From what I have read, Barley is one of many grains, legumes and seeds that has Phytic Acid in it which is not digestible by humans. Apparently, Phytic Acid also inhibits the body's absorption of some essential trace minerals such as zinc and iron. I believe this is why it is good to let it soak, aside from it softening the barley prior to actually cooking it. Here is a link to Wikipedia about Phytic Acid en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytic_acid
On the page you cited, barley is not listed as a source for Phytic acid, and most beans, rice and grains are. I am not sure why you chose to comment about this regarding barley.
Yes, if you don't rinse it and do it the right way it does come up slimy because it has ALOT of starch. I cook mine in an Instant Pot and use low salt/fat chicken broth instead of water.
That is a serious size cooking pot, unlike what other instructions show that only fits 1 cup. If I'm making something for 24 hours, then it should be sufficient for a few meals. While soaking takes time, I don't have to watch it for burning or overflowing. I only cook crushed barley with ¼ proportion of milk, which removes any bitter taste from the grain shells. Crushed cooks faster, and isn't in any way pre-processed. But I will try some whole grains with soaking.
There are certainly lots of details like that to take into consideration. That is a nice level to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as common inspiration however clearly there are questions like the one you bring up the place crucial thing can be working in trustworthy good faith. I don?t know if finest practices have emerged around issues like that, but Im certain that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Each boys and girls really feel the impression of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
The geniuses in this comments thread is astounding! I feel honored to have viewed the same video as such intelligent individuals! *eyeroll* you can tell the people who NEVER cook anything besides microwave meals...
All they had at the store was Roasted Barley, so when I was ready to cook it, Ivfound on the back that it was for TEA! Can I cook it and eat this kind?
You need a much larger strainer with slightly larger holes to let crumbs and insect eggs etc out and so you can just shake and swirl it. A Better fast job.. 😉
If you prepared barley during a SHTF soaking overnight is a great idea. during SHTF you dont want to use scarce fuel any longer then necessary 20minutes to cook is to long lMO nice video miss your english is fine..i have a mango farm in zambonga city.🤗
you actually drained out all the beneficial enzymes out of barley by throwing away the water. these grains have goods n u dont throw away the water!! hence barley water!
why do people act like chemists? As if the water actively seeps out the enzyme of any food in which it is cooked... It was cooked for 15 mins.. not for a couple of hours!! The enzymes is still present in the barley. You aren't eating barley stripped away of its nutrients if you wanted to do that you have to cook it for hours until it decomposes. Then you can ferment it into beer.
Totally misleading. However, there is a brand of barley out there that I recently discovered that actually DOES cook in 15 minutes. I actually cut it with white rice and cook them together in our rice cooker. It's called Mochi Mugi. Have you ever heard of them? www.mochimugi.com
+spaceballkrs1, Thank you for your comment. My husband cooked a 24 pound turkey for this past Thanksgiving holiday dinner. He soaked the turkey in a seasoned brine solution for 8+ hours and baked/cooked it in the oven for 3 hours. Just like the cook time for the turkey was only 3 hours, the cook time for the barley was only 10-15 minutes.
spaceballkrs1 If you want your barely sooner, instead of soaking it, you can do this: Boil the barely for a minute, then rinse it and put back in your pan with new water. Summer on Med-High heat for an hour. Drain the remaining water, and rinse the barley with warm water. Enjoy! (Instead of 24 hours, you can have your barely in 2 hours!)
The title should be "How to cook barley in 24 hours and 15 minutes". Very misleading. The video also lacks some major details: - Does the grain need to soak at room temperature or refrigerated? - What is the cooking temperature. High, mid high, medium? - Do you bring the water to a boil, or just simmer? - At what point does the "fifteen" minutes start? - What is the expectation of consistency throughout the cooking process? Should the grain soften 2 minutes into the process? This video was of zero help.
-Should I wear an apron while cooking this? -Should my dog be in the kitchen with me, or out in the backyard playing with a ball? -Do I have to pay my gas bill before or after cooking this? -Should I be watching TV during the entire process? -Do I absolutely have to wear socks while cooking this?
Although your response is comedic, it is irrelevant. Any cooking recipe or instructions would include the information I pointed out. Your listed includes items that would have zero impact on the process or outcome of the final product. Go troll somewhere else.
Jason Cordero The title is correct. It only took 15 minutes to cook, but 24 hours and 15 minutes to prepare=). But you are correct about the details, they could have been clearer. Maybe Google will help me with those...haha=).
Please use gentle words as this lovely young lady is sooo kind to share her knowledge with us all. Thank you darling and I am very grateful for your video. Bless you.
Thank you - I bought some on an impulse, but then I wasn’t sure how to prepare it. Very helpful!
The title should be “how to cook barley in 10 minutes with a 24hr prep”
Bingo.
😂😂

Yeah I know. WTF?

Don't listen to haters....
this look like a smart way to cook barley...!!!

Barley is a hearty addition to Buffalo or Beef stew. I just drop it in and cook it right in the gravy. Also delicious in ox tail dishes.

do not use hot water to rince.it has heavy metals in it.cold water only for better health.
+alan cameron, thanks for the tip.
Ok so here is how to really do it. Put Pot Barley in a large glass bowl. Add spices if desired. Add 3x water. Microwave on high for 15 minutes.
Honey ,You are showing the washing ,,,How did you cook it ?
Perfect - thank you!
Nice only take 24 hrs and 15 min 🙂
i wanna eat now not tomorrow.
I'd like to know how to serve it or how to dress it. Seems to me it wouldn't be as tasty to serve as is.

If I understand barley by the video, you have barley groats there? The entire barley grain (with the fiber) and NOT barley pearls or pearled barley?
Barley grains
let's use some common sense here, if you want to cook it fast, dump it in a pressure cooker.
Only 15 min,??
Wat hv u shown?
That's not 15 minutes that took over 24 hours.
So you didn't notice the word 'cook'?
LOL..."cook".
"Prep" time - 24 hours + time for rinsing
"Cook" time - 15 minutes.

I read barely has very dangerous sides effects is that tru 😫😫??
I read your text have very dangerous sides effects
Shouldn't the title be "how to cook barley in 34 hours 15 minutes"?
That ain't no 15 minutes
Where is the cooking part of this video? 15 minutes At a simmer?
Sooooo 15 minutes and a day
In 15 minutes ???????😂
wrong this method takes 24hrs and 15 minutes
24 hours and 15 minutes ☹️
Rubbish all nutrients thrown by washing again after soaking
Putting the strainer in the kitchen sink.very unhealthy.🤔
24 hours + 15 min NOPE.

Jason Cordero get over yourself - real cooks understand these things and dont need a step-by-step like in a cookbook!
