@@princealigorna7468 really? Sounds like it's about something actually dangerous, like global warming... Cold War had victims, but Soviet Union was utterly defeated and we freed with only a few dozen heroes killed by russians in the process. Current war is much worse BECAUSE russia wasn't destroyed in the Cold War, unfortunately.
@@KasumiRINA In the 80s, us Yanks didn't know the USSR was in decline. This was Reagan's "evil empire" era. This was the Day After Tomorrow era. We were convinced even more than in the 70s that Russia was going to nuke us back to the Stone Age at any second. Klaus was an Immigrant from a divided post-war Germany living in a paranoid America. You do the math
When he died I was 11. I read a news in the newspaper: "the new disease that affects gays killed the singer Klaus Nomi". They said it was "The new tremendous gay's desease" I didn't even know who the singer was, but the news shoked me, I had pity for him and for all the gay people... Soon, I lerned that the desease kills no matter the sexual orientation you had. So, like all the world, I learned how to fear about AIDS. But my fear, since then, has always been related to the memory of poor Klaus Nomi. And today, for the fisrt time, I am listening the poor guy singing, and I find him weird, interesting, and really nice. Hope you are having a good trip, Klaus. 💜
Thank you for sharing your thoughtful comment. Your contemporary observation is invaluable, and it's wonderful that you carried his memory with you and that you were able to find him here.
That's what's missing in pop business today: Crazy artists. Crazy in a good way. You could love it or hate it. Today you can like everything a bit, because they're taking the edge off of everything.
I am sure Klaus could have changed the history of modern music but the Gods preferred to have him singing for them because mankind was not ready for someone like him.
Nomi really has some excellent musicians. The lead guitarist is very good. Probably because of his classical training, Nomi recognized talent. Sad he died so young.
"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die." -Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Wow, i glad i've found this in 2020, i didn't know that such artist exist. Looks like he was very talented, great artist of avantgarde. Greetings from Moscow
My God! Und wenn ich oder wir jetzt mandarin, polnisch oder oder schreiben... Wo steht das man VERPFLICHTET ist unter dieses video deutsch zur schreiben.
I remember going to see this in 1982 at the NARO in Norfolk Virginia and having a Beck's Bier and splitting a joint with my friends. When Klaus came on we were all slack-jawed, and then amazed by what we had seen. Leaning over, my friend said: "As your attorney I advise you to buy this album tomorrow."
I completely stumbled upon Klaus Nomi by complete utter accident yesterday. Surprisingly, being a huge Bowie and Kraftwerk fan, I never heard of him sooner. There is no explanation but I just love this video. The backing band and his singing and performance is unbelievable.
I miss the 80's so much, everything musical was accepted for what it was, country and western to the weirdest shit, it was all taken in it's stride during the 80's, Klaus Nomi was amazing,
I remember seeing him on german tv in 1982. Being 16 years old then I found it really good. Unfortunately Germany wasn't ready for him back then. At least he started smelling his success before he had to go. Thanks for that. Klaus was decades ahead.
+EnigmaBoi85 He was a showman and a giftet singer. Maybe it was his looks that fascinated me, because I was into DEVO and Kraftwerk too. Whatever. It's 2016 and he is still alive on social media. It's good to be able to judge the musical heroes of my youth now that I'm close to 50. Klaus Nomi has become a bigger heroe ever since.
werid science? oh perhaps if you have the time, look up mystic knights of the oingo boingo that was their full name once, then it was just shortened to oingo boingo. the reason they are so unheard of now is because danny elfman was the frontman and quit because he some how accdently blasted out something of his ears. i enjoyed speaking with you.
Klaus would have turned 78 today. He was born January 24, 1944.. We still miss him and all that he brought to the Avant Garde music scene in the 70's/80's era.. AIDS took Klaus in '83..
When I first saw this, as part of Urgh! A Music War on a rented VHS from blockbuster videos, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it… my appreciation has grown as time has gone by. I want to give a particular shout out to whoever the guitar player is on this - scorching!👍🎸❤️
Exactly my reaction. Musically, it's brilliant, but the operatic aspect I didn't get to appreciate till years later, revisiting this tune. Straight amazing.
Remember he was put down like a dog by Fauci and the boys... Usually whip crackers are Egyptian but in his case he's a reverse Moses looking for the back door to hell
Stumbled across this by accident and I have to say this is absolutely the greatest 4 minutes of entertainment I've witnessed in years. How did I not know about Klaus?
Because the world has a preservation valve, that triggers automatically when a form of interruption is necessary. I think is working, I didnt know him either, Thank God or a Disgruntled Angel for that.
Klaus was mainly an underground German artist even if he sang for instance with David Bowie or other more "popular" artists. Very original singer with an out of sight voice. He was on stage in Europe and the US.. If I'm not mistaken , Klaus was one of the first legendary Queer. He left us too early..
@@catherinefotic4614 Any particular Bowie tunes he's featured on? Honestly, I don't like this song but can appreciate his voice and the musicianship. Maybe I'd like other songs of his. Idk how this got on my feed but I'm intrigued.
For me this is a perfect performance; Klaus Nomi's incredible voice, musicians who play pure and with drive and background singers with voices of angels ... the fun splashes off your screen. I just can't get enough of this
I rented this movie on VHS waay back when because I recognized some of the early punk acts (dead kennedys, surf punks, oingo boing...). Got to this number and haven't been quite the same since. Love the voice, love the guitar, love the dancers, love the song!
I knew Nomi's music, but never saw much footage of him performing. This song reflects the anguish that all of the youth felt when the natural end of the Cold War was sent into a tailspin by "Ronny RayGun". We all thought we were toast.
You cannot over estimate how influential Klaus Nomi was. His voice was spectacular, Bowie loved him, and he basically created New Wave music. Thanks for posting this masterpiece NEA. RIP Klaus.
Huge, grossly absurd generalizations. How could he have 'basically created New Wave' when almost no one knew of him at all? Bowie was vastly more responsible for New Wave, along with the likes of Eno, Roxy Music, krautrock, punk, and power pop.
The term "New Wave" was invented specifically to describe the post-punk music of the Talking Heads. Nomi was influential, but he did not create New Wave.
Simply brilliant! I only "discovered" Klaus Nomi 3 years ago and just heard this for the first time a couple of months ago but it has grown and grown on me. It's lovely to read the comments from people who met him. It's so sad that he's not better known.
Have you ever heard of celluloid?!? :D You can do great scans in 2K and beyond from over 100 year old movies, if the source was kept in good condition.
I was metalhead guy and really against other musics. He was really talent, free person, he loved his music. He style was very nice ! Very nice voice ! He lived as a free man, he realized his dream. The worst thing is one, he died alone and with pain. He doesn't deserve it. Rest in peace my brother. We are very lucky because of you, you gave us something different and one so nice mixed of music. Thank you. I hope you singing in heaven!
I was 14 years old. Numan and Nomi scared the shit of me. This was the beginning of the New Wave movement. Ironically, I ended up wearing make up, paisley shirts, blazers, Nana boots, and sugared my hair for stiffness.
why he is not so famous? He was one of the most original singer ive ever listen. He sang so alucinant , so unique. Its was so sad how he died. He deserve a biopic.
He was only around for a short time. He started properly doing shows in the late 70s. He put out two albums in the early 80s. Then died in Aug 1983. If he had been around longer I'm sure he'd have been really huge.
I am 52 years old......and only now am I hearing about Klaus Nomi. This is utter amazing, way ahead of his time and obviously a very talented musician. Pity he has been taken so young. R.I.P.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised it's a cold war song. Those were just a subgenre unto themselves in the 80's.
This guy could easily be one of Batman's villains from the 1960's show.
He was Prodigy before Prodigy existed :)
His supervillian power would be turning everyone...FABULOUS.
KLAUS NOMI WAS A WONDERFUL TALENTED HUMAN BEING
He was the basis for a bad guy on "The Venture Brothers".
Totally agree
Today is Klaus's day!
Ohhh finally, I'm one of the dancers here, and I've been after this video for four decades. Thanks a lot.
He didn't die :) he just went back home
Sweet way to say he's not here with us any longer.
SOUTHPARKFOREVER240 Oh, how cliché!
SOUTHPARKFOREVER240 Such a nice thought :-)
He died indeed. Dont be fool
back to the source...
When he died I was 11. I read a news in the newspaper: "the new disease that affects gays killed the singer Klaus Nomi". They said it was "The new tremendous gay's desease"
I didn't even know who the singer was, but the news shoked me, I had pity for him and for all the gay people...
Very interesting history...
For context, where did that article come from? Just wondering.
@@dr.velious5411 About 40 years ago... Who could remember today? I was living in Italy, so It was one Italian daily newspaper for sure...

What a brilliantly shiny soul that man has
That's what's missing in pop business today: Crazy artists. Crazy in a good way. You could love it or hate it. Today you can like everything a bit, because they're taking the edge off of everything.
Stef Ullrich well said. Genuine authenticity is rare, in an era that values fame vs. art.
Die Antwoord is a band you either love or hate. They do push the limits for sure.
Kate Moon too bad they’re really shitty people

I am sure Klaus could have changed the history of modern music but the Gods preferred to have him singing for them because mankind was not ready for someone like him.
He was the best countertenor that ever sung. Ever. RIP, Klaus Nomi. We lost you far too soon.
He would have been as great as they: Bowie, Jagger, Elton John, Fred Mercury among others...
What gods?
All of them. Only they recognize one of their kind.
Nobody was.
Getting psyched for tomorrow's total eclipse!
Nomi really has some excellent musicians. The lead guitarist is very good. Probably because of his classical training, Nomi recognized talent. Sad he died so young.
Son : Daddy, what is a genius ?
Dad : * plays this video *
So, so true 👍
Thanks daddy.

Yup I'm here for the total Eclipse of the sun! 2024
if you ain't watchin this 4/8/24 you're not doing the eclipse right
40 years ago. Yet timeless!!!!
His performance is hypnotic, I couldn’t stop watching.
Since I'm gonna be sleeping during the eclipse today, I came here to at least listen to this magnificent song.
Will be jamming to this on April 8th!!
Wow, i glad i've found this in 2020, i didn't know that such artist exist. Looks like he was very talented, great artist of avantgarde. Greetings from Moscow
And here is singing with David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World on SNL in 1979.

Thank you Bambi from Queens of drags to remember him and performing his song perfectly

My God!
I'm so glad today's culture finally caught up with him.
because we're ALL freaks now ...
I remember going to see this in 1982 at the NARO in Norfolk Virginia and having a Beck's Bier and splitting a joint with my friends. When Klaus came on we were all slack-jawed, and then amazed by what we had seen. Leaning over, my friend said: "As your attorney I advise you to buy this album tomorrow."
jesterd14
Was your friend Hunter S. Thompson?
And that attorney? Albert Einstein.
"As your attorney i advise you to drive at full speed"
I wish I was around there 😊
I completely stumbled upon Klaus Nomi by complete utter accident yesterday. Surprisingly, being a huge Bowie and Kraftwerk fan, I never heard of him sooner. There is no explanation but I just love this video. The backing band and his singing and performance is unbelievable.
Just loving that Klaus Nomi is still being loved and recognised. Eclipse or not
I miss the 80's so much, everything musical was accepted for what it was, country and western to the weirdest shit, it was all taken in it's stride during the 80's, Klaus Nomi was amazing,
Check out...Anna Baboula...Greek odd funky stuff with traditional instruments n modern twank
God bless him 🙏
I remember seeing him on german tv in 1982. Being 16 years old then I found it really good.
Unfortunately Germany wasn't ready for him back then. At least he started smelling his success before he had to go. Thanks for that. Klaus was decades ahead.
+Sodom1912 then you always had wonderful taste.
+EnigmaBoi85
He was a showman and a giftet singer.
Did you ever get into oingo boingo? I like the band.
+EnigmaBoi85
Yes.
I have the Soundtrack of that Kelly Lebrook movie. They have a song on it. Never heard of them again.
werid science? oh perhaps if you have the time, look up mystic knights of the oingo boingo that was their full name once, then it was just shortened to oingo boingo. the reason they are so unheard of now is because danny elfman was the frontman and quit because he some how accdently blasted out something of his ears.
i enjoyed speaking with you.
Klaus would have turned 78 today. He was born January 24, 1944.. We still miss him and all that he brought to the Avant Garde music scene in the 70's/80's era.. AIDS took Klaus in '83..
I’m here for the total eclipse!
Scott Woody was the guitar player on the LP. Is it him?
Exactly my reaction. Musically, it's brilliant, but the operatic aspect I didn't get to appreciate till years later, revisiting this tune. Straight amazing.
I just discovered this for the first time last night and he has been on repeat all morning 🖤🖤🖤🖤
It's powerful isn't it?
Very much my experience too :)
He was incredible.
@@rw8733 for real
Remember he was put down like a dog by Fauci and the boys... Usually whip crackers are Egyptian but in his case he's a reverse Moses looking for the back door to hell
Stumbled across this by accident and I have to say this is absolutely the greatest 4 minutes of entertainment I've witnessed in years. How did I not know about Klaus?
Now check out his collaboration with David Bowie.
you didn't miss much.
.

The Germanest thing I've ever seen.
Hiya there

Ja, sehr Weimarich.
This and Nina Hagen

This tune is so mesmerizing. Words can't describe it. It's on another level.
I have a giant Klaus Nomi leg tattoo. Not kidding.
Proof?

Go Klaus!
Who's here 2024 eclipse?
You cannot over estimate how influential Klaus Nomi was. His voice was spectacular, Bowie loved him, and he basically created New Wave music. Thanks for posting this masterpiece NEA. RIP Klaus.
Huge, grossly absurd generalizations. How could he have 'basically created New Wave' when almost no one knew of him at all? Bowie was vastly more responsible for New Wave, along with the likes of Eno, Roxy Music, krautrock, punk, and power pop.
Buggles
Пиздец . ..АВИА шутка
The term "New Wave" was invented specifically to describe the post-punk music of the Talking Heads. Nomi was influential, but he did not create New Wave.
Yes! Keith Haring was also a big fan and I recall Michael Stipe from REM talking about one of Klaus concerts and thinking that the guy was amazing
His mime look and the whole thing as a concept is so artistic, creepy, charming. What a showman
Yes, that's very well said, "artistic, creepy, charming." It's still unique nearly 40 years on.
i suspect that is exactly what he was going for. :)
That audience had no idea about the awesomeness they are witnessing.
They mostly still dont have any idea .....

The 80s, hard to explain at times but sadly missed.
Happy Eclipse in Heaven Mr. Nomi!
The 80's underground was awesome!
why he is not so famous? He was one of the most original singer ive ever listen. He sang so alucinant , so unique. Its was so sad how he died. He deserve a biopic.
He was only around for a short time. He started properly doing shows in the late 70s. He put out two albums in the early 80s. Then died in Aug 1983. If he had been around longer I'm sure he'd have been really huge.

Like I said, I became of fan of Klaus listening to the Rush Limbaugh show, a nationally syndicated talk radio show.
How did he die?
I am 52 years old......and only now am I hearing about Klaus Nomi. This is utter amazing, way ahead of his time and obviously a very talented musician. Pity he has been taken so young.
R.I.P.
I'm 54 and known for my musical knowledge and up until 2 minutes ago I'd never heard of this guy. I do now and soon so will my mates
I was thinking of this song while watching the eclipse in quebec :D
RIP Klaus!!
It was so nice of the members of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer and ELO to volunteer to be Klaus' back up band...
