I honestly hate how Mattel Creations works with these exclusives. I had Wun-dar in my cart and it sold out while I was waiting for the site to let me check out. That would be like finding a figure at Target and an employee taking it from me and handing it to someone else while I was in line!

I think Wundar is a perfectly cromulent name, its paying tribute to the fandom but it's also giving the character his own identity beyond the Prince Adam incarnation of He Man. Too bad I'm going to miss out on getting him AGAIN when he goes up on MC tomorrow

I had mine taken out of my cart that fateful day after much debate to even bother trying to get one.
I missed out on the TRI-KLOPS fan choice but that's because I opted for the GRAYSKULL set instead.
That said, I kind of want them both now and if had enough spare change lying about, I'd get one of each.
Great stuff, as always, Mr. Dan.

I'll also say while I agree about the black Zodac armour, I also think he looks drastically better in it

It's funny that this new version was as hard to get as the original. They really need to make this right with fans. There's no reason why anyone who wants one shouldn't be able to get it. That's throwing away a huge money making opportunity. I was hoping to get two of them because I want to make a "Savage Randy" using one of my Macho Man heads that I have on the Wun-Dar body. It's such a simple but fun custom.

They don't have to make anything right they know as much as people can whine they will always comeback. Also it's called an exclusive for a reason, you are not entitled to getting this figure same goes for me, it's just luck of the draw & that's not always a bad thing. As a collector sometimes u will come across situations where u will have to bite the bullet and pay more that's just life its called paying your dues. & sometimes u get lucky and u get it for retail. They had 2 drops for duplicat and we still had people complaining when they couldn't get it, so I forked out nearly 250 US and moved on with my life. If you lose sleep over a figure then just bite the bullet and fork out the doe.

I feel like Mattel slighted me and several other fans on this one, making it a bitter spot. I had mine in the cart when the first round sold out, then learned moments too late about the second round. Great if you have a bot doing your online shopping for you so you can ultimately flip them, but those of us trying to complete the line of previous He-Men will not be able to without being forced to make a custom one. Really nice, well-rounded review, Dan, and I agree with you on the pros and cons on this one. Whilst I totally get the novel "mystery" appeal over Wun-Dar, I confess I've been amazed just how much of a big deal the Origins version of this character seems to have been in the fan community. If it had been based on one of the very early He-Man designs (Vykron, etc.) I could totally understand the hype (and likely be in on it myself) ... In fact I have wondered if more casual fans have misunderstood this "savage He-man" to represent one of those prototype He-Man versions?
I share your feelings in how this release (and the Classics version) kinda "misrepresent" what the original was, from the name to the 'wrong' amour and everything else. And for me personally, where the early "savage" mythos have always been my main MOTU interest and this figure has often understandably been called "Savage He-Man", I feel kinda awkward how Wun-Dar is kinda being sold as that 'original', savage He-Man, when he wasn't really that either (the new accompanying mini-comic even sort of implies this ... But nope, not really he wasn't).
I know there's been a huge issue with orders on this figure... as an international (U.K.) collector I've sadly long since become resigned to having to get such wanted items through other channels anyway, but it does seem slightly convenient for Mattel to "accidentally" generate such demand (and hype!) for what has always been such a mysterious character in the first place ....hmmmm. I do actually kinda like 'Wun-Dar' in his own way, I might pick him up eventually if I see him at a fair price on the collector's market, though it might be nice to see a standard retail version of him at some point - maybe with a different selection of weapons to differentiate the release?
BTW whilst clearly different, those cool Skeletor Warriors do bear similarities with the Skelcons (from the Ladybird books, bought into mainstream canon in Classics)... wonder if there's some planned 'connection' between them?

Solid figure but easy to pass on. Not because of a bad sculpt, the name, or "inaccuracies". The "exclusivity" is from the low-run alone. Which is why a retail release wouldn't make sense at this point. Would have made sense to start, but the Mattel Creations version was kept as basic as possible. The figure not being readily available was not an error, it was an approach.

I for one love the history.
    Thanks for that.
Now I'm going to jump on my soapbox.
I think it's blatantly obvious to anyone who recognizes Arnold Schwarzenegger who this really was meant to be.
Of course you can't make toys out of a rated r movie unless you count aliens.
The Conan the barbarian movies were extremely popular.
And Mattel had an agreement with the creators of Conan the barbarian to manufacture toys after the likenesses of the movie.
I personally want to believe that they did make those toys..
But as I previously stated you cannot make toys in the '80s based on rated r movies.
So Mattel painted is here yellow called him a viking barbarian and proceeded to produce the toys.
I'm not here to cause a controversy.
I love everything that comes from Masters of the Universe minus anything that has to do with the master verse and Kevin Smith.
To me that was an absolute mistake.
I think they had produced a lot of the brown headed version of this action figure.
You can't exactly sell something that you're going to be sued over but you can give it away.
Just a little toy history for everyone.
I am a huge collector of Masters of the Universe and Masters of the Universe memorabilia since the 1980s.
I am a fan of epic proportions.
I just like to say I did not add this in order to cause any controversy but this too is part of the Masters of the Universe legacy.
And I do believe the brown-headed version of He-Man to be Conan the barbarian.
I also had this conversation with Mark Taylor and his wife Mark told me that He-Man was an amalgamation of a lot of different ideas coming from multiple sources I loved Mark Taylor and his wife is absolutely awesome.
But the evidence is there for the world to see.
And I will say Mark Taylor absolutely created Skeletor.
Because when he was a kid he actually seen a real dead person at an amusement park as a child.
Skeletor was 100,000% Mark Taylor through and through.
He-Man on the other hand was produced originally to be The Savage Conan.
Even me go made a Savage Conan in the 1970s.

I've never heard it properly confirmed; but over the years it has seemed to me that the exact contents with each figure did vary a little over time so I can well believe this (though, of course, the Weapons Pak armour did likely add to the confusion).
I've also heard it plausibly claimed that Faker was originally planned for this mail-away exclusive (a simple mish-mash of He-Man/Skeletor parts on the standard He-Man body) but ended up filling a slot in the second wave instead, at which point "Savage He-Man" (also a mish-mash of parts again with the basic He-Man body) was created instead.

He didn't come with any armor. Just a bag of the maroon weapons. The black zodac armor and gun came from the MotU weapons accessories pack that was sold at the time, and people simply gave these items to him. Over time, it became his look.

I still don't understand this being a limited figure and a preorder. This was going to sell well. They knew it would. Why wouldn't they just make it available for retail or how about this, take orders for everyone that paid for one? Crazy idea that maybe you actually sell one to everyone that has the money and wants one. But again, the resellers get plenty of stock to overprice and sell. And those of us who want to collect get screwed.

I have to say that I have b even ba huhe Pixel Dan fan for years. I completely respect his love for the line, and how he seems to be so genuine. But Dan, let's be honest here. You ha e the research you did for the book. Yet even in the video where you bought your wonderbread heman, you talked about how they were all so diffrent. They put what they had in, so the weapons were not the same for everyone, as far as we know. The wonderbread name, and mythos is the only reason people care about this figure, so why hate on the past?

I don’t think there is anything wrong with still calling it the Wonder Bread He-Man. We have only known it’s true origins for the last couple years and the Wonder Bread legend will always be a part of it. I have an authentic, original Savage He-Man and still call it Wonder Bread He-Man from time to time when I discuss it with other collectors.

The most annoying thing about this being an extremely limited release is that it would've been impossible to get two if you were even able to get *one*. So that means if you wanted to play with it, you would destroy the unique packaging.

I'm keeping the outer box and the package.

Hm, I thought Oolar was the "savage" He-Man. I really wanted this figure, but didn't get any notice that it was available until after it was sold out. Very disappointing. I do hope they do a retail release of him and maybe give him the original weapons he came with instead of the reused ones. I mean it's a quick and easy recolor to make for them and they would fly off shelves, if they ever got the chance to hit shelves in the first place.

I totally understand the complaints about coming with the black armor from the battle pack but to me part this whole characters deal is the many many years of trying to figure out the whole story behind its release and that armor kind of became synonymous with the legend. So to me, while it's not accurate to the original the armor is still part of the legacy of Savage He-Man just for that alone.

...& it is not an Origins concept. Classics Wun-Dar was a homage to the 80s Mail-In along with the lore that surrounded it. This is essentially the Origins take on the Classics figure. Just happens to look more like the vintage because of the head sculpt & it's in 5.5.

I absolutely HATE HATE HATE that they're sticking with the Sharella is the Green Goddess crap! They were originally supposed to be, and SHOULD be, two completely different characters! You can thank Toyguru for this. When they released Green Goddess in the Classics line she was going to be named K'yrula but for some reason Scott insisted on using the name Sharella from the unreleased Powers Of Grayskull character. Only after lots of fans, including me, complained about it did he add the bit about her transformation into the Classics storyline but never explained why these two characters were combined into one despite repeated questioning from the fans. And now they're still using this dumb idea and we STILL have never gotten a proper Sharella figure!
As for the Wun-Dar figure, I managed to order one but it hasn't shown up yet. I got a shipping notice but the tracking number isn't working; it just keeps giving me an error message.

    • @pjgathergood6987

Yeah, that whole Sharella thing is annoying me too - even more so that they now seem to using Wun-Dar to represent the early mini-comics savage He-Man (or "Barbarian" He-Man, to differentiate from Wun-Dar's tagline) instead. Needlessly mashing different characters together.
