Alex going from Mercs and BMW to Tesla, great to see his reaction to the welds on early Tesla models. Finally, this will give us an honest opinion of how they are built and maintained.
@Kris Nicholson Yeah, both the Lambos were on hoists and my mate who owned the garage said "come look at this" and showed me the shitty welds - no doubt it was hand welded very poorly by some Italian factory worker who was just hanging out for his next break. We were comparing them with the presumably robot generated near perfect welds on the subframes of my Lexus. One was an early model Gallardo, the other a Diablo, not sure how old but pretty old - so both from before Audi took over proper. Good advice - I think I lack a steady hand and lots of practice. My dad was a gun welder and tried to teach me but I just don't have the knack.
8:20 is not an error. It's a common warning if you are supercharging in 100+ degree weather the car has to choose to either keep the interior cool or cool the batteries (They share the same freon lines). I'm assuming it's just glitching because you're playing with the A/C and should go away once A/C is fixed.
you don't bake out the moisture, you're pulling it deep into a vacuum thus lowering the boiling point of the moisture significantly. Decay test will show if you have any leaks or not. With a system that small you could have gotten away with half hour to 45 minutes of vacuum. Also flipping the can upside down and putting in warm water helps it go a lot smoother too.
we don't need no stinkin decay test. this is diy driveway stuff not no play it safe mambi pambi stuff and big deal 15 minutes more is not a problem because he's not getting shop rate
Paint match is right it's just that spraying a metallic silver is hard and getting the right shade is even harder! My car is silver but on my log book it says yellow!. I found out that you can't just spray a part and expect it to match as the variation of the different colour weight can be over or under by a few grams! If you want a colour match it's a full respiratory!
The 21 inch wheels with super low-pro tires are wanted because they look cool and handling on smooth pavement is crisper. But they are also very vulnerable to surprise encounters with potholes and in many cases you will lose not only the tires involved but also the wheels... and that gets EXPENSIVE.
I might have used a few rivet nuts to hold the hood latch actuators in place (assuming mounting on metal). If I ever get round to buying a Tesla the welding is the first thing I will check. That work is absolutely terrible and looks like it was welded in a back street garage in Nigeria.

In regards to your roof repair, why not get one of the fellows that come to your house to do the repairs? They are not expensive and they do a good job, they might even repaint a matching colour on your bumpers? Love the video, All the best, Edgar
Paint job on bumpers is too light vs. body color. Horizontal paint line match up are much easier to see than horizontal match ups - for what it's worth. Nice work though!
How much did you get it for? And yea considering he did a great job on the painted bumpers. Not being able to match colors is a humongous problem it seems everyone has. It was close enough for an at-home job.
Honestly, don't bother fixing the roof. If you're going to be wrapping it anyways, just smooth the dent out with bondo/filler, and wrap over that. You won't be able to see it and will save a ton of money and keep the structure of the car original. I do this to all the damage on my cars before having them wrapped and it works perfectly fine.
My brother is a damn good welder, his welds are some of the best I've ever seen, comparing tesla's to his is like comparing shit to gold. For the amount of money they cost, the welds should look like professionals did it, it's fucking disgusting.

Those ugly welds will probably be fine, spatter is trivial if you can't see it and most welded cars have a lot of it and sub-optimal very fast welds, they rarely fail. I think nothing of the spatter near frame welds on my old Chey truck, your pics show something hard to figure but it LOOKS like the main joint is sound. The bigger wheels are ok but they have their downside. Engineering explained took off his 21’s because he hit a pothole and punctured 2 tyres, it cost a lot to replace and so he put 19s on to avoid it happening again.
Dual front hook actuator is for security, same reason for it to be difficult to access. It is much more difficult to bypass. Please give them credit to Tesla to make it hard to steal. Unlike some J manufacturer, they do not care about security.
Yes if you dont sell your gasoline/diesels cars, a little girl with dead eyes will come to your door and tell you that you are bad cause she sailed with a boat to north america instead of flying alone with her family she rather made alot of yacht ppl fly around so they could pilot the sailboat for her. So instead of 3-4 ppl using a plane she got 2 crews fly aswell as 6 other plane riders that was crew to usa
You must live in a real cool area as having all those cars would usually give most people problems as the rules and regulation man would come down on you Sir. Nice welds. Sometimes the automatic welders do a pre heat cycle and then start welding again.
Did Sam personally mix the paint? No. Everyone's ragging on Sam for the mismatch but all he did was spray it, not mix it. He did a pretty good job IMO, considering he's not a pro and he did it in a backyard/garage. It's a salvage Tesla with a lot of unknowns at this point. Doesn't make sense to spend thousands on a proper paint job for the bumpers, especially since he's wrapping it.
I was overtaken today by a Porsche 911 going like stink with a howling sound track. A little further on I was overtaken by a Tesla. Suddenly that Porsche looked so Last Century.
So if you buy a wrecked Tesla and repair it, is the warranty totally out the window as well? ie the 8 year battery warranty is no longer valid? Just wondering.
I want a Tesla so bad...It would be a HUGE upgrade from my 2000 Chevy Lumina (I paid $200 for it, I’m like the 2nd or 3rd owner and the previous owner hit like 3 deer, so the hood is all smashed) My current car, the Lumina is a good car, but it isn’t that efficient due to either spark plugs or some filters needing changed. It’s the base model so it’s got little to no features. The only extra feature it’s got is the Cruise control which I didn’t even know it had until tonight 😂 My friends dad knows a lot about a car and said it had cruise control, but I’ve been told it didn’t have it until I tried what he told me to... My next vehicle will either be a $1000 mustang (if it’s more efficient with less problems and dents) or a Tesla...whichever comes first 😂 I don’t generally want a ford, but the best type of ford is a Mustang imo. I don’t want a Buick or Toyota, or dodge because they’ve got way more problems and they’d be a downgrade from my current car 😂 If I were to get a Tesla, or a better car, I would literally cry in happiness/joy as it would be a huge upgrade.
Isn't it one of the first production years? That would certainly explain the poor quality. I just hope they got better by now, although I've read some reports or Model 3's rusting in a weird spot right by the driver door.

I've seen multi tone paints on many cars, and the paint match matches weld quality. Tesla owners normally wouldn't work on their cars so build quality really doesn't matter to them.
I think because the rear bumper was facing direct sun light, i assume if alex parked the car the other way around the front bumper will look as faded as the rear one, i donno just assuming based on the video.
I had a Palermo Gray Mitsubishi Starion that I had to do some paint work on....Palermo Gray is like a sand color. I noticed that when I opened the paint can, the paint was straight up silver. The more reducer I added, the more it brought the color into line....and it didn't take but the tiniest bit to change the color a shade. My guess would be that you were off just the slightest amount on the reducer....it seems to make a real difference on silvers and golds. I also learned on that car, that doing a final real dry coat of paint before the clear helped the metallic lay better and produce a better final result.

Yup, looks much like what I'd do at home - coco-pop welds I call them. Funny enough I've seen Lambos with similar quality welding though.

I think C-3PO welded it together, R2-D-2 lays a more consistent bead, like a roll of dimes out of the wrapper.

Work on a lot of Tesla’s and I can say the bumper is close the how the factory delivers bumpers on brand new Tesla’s, especially Model 3s.

He has a modified 1st gen Nissan Leaf charger for 24o volts. So about 22 mph charging

Get a professional to knock out the damage then wrap it gloss black. Body would look good in brushed titanium. Just keep the lines parallel.
