a nice amp and then hear them over UA-cam on mini PC speakers
yes the Prodigy sounds a bit like the Model D without the deep sound. in bass has the Minimoog a lot more power. The Source sounds very deep but with metallic sound character.
Der prodigy hat einfach etwas mehr druck unter dem hintern ^^ aber der source schmiegt sich irgendwie schön an ^^ jetzt ist die frage welcher sich wohl einfacher in einen mix integrieren lässt hihi

This hurts my ears
For me better Source than Prodigy: Source have arpeggiator, sequencer,S&H processer and more "meaty"and mild sound, and with help of Source can be prepared saw detuned bass, widely usable in modern genres, for example in Trap,Chillout etc.In its turn,Prodigy have raw and powerful sound, great for modern music styles too,but (yet again IMHO) have few possibilites than Source and he worth groundlessly expensive (as Rouge too),even as vintage.

+RetroSound Your Prodigy has CV gate? Did you buy it already installed or did you get CV installed later? Is it expensive to install CV in the old model of Prodigy?
The fact is that both of these synthesizers use almost identical oscillator circuits and ladder filter. Hence they're very similar. The Prodigy wins for the immediate hands-on tweaking, whereas the Source can only access one parameter at a time with the single encoder. However, the Source can save patches, the Prodigy can't. The Source has an onboard sequencer, the Prodigy doesn't. The Source has full ADSR envelopes, the Prodigy only has ADS (Release time is the same as Decay time). The Source offers pulse width modulation on both VCOs, the Prodigy doesn't have PWM. The Source has a white noise sound source, the Prodigy doesn't.
You messed up with names and titles. ProdiGy, not ProdiDy, and sometimes you put i.imgur.com/uSiRh2G.png (Neded to type it, as YT doesn't let to paste links with screenshot) Prodigy when you were playing Source. Besides this, video is SWEET!
I've read so much negative stuff about the Source... such unforgivable bullshit. It looks uglier, but sounds nowhere as bad as people say it does. A tiny bit worse than the Prodigy, but to say that it is "a bad Moog" or a bad anything is just immature.

The Moog Source is the best sounding and most musical Moog ever made
:))
:))
Nah, the minimoog sounds better,
Sound battle Moog Prodigy (1979-1984) vs. Moog Source (1981-1985)
01 VCO 1 & 2 saw wave + filter resonance: Moog Prodigy 0:00:07 / Moog Source 0:00:49
02 Pulse wave bass sound + filter resonance: Moog Prodigy 0:01:27 / Moog Source 0:02:09
03 Theremin sound with filter resonance: Moog Prodigy 0:02:47 / Moog Source 0:03:16
04 Saw wave octave lead sound: Moog Prodigy 0:03:45 / Moog Source 0:04:11
05 Filter modulation LFO sine & Square: Moog Prodigy 0:04:39 / Moog Source 0:05:24
06 VCO sync: Moog Prodigy 0:06:01 / Moog Source 0:06:14
07 VCO sync with pitch modulation: Moog Prodigy 0:06:27 / Moog Source 0:06:49
08 Deep bass sound: Moog Prodigy 0:07:07 / Moog Source 0:07:31

+synths colors both are great, both are made for music and fun.
thanks a lot for watching and your comment! :)
Yes, Two Superb, Highly Attaching Machines !
My Pleasure... Keep Sharing These ! ;- ) )
the prodigy sounds like its filter is more open than the source. great comparison!
Both are beautiful!
yes sure! :)
I love both. Prodigy seems to have fuller-sounding oscillators.
prodigy is a wild ride // unhinged
Both sound amazing but I gotta say my preference is the Prodigy. The Source seems to handle deep bass better though.
I own a source. It is not recorded "as is" but sweetened with delay, reverb and what not. Anyway awsome synth. Model D is my alltime bass favourite
Wow! Sehr gut gemacht! Beides schöne Synths :)
+Wein Glas (Weinglas) Danke! :)
Da hast du recht.
Well worthy of a stand off :-)) bravo Marko

Der Prodigy is perfekt zum tweaken und klingt großartig.
Prodigy has it going on...my vote is with it.
Your found the perfect frequency for making my brain resonate. It almost exploded.
:D
For bass and VCO: Prodigy.
For filters and theremin: Source.
the moog prodigy
no doubt for me: Prodigy is my winner hands down - its warm sound shakes soul and guts while the Source sounds a little bit colder and metallic.
+soogoonu :)
Is the Source going through reverb?
Very nice!
+Steve Franklin thank you.
The Source sounds just a bit richer but I guess the Prodigy is more intuitive to controle since it has the classic knobs and switches. If I would be a band leader with enough money I would propably choose the Prodigy for the stage and the Source for the studio.
+derLPMaxe good choice!
+derLPMaxe Funny I went the Opposite way, Cause of the Source's Ease of use and Memory presets and touch pad control for stage use. I thought the Prodigy had a richer sound and Longer to "Dial-in" for studio work.
skyprop Tweaking different parameters at once is more important to me on stage.

Source is better.

Fair enough!
have you turned on EVERY synth in you're room and made music all at once?
yes :)
For me, The Source!

cool, photographic, i have dm's actual prodigy that they really used
Great sounding both different caracter

I would like to have both! I have a Source but I certainly wouldn't mind having a Prodigy!
is that dial on the source sketchy? or is the filter cutoff really a finger work out?
works perfect :9
I had a moog source and the prodigy goes lower, more raw and organic in it's sound. As soon as there's anything digital in any synth you lose some of what makes analogue sound special.
agree with you
I love the Source! I was always put off by the lack of knobs and the membrane control panel...Then I played one myself and changed my mind!
+James Reeno It reminds me of an old school paddle controller!
Me too I love my source..
I'm not sure what makes the Source sound so much nicer to my ears. I haven't researched this, but I assume both use the same ladder filter, so maybe the filter is driven harder in the Source?

source is great for funk. and the filter distorts like a minimoog, if not better then a minimoog in my opinion.
the source owns the prodigy.in fact the source gives the mini a run for its money
More great synths
Sound great! My Sub 37 though a Strymon BigSky sounds awesome too. What you running these through?
+Eoin O'Callaghan (Best Boy Grip) thanks. :)
I used only a bit delay.
Mr. Retrosound, It may be my ears or it may be the video, but imo, the Source sounds more like a Minimoog Voyager while the Prodigy sounds more like a Minimoog Model D. What do you think? Ed Collins no. The source is closer to the Model D.
Is it prodigy mk1 or mk2? thanks for the demos :)
Model 336BX
What the synth or synths you used in the sound of your opening videos? Sounds like Playstation 1 in Sony logo part!
+Lucas Rosa Moog Taurus Bass, VP-330, DX7 II
+RetroSound the solid sound in the second note is awesome! :)
"Prodidy."
😔 *sigh*
I heard Vangelis in there :)
so which one wins in your opinion ? based on name and look alone I'd go with the source. the filter is better on the prodigy though
for deep bass sounds Source and for lead sounds Prodigy
Prodigy
Source Vs Minimoog!!!!
That’s actually a fairer comparison
excellent synth battle. Now I know my OSC one on source does not work. I'm a fool ;(
+David Lanfair ;)
thanks
Prodigy for mine
:)
Wow, you have all the cool toys don't you.
+Paul TheSkeptic not all. but the most ;)
***** Well, I still want to come over and play at your house.

+Ashatur Der Source läßt sich leichter unterbringen. Der Prodigy klingt rotziger. Beide klingen aber toll.
I think they sound better than my sub 37 😱😱😱😱
+Howard Forton ;) maybe
You'll never beat a Sub 37. Run it through a reverb pedal.
Thxx💁 interesting
+lookapi :)
MOOG!!!! Using lower case letters in their name before ANYBODY else switched over! Beat that KORG and your angry all caps!
too bad vintage Korg is difficult to service. otherwise KORG ALL THE WAAY!! :-)
Source of course! Get an encore midi kit and get transported in to the 21th century. Realtime control with ctrlr panel ( not only filter). I bought my source back in 1982 and it has served me well bog standard, but I upgraded it recently which gives it its second life. But please get somebody who can actually play to do the demos. +Алексей Вольнов sample/hold is great. unfortunately no clock in for the sequencer/arpeggiator in the first revision.
the sound from both is a bit different but good.
+RetroSound Your Prodigy has CV gate? Did you buy it already installed or did you get CV installed later? Is it expensive to install CV in the old model of Prodigy?
Mr. RetroSound, which one do you like the best?
+speedtribejp I like both a lot. very different sound and concept.
+RetroSound But if you choose only one, which one? ;)
+speedtribejp The Prodigy was one of my first synths ever and I love this beast.

:)
Prodigy!

Prodigy the best!

yes a lot bullshit. :D
fantastic synth.
I think it's the best looking Moog ever made. As for the sound, it walks all over the prodigy in my opinion :)
I've never heard anyone say the Source sounds bad. I think it's generally regarded as one of the best sounding synths Moog ever made.
ganz gross (wie immer) d^_^)b
+SlimMixer kleine synths, ganz groß ;)
danke Red! :)
Prodigy much warmer
why PRODIDY????
+Mike Pingas I did this. :D
+RetroSound Т___Т
Prodigy (or Prodidy haha) wins on everything but the first VCO comparison.
The Prodigy just seems fuller most times during the shootout, but the Source seems to have a crisper & more complex filter.
Theremin is more convincing on the Source in my opinion. For the Octave Lead shootout, the Prodigy seems more organic as the Source had like a "chorusy" sound. LFO filter modulation was pretty much identical for both.
Prodigy is warmer sounding and analog.🎹✌🏻️
Joel Izquierdo they're BOTH analog!
Joel Izquierdo source is analog too.
Prodigy is more deep.
Prodigy is way better than the Source IMO.
Prodigy wins easily
