Frat Rap is pretty cringe, but Mac Miller is the perfect example of how one of these typea dudes can easily grow into something unique and special. I’m not gonna lie, I always fucked with Mac Miller even early on when he was seen as the epitome of frat boy rap. He’s always made good music. But his transformation late in his career was pretty remarkable to watch as his sound and subject matter matured significantly. We lost a real one when he passed, RIP.

I am surprised you didn't take it back to one of the earliest examples of frat rap with the Beastie Boys and their Licensed to Ill album which was totally in that lane, in fact it may have created that lane. People forget that their first major album, while iconic, is without a doubt the epitome of the sound. Then they turned around and with their next album changed their entire image with Pauls Boutique which pulled them from the likelihood of being a one hit wonder to one of the most iconic groups in hip hop history right along Run DMC and Public Enemy.

Honestly although Mac Miller's early music was categorized as "frat rap", he blossomed into an incredibly talented and humble artist and you can hear it, too. He got the respect he deserved by the time he released Swimming, in my opinion. And let's not forget he was a multi-talented musician and multi-instrumentalist that played all instruments beautifully. Circles might be one of my top 3 favorite posthumous releases of all-time. RIP Mac.

If you were around Mac's age growing up you literally went through all his progression with him. Weather it be 14 yo young stoner rap, to early 20s depressed rap,..to MUSIC that would relate to any person, and anytime and will never get old. I don’t personally know any black people who listens to Mac Miller, like I see black people online sometimes post his songs on the app called BopDrop, very very rarely, but in real life I don’t know a single black person who listens to him, not anyone my age or older. I liked some of his songs he did in the Tiny Desk Concert but I never just listened to him like that & I’ve never been in a car with anyone listening to him. Right… reminds me of great times that shaped me into who I am today. The KIDS mixtape was literally playing during one of the best and most free times of my life. Summer going to 8th grade. My happy memories will inevitably be entangled with Mac Miller.
As an older head that grew up on 90s purest hip-hop and underground, when Mac Miller came around I didn't give him much of a chance, and I feel bad about that. It wasn't until after his death that I took a closer look and saw that he was in fact due the respect that I wasn't willing or ready to give him. Thanks for not mentioning the Beasties Licensed to Ill album which even though opened the doors to hip-hop in this aspect to a lot of heads in my generation, was also their worst album and an embarrassing moment for hip-hop. I never liked it. I came in thru a different kind of frat/college rap album called 3 Feet High and Rising.
Mac wasn't frat rap to me, he was always making boom bap type songs and more in that stoner Wiz & Spitta lane. I'd say he got more "weird" when he started kicking it with Earl, Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Etc. Agreed. I listened to most of his mixtapes back in the day and whenever I let someone else listen in they were always shocked because they expected I love College. He probably wouldn't have ever had a big hit, but his place in hiphop ended super early because of that.
Frat rap also had a very short period of relevancy for the most part, frat culture as a whole in popular media had a huge peak in 2009-2012. So when that died down frat rap did too, and Mac was smart for dismissing it and expanding his sound way beyond that stereotype.
He got better with time and personal growth. I respected him a lot more later on than in the mixtape days, and he does deserve more respect at this point. Saying everything he ever made was amazing is silly though. That's almost never true even of the best artists in any genre. I'm glad you love his music so much and I'm not saying you're wrong for it. But his name is in this discussion for a reason. Branch out. Regardless Mac Miller is the only one out of this category from that time period who actually lasted and grew, same can't be said about any of the others.

the thing that set mac apart from the pack was that he was a MUSICAN first, and whatever weird label you put on him second. He has similar origins to these other names but when the dust settled he was just on another level, and a lot of people could feel it.
Gotta admit I felt the same exact way Danny Brown did back in like 2010-2012 about Mac Miller. I didn't even get into him until 2015 and i heard Brand Name off GOOD AM and thought 'damn this is good" I then ventured into his other music around then and he became one of my favorite artists of all time within a year I still haven't listened to most of his 'frat rap' music aside from a few tracks.

really cool video. when i first found out about mac miller, when he was just starting to make music, i didnt like it at all, and definitely wrote him off as corny like all those other frat rap guys, but when red dot music came out around the time i was a teenager, i definitely had a new respect for him and enjoyed his music, i think the only thing that made mac different from the other guys was his actual respect and appreciation for rap music, even going back to listen some of those songs he had released early in his career, you can still see that he still has a respect for the genre and definitely doesnt try too hard to do anything super different from the norm. also i wish mgk would stop talking like he has any authority in rap music when he's just as corny as all the other frat rap guys making music.

I still go back to like three different Beastie Boys albums. That rap trio including their DJ's deserve the props on how different every. single. song. was drastically different than the next. Phenomenal lyricism from those underrated champs.
I shamelessly love this genre. Sammy Adams, Hoodie Allen, Chiddy Bang, early Mac Miller. As long as you don't take it serious, you can enjoy it. It's fun party music. My favorite artists are Beatles, Queen, Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Chili Peppers, Incubus, NIN, Weezer, etc. I like to think I have good taste in music. Frat rap is just pop, with the added element that encapsulates the college experience. Just enjoy it for what it is.

I find it interesting that in 2010 Hip Hop Blog culture had "Frat Rap" trending and it became really popular...yet at the same time, "Easycore" also gained a lot of fans in Warped Tour music culture...I am almost 100% sure you guys have never heard of it haha...but look up "In Friends We Trust" by Chunk No Captian Chunk and "California Kicks" by Fight Fair...It could not be more obvious that there was a trend that year of "college music" being marketed towards high school kids. I doubt even the rappers and bands knew of eachother, but you can see there was a lot of parallel development happening in both subgenres. There must have been a demand in youth culture for party songs. High schoolers just wanted some tunes that made them feel a little bit older I guess lol

I found Mac Miller annoying in his early career because that style of white kid stoner/party rap was so corny, inauthentic, and shallow and the kids in my school who loved it were the worst too. If you were around in his mixtape days around the same time the many other generic upper-middle class white kid rappers with nothing to say, it can't be denied that Mac Miller was in that camp. But Mac actually improved as an artist and became genuine to a point where I had to respect it. It feels like Mac Miller always had a genuine artistry in him, but when he was getting started he was still just a kid and at that time a lot of "white rappers" felt like they had to fit that generic mold to have a chance. I still wouldn't be fan if he had never changed, but he did it would be a lie to say he wasn't a genuine and good hearted musician by the end. It's sad that it took that pain for him to be taken seriously. I am white myself and I'm definitely not saying there aren't white rappers who are genuinely artists or good, but during the early 2000's through like 2015 there was a plague of rappers whose entire gimmick was their race and how they didn't have it hard but had "swag" and loved weed. Those other examples he gave were just the start of the embarrassing acts labels were pushing back then. MGK is definitely not one to talk either lol
Na mgk was more of a hybrid of rock/punk rap than frat rap. He didn't have the happy carefree blandness of frat rap. Even DMX gave Mgk the Cosign and defended mgk from Charlemagne on the breakfast show. 1 of Mgk's biggest idols is in fact DMX.

The frat rap discussion is always a weird one. So hip hop made it clear they hate White boys rapping about partying and their suburban upbringing. That's understandable since hip hop was built off the struggles of Black men. But the rise of trap in the later half of the 2010s has led to White kids to rap about typical hip hop subjects and reject the frat rap image of partying and being middle class. This is also hated in hip hop, because of the lack of authenticity. So which will it be? Are we gonna hate White rappers who are *technically* keeping it real, or are we gonna hate White rappers who are regurgitating what their non-White counterparts are rapping about?

Frat Rap is pretty cringe, but Mac Miller is the perfect example of how one of these typea dudes can easily grow into something unique and special. I’m not gonna lie, I always fucked with Mac Miller even early on when he was seen as the epitome of frat boy rap. He’s always made good music. But his transformation late in his career was pretty remarkable to watch as his sound and subject matter matured significantly. We lost a real one when he passed, RIP.

I am surprised you didn't take it back to one of the earliest examples of frat rap with the Beastie Boys and their Licensed to Ill album which was totally in that lane, in fact it may have created that lane. People forget that their first major album, while iconic, is without a doubt the epitome of the sound. Then they turned around and with their next album changed their entire image with Pauls Boutique which pulled them from the likelihood of being a one hit wonder to one of the most iconic groups in hip hop history right along Run DMC and Public Enemy.
That album created a lane for all of hip hop my guy. That was the 1st #1 rap album. They broke the door down for the entire genre.

Honestly although Mac Miller's early music was categorized as "frat rap", he blossomed into an incredibly talented and humble artist and you can hear it, too. He got the respect he deserved by the time he released Swimming, in my opinion. And let's not forget he was a multi-talented musician and multi-instrumentalist that played all instruments beautifully. Circles might be one of my top 3 favorite posthumous releases of all-time. RIP Mac.

As an older head that grew up on 90s purest hip-hop and underground, when Mac Miller came around I didn't give him much of a chance, and I feel bad about that. It wasn't until after his death that I took a closer look and saw that he was in fact due the respect that I wasn't willing or ready to give him.
Thanks for not mentioning the Beasties Licensed to Ill album which even though opened the doors to hip-hop in this aspect to a lot of heads in my generation, was also their worst album and an embarrassing moment for hip-hop. I never liked it. I came in thru a different kind of frat/college rap album called 3 Feet High and Rising.

But his name is in this discussion for a reason. Branch out. Regardless Mac Miller is the only one out of this category from that time period who actually lasted and grew, same can't be said about any of the others.

Gotta admit I felt the same exact way Danny Brown did back in like 2010-2012 about Mac Miller. I didn't even get into him until 2015 and i heard Brand Name off GOOD AM and thought 'damn this is good" I then ventured into his other music around then and he became one of my favorite artists of all time within a year

really cool video. when i first found out about mac miller, when he was just starting to make music, i didnt like it at all, and definitely wrote him off as corny like all those other frat rap guys, but when red dot music came out around the time i was a teenager, i definitely had a new respect for him and enjoyed his music, i think the only thing that made mac different from the other guys was his actual respect and appreciation for rap music, even going back to listen some of those songs he had released early in his career, you can still see that he still has a respect for the genre and definitely doesnt try too hard to do anything super different from the norm. also i wish mgk would stop talking like he has any authority in rap music when he's just as corny as all the other frat rap guys making music.

I shamelessly love this genre. Sammy Adams, Hoodie Allen, Chiddy Bang, early Mac Miller. As long as you don't take it serious, you can enjoy it. It's fun party music. My favorite artists are Beatles, Queen, Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Chili Peppers, Incubus, NIN, Weezer, etc. I like to think I have good taste in music. Frat rap is just pop, with the added element that encapsulates the college experience. Just enjoy it for what it is.

I find it interesting that in 2010 Hip Hop Blog culture had "Frat Rap" trending and it became really popular...yet at the same time, "Easycore" also gained a lot of fans in Warped Tour music culture...I am almost 100% sure you guys have never heard of it haha...but look up "In Friends We Trust" by Chunk No Captian Chunk and "California Kicks" by Fight Fair...It could not be more obvious that there was a trend that year of "college music" being marketed towards high school kids. I doubt even the rappers and bands knew of eachother, but you can see there was a lot of parallel development happening in both subgenres. There must have been a demand in youth culture for party songs. High schoolers just wanted some tunes that made them feel a little bit older I guess lol

I have always felt that Mac Miller grew as a muscian as i grew up. it really felt like the dude was evloving into a whole different pokemon before he passed.

Mac was just able to adjust and stay with the times also challenging his art he didn’t stay in the same lane also you can tell he took his time growing too that’s why he’s one of the greats in hip hop and respected the way he is
I found Mac Miller annoying in his early career because that style of white kid stoner/party rap was so corny, inauthentic, and shallow and the kids in my school who loved it were the worst too. If you were around in his mixtape days around the same time the many other generic upper-middle class white kid rappers with nothing to say, it can't be denied that Mac Miller was in that camp. But Mac actually improved as an artist and became genuine to a point where I had to respect it. It feels like Mac Miller always had a genuine artistry in him, but when he was getting started he was still just a kid and at that time a lot of "white rappers" felt like they had to fit that generic mold to have a chance. I still wouldn't be fan if he had never changed, but he did it would be a lie to say he wasn't a genuine and good hearted musician by the end. It's sad that it took that pain for him to be taken seriously.
I am white myself and I'm definitely not saying there aren't white rappers who are genuinely artists or good, but during the early 2000's through like 2015 there was a plague of rappers whose entire gimmick was their race and how they didn't have it hard but had "swag" and loved weed. Those other examples he gave were just the start of the embarrassing acts labels were pushing back then. MGK is definitely not one to talk either lol
Na mgk was more of a hybrid of rock/punk rap than frat rap. He didn't have the happy carefree blandness of frat rap. Even DMX gave Mgk the Cosign and defended mgk from Charlemagne on the breakfast show. 1 of Mgk's biggest idols is in fact DMX.

The only response people need to this is, "let people like what they like." It's immature to dislike someone because of the music they created or the music they like. There is no need to "hate" someone because of music unless the music brings hate towards others.
The frat rap discussion is always a weird one. So hip hop made it clear they hate White boys rapping about partying and their suburban upbringing. That's understandable since hip hop was built off the struggles of Black men. But the rise of trap in the later half of the 2010s has led to White kids to rap about typical hip hop subjects and reject the frat rap image of partying and being middle class. This is also hated in hip hop, because of the lack of authenticity. So which will it be? Are we gonna hate White rappers who are *technically* keeping it real, or are we gonna hate White rappers who are regurgitating what their non-White counterparts are rapping about?

not really about them being white and more about them being suburban and coming from a good background with no real struggles or issues and just floating or coasting by through life. people hate punks like that. same with all the punks who front and act like they bangin when in reality they are gangsters only in their rap and havent even sold a bag of weed. those two groups can go to hell and really have no place rapping about shit they have no idea about. nor should they be rapping about how easy their beer pong trust fund lives are.
people really like terror reid and he was a music producer for OWSLA and comes from a good background in california but he doesn't make frat rap. his flow is unique and his lyrics are hilarious and brutal kind of like a white verison of tyler the creator. i think you are probably a racist who is trying to tell people how you feel even though you know you cant because you are racist and your thoughts are wrong.

Late to the story, but let's not forget that Beastie Boys could be considered the OG in Frat Rap with "License To Ill".. And the attitude they had..... then they dropped Paul's Boutique and it was like a paradigm shift in the BB's "philosophy"
Mac was not frat rap. Dude started as a teen rapper and blossomed into a real deep introspective artist whose content spanned a range of topics mostly addiction and depression. Put some respect on his name.
In my opinion it's still a lot better than fake rapping about growing up in the hood when you didn't. They were just rapping about their life

I'm happy the video touched on this because pre-2013 you could call it frat rap, but afterwards that idea is wash. Everything from Watching Movies to Circles is a piece of art. I understand the mainstream view, when the only Mac you've listened to is blue slide park, loud, donald trump, etc what other perspective would you have lol.
Even though he didn’t have a lot of time, Mac still proved himself right in becoming one of the greatest of all time
