I know you guys have been waiting for this video, so here it is!! honestly this is one of my favorite videos that I've ever filmed. i feel like I didn't sugar-coat anything during the week and just know rush is NOT easy!! it is okay to cry, and be overwhelmed. but it all ends how it is supposed to! a ton of girls in my sorority said our house wasn't their first choice and they were disappointed, but ALL of them said theyre happy how it turned out. you might think you click SO HARD with certain girls in a sorority and end up in another one and not understand why, but once you know the houses and the general personality types of the other sororities, you'll be happy you ended up where you did and that they just knew youd fit.
ive talked to girls i LOVED--and still didnt recommend them back because i thought of my sisters and knew they wouldnt make those super close friends
what happens if no houses pick u? and also can you live in the house the first year you go, like im british and considering doing a year of college abroad in the us but it would only be for a year, so could you live in the house the first year?

@Polly McKinlay It depends on where you go but generally you can only live in the house after your 2nd year, since you spend at least a 3rd of your first year being a 'trainee/pledge', where you're not a full member yet. If you're only going to be abroad for 1 year I'd say don't rush because joining a sorority takes up A LOT of your time.

ugh I love how raw this is. during rush I fell in love with a house and I thought they liked me too but I was dropped at the very end. I took a leap of faith and went for my second choice and it was the best decision I ever made and I can't imagine it any other way!! everything happens for a reason and you'll always end up where you're meant to be :)

I cried a lot during rush. But I’ve been in my house for a semester and love it more than anything!
I had to drop out of rush at my university because I was just so confused as to how the conversations could feel so genuine but they would drop me. When I talked to the girl in charge of my group she literally just assumed it was because I didn't get my top which I did........ I knew it really just was not for me but this is such a different process. I think the best thing you can do is stay true to yourself and never compromise your values to be liked
same thing to me. it made me feel like everything was so not genuine. and even after when i thought i was still cool with some of the girls i clicked with, i would see them around after rush and they wouldnt even look at me like i didnt exist even tho they knew my name. KKG sucks lmfaoo

I can't figure out how conversations with just a few girls are supposed to enable each "side" to make a decision. Who does the actual voting in the sorority? I have thought it would be a good idea to rush after the first year so you see how the organizations are involved

I hope you know it's similar to applying to a university or a major that does cuts every semester. These girls are applying to be in a nationally recognized sisterhood. There is going to be a process and yes you will be accepted in whatever sorority you land in.
MAYA hell yes this is the content that I love. I am 2 years out of college so I did rush in 2015 and felt the exact same way during that hellish process. I wish there was someone being this vulnerable online that I could have related to during it. Although I had never been at a lower point in my mental health than that week, I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. It helped me realize how strong I was and who I could turn to for a good cry lol. Keep on being a beautiful bad bitch
i love that when showing their outfits, they pointed out if they got a good deal on them. it makes me so excited when someone asks me where i got something and i can tell them how good of a deal i got!

Heck yes! I prefer non-formal recruitment, but either way, I love the sorority I’m in. It’s an insanely great, supportive community!
macy martelli it’s completely worth it. I went from being home schooled and isolating myself from friends and a social life to having someone from Greek life to lean on in every inch of campus. The connections you make with your sisters and in Greek life will last a lifetime. Everywhere i turn, there’s someone who feels like home and I wouldn’t have had that if it weren’t for this process. It’s extremely hectic during recruitment but that’s about as hectic as it gets in a sorority. Rush week is intense and it feels almost impossible because of the jam packed schedule and classes but after that, you’ll get so much more. On spot adventures, study partners, mentors, big and little families, crafting fun, meeting and position knowledge and more. You get what you put in.
Recruitment (as it is called on the sorority side, we no longer call it rush) is a scary process, I’m not going to lie to you, but it can be an amazing experience. Most importantly you have to go into recruitment with an open mind. One thing to keep in mind with recruitment, is not all schools are the same. I highly encourage you to do some research on recruitment for the school you want to attend.
i will say that you do need to consider all the expenses. i ended up signing up for rush and then not even going cause i forgot that once you get into a sorority there’s an initiation fee that can be anywhere from like $700 to like $1k which is insane considering there’s also a $115 fee just to rush (and outfits to wear to rush + semester dues). i honestly don’t get how they justify charging that much money but yeah, very important thing to consider. i’m still sad i didn’t get to rush tho :(
I'm a Sigma Kappa, and I'm so glad you shared the tough parts of rush week! When I went through recruitment, I thought I was literally the only one who had bad days, but it worked out so well! I hope future PNM's watch this and can learn from your experience and know that the process always works out in the end!
this is why i’m glad i went to a school with a smaller greek community… i’m currently going through rush at USF and it’s one weekend of Friday-Sunday (spirit day and then two philanthropy days) and then a week break, and then Saturday-Monday (sisterhood, preference, bid day). i think that break in between really helps to reduce burnout. For me, I ranked my top 8 yesterday and this morning i got 5 back, including my top house:) next weekend it’ll be reduced again and i’m REALLY hoping to keep that top choice

Jenni Camacho it’s pretty rare someone doesn’t doesn’t get into a sorority it may not be your “top” one but you will find friends in whatever sorority you join I highly recommend going Greek.

Based on what friends have told me, no it is not worth it.
look at it this way : everyone in you sorority pays the same fees, BUT you get out of it what you put in that's why everyone feels different about their sorority it depends on ur experience :)
Yea all sororities cost money but think of it as an investment- if you’re super engaged and involved in activities and being with members, maybe even get a chair position yes the money is worth it! The business connections you can find and friendships that last are worth it imo
SOME sororities may cost less then living in a dorm if you live-in. because oftentimes the food, housing, utilities are all in the dues. but this is definitely not the case for every sorority and many have super expensive dues that aren't worth it.

The awful things said about my sorority ended getting our charter pulled because no one wanted to join the so called ‘reject sorority’. Please ladies if you go through recruitment (on either side) don’t help spread rumors, all sisterhoods are valid. Pan love.

i had no idea tech does spring recruitment. i'm going through recruitment at longwood in the spring and i was so nervous and thought we were the only ones 😅 this definitely helped me relax about it so thank you !

This is so much different than fraternity recruitment.
I hung out with the guys for a few weeks, got a bid and big brother, then I was initiated a few weeks after that. Very little stress on our end. But that was my own experience.
I rushed for a sorority and I was also head over heels. When I was dropped like I cried so much because I didn’t fit there values or morals as I wanted to or I didn’t fit in. I decided to join another one that showed me my morals or that didn’t change me in a bad way but into a better person! I love how it turned out! There amazing, best girls I ever met, I’m so glad to call them my sisters. If one doesn’t work it’s for a reason! Really. Sometimes the first one or the one your heard over heels doesn’t work because you just don’t fit or it isn’t the one for you. You’ll find the one that is perfect for you and will accept you for who you are not who they want you to be

I just don't understand why the females put their selves in such a harsh environment just to be accepted to a sorority that treats them like crap. I live near lane stadium and I see alot of the stuff you have to do. I don't think it's fair how they treat you. You should be good enough to join any sorority you want but they have all the say so. Hang in there and hope you take care of yourself during this covid 19. Tech is all upside down right now bc my wife works there.

I’m planning on rushing and I don’t know much but what I can tell you is girl if they don’t accept you for your height then you don’t want them. Your height is who you are and you just gotta accept it and even show it off. Be proud of who you are

I applaud you for doing this ! It seems soo stressful . I did continuous open biding . And it’s so less stressful and more personalized as well as less chaotic . I don’t think I could’ve ever done actual rush/recruitment. I’m proud of you!!!

Why would people go through all of this to be accepted in a club? You can have friends and have fun without being in a sorority maybe is because im not from “mainland” but i really dont understand. Why is it so important? Like im genuinely Curious cause is not that big of a deal where im from.
Rush was super stressful for me, I go to a smaller campus and there are only 3 sororities. I was never a girly girl or seemed like the sorority “type” and after the first night 2 of the 3 dropped me, but I am so happy with the sorority I’m in, I’ve made so many amazing friends and already have a chair position! It’s the best decision I’ve ever made!

It’s interesting watching these videos and kind of comparing and contrasting them to how rush works at my school. My personal experience: my school is kinda small so the rush process wasn’t as long and luckily for me it had a good result. I completely get the exhaustion and breakdowns though. Recruiting was so stressful and tiring at the end of the longest day I just started crying for NO reason. There’s so much happening on both sides it’s kind of insane we put ourselves through it. It’s refreshing to see someone documenting an experience that wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows
I don't understand why girls put themselves through this emotional turmoil, it seems so unnecessary. The way the sororities decide who they want is so shallow in my opinion?
Also sororities literally strip you from your sense of individuality. The way Greek life functions creeps me out.
In my experience at least and from what I know about a majority of Greek life, it’s not shallow like it may seem. Sororities recruit based on their values (for my sorority they are friendship, truth, and self-sacrifice). We look for girls that embody these values, are passionate about philanthropy, academics and leadership, and will be able to bond with the rest of our members and grow to their potential during their time as a member. The reason that recruitment is so long and draining is because we are really trying to get to know the girls, and they are trying to get to know the chapters to see if it’s a good fit. It’s just like finding a college, it takes time to make sure you’re making the right decision. Also a lit of the emotions can just come from being so tired. It takes a lot of energy to talk for so long!
At what point do the grown women putting themselves through this realize that "sorority culture" is essentially a dumbing-down process a/k/a assimilation? Totally cultish and brutal.
Women: "Judging is wrong."
Also woman: "OMG, I literally cannot stop being judgey."
Hi Maya,! Great video! accurate and honest depiction of one of the ‘savage rites of passage for young women’. I was lucky and I was going to my very first top choices for preference night during fall recruitment. I wasn’t feeling well all week but felt worse and had a fever the day I picked up my preference list. I was diagnosed with a fever and strep throat and was isolated. I was unable to attend the parties. If you don’t go, you are a no show at this highly competitive TX school.
I was so upset, as the chapter members later said that I would have been offered a bid, and we stayed friends. I went skiing at Christmas with my family in Vail, went to Boulder and fell in love with CU. I transferred and went thru recruitment again. A glutton for punishment. It was still ‘tiered’ but was different.
Still 800 PNMs and only 8 sororities with 60 person pledge cap. This seems ridiculous that a person could go through the process and still not get a bid, even after preference, if she was towards the bottom of the lists.
I got the same invitations and joined my first choice. A friend got dropped by everyone, and another got cross-cut by her choices on preference night. If it’s meant to be, you will be with these new friends and sisters regardless of the university. I was just lucky to have made it through, nervous, but I had a much better experience than so many. It is well worth joining the right group where you feel at home.

ive always wanted to be in a sorority, but from stories ive heard a lot of sorority girls are super toxic and cliquey and i feel like i wouldn't fit in..can anyone give thoughts on that? seems kinda like the popular girls in highschool where you have to have one specific personality, one style, and be drop dead gorgeous to be accepted by everyone
I would recommend going through the rush process. Going through rush, a lot of sororities can surprise you and not feel like the stereotype they portray. I think it'd be worth exploring and if you end up not liking them you can drop but you may be surprised and it may all be worth it!
There’s a lot of different types of girls in sororities. I wasn’t super popular in high school but I love being in a sorority! There’s diverse body types, styles, and personalities to a point. I feel like bubbly happy girls are more likely to want to join a sorority

I'm an Alpha Chi too and I feel like I had a super similar experience as you. Wherever you feel comfortable is the right place for you and I'm so glad you are joining our sisterhood! I'm not a huge sorority girl at all but I saw this video on my home page and felt super compelled to watch it all the way through because I had a feeling it would remind me of my experience. I completely related to all of this, and thank you so much for such a honest, vulnerable portrayal of the process. This is so, so important for rushees because you're right, so many of these videos make everything seem smooth/easy/perfect fun, when recruitment is truly like boot camp and it's draining in every way.
I went in with an open mind, but quickly realized recruitment was going to get to me emotionally and physically. I ended up getting sick mid-way through and it really hurt my conversations because I was tired and didn't feel well. I also felt crushed by certain houses that dropped me and embarrassed by things I said and did (nothing was that big of a deal but looking back I cringe), and to this day, I feel sad about ones that dropped me and mistakes I made haha. It's something that just sticks with you and, especially as a young college student, can be a massive blow to your self-esteem. I too called my parents and cried multiple days from exhaustion and anxiety.
