Facebook is like life outside social media. It depends where you go and who you mix with. I know the horrible side of life is there, but I choose to go towards other things, and have learnt so much and seen so much supportive behaviour on forums, say, but also here on UA-cam in the various comments sections.

If you want intelligent interesting discussions with people who have a great deal of knowledge, I think it has always been the case of small groups. Back in the days where Britain was a technological superpower there were millions of these small specialist groups, but as with so many things, over the years they were all merged together into massive faceless and dumbed down institutions like say the IET. However all is not lost. YT has some good channels where you get these people. One of the ones I really enjoy is based over in Taiwan and is to do with chip production. You get people on there who are leading scientists and researchers. So whatever you are interested in, it is best to find those little corners where this goes on.

IF a Muslim cleric promoted violence against an artist like Taylor Swift and het fans because of her 'immodest' stage costume and performance, then if an act of violence did occur like a bombing or a shooting by his followers would he not be responsible in some way for had happened ? and would he not also be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. What then is the difference between the hypothetical case and what actually happened in the right wing race riots - those who instigated the riots are just as or more responsible than the thugs throwing bricks and should suffer the full consequences a well.

Absolutely with you on this call to action, sir. Anyone who tells you that writing to your MP is a waste of time is either wholly misguided or speaking in bad faith. And any MP who does not hold surgeries is not an MP, but rather someone exploiting the title and privileges of an MP for their own nefarious means.
As to freedom of speech, I’d put it even more simply: There is a simple difference between expressing your beliefs and opinions, and incitement. And, if you are inciting along with other inciters, you are taking part in a conspiracy. And conspiracies that lead to criminal harm are criminal conspiracies. As these people are beginning to discover, we already have multiple laws on the statute books which cover such instances.
People on the far right, whilst using social media, love to use expressions like, “educate yourself,” and, “echo chamber,” when dealing with anybody who disagrees with their egregious take on the world. Well, now they are having it proved to them that they should have practiced what they preached.
These are the lessons that will have a far greater impact on the far right, and will go further toward remedying the hate speech so rampant in modern discourse. It’s not just rounding up a few well photographed, well documented thugs, 70% of whom turned out to have previous convictions for violence and football hooliganism. But getting at the puppeteers and cutting their strings. I applaud the sentencing of this woman, and hope to God she will learn something from her experience.
And I bet there are multiple other online, “activists,” urgently seeking legal advice as we speak. I do hope we jail at least double digits more of them?

I'm not sure how psychologically correct this is, but my assumption is that, to a greater or lesser extent, we all wear masks. The fewer masks one wears, the more honest one is.
What do I mean? Social situations temper our behaviour, we read the room and select the mask that allows us to blend in. Not everyone does, some choose deliberately to not fit in, however most want to.
As a result, they will appear to think and act as the group does.
Social media, however, is very different; almost like wearing that mask in a dark room. You don't regulate yourself in the same way. One becomes emboldened, one "speaks one's mind." Social norms are cast off, you're amongst friends, you are in an echo chamber; the checks and balances of human facial expression and body language are absent. You are "free."
Social media, I suppose, is very much like intoxication, a form of social inebriation; Uncle Jim is a perfectly decent chap, upright and well meaning, but give him a couple of light ales and he's a lascivious groper of bottoms. Is that the alcohol's mask or the social uncle Jim's mask slipping?
So it is with social media, are these closet racists the real persona or a mask worn when in the company of the chatroom racists?
Social media also allows one to create a highly edited artificial version of your persona. Pictures are selected, words are edited, one becomes an avatar of the person you think others will want you to be. It's all a bit plastic. A contrivance.
    Words, like actions, have consequences.
I believe in freedom of speech; I also believe that people ought to be aware that you're likely to get a punch on the nose if you offend someone.
Freedom of speech is not freedom to offend. It isn't carte blanche to provoke without consequence.
    Caveat Orator!

The British political system is analogous to a bunch of gangsters playing poker. Each of them are trying to knock each other out of the game, but the moment an outsider tries to jack/threaten the game they will band together out of common interest, to protect their game. Such is the political establishment in the UK.

I do pray all veterans decline invitation to IG in the UK. It is time for us to stand up for Harry the way he has worked so diligently for us.🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Harry’s family is in more danger in the UK because of hate, envy & jealousy instead of being embraced & celebrated . . . Why??? As the king does nothing to help communities in turmoil but instead goes on yet another holiday like nothing is wrong. While the 10 year anniversary was not important enough to tear himself away from a garden party to pay respects to the men & women who lay down their lives says everything about leadership. Willy of course chose sporting events, but they want to controlIG for their own glory??? What kind of king is this??? Not one that walks the walk. There is no leadership I the RF that has not broken every one of their own rules & archaic laws but they want to punish Harry for not continuing to be their dumping ground & Harry took everything they threw at him . . . But to want to end his wife & children was nothing Nobel or regal, it was & is evil & corrupt. Especially since Cowmoola’s litter gets the royal treatment. Her children are not of Royal blood but are more beloved to the king . . . There is no greater perversion of love than chuck & Cowmoola’s history. But they want to wipe Harry’s existence from their history. Cowmoola has been robbing y’all blind of your dignity, the things you claim to hold dear, supposed honor & truth & replaced it all with scandal & lies that serve only her. Check the Crown Jewels, I bet they’ve been gone.

7:57 i can’t agree with this. Freedom to choose only good things isn’t freedom at all. In fact freedom in a society is just incredibly limited. We should just accept the fact and move on rather coming up with sophisticated babble as to why we’re actually free in some dubious theoretical way. In any case… there’s probably no such thing as freedom even at the individual level. My belief in free will since my undergrad has been like my belief in God. It’s an act of pure faith in a totally nebulous metaphysical concept I have no evidence for beyond a shaky and probably delusional internal experiences. I maintain faith in the idea for the sake of utility and meaningfulness for myself but I think it’s quite unlikely at the rational level…

Musk and others demand the right to free speech but we already have the right to freedom of expression, which includes speech.
It is granted to us in Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. But Article 10 also says "The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary."
This seems very much in keeping with what Tim is saying. Freedom of expression cannot include freedom to incite violence, crime or the breakdown of democratic society. It cannot include freedom to incite, promote, encourage of share images of the sexual abuse or exploitation of children or other vulnerable people.
If you demand unfettered freedom of expression, you are demanding the right to such abhorrent expression, which is indeed horrific.

You are allowed to hold whatever opinion you wish. But if you publish it, and posting it online is publishing it, you are subject to the consequences. There has been something of a democratisation of opinions. It was formerly the case that only the opinions of those educated and qualified in a subject were given any credence. With the rise of the 'voxpop' media, people seem to think that their ignorance is as valid as someone else's informed and considered position. It is not.

There is an issue you've not discussed Tim this time. Let's look at the two groups the right wing racists and the mass counter movement peace and love shall we call them. It took a show of strength from the latter to drive the right wing minority off the streets did it not. What would have become of the nazis of Britain the Brown Shirts in 1939 who took to the streets of London and were allied with Adolf Hitler. They were only tamed not by politicians but ordinary people who had to fight them, and drive them off the streets. If my history is accurate had they been allowed to swagger around with their swastikas and take control of London and other cities would they have been able to coerse the population by intimidation just like their friend in Germany did?? So there are times when sadly violence is the only mechanism that works. You have to fight evil with evil of the forces of law and order are not sufficient in numbers and there are not enough policemen and women to achieve this at times.

That’s the idea, yes, but the problem is that “good” and “evil” don’t have constructive definitions. I.e. you can’t allow people to do good and forbid them to do evil-because _what_ would they be allowed/not allowed to do? You can only give people rights and set limits (and that’s what liberally democratic countries do) and try to calibrate these so that people *mostly* do good (also by appealing to their morality and ethics). But there will inevitably be a grey zone, where people can and will do both good and evil-and freedom of speech is an example.
