Thames Television was a franchise holder for a region of the British ITV television network serving London and surrounding areas from 30 July 1968 until the night of 31 December 1992. Thames Television was acquired by Pearson Television in mid-1993. Pearson Television was itself sold by Pearson plc to the RTL Group in 2000, and rebranded as FremantleMedia in 2001. In 2003, Thames Television was merged with another FremantleMedia subsidiary, Talkback (founded by comedians Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones in 1981) to form Talkback Thames. That subsidiary was split into four new production companies at the start of 2012, with the new Thames producing light entertainment programming. Their home video division, Thames Video, was founded in 1978, and later merged with The Video Collection in 1985, reducing the Thames name under a label titled Thames Video Collection, which later reverted back to Thames Video in 1991, which VCI continued to use even after Thames lost their ITV franchisee, and continued to release videos under their name until 1999 when VCI's deal with Pearson Television expired.

As a kid, I wondered why there was an aeroplane in the river on the right until I realised it was the raised bridge+ its reflection!
It's important to know that Thames Television only operated on weekdays. The Independent Television Authority said that this was done to avoid that 1 London franchise could buy the rest of the franchise holders. Because of that, Thames never broadcast the full week, instead passing on Friday evenings to the weekend franchise holder, London Weekend Television (LWT). On Monday mornings, Thames would start-up again, with the cycle repeating like that.
Yes indeed that was so at the time of course. Thank you so much for this and well done too!!
Mas mesmo assim não fazia sentido esta franquia do fim de semana londrino, como a Thames iria comprar outras franqueadas (como Granada, Southern, Central, Scottish por exemplo)?
Thank you!!
@@Vinnytv7679 I don't know what this says alas!!
Yes and so it did too-from 1968 to 1981 Thames handed over to LWT at 7.00pm on a Friday; and then because the IBA decided to alter the times, from 5.15pm on a Friday also from 1982 to 1992. When Carlton took over in 1993, the same time switch to LWT was retained, until I think the ITV brand came in in 2002 or so at the time.
If I ever become really really rich, I am going to hire a brass band to follow me around and play the 'Thames fanfare' every time that I enter a room!
Many of my fondest TV memories were bookended by these timeless & charming intros. I remember the 'Night Version' well as it was used before the classic Armchair Thriller series.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
At 16:30, this was the first version of the final logo, which was only shown before local programmes. When Thames lost the franchise, the music got tweaked slightly.
Interesting fact! Thanks for sharing!
I remember Thames used to produce "Count Duckula," which, even though it was a British cartoon, also aired here in the US on Nickelodeon back in the late 80's and early-to-mid 90's.
Yeah! I've heard of that show!
Count Duckula was made for Thames by Cosgrove Hall Productions, who were also responsible for Danger Mouse, Chorlton And The Wheelies, Noddy, The Wind In The Willows (hard to believe that something as mind-blowingly well-animated could have ever been made as a weekly TV series!), and one-offs such as The Fool Of The World And The Flying Ship, The Talking Parcel, the original The B.F.G., and The Pied Piper, amongst many many more. Thames knew they could depend on Cosgrove Hall to produce something both entertaining and classy, and that would sell overseas, so bought the company. Unfortunately, when Thames lost their franchise, that also meant the beginning of the end for Cosgrove Hall.

2015
Actually 2015 would be MMXV, so it must’ve been a typo
@@saph100Well yes I wasn't exactly being serious, it will have meant to be MCMXCV (1995). Definitely not 2015 as those logos for BBC and Thames were long gone by then
8:54 I was wondering when Kenny was going to show up :D
Wow! I absolutely love the Thames Logo history video here. You did a Marvellous job getting the different variants of the Thames Logo over the years including Thames Television, Thames Video, Talkback Thames and many more.
I love the variant of the Thames Television logo at 8:00. Is it from a Christmas animated movie?🥳🤩
Thank you very much! I truly appreciate it!
You are very welcome my friend. I love the Christmas version of the Thames Television logo at 8:00. Is it from a Christmas animated movie?🤩
From 0:47 to 3:35 I see they were going through a bunch of different jingles before finally deciding they liked the original 1968 tune the best.
Yeah nothing beats the original in my personal opinion
9:35
They can’t get away with that on TV!

I've only today just realised the tall figure between Big Ben and Saint Paul's Cathedral is the BT Tower - I always thought it was Nelson's Column!
Or as it was known back then the Post Office Tower.
@@jackmonaghan8477 Bear in mind that when Thames started broadcasting, the PO Tower was just three years old, so I imagine it was included to show the company as modern and forward-thinking. I could, of course, be talking utter gibberish.
Another great logo history! I’ve always had a liking for the early Thames idents, and the fanfare used from 1968-1970. If you can’t tell what the difference is, it’s the last four notes. I just like how it sounds. But yeah, Thames had some great idents
Thanks for watching! I agree with your comments, and the idents are a huge classic, especially to those who watched Benny Hill, Kenny Everett, etc.
@@JontyMaster That’s true. I also think that Thames was one of the only regional identities to work well with the generic ident look, since their logo was literally a triangle..
15:12, 15:26, 15:40, 16:12, 17:11 used Nov 1991 to Dec 1992 (i.e. after the ITV auction results)
16:30 and 16:59 used Sept. 1990 to Nov 1991 (i.e. before the auction results)
16:45 used Christmas 1991 and 1992
Just wish I knew why they made the choice to use that so much less beautiful rendition from Nov 1991 onwards.
@@MQsCues I think they had that ident planned for whenever they dropped the generic look. I saw part of it in an upload of a news broadcast reporting on the auction results.
@@adultmoshifan87 no they already used it (with its original, more harmonious soundtrack), but only on regional programmes (about 10 times a week) from Sept 1990 to Oct 1991.
Loved this trip down Memory Lane
On the 13:39 clip, there's a static footage of the Thames endcap, but should there be a video footage of it to be founded yet? If not, we'll still find it until we find one by the end of 2028 as the earliest if confirmed!!!!

How on earth did THAT get past the censors?
Back in the 70's and early 80's you could get away with anything. Thames and LWT produced some of the most racist shows ever to be broadcast which probably was the reason there was some much hate back then.
Gawd knows 🙄🤦

why did you blurry the logo around 15:00? and why is it copyrighted? and what copyrighted material does it use
I remember when uploading and processing the video that part of the video got copyright claimed for some reason. I don't know what copyrighted material it used, since all the other ITV Generic idents from 1989 never gave any copyright claims.

What do you mean by pre-franchise?
I.e., before 1993.

I think you meant "pre-independence". Pre-franchise would imply Rediffusion and ABC Weekend TV.
I meant, the 1990-97 logos/idents made while Thames was still an ITV franchise first, then the post-franchise versions.
