J. Cole - The Bronze Medal

  • If there’s anything that’s uncommon in a genre such as hip-hop, it’s self-depreciation. Built upon an immovable bedrock of bravado, hip-hop is a sport in which the boastful prosper and the modest are all too often forgotten. Based on the days of battle rapping in which the goal was to prove your superiority while taking aim at your opponent’s weaknesses, it's not uncommon to hear rappers make outlandish proclamations of their own abilities.
Little more than two major projects into his career, Polo G was already labeling himself “the goat.”
Similarly, rappers such as Jay Z and Lil Wayne were dubbing themselves the “best rapper alive” long before the culture was willing to accept those tags at face value.
With the industry more overcrowded and competitive than ever, it pays to be cocky, and if a fanbase wants to fight your case for you, then it doesn't make much sense to dispute their claims
Courtesy of this culture-wide endorsement of bragging, hearing any shred of humility can be hard to wrap our heads around. So, when J Cole seemed to be purposefully eliminating himself from all of the endless discussion over who’s at the top of the mountain out of himself. Drake & Kendrick in the modern era, the world was taken aback.

    Rap/album wise: 1. Kendrick 2. Cole 3. Drake
Commercial wise: 1. Drake 2. Kendrick 3. Cole
Live performances: 1. Kendrick 2. Drake 3. Cole
Impact overall: 1. Kendrick and Drake 2. Cole
To me, it's clear Cole been at the third spot for the last decade but he's been climbing to that 2nd spot last few years with a stellar run of features.

That may be boring to your average 16 year old trying to act tough but it's refreshing to a grown up that wants to hear a rapper act his age for once. We don't need another Pusha T or Freddie Gibbs making Gangsta Rap even though they've been successful for over a decade, live in a mansion, only use a gun at the shooting range (no disrespect to either rapper but they have gotten a little stale).

I don’t get how J.Cole saying “SOME PEOPLE saying ‘I’m running third’ they threw the bronze at me” is an admission of defeat. All he did was acknowledge that a lot of people consider him to be the lesser of the big 3, that not him saying he is. There many more things that made that record weak. Cole's discog is the reason he is running third to me Drake ain't one or two tho for me Cole is less boring than Drake by a mile. I remember in 07 when I first heard Lights Please off of Limewire which led me to the Warm Up and from then on I have never listened to an artist that can rap (particularly his early years) and the raps truly emulate the listeners life and that’s what Cole does for me. This man’s albums got me through breakups when I was done so dirty and listening to his music and him saying things that I felt in those moments got me through depression and even a suicidal thought. This is why he’s #1 to me, Drake is an amazing artists and obviously the best of the past decade and a half and Kdott I never could vibe with. Drake = Body
    J Cole = Soul
In my opinion you feel J Cole more than Kendrick, and Drake is more commercial so he is the body of Hip Hop while Kendrick is the intellectual of Rap, but you feel J Cole way way more, ironically the soul is more overlooked than the body and mind hence why J Cole is so overlooked and underrated x

I think through his change in his feature philosophy and working with artists, he slowly began to stop putting so much focus on being a competitive rapper solely especially with Kendrick Lamar which is why I think The Off-Season was the album it was. Not a concept nor a record that attempted to catch the ear of fans through catchy tunes; just a masterclass of lyricism that made J Cole proud and only his fans proud. I'm happy J Cole isn't trying to catch Kendrick or Drake, cause simply he isn't neither of them nor should be. He's the everyman or rap.....

Cole can call his self third because he knows the public is going to correct him he don’t have to do it his self. That’s what a true king does

Drake don’t write his own lyrics like J Cole and Kendrick. He just more popular. People don’t wait for Drake for his bars thought they dope, but do t hold a candle to Cole or Kendrick

Kendrick & Cole lyrics aren’t complex at all, Cole has bars here & there but Drake has more bars, Kendrick & Cole ‘s music just has more deeper meaning

@@moballardful Me too. He messed that up doing an interview saying he had ghostwriters. He may have meant for songs but not necessarily lyrically but the damage was done. Then the whole culture vulture thing along side his lack of originality by stealing others songs. Real hip hop enthusiast know better the rest of society just follow who is POPULAR

Numbers are numbers and jcole knows that. He’s focused on putting out the best music he possibly can. The moment you’re soley focused on numbers the music suffers. In an era where rappers are overhyped Jcole is a true artist and it’s backed up by his work. No one will forget his name 20 years from now and that’s a fact.
