I was there & nearly ruptured a vocal cord BEFORE a performance with Corelli, et al; let alone during the performance. It was like a reaction to a grand slam homer, bottom of 9th; 0-2 count & 2 men out! GOG - those were the days!!!!!
I was at the Met in 1971 to see Ernani with Arroyo, Domingo, Milnes and Siepi...Domingo cancelled at the last minute and was replace by...Franco Corelli!
Oh, Mr. Bing ..... you had such great opportunities!!!! what an amazing would be there on the performance .... TITO GOBBI, FRANCO CORELLI and RENATA TEBALDI in TOSCA. It's amazing. Thank you so much for historic document and enjoyment!!!
Haha, this is a fun clip! I was pretty nervous for a minute there, thinking "Gee, will my tickets go to waste???" :) But poor Mr. Morrell... the audience did not seem to care at all that he was sick. :-p
What a lovely video, very moving and uplifting. Thank you so much for posting this - I am impressed by all your wonderful videos racheleeba - it's all a mystery to me where these live recordings come from!
@HM0880 In 1981, Luciano Pavarotti "cancelled" a number of performances of L'ELISIR D'AMORE at Lyric Opera of Chicago, including the opening one, which was my subscription performance. Similarly, I was elated when I heard on WFMT that Sig. Pavarotti's replacement for the first several performances would be: CARLO BERGONZI. And, indeed, Sig. Bergonzi not only didn't disappoint, but he was OUTSTANDING that night!!!!!
I'll tell you what: I have this performance on CD, and IT IS JUST PHENOMENAL!!! And Corelli DID sing a number of other performances of Cavaradossi later in the run of TOSCA this season, including the broadcast on April 18 (which was a tour performance in Boston), so he WAS scheduled for the part - just not this performance. Thank you VERY much for sharing this clip with us!!!!!
Yes, I was there - what a great gift provided by Sir Rudy! Rumor circulated that this "substitution" was all planned! I was one of those grateful fans screaming his head off!
Corelli was certainly not one to step in as a replacement just for kicks - he was very careful with his voice and canceled even when he was scheduled to sing. Poor Mr. Morrell.
I defenetly would have been one of the "screamers"....a very lucky audience indeed !! Thank you so much @racheleleeba for this , as Candy put it~ operatic time bomb, and thank you dear Candy for sharing it with me.
I think it was in 1971 January 8 or 16.Of course is MET. It was a great ovation also. I find it interesting because in 1968 Domingo's MET carrier started with replacing Corelli in Adriana Lecouvreur, and I didn't know, that he gave back the cradit.
I was at a MET performance of Wagner's Die Walküre in 1989. The Brünhilde Jeannine Altmeyer was ill and barely made it through Act 2, but she had to quit before Act 3. When it was announced that Hildegard Behrens would take her place, the crowd reacted similarly as they did at this Tosca occasion. Whohoo!
@TheWisemonkey8 I'm just wondering if Corelli was the "understudy" for this role! (Probably not. :D) Or maybe he just happened to be in NYC, heard of Morrell's cold, and decided that singing Cavaradossi would be a jolly evening's entertainment. (Again... probably not. :D)
@HM0880 Well, by 1981, Carlo Bergonzi was a little past his pristine vocal prime, but he was still very, very good. I also got to see Bergonzi at Lyric Opera in 1971, as (coincidentally) Mario Cavaradossi in TOSCA, in the first season of that wonderful production staged by Tito Gobbi and designed by Pier Luigi Pizzi, with Janis Martin as Floria Tosca and Mr. Gobbi himself as Baron Scarpia, as well as Italo Tajo as the Sacristan and Florindo Andreolli as Spoletta. Nino Sanzogno conducted.
Well, this March 22, 1964, performance was with Renata Tebaldi. Corelli substituted for Barry Morrell. The link you've provided is for the March 19, 1965, performance, the date of Callas' return to the Met. Cavaradossi was to have been performed by Richard Tucker, but he had another commitment.
***** Wrong - Callas was scheduled for two performances of Tosca. The first was with Corelli, as Cavaradossi, the second with Tucker, also scheduled. Corelli sang a magnificent concert at St. John's University during the second (Tucker) Callas Tosca.

What a great document of this moment which I had read about but never heard on a recording. Thank you!!
I like to see this video quite often ! Certainly the spectators that had the chance to listen to Corelli live, should have had great emotions
What a wonderful clip! Thank you!
Thanks again for your wonderful videos. Wish I had had the opportunity to be there and scream my lungs out.
I definitely would have been one of the screaming crowd
I have a recording of Ernani. Placido Domingo was sceduelled, but he becama ill. The anouncement is that he was replaced by Franco Corelli.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS, MY FRIEND, WE THOUGHT THEY'D NEVER END, WE'D SING & DANCE FOREVER AND A DAY!
You hit the nail on the head. What wonderful times.

Aquellos días en que el público amaba el VERDADERO ARTE.

What great operatic memories you have. Thanks for sharing. :)

Joy!🎉😃🎉
Wow! Just imagine!
racheleleeba MUCHAS GRACIA, ÉSTO ES UN MARAVILLA
What does Bing say at the end? The subtitles stop, but the laughter doesn’t.
@jmccracken1963
Wow, thanks for this info. It must be amazing to have heard the great singers in their prime!
Wonderful video .
What does Bing say from 1:19 ? many thanks
He's asking the audience to be patient with Mr Corelli because he's stepping in on short notice.
Alex Thomas Thank You
I thought he was saying, "It's very, very gracious of Mr. Corelli to step in at the last second," but I wasn't sure, so I didn't add it. :)
***** Oh maybe. I'm not sure either now. :-l
Alex Thomas Many thanks
