  • For 2022 Hyundai has killed off the regular Veloster in America due to sagging demand for the quirky 3-door hatch (OK, technically a 4-door if you count that hatch.) Thankfully however the absolutely bonkers Veloster N continues to be available! If you're looking for one of the best performance values in America, snap one up while supplies last...

Thank you for not dragging on about the "firm/track mode"!
To me, most cars are way too soft and it's nice the manufacturer gives you the option to adjust. Most reviewers expect cars to drive soft/compliant in every mode...and it's simply a disservice to those of us who enjoy a lot of road feedback.
I still think there are some alpha males that still exist without complaining about a car that's fun.
I can't say I agree with you about the automatic/DCT rant. Even though automatic cars are faster these days, it's still not the interactive option.

Possibly, but mostly because the Kona has a more useful back seat and a much, much nicer interior. If they keep the price competitive and the performance similar (2.5t?), it will have broader appeal. It's not all that tall or shaped that differently than something like the GTI.

Picked mine up 4/19 and over 25k miles. I would go MT every time, and although that DCT is a better straight line speed, I enjoy the full engagement and it just feels right. I paid just under 29k after discounts and as far as I'm concerned, quite the bargain. The car overall is very plain compared to most New cars and I could care less, driving is everything 😀.

I was able to race the CTR and he was able to pull on me around 40mph-60mph, then it's neck and neck. I actually smoke him occasionally when I hit it correctly. We also have a nice curvy road that we follow each other down and I am always able to pull away in the tight twisties. It's a smaller car than the CTR and really seems easier to push to the limit. After driving the two next to each other, I would definitely take the N again, to me it is a better car for less money and more fun. The CTR seems like a faster top end car that is better suited to the track IMO, the Veloster kicks it's ass on the street and surprises the Hondas 🤣🤣🤣. I also folded the seats down and my wife And I had plenty of room for some old school struggle buggie 😀

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 3 роки тому +1

As nearly always Alex manages to get to the heart of the matter in terms of comparisons between the Veloster N and its rivals. The Hyundai is unquestionably the "best" Hot Hatch if track performance and price are the top priorities for a buyer. Personally, though, I spend virtually all my time in a car on public roads of one form or another. My very occasional track days are spent on two wheels rather than four. And even if that were not the case I can't imagine more than 2%-5% of my miles would ever be spent on a track.
So for me, the GTI's versatility makes it the elusive "unicorn" vehicle. Excellent for deserted mountain roads on an early Sunday morning. Comfortable for a trip with my wife, daughter, and big dog. Easy to live as a daily driver, especially when I have to deal with Seattle's nightmare traffic. And even suitable for those trips to Costco for multiple five gallon jars of mayo and a big screen TV.
The power of the GTI's remarkable EA888 engine is more than sufficient for my driving. But if I want more, a Stage I ECU tune is an inexpensive mod that runs a few hundred dollars and about 30 minutes. (That mod on my previous MK6 GTI transformed its performance and cost me only a couple of mpgs over 40K miles). And if I'm willing to spend more there's always the Golf R.
Bottom line? Mr. Biermann and his colleagues at Hyundai have done an excellent job in the Veloster N (as well as other "N" models). But for me, replacing my GTI with the Veloster N prompts the same feeling as replacing the family dog.

I test drove a blue one when they came out and damn what power! I was conflicted on the color, I liked
that there was a special color for the N model but call it what you want, it’s baby blue and just not my thing. Why not a metallic blue or battleship grey? The 3 doors was a turn off, I wish it was just a 2 door. Who was calling for a 3 door anyway? I ended up buying a Honda Civic SI 2 door which is a second slower but I got it new for $22,200 and what won me over was the limited slip and adjustable suspension. I can achieve an honest 40 mpg on the freeways with no traffic. And plenty of torque.

The Veloster N has the same problem it has always had then. The interior is horrible and the ride is uncomfortable.
Every. Single. Person. who rides in it I have ever talked to or have ever watched says the EXACT same thing: put the suspension in the lightest setting and leave it. The light setting is firm enough already. And by extension, it's way too firm for the "light" setting. That's not excusable for a daily. You can't excuse sacrificing your back on something you plan to use so often.
And do I really need to say anything about the interior? It's uncomfortable and cheap and nothing more. I'm not expecting a Mazda but it shouldn't feel like it was made like a Hot Wheels you're never supposed to see the inside of.
Great exterior. Great dimensions. Great performance. Bad daily option.
I had hoped the Mk8 would be great enough to depose this as best option, but VW forgetting that people need to use the car when designing it killed that. Mazda is allergic to anything that isn't a just fine 6 speed automatic. CTR is on holiday. Elantra N went to the 10th gen Civic school of front bumper design. Kona N has a massive uphill climb to accomplish fixing body roll.
Praying Acura doesn't screw up the Integra.
But, realistically, feels like I'm just gonna get stuck with sucking up the "just fine" Mazda 3 automatic. Hell, maybe they'll drop an RX-9 with a more powerful version of the MX-30 hybrid's system and I'll have a nice goal to save up for.

Alex, please pardon the glib nature of my comment. As an auto journalist you should be well versed on the car you’re reviewing. The color of this Veloster N is Performance Blue. Listening to you repeatedly refer to the color as “periwinkle blue” is not only annoying but may also be a bit disconcerting to the manufacturer.

He's describing the color, not naming it. It is absolutely a periwinkle color. Manufacturers can make up whatever color name they want but the rest of us will simply call it what it is.

@@falkin42 Thanks for the explanation. Alex is known for sharing great detail about each car he’s reviewing. He usually never “describes” the color. I’m quite sure that he didn’t review the window sticker or quite simply forgot the name of the color. I’m not a Hyundai/Kia fan body nor do I own one. Just as an observation, Alex seemed particularly unprepared on this review.

I can't stand that big mouth black plastic grill and cheesy H emblem...it just spells cheap throw away Korean junk. I don't know what happened to the stylish understated grill, but even Mercedes has these huge emblems that look like gaudy Flavor Flav alarm clock medallions.

They're using them as a place for all of the lidar sensors and cameras and stuff, so they need to be big. They have to go somewhere.

@@markmiller3279 how about behind the grill or windshield? I have that stuff on my car and there's no giant grills and huge emblems. I think it's a current style, the huge almost vertical grills esp.on SUV's and trucks. Looks like shit to me, like the giant ghetto wheels on trucks now. Just over the top gaudiness.

Every sports car review from Alex consists of 10 minutes of him incorrectly telling you the DCT is better. What he will never mention is the DCT increases weight which caused Hyundai to increase the suspension rate which results in an even harsher ride quality on a car that already drove harshly. DCT also has lacks the immediate punch from a stand still. This is like watching CNN

Depends on what you value. The reliability is decent and it's simple, so the things that break should be cheap to fix. The rear seat is actually useable by adults for short distances, or kids for longer. The trunk is a very decent size. In all these ways the Veloster is a pretty solid inexpensive little car. Take the N and you also get a quick car that handles pretty well. It's not cheap, and the interior is very basic, but it does exactly what it was designed to do. The price is probably too high, but Hyundai knows there isn't much current competition.
