Fun fact: acording to Gai'a actor. Gai was orginally going to live at the end of the series. With the twist just being him as the best man at the wedding. it was during the last few days of filming that Inuoe changed his mind. With his reasoning being that Gai dying was ironic symbolism that the biggest threat to humanity is humanity. it wasnt a monster or the main villains that killed him but a mugger who if you think about was only still alive cause Gai (who became selfless) along with the rest of the team unknowingly saved in their final battle.
@PowerPackers90 his reasoning is that Gai was the disposable bad boy in the love triangle between the Pink Ranger, the Red Ranger and the Black Ranger. Bad boys in hardcore shoujos always end dying once their use to put pepper between the real couple - the good girl and the good boy who, by marrying her, possesses her, according to the conservative underlying of shoujos - has ended. That's an excuse he made. I have experienced enough shoujo animes (the same Inoue quotes in Jetman) to know where Gai Fits in the scheme of all.
The stuff about Gai and Humanity bla bla bla is BS, plain and simple. Like it's bullshit the crap on the wikipedia page about Inoue being inspired by Agatha Christie and Arsene Lupin. Inoue's main inspirations go by the name of Riyoko Ikeda, Keiko Takemiya, Maya Mineo, Walt Disney etc. etc. etc., meaning the grandmothers (and fathers) of the Shoujo style both in Japan and Abroad. That and Toei's Sukeban series. The rest is BS he says because I guess of a percieved stygma around shoujo by the retarded Toku fandom that wants Dragon Ball where there's never been a place for Dragon Ball in tokus, but still BS is and BS remains. I say it as an HUGE Inoue fan (he's my favourite toku writer ever) precisely because of his (and mine) love for all things shoujo, not for hate.
The 70's Gatchaman tie-in was another genius strategy to appeal to an older audience for Jetman. (It is interesting hearing some describe Gatchaman as a "children's anime" though, when it has a bigger body count than Rambo-First Blood lol!) 🤣
Seriously though, Galactor are just straight up terrorists. They kill like a thousand people every episode at least. Imagine living in a world where giant robots cause 9/11 style attacks every week and the guy responsible is a dude in a purple mountain lion costume, and the only people stopping it are dressed as birds. I like 70's media because they have goofy designs but play them straight, like soldiers in cat costumes using smgs and guning down civilians. It's a kind of whiplash I enjoy.
I finished all 51 episodes of Jetman today and yes it's still resonating even now. The funny episodes like the tomato and the cup noodles, the ones that hurt to watch like Tranza's robot and Ryuu having damn schizo-related disorders about Rie, and just how many characters die in this series. Meanwhile the only living Vyram at the end has a fate worse than death, and this supposed to be a kids show God damn i loved this series
Kiranger (Gorenger), Battle Cossack (Battle Fever J), and Yellow 4 (Bioman) also had permanent deaths. Granted they were replaced but it still stands that those characters were killed off.
I have the impression that with Jetman, they were well aware that age inclusivity and targeting EVERYONE was a smart strategy, (like the adult otaku community, and KEEPING the aging fans they already have once they outgrow the toy buying 6-12 age range.)
This is by far one of the best reviews of Super Sentai I had ever came across. You Sir, did your research and presentation is superb. I saw others but was not as good as yours. I saw Jetman for the most part and was pleased with it. I hope you do more reviews of Super Sentai because you have a knack for it. I was skeptical for the time but I forgot about the time as I was watching your video. Please keep up the good work and hope to see more reviews from you.
Hopefully you'll expand out to other toku shows not made by Inoue. While I enjoyed most of his stuff, there's plenty of other Sentai seasons that deserve some recognition.
There's another sequel to Jetman that came out not too long after it ended. It's a recap special of Jetman called Toei TV Hero Encyclopedia Vol. 2: Choujin Sentai Jetman
Just wanting to add that the ideas spawned from this show were clearly an influence on Sentai well beyond 1991. I'm currently finishing Zyuohger from 2016, not only there's a reference to Amemiya but there's shoujo-leaning stuff in there too, hell there's an entire episode of a child wishing to be a princess in search of her own prince. I had legitimately no idea the Maestro Inoue had such an everlasting impact on Sentai, even with me thinking he's the best toku writer of all times period.
I'm not sure if you know about this, but there's a short epilogue special for Jetman that takes place a few years after the series. It's considered canon to Jetman since it's mentioned that both Ryu and Kaori have a son named Gai after their departed teammate. It doesn't mention Yuki Gai's death aside from the flashback sequence but otherwise it's a good watch.
Gai is more of an omega male than alpha. Omega tends to go their own way without worrying about societal expectations, standards and living his own life. He's a lone wolf
And she died very early in the series. It's a mystery to most of us today. She quit or was fired under unknown reasons and was replaced by the archer Yellow 4.
Well, Jetman saved the Super Sentai franchise for a million reasons. Good that they took that gigantic risks and it paid off. I wonder if we have Power Rangers and still have Super Sentai if the 15th Sentai presentation wasn't Jetman.
I’ve been a Super Sentai fan since 1994 during the Saban domination at its ripest. I’ve seen the assorted 5 episodes of Jetman and couldn’t get into it. And as we speak today. No. The 3-5 characters are so annoying with the exception of Ako and Gai. I own the series on DVD and seen it again and still it’s not my favorite series.
And in the end Jetman doesn't even make it into my favorite seasons, it lands in about middle of all the seasons I have seen so far, I hated the Love Triangle stuff, yet enjoyed how it was handled in Faiz and Kiva. I didn't like White Swan, I only really liked Ako, though I enjoyed Gai. I enjoyed Grey, though not much of the other villains. I understand the whole sad writing, just didn't like how it was done. It's not even close to being disliked. It was just okay, some of my hated seasons are Carranger and a good amount of the Showa Era. Liveman being my favorite Showa and I enjoyed it more then Jetman.
You mean Japanese children none of the cut content and uncensored content would of been acceptable in any of the American adaptation dubb for a child age audienc meaning any one under 21 you were risking getting a scolding if Mon and dad caught you watching it. Death alone in the American dubbs of the good characters was almost never allowed an was nearly non existent even the non sentia good canon characters were rarely kill of like what zordon in the American adaptation of mega ranger and Magma defender were the last death of the good characters that really had any importance that were not already dead before series that we were allow to see die that were not cohearshed deaths aka the first pink ranger from lost galaxy.
Jetman is my favorite next to Bioman, especially as a big fan of G-Force or Gatchaman. I mean, if you're gonna ripoff another tokusatsu go big or go home. Ironically the least exciting for me are the mecha. They're so blocky and plain, especially compared to the previous series, in my opinion.
Personally, I think Jetman is WAY overrated. Is it good? Absolutely. But most of the story elements overstay their welcome. I don't want to watch 51 episodes of a love triangle that just goes back and forth and back and forth. I would argue that Liveman and Dairanger are the best sentai seasons.

Underrated comment
That's real deep
Why do you use fun fact?why not just make your statement.

Gai: Should I spoil my friends wedding by going to the hospital, or should I spoil it by dying in front of them? 🤔
🤣🤣🤣
I mean to be fair, if you know it’s a 8/10 death rate for yourself that actually IS a choice

Jetman is undoubtedly the greatest Sentai series of all time, every SS/PR fans might know this
Kiranger (Gorenger), Battle Cossack (Battle Fever J), and Yellow 4 (Bioman) also had permanent deaths. Granted they were replaced but it still stands that those characters were killed off.
Now you see one has to wonder how big the Gai x Ryu fanbase is because I can sense some housewives became fujoshi due to it.
Yuki Gai (Black Condor), he s a centre for the whole Chojin Sentai Jetman. When he die, the show end with him.
I have the impression that with Jetman, they were well aware that age inclusivity and targeting EVERYONE was a smart strategy, (like the adult otaku community, and KEEPING the aging fans they already have once they outgrow the toy buying 6-12 age range.)
Love seeing a new episode of history of super sentai

Jetman is my favorite Sentai of all time PERIOD. I adore the characters, the costumes, the mecha and the VILLIANS!
I had to stop after the spoiler at the middle 😢 But still, nice analysis. Thanks!

In BIOMAN Yellow 4 is another main roster that died.

Great Video ✌️
At least it’s not Birdemic Waves!
I'm more a Flashman and Maskman kind of guy. Jetman is cool too.
I love jetman. My favorite sentai.

Black Jet is a Sigma. The alpha is Red Jet.
“Dan Aykroyd lookin a$&.” Made me spit out my drink 😂

Dude a stab to the stomach is lethal :v
This tells me that Inuoe should only be taked to do something if it’s in need of saving. If that happens, he does not miss.
Great. Now I can't take "BIRDONIC WAVES (hawk screeching)" out of my brain😂.
gokaiger is top tier as well i hope you finished it by now
Would love to see a video on Changerion
At some point probably! Gonna do some rider first before closing out the Inoue Sentai Trilogy.
Very nice! I only recently discovered your channel but you make some great videos! Hope I'll be able to get around to Jetman some day.
Radiguet set the standards for villains in Japanese fiction, in my book, even though Bullet from Redo of Healer has surpassed Radiguet since.
