In this video, Berklee Online instructor Erin Barra explains the synthesizer basics on amplitude, filters, envelopes, oscillators, frequency, timbre, LFO, and modulation. She goes into detail about how amplitude works, how an envelope shapes the evolution of a sound, how oscillators work in synthesizers, and how frequency is really just the number of times a waveform repeats each second and is measured.

I've seen various videos on sound design and synth fundamentals but this explained it so well that I actually understood these things for the first time. Every example, simile, metaphor, and analogy was ON POINT and helped me grasp the concepts better. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Berklee_Online Do you guys have a specific course for only synths?
I've attended various institutions of higher education, and never have I seen an educator like this. This was absolutely incredible.
@kaz z Wow! Nobody cares! Thanks for the input though

Great explanation on synthesis , complex ideas with analogies! My major at Berklee was music synthesis so it’s also very satisfying that Berklee has a great educator explaining these ideas online and free to start. You want to go in deeper than take their online courses!
Absolutely fantastic presentation and information fashioned in a way that is very easy to grasp. Much appreciated!
Notice how well she defines the words used, such as envelope or frequency. This is so good for understanding
Your a genius, this is a great presentation. It quite literally explained everything I need to understand how a basic sound system works. I'm working on a project right now in the Unreal Engine that requires me to generate my own sounds and I haven't explored those systems yet so this really helped me a ton.
This is was just the explanation I needed. I could never grasp what the envelope did. The LFO Cutoff explanation just changed my life.
Wish I would have found this over the summer when I first got started with synths! Great presentation!
Funny how I've used many of these terms every day for my entire life and never contextualized them with their core physical meaning. Thanks for a great video and I'll never let my ego talk me out of watching a "basics" lecture again. 🙂
Thank you!
Holy crap my life has meaning now! :D
Erin - you are a TRULY gifted teacher!
thank you for a quick and informative lesson...I had to go over and look at my synth several times during the video to see how it all ties together!
This video blew my mind. Helped clarify so many terms that get thrown around in such a thoughtful way!
Thank you!
one of the best instructional videos I've seen in a long time - great job!
I'm years late to finding this video but absolutely love it. Just dipping my toes in sound production and hadn't found someone explaining these things just the way I wanted until now.
Thanks for the video!
This was so extremely on point and descriptive. It helped me visualize concepts that I'd already learned long ago but hadn't ground into my understanding as solidly as I have now.
Absolutely excellent presentation, thank you very much.
This is just one of the best videos in the history of the internet. Amazingly entertaining and clear.
Well done, I've never seen these topics explained so simply and clearly!

Good job whoever the narrator is!
You forgot Granny Smith apples which are by the greatest of all of the apples. The video was very insightful but this greatly upset me.
Ambrosia, take it from someone who handed out apple samples
It's all about the honeycrisps, baby.
Wonderfully concise.
Excellent job. Acknowledging the limits of the format and the wish to be brief, I would have truly appreciated a section on signal path(s), OR a linked part 2. If there's a part 2, I am missing it?
This has helped me so much.
great explanation! thx!
