  • The 2000 season marked the end of Don Nehlen's 21-year reign as head coach of the WVU football program. He felt that the program needed another push to reach the next level, and after a bitter last-second defeat by Syracuse he made the decision to retire. Over the next three weeks WVU won enough games to become bowl eligible, and accepted a bid to the Music City Bowl to play the University of Mississippi -- and a young Eli Manning, who nearly pulled off a comeback win. (Unfortunately the highlight video does not show Manning's effort at all.)
More of a tribute to Coach Nehlen than a true highlight reel -- the Pitt game isn't mentioned at all (we lost) -- it nevertheless captures the feeling of the team in that critical season before they welcomed their next head coach: Rich Rodriguez.

From 1985 to 2005 I missed a lot of WVU seasons serving in the USAF. I watched when I could. I was always proud and talked smack, even to my Colonel who was a Seminole fan. I love these videos, although I'll admit I didn't recognize the players name. Thank you coach for giving me bragging rights for the ole gold and blue.

Except when he shilled for coal and said the US needs to mine coal like they do in China. When he did that commercial I lost complete and utter respect for him.
It was not long before that hundreds of Chinese miners lost their lives. And, China has killed lots and lots of miners since then.
The whole commercial's object was that REGULATIONS are killing the industry. Ironic??, regulations save lives. But corporations profit less when they have to comply with horrible regulations. Safety is expensive.
Years later, I still hate Nehlen for that.
COAL IS WEST VIRGINIA, COAL IS YOU AND ME.

yeah the good ole days of wvu football, and even when nehlen diden"t have much of a offense to put on the field at times, but he always had a defense that stepped up and smacked people around carrying the blue and gold to pride, unlike this Joe Deforest coaching garbage of today that has disgraced the blue and gold.
