This is a total failure on CONMEBOL. They wanted to control the event, pretty much ignored best practices and created a dangerous situation for fans. Hard Rock Stadium literally gave them plans for how to create perimeters around Hard Rock for this event and CONMEBOL basically threw them in the garbage. This isn't a US problem, this is a CONMEBOL problem.

This happened in the US, its an awful look. If the US gave all the reigns to conmebol(which is most likely bs and a blame game) then they are just as responsible. How could they expect a federation to come from outside and organize anything well? Regardless a South American tournament should not be held in the US it was all corruption

CONMEBOL definitely needs to bear the brunt of this debacle, but dont be mistaken USSF has some degree of culpability as a co-host. They are to sign off on the CONMEBOL plan. Also, the relevant law enforcement and municipal agencies have requirements for events based on several factors, such as crowd size. Clearly there wasn't enough security. Failures all the was around, from CONMEBOL on down.

Of course its also a US Problem if US soccer officials and US Authorities give all responsibility as a host nation away to CONMEBOL. You are a the host of an international tournament. Police looked like they go on a fishing trip. They are not prepared to face international football fans. Its not MLS or super bowl.

The venue didn't host any viewing parties outside or nearby, didn't hold off on selling portions of sections until day of, didn't bring extra security, didn't open their gates earlier to better-improve the traffic flow, and didn't offer additional ways to enjoy the game in large settings----all while arguably millions of Latinos are trying to watch the game in a congested region of Florida.

@@DIAC1987 Let's ditch the race card in this. It absolutely doesn't matter who was doing this crap. Color, culture, advocacy and all that stuff is secondary to the point.
The people who rushed the gate were trying to get in free. They figured that if enough of them got in that stadium security couldn't or wouldn't evict them all. AND they figured that they would steal [yes, STEAL] seats from the people who actually bought tickets.
That shit's wrong no matter who you are or where you're from.
Don't mistake me here. The venue made mistakes. That's obviously true. But bum rushing the gates to try and see the game free was a crime and those who did it bear the primary responsibility. The venue doesn't owe a Goddamn thing to victims who didn't have a valid ticket.

This wasn't even so much a problem at the 2016 tournament, when the US soccer federation controlled every aspect of the proceedings outside the game itself, which is not what happened with this version, as CONMEBOL controlled those aspects, despite the US being the hosts and knowing what to do, with each stadium hosting giant events like this on the regular (especially those Taylor Swift concerts, too)

If we take the previous game between Colombia and Uruguay into consideration, where Uruguayan players had to protect their families, it's more like that the Colombia fans can't behave themselves.
Argentinian fans went to Qatar in great numbers without any problems.
It says a lot about how Colombians are behaving in general.
Surely CONMEBOL is also at fault for not having the final of the Copa America in a stadium with a bigger capacity, a lack of improve security given the previous behavior of Colombian fans in the game against Uruguay and the lack of better Logistics in place to prevent fans without a ticket getting so close to the stadium.

Because it happened in Miami and in that stadium (and that uneventful past events are not the point)... It's not good enough for the stadium to say, we gave the organizers blueprints and they turned them down. If that is the case then don't accept the event. Yes on some videos you see some unruly fans but on many other videos you see a stadium that was not prepared for this event.... Corraling thousands of fans into a fenced in area and causing a pileup. Too easy to say that Conmebol was the organizer. The venue owners also have some liability as do local officials. I am assuming that in Miami as in other locations around the world for an event of this size you get a permit and that your security arrangements are vetted (since you do have law enforcement there). there are videos where security is trying to hold back barriers / fencing not of people without tickets but people being crushed. so yes that causes a lot of issues on the fact they seemed unprepared

Yes and no, in the sense that they were ill-prepared for the level of behaviour displayed by the fans. American Sport culture is completely different, battles are waged on the pitch, not amongst the fans, that is not only frowned upon, but also simply not tolerated. They are simply not used to people showing up without a ticket, let alone pushing to get in, so yes, they were unprepared, but it was the fans, and I could easily single out somebody, who behaved like animals and just like it happened for the English supporters decades ago, after the Hysel Stadium tragedy, CONMEBOL should hang a several years ban on those fans or are we waiting for something to happen and somebody to die? Instead, they are looking to punish Bielsa or those players who behaved like human beings and try to defend their families, instead they booked a 30-minutes, half-time concert, totally disrespecting the game and the players. They are clowns but dangerous ones.

The blame is on the fans, who will do anything to gain entry to the stadium, with or without tickets and on the authorities who should take all necessary steps to thwart them. Rich Eisen correctly identifies multiple tickets checks, well away from the ground, as being essential. This was the problem at Wembley in 2021 for the Euro final and at Stade de France in 2022 for the Champions League final. Football authorities have got to wake up as there could so easily have been numerous casualties.

The same company which provides security staffing at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte for the post-match fiasco also provides security at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, for what that's worth. Somehow, I don't think FIFA is going to want to work with that company in two years time, because that's not exactly going to exude confidence that security will be airtight in 2026.

In a Conmebol's statement, they are blaming Hard Rock Stadium and local authorities for the problems at the final game. They indicate that they "recommended to these authorities the procedures proven in events of this magnitude, which were NOT taken into account". The word not actually appears in uppercase in the statement. I assume that the proven procedures alluded to refer to establishing security areas around the stadium as Rich pointed out. All this deserves an investigation to determine responsibilities.

I’m from the UK and unfortunately this isn’t uncommon in “soccer”, especially South American soccer. Seems like every game the South American teams play there’s fighting and rioting and police involvement. Fans are so passionate that they’ll pay thousands of dollars to get to the US and take their chances on trying to break in and maybe see their country win a trophy. Thats football ⚽️

People getting bent over the SB comparison are missing the point. He's saying the security of the event didn't match the moment. The same would have been the case if the Euro final organizers treated it like an October matchup of Everton and Crystal Palace.

As someone whose family is from South America let me tell you it’s a different culture. Maybe in Europe too, I don’t know. I’ve been to so many stadiums in the US for other sports and this never happens. But the ONE time I saw a soccer match (Ecuador vs Mexico) at Metlife people were pushing forward like they wanted to bring walls down. I had to yell at people behind me, strangers just shoving me forward. Security had to bring German Shepards across the fence to keep us in order. And the escalator stopped working because of so many people on it. What an embarrassment. This is EVERYONE’S fault and I’m not surprised.
