  • Technical fault during the broadcast of an episode of Minder, which nearly gave me a heart attack when I first saw it as I thought my VCR was dying. If anyone can give an explanation of exactly what went wrong, or can help pinpoint the air date, please leave a comment.
[EDIT: as per ‪@bilkyasko‬ in the comments and the good people at the Pres Café forum, this episode is High Drains Pilferer (S4E3), originally broadcast on Wednesday, 25th January, 1984. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that this is when this recording comes from, but if it's a repeat, the latest it can come from is 1987 - maybe Thursday, 9th October, 1986, according to ‪@Embracing01‬ below. Apparently the fault is "a Cintel twin lens telecine going into stop mode". Thanks to all involved for that!]
Many thanks to ‪@David315842‬ for sending me this tape.
(If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, I haven't monetised the video, so you're welcome to do so, and that way everybody wins.)

Which I think was once used in Prisoner: Cell Block H at least the start of it sounded familiar. Though that wouldn't be any surprise if it did as that show along with ITV programmes and stations tended to use the same libraries of stock music. :)

Definitely looks like a telecine fault (I've seen a 1970s Newsround report where something similar happens). They'd still have been playing film straight from that at this point in time (rather than transferring them to video first as they would have done later).

I'll be honest, I thought the majority of programmes would have been played out from VT by this point, but evidently not.

@@VideotapeFTW I think some stuff may have still went out directly from film into the early 90s from some broadcasters. It's also possible it was played from video and this was a fault made during the transfer that somehow accidently made it to air (though they were VERY quick in getting the right tape on air if that was the case)
A few years back ago I watched a BBC training video for telecine operators from the early 00s, and it had exactly the sort of thing you see here when they started and stopped the film and adjusted the speed.
It's even more bizarre when the film snaps on air- there's an example of that somewhere on a BBC1 repeat of Star Trek from 1985-ish.

This makes me wonder whether there was any overlap between telecine broadcasts and digital playouts. In my mind, there were very distinctive eras of film, then VT, then digital, but it looks like it was never quite as neat as that.

I am surprised tv broadcasters still play tv shows on telecine in mid or late 80s

The episode in question is High Drains Pilferer (Series 4 Episode 3), first shown in 1984 (if Wikipedia is correct, 25th January 1984). That gives you the earliest possible date this incident was from.

From the look of the program card Thames was using, I'd say this was from around 1986/87. Though that's only a guess, it could be as early as 85, but perhaps a bit later. Yeah the way the tape gives out like that is a very scary thought, I'm sorry that it almost gave you a heart attack because of it. But thank you though for capturing and uploading this. :)

Haha - don't worry, it's was only a brief, "Uh-oh, what's happening...? Oh, right, it's part of the recording." A scary three seconds, nothing more. It was a nice find, so thanks for sending it!

@@gavinn6905 I doubt the recording is as old as 1980 (as the other recordings on the tape were dated from 1988), but that type of caption was in use for a while, till around 1987 as you say.

      @VideotapeFTW  10 місяців тому

@@gavinn6905 That's interesting. I don't think we can entirely rule out this being from the original 1984 broadcast, based on that caption style (which I think was already slightly out of date then). The plot thickens.

@@VideotapeFTW Yeah I think it's from either 86 or 87. The reason I think this is because I have a recording of a Minder from the Granada region where, before ad breaks there's a voice over announcement from Colin Weston mentioning a Minder episode where Terry goes back to school. The episode was originally taped but then taped over with another episode just as the aforementioned episode starts, but the slide they used for High Drain's Pilferer ep was the same slide they used here with Arthur talking to Terry. I know they did show repeats of series 5 of Minder around July and Aug 1987, but I think they did (well at least Granada did) repeat some episode in 1986 as well. Granada was using their "coming this autumn" theme and logo, and very likely the other regions were doing the same.
Edit: I've just checked the recording I have with Colin Weston's Granada announcement showing the same slide used in this upload, and it is from the 9th October 1986. You can probably find it on my channel under "ITV Granada ads, 9th Oct 1986".

Nice theory. Though they would more then likely use DVD or Blu-ray masters for broadcast nowadays. Or some kind of digital source.
