I am in Alpha Omicron Pi at Cal Poly Slo, but I tried to make this video general to all sororities so it could eliminate any bias. Being in a sorority has been a great decision for me but I understand that sororities are not for everybody. I just wanted to address some questions I had been getting.

@@madalynchadwick6643 you can look up the process on your colleges website but you go through a recruitment process after submitting an initial application/filling out a form to sign up for the process. There are a bunch of videos that detail the actual process and what “rush week/recruitment week” looks like

Sammi Nicole yup, I go to Eastern Michigan University and Greek life isn’t big. There’s only 8 sororities and each have a cap of about 42 members.
at the university of alabama, it can be up to $4000-$5000 which is so crazy to me!! and if you live in the house it’s around $6000

I'm going to community college first but when I transition to uni I'll def try to rush a sorority. I've been wanting go join one since watching monsters university, and Legally blonde as a kid lol. I am a little nervous since I'm a latina, and haven't heard much stories of Hispanics/Latinas being in one but I'm still willing to give it a shot.

What activities do you actually do? and how many girls are often in sorority’s?
Most weeks we have a dinner exchange with a fraternity, we participate in other sorotity/fraternity philanthropies including our own throughout the year, we have sisterhoods (roller skating, spa nights, hikes, drive in movies, etc). We also have semis, date parties, and formals 3-4 times a school year. It’s super fun! I’m not sure the numbers but greek life is around 20% of the campus
@@SammiNicole How many girls are in your chapter, like for a pnm did have you have to remember 40 names or like 200...how long did it take to even talk and know everyone.
My pledge class was around 70 girls. It varies per year. My chapter has around 200 girls. It took me a bit to remember everyone’s name but going to events and making an effort to meet people will make it so much easier. I also love that because we are constantly getting new girls I keep getting to meet new people. There’s still some girls I haven’t hung out with yet but that’s what makes a sorority so cool

I’m really nervous for recruitment joining a sorority and I’m just wondering these are dumb questions but is there any sort of unspoken dress code for recruitment? And what sort of questions do all girls generally ask when you visit different sororities?
They aren’t dumb questions! I was confused too! Girls tended to wear dresses most of rush at my school and they got fancier throughout the week. I’d recommend watching a rush outfit video - I have one on my channel! Questions girls may ask might be why you want to join a sorority, what you were involved in during high school, hobbies/interests, etc. I wouldn’t worry about the questions tho because it’s the active members job to help guide your convo so you’ll never have to do this! Just answer honestly

I became a sorority member in 1973. I also worked as an alum recruitment advisor for the local university in my area. I find her information to be accurate. Just to clarify a few terms. Rush and recruitment are the same thing. Pledges and PNM‘s are also the same thing. PNM stands for potential new member. it is interesting that not much has changed in 50 years!

I think this depends on your school and sorority in general. There may be overlap in your events/games/practices. I know a few ppl that do both

I know it’s late to be commenting but I’m thinking about joining this spring and I was wondering if joining a sorority is hard if you’re a more shy person? I’m currently a freshman in college and the main thing holding me back is my anxiety and I was wondering if it will be too much or if I will get used to it
Hi! It can be a bit intimidating at times since you talk with a bunch of girls, but I think you should go for it! It’s kinda awk but also so fun haha. Rush is the weirdest part for sure, but once ur done it’s soo much better and not stressful. Also keep in mind not everyone in a sorority is super outgoing either ❤️

Does joining a sorority take a lot of time out of your social life ? I’ve been thinking ab joining one but it looks like a little more than a lot of planning and activities that I would love to be a part of but would I be able to have a life outside the sorority?
Hi! Yes! You’re definitely able to be in more things than just a sorority. You get out what you put in so whether that’s most of your time or some, it’s really up to you. Sororities typically encourage being very involved on campus outside of Greek life
Sororities and fraternities seem like an exclusive club where you need money, looks, and health to get in. Once you're in, it's just a way to access parties, alcohol, and sex during college and high social status throughout life.
I’m watching a ton of these to understand it more bc I know nothing but wanna rush in the fall! With big/littles how do you meet each other and make such a good bond? I’m nervous that I won’t meet anyone and get that good bond. Does it happen over recruitment or before by reaching out!?

It’s depends on the person! I met my little thru recruitment but it wasn’t until we hung out after that we really knew we’d be big little! The sororities will pair you with girls every week to help you find a big, going to sisterhoods help, and sometimes it’s super random in how you meet! 💓

All of this is very interesting and I've really been thinking about joining but I do have one question, how do i get chosen and how and what to prepare for?
Every sorority looks for different things but most sororities I’ve heard look for well rounded girls that are looking to get involved and enjoy a fun sisterhood! Just be yourself they are trying to get to know you💗 there are other videos on UA-cam that can help you prepare outfits / answers to some common questions

You definitely don’t have to join one! Sororities aren’t everyone’s vibe and that’s totally fine. I always recommend it if it sounds interesting at all to you since it can be a great way to meet people. Sorority events don’t impact my studies in a bad way it’s actually helped me do better in school since they care so much about grades

That’s way too many commitments. A part time job + medical school alone definitely would be overwhelming

I’m 18, I got my GED and did my first two years of college at my local community college, I’m finishing my last two years at an University, and I’m genuinely interested in joining a sorority but idk if I’m too late? or if I’m too young? Hi! Aw thank you ☺️ I think joining a sorority can be a great way to make friends. I do think your experience depends on the school because some sororities support more freshman/sophomores to join since they’ll have several years to make friends etc. I don’t think that should push you away from rushing (I’ve known a decent amount of juniors join!) , but keep it in mind since you’d only get 1-2 years in the sorority. It’d be helpful to reach out to specific sororities at your school to see if this is more common than you think.
I want to join a sorority when I get out of the military just bc I’ve always wanted that experience of I guess a normal civilian life with people my age. I joined when I was 17 so all I’ve known for 3 years is army. Would a sorority even choose me? I’m very social but I’m not a girly girl and my experience in life so far is a-little different from most people my age.

Hello, I am entering my senior year of HS and plan to attend college after graduation. My academics are above 4.0 and I got 1380 on SAT's. I have not decided where to go or really even what I want to be when I grow up, lol. I've just started researching College life but my sister told me I should join a sorority. I've poked around today and read a lot and this is going to sound really funny, but I'm not really a girly girl and was just wondering if I would fit in to Greek life. Hi! Every house is different so you have a great chance at finding a house that you like! You do not have to be a girly girl to be in a sorority although some girls are. Sororities have different friend groups in them and I know my sorority definitely has a mix on the types of personalities and activities the girls are into doing!

No problem! During the rush process girls generally wear dresses, skirts, rompers, but if that’s not for you then don’t! I would just dress to show your personality. If you decide the process is weird or being in a sorority is too girly for you that is totally fine too. It’s just hard for me to say because every school is different.

@@CayleighKristine that probably depends on the school and the sorority. You would most likely not be able to stay in the house right away simply bc school starts before rush so you wouldn’t know which house you’d be in and all of that
Honestly, I live in Canada where there aren't sororities. But all these videos and movies that touch on them make me want to move to America and go to UF to join a sorority and study business. I want to live my college life to the fullest.

Hey! I don’t think it’s a bad idea to join right away! If anything it’s a great way to meet friends right away. However there’s no problem waiting. It’s a bit less common for second years to go thru recruitment but it’s totally okay! If you go thru recruitment and realize it’s not for you, you can stop the process

@@applewood389 technically most people are already adults when they rush. If you live in the house my guess is that you would need to finish the year just because you are paying for it. However if there was a certain circumstance I’m sure you could move out.

Hi! Many sororities have a payment plan to best fit the girls needs. Additionally many sororities have scholarships for their members
do the girls that don't live in the sorority house get to be involved in the same amount of activities as the girls that do live there
I would say so! Everyone in the sorority would be invited to all the events regardless of who is living in. This could depend on the school tho but I’m pretty sure that this is correct

Hi! Sororities and fraternities are part of Greek life yes! Not all schools have them but many do:) If you want to join you can follow your schools Panhellenic and request information or it should be on the schools website💗💗

Hi! Yes there are Asians in sororities! I agree that it does appear that sororities are majority white, but this truly depends on your school and it’s overall demographics. Sororities as a whole could get more diverse

Gosh I’d hope not! At my school there is no hazing or dropping girls if they have a bid. We aren’t pledges either. Hope that helps

Ohh I see what you’re asking! Not everyone gets into sororities because there is somewhat of a limit on how many girls each sorority can have. This really does depend on the school you go to. For my school I think around 97% of girls get into a sorority if they want to but some schools have less. You aren’t guaranteed a spot just by going thru rush. Hope that answered ur question!

You didn’t really answer one of the questions you mentioned at the beginning. You said you would talk about how to know if sororities are a good fit for you but all you said was you’re there for philanthropy. Another commenter said they saw no diversity in sororities and that’s true. I’m interested in being in a sorority but I’m not an extroverted “popular” girl. I’m an extreme introvert that doesn’t have the popular girl air about me, but I wanna make friends and help a cause I care about. No one will just say that I’m not right for it, but it’s kinda weird if you’re about the ideals of a sorority but have a different air about you.

I know that is something many people think about, but it is so much more than that! The memories you make are incredible and there are always events to participate in and ways to get involved on campus. Keep in mind you aren’t “paying” for your friends. You are paying to run events, host formals, buy food/decor, and support a house for your sorority
Do you have to drink hella when you get recruited because sadly I can’t drink ever in my life due to my chronic illness? Also does it matter what skin color you are?
No you will not be forced to drink or do anything you do not want to do. We have a ZERO hazing tolerance and I’d expect other universities to have the same. It also does not matter the color of your skin but it matters who you are and your values. The goal is to have genuine, diverse, well rounded girls ❤️❤️
I’m a freshman at Northern Virginia Community College and I joined 3 clubs. I heard being in a sorority is time commitment. Idk if I want to join one. I probably won’t but I’ll see and let you know. I just found your UA-cam channel after I typed in “sorority”

I want to join a sorority for the connections, but I’m a film production and theater major, and I go to a smaller college. Plus I’m non binary (born female). I’m so scared to be excluded or ignored for being gay, non bi, or too ugly. The bigger college I used to go too did not like people like me. This video helped me understand a bit better than I did, so thank you. (Anyone know any good sorority’s for theater? Preferably around Kansas City)

I would say it’s a bit different just because the majority of girls in your pledge class will be freshman. However I’ve found that girls that join later still have a great time!
Is it difficult to have a job while in a sorority? I’m an incoming freshman and I will be commuting, so I’m planning to keep my current job. I really want to rush though, and I hope schedules are not conflicting :/
You may need to take off work during recruitment because the days are long but while you’re in a sorority you can definitely manage work with it if you plan your time out well. Most girls in my sorority work! You may miss stuff every so often but for the most part you know early in advance when things are happening so you can plan accordingly

As I'm finishing up my application and about to submit the documents, I became curious as to why different organizations ask for unofficial and official transcripts? Is it because some are national organizations? The sorority I'm interested falls under the MGC. Why can’t they check our gpa with the registrar’s office? Is the sole purpose of providing transcripts is to verify that oneself is on good academic standing gpa wise? Do they confirm their admission that our transcripts are real?
It probably depends on the school. I don’t think I ever submitted an official transcript. GPA is important so they probably want to confirm your grades

I know this is an old video, but I still had a question. What are chapters? And also, are all the sororities on campus still connected by a main organization or something? Or are sororities from different colleges with the same name connected to each other? I’m sorry if these are obvious questions, but I’m not from the US but still like to learn about greek life there.
Hi! Chapters are the different sororites on campus. Sororities are connected by a main organization like Panhellenic. Hope that helped!!

How long does a sorority last?
The sorority college events last during your undergraduate years. Afterwards you can join an alumni chapter.
Heyy so i dont really know much about sororities and i wanted to know if u can balance that stuff with studies and other schoolwork or does it become wayy too hectic cause i wanna avoid that and does it ever require u to skip classes to attend events?
Hi! I’ve found a great balance of doing both. It may depend on your school but at my college balancing it is not very hard

Ok so super random question but what is the setup of the room like during rush?? Do you all sit at tables or stand and talk or are there long tables you just rotate through?? I know this is super random but I am so curious abt this aspect bc no one actually talks about that part of rush... from a current hs senior
Great question!! If it’s in person your rush group will stand outside the house and one by one the sorority girls will come pick you up from the line. Then you’ll either go into the house to have a conversation or the backyard and typically sit at tables near other girls going through recruitment. You’ll have a conversation with 1-3ish active sorority members that round. The active members make it super easy for the PNM so don’t worry! Hope to have in person this fall🤞🏼

I’m graduating high school in 2022, and I’m planning to go to college. My parents don’t want me in a sorority from what they’ve seen on tv. Is it really like what I see on tv with all of the girls are drunk all the time and are only in college to be in a sorority and go to parties? Are sorority houses as big as they show on tv? I know I’m kind of particular, but can I know if members of a chapter have like the same major as me and stuff like that?

Hi! Sororities main focus is their sisterhood and service for others. The media makes sororities seem very different than they are. Some schools have huge sorority houses with like 60-70 girls living in and some schools have a few girls live in. My sorority is full of girls from every major
@@SammiNicole You didn't really give her a full answer though. What she asked is mostly true regarding sororities and their lifestyles. They're party girls that do drink, vape/weed or dress skanky etc. They usually party with the frat boys.

Are girls genuine during recruitment?
The girls I talked to during recruitment were very nice and wanted to get to know me! At times it didn’t feel genuine because I’d get asked a lot of the same questions. I do think it depends on who you talk to (some convos will be more genuine than others) but I’d hope they’d all be genuine to you!
ik this is an old-ish video, but is it possible to have a job and be in a club or two while also being in a sorority? i know i’ll need to have a part time job in college and i’d like to participate in other activities that fit my interests, but would i have time for all of that while being in a sorority and still having time to study?
It’s absolutely possible! Sororities put academics and jobs as their top priority so you’ll be able to balance everything! My sorority actually encourages us to be a part of at least 2 clubs

20 is not too old! We get transfers all the time! Sometimes sororities take younger girls more often since they are more likely to be in the sorority longer, but not all sororities are like that and many of them don’t care at all!
