Things You Didn't Know About The Crusades

- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- What happened during the Crusades? What were the Crusades? This time is one of the most misunderstood periods of Western history. From 1095 to 1291, successive waves of Christian knights and royals, called to action by the Catholic Church, quested to the Holy Land in an effort to capture (or re-capture) it from Muslim armies.
But facts about the Crusades are much more complicated than that. The Crusades weren't just one movement, but dozens, led by hundreds of knights, kings, and dukes, and not always bent on capturing Jerusalem. They tried to free Jerusalem, but also claimed a number of ancient cities, destroying priceless artifacts and culture.

I think my Dad fought in the Crusades. I asked my Dad about his years there, and he just glared at me. It's the only explanation.
Giggle giggle giggle and giggle some more 😋
😭😭😭
Maybe he thinks you’re being sarcastic and snarky bc he knows YOU fought in the crusades in a past life and he didn’t, and you’re just rubbing it in his face. Also an explanation.
So your father was islaphobic... And every Christian is nazist you know that. I just love modern times.
Wow hahaha
A lot of people complaining that “this wasn’t covered” or “that wasn’t covered”
The crusades were a multi century series of major military campaigns involving many of the kingdoms and religions at the time……. I’m not sure how you expected them to cover everything in 13 minutes.
I have seen that in other videos as well. This channel is usually there to give a lot of base information of what occured, that if one wishes they can follow up with further on their own. These aren't five hour documentatries.
multiple vids? make it into a mini series
@@JustDan718 This guy doesn't do that. Stephan Molyneux had a good Crusades series that was 4 or 5 hours long but he got cancelled by UA-cam. Wish I had downloaded the series before that.
I don't expect them to cover everything, but some topics are so integral to the crusades that they still should have been covered.
They were terrorists no different than Jihadists
I think a very important fact is that Pope Urban promised forgiveness and pardons for all of the past sins of those who would fight to reclaim the holy land from Muslims and free the eastern churches. This pardon would also apply to those that would fight the Muslims in Spain. That's why entire families and poor people joined not just because @1:51 "god wills it".
Fake deity rules?
😆
And... That's one of the reasons Martin Luther came forward some centuries later.
Only Jesus forgives sins..
@@ophelian4646 Who? 😂
@@Geopoliticstoday2 You know, Jesus, the man who walked on water.
@@ophelian4646 😆😆😆😆
DAMN, the amount of good jokes in this video is just impressive. The narrator definitely wants to set a new record here!
I have an ancestor who was a general under Walter The Penniless. They pillaged nearly every town they passed through, and only got half way to the Holy Land before turning back...
Which explains my habit of raiding every snack in the kitchen, and then being too full to actually bother making dinner.
😂😂
I tend to rummage through the kitchen late at night like a Raccoon or maybe a black ops crusader cheese puffs be damned.
Based
Lol!
Lol I think we must be related then, cos that sounds like 1 of my ancestors lol
I remember a number of years back. I watched a documentary about the Children's Crusade on the History Channel back when they used to show things like that on History Channel.
@Arthur Morgan Yes
@Arthur Morgan aliens are real 😂
@Arthur Morgan i mean with the endless universe kinda hard to say that we are the only living organisms out there. did they ever visit us prolly not cuz we’re all a bunch of momos. but they gotta be out there like 20 thousand light years away or some shit. btw fucks with ya pfp 😂
History channel now is dogshit. Nothing but reality tv crap
@Arthur Morgan you can't deny the possibility tho
You forgot the 500 years of jihad that led to crusades. Not that the crusades were dope, but they were a response, not an unprovoked aggression.
Cope
Mentioning that wouldn't be politically correct
Could be banned from UA-cam for spreading Islamophobia
@@نوافالجهني-غ1ن I think I'll correct instead, thanks tho.
@@paulshaju2806 Islam is evil.
How else were they supposed to level up enough to capture Jerusalem without doing any side missions?
“Men, we cannot enter the Holy Land. We need to be level 30.”
*An army’s worth of moaning*
Connecting events and concepts in history with pop culture idiocy. This. Channel. Is. Brilliant!!
Ye because presenting history through American pop culture is epitome of classy
I can't believe you completely skipped over the clusterf*** that was the 4th crusade.
You mentioned the split between the Western and Eastern Churches. That would be interesting
These videos are awesome for us knowledge and factoid lovers, even better for those of us history lovers out there. The commentary however puts the icing on the cake!
I’m astonished! I didn’t know that Keith Urban was a pope back in the day. That’s unreal!
Yea it's odd actually, people know about Popu Urban, but not many know about Pope Rural or Pope Suburban. The more you know
I am disappointed that you didn’t mention the time the crusaders sacked Byzantium. It really highlighted their desire for plunder was greater than their religious beliefs so they attacked Christians instead of the Muslims.
Too be fair it's kind of the byzantine king fault who lied about having money
It was actually the venetians as they were the ones who used the crusaders to do their dirty work
Gee, you learn something new everyday! Well, the more you know! Thanks, Weird History! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I don't know if this channel has touched on the Dark Ages or not but if not it'd be nice to see it on here.
Great stuff as always. Still waiting on the History of Lobster video I requested in your history of food. Will be keeping an eye out
“At least until furious X comes out and ups the ante…god wills it” had be burst out laughing
Thank you for this, your work is awesome!!
*Why do people always leave out the hundreds of years of Muslim invasions into Europe when talking about the crusades?* They pick up the story where it’s convenient
Why do they leave out that the whole middle east was christian territory? The crusades were to help the greeks and to RE-conquer that territory. But i guess the truth is not convenient anymore, just like your example.
They think every Christian in the world in 1095 were white dudes from Italy, England, France, and Germany.
I think we're not supposed to talk about such inconvenient facts as the centuries of M_____ invasions into Europe for fear of getting censored as "hate speech". 🙄
This video is a fucking pro muslim propaganda.
Thanks for sharing. Much appreciation for Weird History videos and the information you provide. History is important and fascinating to learn. Stay safe and blessed.
Do a what was life like during the down time of Revolutionary war era soldiers like British, Colonial, and Hessian and French troops
The Pope also was looking for a way to keep the Franks from killing each other as well
Also slavery. Muslims and Jews were trading slaves between the Muslim races. It’s where the word slavery comes from.
Back in middle school history I was told there was a Children’s Crusade. It didn’t succeed, but I’d like to know more about what happened.
Pretty much a a bunch of kids got sold into slavery
@@JohnnyWindmill I heard that was the outcome but I’d like to know how it started and progressed into that.

A video about the Home Children of England. My great grandfather was one of the few black children sent from London to Toronto. He was badly treated by local boys and ran away to the US
Would love to see a video about Quantrill’s Raiders.
They have to be better than McDaniels Raiders
Thank you so much for this!!!
I love this channel and all the work you all do! Keep it up! ❤
They did many crusades, some of which almost didn't fail. But at least the Italians got some sweet trade deals.
Could you guys do a segment about the knights templar?
Fantastic video keep it up your doing amazing job
Love how they don’t mention all the Muslim crusades beforehand and afterhand
Yes. Recapture is what happens when you take something back.
Yes. Tats why We say Saladdin recaptured Jerusalem from invading crusaders. Middle East was/is not European territory for them to claim. They were and will be always invaders, even if come in the guise of crusaders, colonists or invasion armies of allied forces

Anyone who wages holy war, Christian, Muslim, Jew and so is a serious head case.
Killing in the name of God has got to be the biggest oxymoron of all time.
Oh that movie was horrible. Waste of good actors.
Between 700-1100 half the Christian world was lost to Muslim military conquest. It was as much a strategic counter move as it was anything else.
@@bkmalone864 what r u trying to say because Christian history has been the most violent
First off, the Crusades were defensive wars designed to prevent the spread of Islam, which at the time looked to be a major threat to Christianity.
Second off, don't gaslight people from a time that you clearly don't understand to begin with. There are plenty of people around today who'll kill for political causes, some I'm sure you'd even support, the Crusades were no different
Muslims after invading Europe for 300 years: "How dare you invade us!"
can you do a video about the life of Baldwin IV the Leper King
Just watch the movie Kingdom of Heaven he’s in it.
Interesting topic! The Leper King decisively defeated the legendary Saladin in Montgisard

Make a video about the Knights Templar please
I love the coincidence that I’m watching this, outside window there’s a statue of the first crusader king of Jerusalem, godfried of bouillon on horseback

You should do the Muslim conquest it’s pretty interesting too.
Would love to hear more about the CHILDRENS Crusades that took place as well. Was not mentioned..
At 8:00 the music louder than the narration. Hard to understand in spots. Thanks for all your work and knowledge. Appreciate.
Do a video or two about the Reconquista in Spain and generally the history between Christianity and Islam on the Iberian peninsula!
Most of the crusaders were not "knights". As most people have a misconception of. Men paid off to serve for a wage.
I literally can’t get enough weird history😁
I love history videos. Great short info.
As someone from asia, i find the Crusades fascinating. Would love to participate in those reenactments they have.
Wtf?!
@@ahmedalsukaiti3446 Have i offended you, my friend? I have read stories of Saladin and find the era very intriguing.
@@Raez_XL No not at all, but that era was full of death
I know about Civil War reenactments, but I had no idea Crusade reenactments were even a thing! That's interesting...
The Crusades is a touchy issue for many Muslims. I wouldn't dare even thinking reenacting those wars
0:27 “but BIFFOH we get started!”… 😂
Do an episode about the second pacific squadron and the infamous Kamchatka
The crusades failed because of:
1. Hubris- Tactics were non-existent. A huge army left Jerusalem instead of utilizing siege warfare, crossed a desert in the middle of summer to fight a battle, and nearly died of thirst before they even got there. Few survived,
2. Infighting - Various nobles fought each other for glory. Richard the Lion Hearted insulted the Duke of Austria so much that the Duke took his huge army and returned home, causing the crusade to fail. The Duke got his revenge though!
3. Dwindling population of knights/Christians - Most warriors fought for treasure and glory. They hated the Middle East and had no interest in staying in such an inhospitable region. Most went home. There were only a few hundred knights left to defend Jerusalem when it fell to the Muslims
4. Lack of support from Europe - people just stopped caring.
What about "Peter the Hermit"? He was only mentioned briefly. I thought he was important in inspiring Christians to take up arms.
Saladin was a legendary commander
On my way to becoming bald, I have found myself a new hero. Bernard of Clairvaux. What a man! He definitely knew how to rock baldness. May he rest in peace.
How about a video on the destruction of the Knight's Templar.
Thank you for not belittling my intelligence and memory and correctly identifying Palestine as such. Your information is more trustworthy to me for this.

1071 and 1041 are not in the 10th century. That's the 11th century. 10th century is between 901-1000. If you have a UA-cam channel trying to teach history and information you should do a better job getting your facts straight. This is a regular occurrence on almost every video.
Yeah I've noticed plenty of errors, I watch these strictly for entertainment not knowledge.
@Mehmed Islyamov Same reason why we live in the 21st-century when it’s 2022. 20th century is the 1900s. Google
The Christian West has always been at 'war' with Islam in one way or another. It's morre than just religious views...it's also cultural. BTW The Siege of Malta in 1565 should make an interesting video....it should make a great movie as well.
East Romans were always at war with Muslims in reality , but Westerners decided they want to be at war with Muslims and actively looked for it
@@mogh2603
And of course, in Spain they were at war for 700 years.
@@henryperez606 there is no such thing as " Christian West" as political entity unified in the face others, volumes are written to document wars among constituents of this "Christian West" body .In Iberia there were a number of Islamic and Christian states, at war among and against each other, sometimes Muslim states made alliances with one Christian state against another Christians state , and sometimes also against other Muslim states. This is standard Real Politik, nothing special, no holy wars.
@@henryperez606 in the context of Crusades you can't say Western states were not actively seeking war, their campaigns were wars of aggression, no Muslim ever attacked Britain, Venice, or the German states, all those by their own choice decided to build armies that traveled thousands of miles to attack Islamic Levant & Egypt.
Please make video about the rise of the Normanns
What about the allegation that Christian pilgrims en route to Jerusalem had been attacked for many years by robbers and slave traders from the Turkish/Saracen (I____ic) realm? I thought that making those routes safe for Christians to travel was a major motivation for the Crusades. (Can't safely spell out the "I-word" for fear I'll get censored.)

I was thinking the other day about how is it that we know about midievel music? All movies having to do with crusades or just the midevil era, have some sort of music with a flute or oboe playing? I would like to know about the history of music in general, the development perhaps of certain iconic instruments and just how its evolved? Can we condense that into a video?? THANKS!
I found this informative. I think fighting for religious reasons is irony. Could you do a video on the great flood of 1937 around the midwestern states along the Ohio river like Indiana and Kentucky?
You should cover the Cristero War. It was when Mexico attempted to secularize itself, since the Catholic Church had major control in the Mexican government. My great grandfather was a Cristero, being hung in the town well by the Mexican soldiers for burning down the town school after they expelled the priest and nuns.

I guess the biggest irony of Christians warpathing down the road to Damascus was how none of them found the irony...
It just upsets me even though you can't cover much in 13 minutes the thing is is that all of these lands being reconquered were taken from Christians initially. Saying that it wasn't good for everyone else in a negative way is kind of false people were free to practice there Islamic religion in their cities. But it was not the same the other way around Christian women were forced into marriages the sons were either slaughtered or forced into the army. They literally tried to wipe Christianity off the face of the Earth. The Christians it was very reactionary there is nothing negative about it.
