The current FETTEC firmware does NOT support blheli passthrough yet! The Alpha firmware available from the FETTEC discord is expected to have this feature at some point in the future, but for now you still need to plug in a Betaflight FC to do passthrough configuration and flashing of BLHeli ESC's.
Worth noting buzzer emulation and flip over after crash does not work on the Fettec. It does on the kiss ultra they patched the issue. Found out the hard way
Flip crash doesn't work??? Are you sure about that? I test flew these both but I might have been going easy trying not to blow my ESC and not crash flipped. Seems like I would have remembered :-(
You guys might want to double check that. My blheli32 from t motor the flip over after crash worked just fine along with Emulate motor buzzer worked as well. I’ve been running a Fettec g4 in my main quad for a few months now an had no problem with it using the default firmware that came on it. I was too lazy to update it yet In all fairness. I’ve had nothing but a good experience with my setup but every quad is different. Feel free to hit me up if you need any help.
I just built a quad with the FETtec G4 and SpeedyBee BLHeli S ESC. Everything was very easy to set up but I missed the motor order. Using the Alpha software, it may say everything is correct (prop direction and motors spinning according to BF) but the FETtec FC has the motors in a different order as shown. That threw me for a loop until I changed the ESC to say BF config… and then it worked perfectly. That one problem took me more time to figure out than it took me to configure everything else combined.
I broke my u.fl connector on my VTX board. Has to wait a few days for the new connectors to come in. Then I had to use my heat gun to remove the old one, then tin up, flux up and use the heat gun to melt it and use tweezers to drop in the new one. Saved my butt when I continuity tested and saw I bridged under the connector. Did process again and it finally worked. Continuity tester saves
Ooooo, this is very exciting. Have a G4 and a 45A 4:1 ESC in the drawer for my coming build. If the ESC gets wrecked in some crash this option is reassuring to have.
JB - Thanks for not editing out your reverse wire troubleshooting. I've only built a handful of quads, but I have had the task of mixing FC's and ESC's where the wire harness needed to be rewired - and I like quadruple checked and while shitting my pants I plugged a battery in. But that's not the point. I LOVE that you showed the diagnostic continuity test! NOW I understand how to check in the future, without messing my pants. Stayed up last night soldering up this board to a HW 60a esc. Before going to bed i smoke checked it and plugged in a lipo. It did 3 successive beeps twice and stopped but everythinf checked out. Went to sleep happy but it's been bothering me today that it didnt make the usual esc sounds or the sound JB's made in the video. Supposed to be working, but just wanna finish my latest kwad! Lol

Great informative video as always! Was just about to use this fc to try it out. Always feel more confident doing this when I can follow along with your videos. Thank you.👍
Good Video. I would recommend wiring up a custom plug and using the socket on the left side of the FC if using DJI for video. Unfortunately, if using DJI for flight rx you would need to still solder to the board sbus and gnd wires and then configure it in the KISS GUI. FETtec should consider a fully plug and play DJI model. If you dabble in 3D flying, the FETtec KISS G4 has advantages over FCs using Betaflight. 5 inch quads using betaflight, 3D mode MUST have airmode disabled or the quad can wig out and go out of control during transitions. The KISS software does not have that problem. The KISS airmode is a different and superior approach IMHO. Eager for the FC passthrough for BL heli escs. Without that feature, you need a betaflight FC on hand to plug into your BL heli esc, as Joshua pointed out. FETtec 45A esc is plug and play with the G4 but reliability of the esc is an issue. Many reports of failures. Personally, I had two fail. One on the bench during setup which the company replaced. The second failed during flight. 3rd or 4th flight on the quad and it dropped out of the sky. Company did not replace that one, they said it was a fault in my build. Don't agree. Same quad flying beautifully before failure and after failure with a new T motor esc. No issues. Sticking to non FETtec escs for now but do really like the G4 flight controller paired with BLheli esc.
I just installed the g4 on my apex build and had removed the original fettec v1 fc. When I got the g4 installed I have no osd with the dji caddx Vista any idea why. In the kiss gui I set it up the same as the old fettec fc and its not working any idea why. Also when soldering the vista wires I only left off the rx wire for sbus I did not need it with the old v1 fc. Could that be it? I thought the sbus wire was if I was using the dji controller and im not im using crossfire. I have several other build with the old v1 fc and they all work fine. Any ideas ??
Hi JB you can use the uart3 jst connector for vista there's vcc... there is vcc, gnd, tx3 and rx3 and also a uart 1 on opposite side of the fc... why bother to solder keep the fc clean
I've been Jonesing for another soldering video, even though I solder perfectly; I still like watching videos with soldering all of the components together. I really like some of the options or differences the FETTEC G4 has to offer, but I'm still too comfortable with BetaFlight to try it just yet. I feel more comfortable with the sliders on BetaFlight, but I'm sure that I could get used to the FETTEC system. One of the things I do like is how you can change the output power without bridging. Great video!!!
@@JoshuaBardwell All devices are connected to battery, so any noise from a bec or fc or esc is seen by all devices. So what advantage is there to cascading becs, with each one generating it's own noise and heat? Keep in mind filters no matter how sophisticated are by no means perfect there will always be noise leakage. Good filtering costs money, add weight and takes up space and can be a point of failure...
My man, I am telling you facts based on a decade of experience building and flying drones. You can argue theoretically all you want. Your theoretical arguments do not match with the actual experience of people who actually build drones. Most of the time, running a vTX off a regulator gives cleaner video than running it off vBat. Yes, the vTX has a built in BEC. And like you suggest, it has relatively shitty filtering (most of the time). So putting it behind another BEC that has better filtering improves the situation. Even though the BEC's filtering is not perfect, it is way better than the, sometimes, 30 volts peak of noise that is introduced into the vBat rail by the switching of the ESC FETs. Stop arguing and open up your brain to new information that will make you smarter.
