Miata Gauge Cluster Removal, Repair and Calibration Tutorial

- This video goes into detail on how to remove the gauge cluster from a Miata NB, make minor repairs like replacing burnt lightbulbs, and how to calibrate all the gauges. I replaced the gauges on my Miata because it is a Canadian model which reads in km/hour. I replaced it with an OEM US gauge cluster from a donor Miata and needed to calibrate all the gauges. This is how I did it!

This is a great video but the background music makes me feel like some diabolical monster is going to come out and eat you.
Agreed. You should pause the music while you're talking.
And it goes on ALL THE FUCKING VIDEO
@@edoardomigliavacca9343 yeah you better like the music because it dont stop
I can't watch this video because of the background music
Good vid but...
Lose the doom march music
Thanks for a very useful video. It gave me the confidence to upgrade my gauge faces. It's so good that I watched it twice.
Just found this tutorial yesterday. I had to replace 2 dash lights. I used LED's and worked like a charm! Thanks!
dash cover over gauges broke, got a new one, and this video was perfect in explaining how to put the new one in. Thanks.
Great great great video please mute 🤫 music
You can also desolder the odometer PROM from the original dash, and solder it into the donor dash. I did it on my 99 Accord, and it worked a treat.
this music is killing it bro.
Really helpful video, thank you. (Although the tune did raise my anxiety levels a bit :-D )
Yeah man it's definitely a helpful video. I need to remove the plastic lens on my '00 NB1 to clean off some sort of residue on the inside. But like others said, the music really gets in the way. Try having the music during shots just showing you working, time lapses etc. but then pause the music track when you're actually talking.
Great video. Crappy music 🤣
Thank you for doing this for us Bro 👊🏼😊
Thanks for this!
Not sure if I'm over simplifying this but would it not be easier to set the gauges when the engine is cold (apart from the speedo) as all you'll need to do is set everything at Low or zero, Can't remember if the fuel gauge reads with the ignition off but just remember where it was before you strip down the gauges.
To much drama with the music I will use a torch
What if your speed gets more and more off? I calibrated it for 60mph but the lower my speed it's way far off? Like it says 20 but I'm going 28. I'm wondering if I need a different speed sensor.
i have an NA, and the tach went all the way around. Do you think id be able to get it back by just taking out the cluster without removing the cables and just spinning it around letting gravity do the work?
Thank you so much! I think someone may have done this before me, my speedometer is over by 5mph
Interesting...I have a 2001 MX-5, and the speedometer has always been about 4mph off.. I've driven by numerous street signs that tell you your speed, used GPS apps, and even paced other vehicles, and for certain, my speedo is off by about 4mph. I've even confirmed this with my OBD2 reader and iPhone app. So it appears I need to take apart my dash and cluster gauge, to pop the needle off and reset it.. Thank you for uploading this video!!!!
Any luck? Mine is off by 5, i learned to just live with it but if its an easy fix i might go ahead and fix it
@@tonysinigur Yeah, I opened up the dash cluster, found an open road, turned on a GPS app on my phone for speed, pulled the dial off and while driving at like exactly 30, put the dial back on. It was a tad sketchy but it worked
Trying to repair my NB and I need to learn how to remove and replace subframe, learn to replace starter and alternator. I don't see many, also I want to learn to remanufacture an alternator
It is easier just to remove the the odometer from you original cluster and install it in the donor cluster. It has two screws on the back that gets removed. The traces are designed to fold away and the odometer just slides out the backside. I have a video on my channel showing
Donald Newman , although that might be an easier route, you might run into some problems with mileage tampering or mileage discrepancy, which is what I was trying to avoid. It could affect the status of your title and subsequently affect the value of your car if you try to sell it. It may or may not come into question but I just wanted to be sure. I preserved as much of the original electrical components of the cluster as I could to prevent any question.
Can I buy your other cluster bezel trim..the one without the chrome bezels? I want it.
Hi Josaboy... I have the opportunity to change my cluster gauges as well... but like you do not want to mess up my odometer... did you say you just took the face components off your original and replaced them with the new one? (i.e. maintain your own housing unit?). Sure appreciate your input! Thank you!
Great video. For some reason my Tach stopped working and I'm thinking I may need to remove the cluster and check for a loose connection. The RPMs do read okay on my ODBC scanner so I figure the sending unit must be okay. Any ideas on what might cause the cluster Tach to stop having a reading? All the other gauges are fine. I checked the fuses near the ODBC connection and found none were blown. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and thanks again for the fine, clearly presented video !
Hey did you find the problem, it happen yesterday too me
I think u have to use a different ob2 reader it connects to something in the engine bay
Very useful video! As a side comment on production techniques, in my opinion the background music really doesn't help the video and actually could be a distraction to some of us.
the km are saved in the odometer with display or in an eeprom?
Is the process the same for a 2000 Miata base model? Just my tach isn't working but all else works fine.
My tach doesn't work either...
Nice music.
I replaced the gauge cards from white to black but when installed, the oil temp and coolant gauge over read, they were both reading really really high, I was careful with the install so is this a big problem, or do I just need to pop off the two when it's idling and put them where they need to be????
If you are certain your oil pressure and water temp was normal before replacing the gauges, I would just remove the needles and place it to the point where it should be reading when car is up to normal running temperatures. That's what I did and there was no problem. Good luck!
josaboy I ended up trying that, and as of right now it seems to be working.
josaboy I was also shocked at how easy the process for that switch was. I figured it was gonna be a lot harder.
+brady lanham great!! I'm sure you'll be okay!!
You could have just done a straight swap between the 2. The odometer reading comes from the ECU not from the odometer in the the cluster. You should've switched out the bulbs with LEDs while you were back there. I just swapped out mine and the LEDS were $1 each and looks much better.
If oil gauge was not a dummy gauge the needle would jump around as RPM's change. The NA has a real gauge, NB is a dummy gauge.
It’s oil pressure not temperature and it’s a 7psi switch, the Mk1 had a legit gauge but it confused customers so they gave the Mk2 a fake gauge
Why the creepy Halloween music?
I find it super annoying that Mazda put 9 hash marks between each tach number, so each mark is 100 RPM, but on the speedo there's only THREE marks between each 10 MPH mark. So each mark is 2.5 MPH. How the hell does that make any sense???
Do you still have the Canadian gauge dials? If so, would you be willing to sell them?
Actually I still have it. If you’re still interested, DM me on my IG instagram.com/me_yata_nb?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
@@josaboy I've reached out to you on IG.
God that music is horrendous, have to go search for another video, sorry.
Dummy gauge all day on the nb
terrible terrible music bro, wtf. did you watch your own video???
