My suggestion is to go to the nearest grocer, can save time and energy, most important thing is to buy in bulk and plan for a week or so ahead and buy the amount you need for the entire week so you don't have to waste time and shop multiple times
Most people don’t think like you though. This is why I see some grocer even selling good items and pricing strategy still because of 10cents people run the a further grocery store just to get one item 😅
Excellent video. But just a slight correction of the shelf display, in Malaysia manufacturers do NOT pay for shelf space. We negotiate the level of of where we want our products displayed based on actual market share. So if Maggi for sure it will be eye level and more space than it's competitors because that's what the market demands. What we pay for is listing fees (to be able to sell the product in the store) and secondary displays (like the island displays and the shelves at the end of an aisle which we call the gondola end). Hope you found this info useful 😁
So just a recap (feel free to correct me): Jaya Grocer - Not Mercato or Cold Storage level, but still premium. Nonetheless, closeness to urban areas makes it suitable for single urbanites, especially since you won't save much anyway due to the small purchase size and fuel costs. Aeon - Slightly cheaper (both price and quality), but still similar to Jaya, and from my experience, a lot of Japanese prepared food and imported products too. NSK - Almost like Giant, warehouse vibe with more affordable brands. Families are advised to come here as cheaper prices stack up more, especially with big families. If you want something with a bit more quality though, not recommended. Speedmart - Freshness-wise, slight lower than NSK, but in some cases can get cheaper (such as with toilet paper). But definitely closer to residential areas for those quick groceries.
Nsk has more local products but if u compare same brand from nsk with grocer then nsk is cheaper. If u wan more foreign products , grocer is the place. Foreign =/= better quality. A common fallacy
It depends on the things actually.I purchased a common things like kitchen tissue, cooking oil & soap at econsave.Fresh stuff like meat, fish or chicken at aeon or pasar tani & rare stuff like salmon fish, coffee bean, some inported sauce at village grocery.
I was hoping you would comment on the freshness of raw food, which was the chicken. In my only one experience going to NSK, the raw beef displayed in an open wet market style was on the verge of rotting with shades of brown instead of blood red. Suffice to say that was the first and last time I went there.
Awesome video! Now I don't feel so bad for shopping at Jaya grocer. I think it would be interesting to watch a part 2 that has more 'atas' grocers, Village Grocer, Ben's, Mercato, etc. and then compare those prices with this one.
why should you... the overall shopping experience was good.. From trolley, cleanliness also arrangement of items are all well planned. It definitely worth the price.
Jaya Grocer is always the best. The food can stay longer in the fridge and quality is also better. The 1kg of cheese is dam cheap. 40 Ringgit for 1 kg.
I think u mention about the 1 kg cheddar cheese made in Australia. Price was 30 rm but since grab purchase jaya price gets high super fast. First they increase 35 then 40 and latest price is almost 50rm. Jaya was favorite grocery but grab ruin it
for household things, I prefer nsk but for fresh and crunchy veggies jaya grocer is the best, difficult to get anywhere else, usually other places their vegetables are not crunchy and rubbery, hard to swallow
In my opinion, going to nearest available grocery should be best choice those who want save some time. In my area have Lotus's, Sunshine and slightly further from me have AEON inside Queensbay Mall and also Giant in Bayan Baru. If AEON inside Queensbay Mall, you need to pay for the parking while others doesn't need to pay for the parking. But for Sunshine, it is within my neighbourhood and just walk like 5 minutes can do some a bit of shopping. Some grocery store they have some membership like giving discounts, earn points and spend using points to give better value.
This reminds me so much about my mom who enjoys shopping grocery from NSK because she grew up in a village so the low price vegetables and fruits really attracted her.
Buy for one person...go to nearest grocery shop where you can buy in pieces..eg. 1 clove of garlic, 1 big union...where they can weight it in small quantity. For daily purchase for family..nearest supermarket or central market. For big family and buy weekly nearest. Prices may vary depend on times when supermarkets want to clear their stocks. So your findings cannot be very accurate.
I use to shop in Jaya grocer predominantly but the prices increases made me switch to Aeon. But after 2 weeks of going to NSK I will only get my fresh produce from NSK. For other stuff like coffee, detergent etc, usually speedmart or giant
Based on personal experience, price for me is Jaya Grocer > Aeon > 99 > NSK EDIT: The results is a little shocking, I didn't expect Jaya Grocer to not be that expensive
actually every super market they have their own power items to attract their own customers. That's why we sometimes found item A is cheaper but B and C is more expensive.
Great video! However, you have no idea, bro.. Things/groceries in East Malaysia are more expensive. However, the minimum wage is wayyy lower. Wonder why is there such a disparity. Sometimes simple items such as a can of tuna can have such a huge price difference between the West and the East.. aduii 😢
We don't process much food and cost to transport is insane. Another problem is our population is way too less makes it harder for us to start such business. The only option is to stay alert with each State GoV initiatives on business and take chances over it. More R&D in food security needed. For none business minded, the best is to take a relevant cert or degree at least and work in foreign company to improve the salary. Main industry in East Malaysia do pays well just need to take the right course.
You get what you paid for… -Speedmart always no stocks definitely is a no go. -Lotus has improved compared to Tesco. -Hero is a good budget version Jaya Grocer but has lesser brand options. -Aeon is a mixbag some branches are dirty like Giant and some are almost as good as Jaya Grocer.
Huh? Many B40 in my area go to Aeon. They say it is a lot cheaper than local independent stores. I personally go to Aeon for basic stuffs, and go to Jaya Grocer for fancy imported goods.
This is a very good video, I’ve always wonder which was the best place to buy groceries, Jaya Grocer are dangerous place cuz I always end up spending extra for snacks 😂
I prefer small to medium sized shops for gorceries. I find the produce always comes in fresh in the morning and no stock by closing time. And I am not tempted to buy stuff i dont need or higher end brands. I'm in and out quickly coz small place and parking is usually easier and time saving.
the 99speedmart that I usually visit restock their eggs at every Monday afternoon, and it will be sold out really quickly in 1-2 days. Maybe thats the reason why you guys dint manage to grab it in 99.
Also, for groceries, they are usually known as convenience goods, so people don't usually do research on their price point, BUT I would argue that certain convenience good like shampoo, conditioner, cleanser, body soap, we should do some research on them as most of them on the market contains sodium laureth sulfate which could be bad for people with sensitive skin or even too frequent use. I used to keep having dandruff without understanding why until I changed my shampoo to one that's ewg green

I love jaya because the place is clean n everything is of high quality n affordable. The only expensive items are brocolli n a few vegies imported from australia instead of china or from cameron. Nsk should just clean up the place because it is stressful to shop there.
Difficult to compare. same toilet paper would hav diff product range, hence the diff packaging. Chicken price differ per kg differ depending on which part of the chicken. Bigger store hav house brand so can save. Least 99 bread is the cheapest while other store wil sell according to the tag
