  • Does my new engine still make 1000 Horsepower as my ONE K HP License Plates would suggest? In this video I finish up the tune on my 2001 Turbo Trans Am WS6. I normally tune this car at the drag strip but going to the dyno is fun so here we are. Enjoy!

    Keep the plate....Who's gonna tell you your not making 1K horsepower? Even if they do say your not.... ask them to run whatever they have. If they say they're making more then 1K and you beat them. Well, then you know they're just talking....love the video's man!👍🏻

    As I'm sure you hear on a regular basis, I just wanted to say this car is badass! I have a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO and plan on doing some relatively basic modifications (tune, thermostat, plugs, downpipes, etc), but your WS6 is in an entirely different world! Rock on, brother.

    I built a C5 with an LQ9 stroked to 403 and a D1SC instead of a turbo , tons of methanol. Made 856rwhp , 20* of timing , 18psi (head unit maxed out) , and 12.5 afr. It made like 801 at 11 afr and I kept leaning it out a little , watch for KR in the tune , check plugs , repeat. Eventually got to 12.5 afr without knock but was scared to go any leaner. Something about all the methanol allowed for a leaner afr than expected.

    I think the plate is safe! I checked a few things and came up with this:
    3900lb at 141MPH trap speed = 853Wheel HP - Spot on your Dyno run.
    853HP at wheels / Rear Drive / Auto Trans = 1003HP at the Crank!
    Nice Job...!!!!

    Great videos. I’ve watched many on these Fbodies and yours is the only one I’ve sub’d to. Even better that your local. I’m 5 miles from 66.
    Currently building an iron 5.3 into a cheap LS1 for my 94 Formula T56 project car (didn’t want to deal with emissions). Do you like the 88mm turbo? I’ve been looking at turbo maps and it’s really involved to figure out which one I want. Also who’s cam did you go with? I see your putting together a build video, hopefully that will cover some of my questions I have. Where do you run 9’s without a cage? 41? Keep up the great work, and the videos coming. Sucks that it’s time to put it to bed for the winter.

    • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  6 років тому

      Thanks! I love the turbo on this car. Don't go too crazy looking at maps and going nuts. There are so many proven combos out there its insane. Get yourself a nice borg warner turbo. Not sure what you can fit but get a hold of Dr.Turbo and he can match something up for you. My turbo is basically a copy of a PT88, which is another good route. My cam is a custom grind spec'd out by Martin Smallwood. Google his name and you can follow and message him on FB. You are going to want to go with a custom cam tailored to your setup. I run 9's with no cage at Byron Dragaway, although I haven't been there this year. I have heard they are becoming more strict but honestly I don't think Ill run the car again with no cage.

    What effect does all that methanol have on target AFR? Lambda ~0.75 seems crazy rich to me. I've never tuned with methanol before, but we tended to find peak power from 0.85-0.92. Anything down into the .7's was like coughing out black smoke levels of rich.

    • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  6 років тому

      You do tend to go a little more rich with methanol. I target about .78 which is low 11s afr so not that crazy rich. Were tuning naturally aspirated cars in teh .85.92 range? Boosted cars are a lot different

    Loving the channel. Keep the plates and the tune exactly where it is. Killer street car. Looks like it drives great and it’s not stupid geared so it’s not stupid rpm on the highway and a fairly quiet cabin. Keep it safe where it’s at and enjoy the car. 90% of the guys that are gonna tell you to turn the wick up haven’t been through the struggles of taking a car too far and wind up falling out of love with it. Btw, what trans controller are you using with the 4l60?

      Thanks David, yea Im really happy with the setup. Perfect street car. Im running a larger B&M cooler. I don't remember which one but its one of the largest. • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  6 років тому

      Thanks so much for the kind words. Honestly, I don't tune professionally. It's just a hobby for my own cars so I wouldn't feel comfortable putting out an instructional video on something so crucial. This car was a 6 speed manual when I bought it 15 years ago. About 7 years ago I converted it to an automatic for drag racing purposes.
      I love driving manual and will get a manual car once again.

    he's not "guessing" power. He's just familiar with the formula trap speed = 234*(BHP/weight)^1/3 (that's a cube root). It works every time. You've said it weighs 3900 lb (you don't say if that's with you in it). 1000 bhp should let you run 148.66 mph. the best ET would be 9.17 seconds (1363/mph).

    Calculating Crank HP based on wheel is more guesstimate than actual calculation. But given the consensus of 15-20% driveline loss, you're probably pretty close to 1K crank. But not quite. 20% on 831WHP gives 997 crank. 15% gives 955.
    Personally, I'd lose the plates if for no other reason than that I prefer to understate rather than over. I'll generally only admit (initially) to 600WHP on my '99 Corvette. I've also been known to try to pass it off as being stock, except for bolt ons...

    • @OffRoadRN
      @OffRoadRN 6 років тому

      You bet. If I can get away with claiming it's just an exhaust, I will.
      Here's my rationale... The LS3 just bolted in where the LS1 used to be. The cam? Slips right in. Heads? Bolted right on. Blower? It's held on with bolts too...
      See? Just bolt ons...

      I weighed it with me in it and with a quarter tank of gas and it was 3850. Then I added a meth kit, an air tank and pump in the rear to control the waste gate so I figured I added about 50 pounds or so. Its probably 3880-3890ish. The 9 inch and the turbo kit add some weight for sure.

    Nice! I have an 04 GTO making 741HP that has burnt and broken 8 4L60’s! The last 2 were guaranteed for 1000hp! Over $14k in transmissions! Finally went with a rather stock $1200 4L80 that has 2 trouble free summers! 1st gear ratio has killed my 60’s from 1.51’s to 1.8’sb as one of the penalties that’s more than made up for with reliability.
    How in the world have you gotten a 60 to survive?

      Oh and 23 degrees without meth with zero knock. 28 total with 14gph two step. 18 degrees initial from my stock bore and stroke LS6 from an 02 Vette.
      I sold my 14,000 mile 02 black on black WS6 for this GTO 8 years ago without regret.

    I have a 99 firebird stock everything 160k plus miles. My question is why my firebird won't do a burnout. Does it not have enough hp. Or is it just not made to do one. I can spin my tires for a second but then the traction control comes on.

    The plates not going to bust your stealth mode so keep it.
    What do you think about the twin turbo 65 series Mercedes? Are they tunable like your Firebird?

    • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  6 років тому

      You can for sure get them tuned. It costs a lot more but man those things move with a simple tune.

    Just got a rebuild and a cam swap for my 99 WS6 went with Texas Speed High Lift hot cam every thing else is stock curious as to how much HP I will gain with a tune.

    • @LegitStreetCars
      @LegitStreetCars  6 років тому

      In your case you really just need a tune for it to run properly. I wouldn't beat on a car with an aftermarket cam and no tune. Did you do fuel injectors as well?
      Thanks for watching

    On the plate - LOL why have a sleeper car which you’ve done a killer job of building - and then a billboard on the tags. Also we all know RWHP not crank tells the truth, did it pull 1024 RWHP ........ let’s go back to the dyno with some timing and boost :)
