    I dated someone with a hollow heart. Wish you could feed him to your chickens. Well that was a beautiful watermelon, what a shame it disappointed you. I was torn on the seeds, so very thankful for your review.

    • @ChristasGarden

      The plant was put in the ground in early May, the first watermelon was harvested in early August, the second watermelon in late August. I believe the hollow heart was caused by improper pollination. It rained for a couple of days straight when the first flower was pollinated and the bees weren't out and about pollinating like they would have been otherwise.

    Good job.... my Halbert Honey finally ripened and was it ever good and their are plenty more coming along just fine.. I learned a lot this season bout plant watermelons ...they say 80-90 days which is true to a point but I've noticed it's 80-90 days if Pollinated when the female blooms come out with the male blooms ...I think this is why my plants are so late I planted in mid-April and I'm just starting to pick and I think more will be ready in about 3weeks and so on... glad you told me to let them run.

    Your watermelons are doing great! I never have much luck growing them. The hardest part is knowing when to pick them! The last one I grew, I picked too early :(.

    poor pollination is usually the cause of hollow heart so picking it earlier or later would probably not changed the out come. It looked so nice on the outside.

    Beautiful melon! You said it was 3 weeks since it was completely yellow... I'd try picking the other one right as it turn completely yellow. No matter, it was beautiful to see! I have major fungal disease problems where I live, do you have any suggestions as of varieties that are less susceptible?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  6 років тому +2

      I feel like Ali Baba is a good one for disease resistance. It still gets blight but always seems to be the last one to get it, at least in my garden. Give it a try, it is always one of the first to set fruit, which is also nice.

      Yeah I know, it looked ripe but I waited and waited for that tendril to dry up. The hollow heart was a pollination issue but the slight mush in the center was due to being overripe.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 роки тому +2

      I honestly think it wasn't properly pollinated due to heavy rain during flower pollination. There just weren't enough bees out and about. It may have been a little overripe as well but it wasn't too far gone. I wasn't going to grow this one again because the foliage seemed more susceptible to Alternaria leaf blight than other varieties but I am going to try again in a container anyway. The second watermelon that I harvested from this plant was really good.

    Very much enjoyed that! Nice looking melon, curious if it was harvested 1-2 weeks ago if the centre would be hollow?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  6 років тому +2

      I wondered the same thing...but I think it had hollow heart because it wasn't fully pollinated. From what I have been reading, a melon has hollow heart due to lack of pollination. When that watermelon was first pollinated it rained and rained for a couple of days. When I saw that it was actually going to grow, I was surprised. I remember having all kinds flowers on the vines but was frustrated with the rain because it was keeping the bees away. I have mild cases of hollow heart almost every year but this one was the worse. I wanted to pick it a couple of weeks ago but was waiting for that tendril to dry and it never happened. I do believe that it was overripe as well. It is definitely one of the prettiest watermelons I have ever grown, right up there with Moon and Stars. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! :)

    Can u save the seeds for next year's harvest?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 роки тому

      You can. If you are growing more than one variety, there is a very good chance of cross pollination so the watermelons will be different than their mother plant. If you are only growing one variety, it won't be an issue.
