  • A quick wizz around and first impressions of just some of the cars at Fully Charged Everything Electric Show which took place recently at London Excel, featuring;
    The new Ford Explorer Electric SUV. A shared MEB platform with Volkswagens ID.4 and now available to order
    Kia EV9 the HUGE new electric 6 or 7 seater Family SUV. There’s not many an electric car with more than 5 seats so at the moment this holds quite a unique position and my word it’s a beast!
    Volvo EX30 - a compact little thing full of beautiful design details.
    The absolutely bonkers Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. It’s nothing like the ordinary Ioniq 5… it’s stronger, meaner and a lot faster. Totally track capable and highly regarded as the most fun EV money can buy. I WANT ONE !
    Silence SO4 is unveiled - tiny little city car that fits like a glove.
    Smart #3 is quirky and alternative albeit with in my opinion a crude plastic centre console. Brabus is really fast!
    Omada E5 is a new Chinese entry. Couldn’t find much to say about it really.
    Love some of the electric converted classics such as the Mustang and especially the Datsun 240Z
    BYD were busy making a song and dance (literally!). The Seal is rather like the Tesla Model 3 Highland isn’t it. Better seats although I’m not a fan of the centre plastic centre console and the rotating screen.
    And lots more to see plus many great new solutions for efficient home heating and hot water.
    If you went, what were your highlights and thoughts? I only had about an hour to wizz round so I’m keen to hear all the things I missed and what you were impressed by!

    I have had my EV9 6 seat GTS for 2 months now and put 4000 miles on it .... I have 3 6 foot teenage boys and a granny in the car regularly with plenty of space and they all Love it ..... more important for me is that as temperatures have normalised my starting range every day now is around the 300 mile level but even in the very cold January is Scotland I was getting around 240 to 260 miles of range ..... It charges easily at home on 7kw and I have used Tesla Superchargers, Ionity and local council chargers all without incident now .... Its comfortable and packed with neat tech ..... I replaced my BMW iX with this Kia and have not regretted it for an instant ... its brilliant.... and I used to be a real badge snob.

      Can you really compare the BMW iX to the EV9? Genuine question. I’d be interested to know what if anything the iX did/does better than the EV9. The jump out thing for me would be the luxurious feel the iX presumably has over the hardwearing and durable interior finish of the EV9. But interested to hear your view. Thanks in advance.

      @@Antiguan_Dart the KIA does not feel less luxurious than the BMW
      Only thing I would say is that the BMW infotainment is more refined but that improves all the time with updates
      BMW was just too small in the boot but we liked it a lot when we had it

    I saw the Kia EV9 at a reveal in the North of England in September 2023 - An amazing EV - I agree the materials are durable rather than luxurious and it’s built on that fantastic EGMP platform so super fast charging of a 99.8kWh battery. Buttons and levers will appeal to those less interested in a minimalist interior. And the level of equipment and comfort across all three rows is fantastic.
    Heat and ventilated front seats and massage drivers seat, Second row - heated and ventilated with window blinds, climate control, USB sockets, cupholders and individual lighting. Third row seats with ventilation, USB, cupholders and individual lighting.
    And second row seats are captain chairs which can rotate 180 degrees to face third row. (vehicle needs to be stationary and second row door opened to allow the rotation) Or second row can be optioned as a bench for 7 seats.
    Throw in vehicle to load (V2L) and heat pump and it really has got everything.
    Not cheap. But features per pound unparalleled in my opinion in the category.

    Great reviews! Saw the EV9 at Ferndown, is a huge car, a few spotted on the roads too!
    BYD will certainly appeal to many, I did read that they don't have pre-conditioning via the app?
    The Ioniq5 N looks like a petrol heads dream! They will embrace EVs at some point!
    I'm still on the fence with converting perfectly good ICE cars, different story if a conversion saves the vehicle from the scrapyard!

    Was great running into you in the EX30 and another amazing video! I'd say the Model 3 Highland and Ora o3 impressed me the most but the MG4 Xpower and Ioniq 5 N were definitley the most fun to drive - the Cyberster and converted classic Mini probably caught my eye the most and an honourable mention to the Silence it was pretty good just too expensive. I will say the EX30 and Dolphin were dissapointing to drive due to their interior feel and weak regen.

    I love the I 5 N, but would never buy one as I’d never be able to use all that power and I assume the range is less. It’s the kind of car you want a friend to buy so you can ride in it. The ID Buzz looks awesome to me, I think it’s going to be a big hit here in the US. I’ll be happy with the refreshed I5 with more range, a rear wiper and some satisfying new buttons on the console. I’d like to see VW do the same. Give me buttons and knobs and stalks. Tactile. 😊

    The Ford Explorer could be a big hit if Ford price it right.

    The Hyundai Ioniq 5N is really good looking, but they took an allready good design and made it even better.

    Thank you Richard and Gints. Another informative and entertaining video, packed wtih useful facts and opinion.
    One tiny critique if I may though. Please brush up on the use of the word electronic, as opposed to electrical. They are different terms and I am sure I am not alone in finding their misuse frustrating to hear. Door openers, towing hitch releases and seat back releases are all electrical. The term electronic indicates some form of intelligence and the ability to run a program. Usually this means some form of silicon chip involvement.
    Just a nit picky point, but I really love the way you guys go about your videos and I want them to convey your evident competance and professionalism.

    I’ve been excited about going electric for several years, and had placed deposits on the Rivian, Fisker Ocean and Cadillac Lyriq, but I don’t have a high voltage outlet in my garage. After getting quotes to add the necessary lines, meter and installation I was looking at an additional $7000 (US) just to get started.
    I still want to experience the convenience of at home charging and no more gas station visits, but as a retiree it’s hard to justify the expense. Any advice that I may have overlooked?

      It depends on how much you drive. I have about a 15 mile commute and a PHEV with just a 3 kW onboard charger. I can easily add 50 miles of range over night. So I imagine you could do more than 100 with a 7 kW charger. The level 2 charger is just a convenience really. They are more efficient than a level 1 I hear, so that’s a consideration. But not necessary for most folks.

    • @edwardhackett-jones8126
      @edwardhackett-jones8126 2 місяці тому

      In the UK our home chargers are 7kw, 32amp (I think), 240v.
      We also have a “granny charger” which we can plug into a normal domestic 240v outlet, which runs at max 10amp (on a Tesla, anyway). These work ok for low mileage drivers in the UK. As a retiree you might be fine with the USA equivalent, which plugs into your 120v outlet. It’s slower than ours, and it adds around 40 miles in a 8 hour charge to a Tesla Y, I think.

    • @Antiguan_Dart
      @Antiguan_Dart 2 місяці тому +1

      The initial cost for a level 2 home charger can quickly be off set if you have access to a good over night tariff the fuel cost saving recoups the investment cost compared to fuelling an ice in just 12 months in the UK.
      Say a £1000 7.4 kW charger installation.
      If doing 10,000 miles a year off home charging with a tariff of 9.5p/kWh and your vehicles gives you 3.5miles/kWh that’s 2.7p/mile fuel cost c 10,000 miles is £270 for the year.
      An ICE might do 50mpg or 50 miles per 4.546 litres. In the UK a litre of petrol is £1.519. So 50 miles per £6.91 which is 13.8p/mile for 10,000 miles £1,381!
      See over a £1000 saving in the first year. Plus in the UK no road tax, no Congestion charge no ULEZ restriction servicing interval probably 2 years compared to 1 year and certainly cheaper and if a new EV likely free.
      Yes there’s the upfront cost compared to an equivalent ICE but sounds like you’ve made that decision- for me it was on-going cheaper running, service and reliability costs going into retirement, green credentials (zero pipe emissions) and the driving characteristics of Electric ( near silent, torque ). I’ll not mention tech as virtually all of it adaptive cruise control, lane centre assist , auto park is available in ICE too.
      Good luck on whatever you decide.
      Depending on your location you could even offer you installed charger for use by others through Apps like Co-charger, Zap Map, Joosup, JustPark. Offering a rate better than public charging but still making you a profit over your £/kWh cost.
      In my area the best overnight public charging is around 44p/kWh, I charge 35p/kWh which is a good 20% saving over public charging and close to many people’s normal home tariff. But a 25.5p/kWh profit on what I pay. So for a 45kWh overnight charge that’s over £10 profit per night that I hire my charger to a member of the public.
      Typically I only need to charge once a week. So that’s upto 6 nights a week I can hire out my charger.
      If I don’t do any road trips my own charging needs are fully subsidised every month with just two or three “customers” a month.

If I could have a high-spec ID.3 or Cupra Born, with the new higher-powered ID.4 rear motor, and a 77kWh pack, for the cost of a Tesla M3 RWD, preferably for less, then the European cash-register would ring it's bell.
