Coming from a growing up in a military family and background to where I am now I have never learned so much about leadership until listening to the podcasts here. I've been through on the job training and these videos have really helped me understand. Thank you Jocko for what you're doing keep up the great work!
My last assignment in the USAF was at Mountain Home AFB, known as the 366 Gunfighters. Col Ellis and Lance Sijan were assigned to that unit in Vietnam. Thank you for talking about Lance P. Sijan. My last year on active duty I was nominated for the Lance P. Sijan award for Leadership. It was an honor to be recognized in the honor of such a great man and the men that he served with.
Vietnam guys make the best guests, or maybe it was just the constellation of guys that have been on were so awesome that it seems that way but man this one was great once again.
Man got shot down over Vietnam, was taken POW for FIVE AND A HALF FUCKING YEARS, and when he finally got released, did he retire from the Air Force? Nope! He stayed in for many years more, finally attaining the rank of Colonel. What a mad man
I love it when they say i wasn't such a stud!!!! What a BS!!!!! When i was in 5th grade i was already competing in State Championship!!!!!! After that it just got better!!!!! Idk if it was hate of school or i just loved 2 do it 🎉🎉🎉
I remember when I was on the running team 1k times 10!!!! And we went to county championship!!!!! We got 9th of 10th place!!!!!!! But it was a blast!!!!!!!
My grandfather was robin olds, he died when i was a child and i never actually knew much about him just that he had been a pilot. Watching those dogfights shows though helped a bit and watching these pilots really gives me a great look at what being a pilot back then meant. I never would have been able to be one, I'm too big, bit it's still really cool.
I just made a comment about how some of what Lee was saying about the ineptness of the Leaders and Washington Politicians along with the "Wiz Kids" sounded very much like what your Grandfather the Great Gen Olds said on several occasions. I have read a lot about your Grandfather.. I probably know more about him than any retired enlisted Marine ever! LOL... Not sure if you have seen it or not but Ward Carroll (thats the name of his youtube channel) Ill link it here ua-cam.com/video/kWMYICWrFuw/v-deo.html has a great video about Gen Olds. My Daughter is an Air Force Tech Sgt and has written a paper on Robin Olds for a Non Commissioned Officer's course.
When I was a kid I read When Hell Was In Session,Jeremiah Denton’s account of the hanoi hilton, and I thought those pow’s were the bravest men of all time ,the torture they endured and their ability to communicate through the walls by tapping was amazing
Thanks for all the free content, knowledge and inspiration through the darkest and most painful of times in my life to keep going. And remind me that my problems aren't nearly as bad as they seem. @jockopodcast
How the mind works and the small but impactful way these brave men made light of their horrific imprisonment. “Scaled Victories!” Control what you can to stay positive . Strong willed minds and amazing men.
_Dobbins AFB_ … that brings back memories. I worked at the _Lockheed-Martin_ plant on that base. I was testing software for the C-130J at the same time they were developing the _F-22 Raptor_ in the same building and had the privilege of witnessing the *_first flight_* of the Raptor while I was there.
We make a few things, custom leather belts. Still have alot to learn in leather tooling. Got my industrial stitching machine,I have no idea what I'll be good at. I wear many hats. My friend that taught me how to make belts was a cowboy biker Vietnam Veteran. I really enjoyed the stories & interview.
Hearing the telegram sent a chill thru me. And a mix of emotions. Then realizing that was him, alive(!), next to you? OMG. A miracle. Now, I'll listen to the rest. 💓
Damn brother that letter at the beginning was a story on its own... thank you all for all you do and your time away from your loved ones for me and mine
Good morning Jacko podcast, please forgive the off-topic question, but have you covered before the mission the men and me by Peter blabber and if so which number podcast? Thank you
Jesus. He was in the same class as Lance Sajin?? For those of you who’ve never heard of Lance, I highly recommend you look up his story. Just un friggin believable.
Knowing the way broadly does not mean knowing in general, knowing the way broadly means you know everything about it... the full breadth. When you know a lot about something, you then start seeing instances of it in all that you do... like Mr. Miyagi telling Daniel to paint the fence.
I dont believe in the use of torture for any reason. Its the absolute worst thing you can do to another human being. I was very disappointed to learn that the US did the same thing in Guantanamo. I found that completely unacceptable.
Listened to all this podcast. This guys story in Vietnam albeit is horrific. Many Vietnamese civilians were wiped, war crimes were committed, the use of agent orange etc was deplorable. The US have a history of creativity and fighting wars that had nothing to do with them. War is young men dying and old men talking, it should say, 'old men profiting'. Just like this podcast is trying to do on all fronts.
I've just visited Hoa Lo prison (what remains of it, kept as a museum). As a former military pilot (same name, no relation!) the section on 1964-1972 is a grotesque distortion of what actually occurred there. The museum is quick to highlight the horrific treatment of the original inmates (Vietnamese political prisoners of the French), but shamelessly flips and represents US POW treatment as near idyllic....smiles, Christmas decorations, basketball etc. Zero mention or detail of the torture or privation that actually occurred. Having just re-listened to this postcast before I went in, the difference between how POW treatment is depicted vs reality is jarring and infuriating.
So you somehow believe you know more of John McCain’s experience and character than his fellow POW? Were you there with him with broken bones never properly reset, getting tortured for 5-1/2 years? Tell us your story hero.

@@alastor8091 Here's a suggestion. First, look it up, it's not hard. Secondly, see how the Ukraine war started (that might take a little time). After you do that you can then conclude if what I said was inaccurate. I am not going to do the leg work for you. Cheers

Leading with Honor! Col Lee Ellis. I'm honored to have met him again today.

His unit got rid of civilians. They weren't even fighting the people who attacked us. They protected the people who attacked us.
I just met him today. Great down to earth man. With almost a copious amount of humility and wisdom
Awesome show guys. Thanks again. We appreciate everything 👍

My wife’s grandfather is a Purple Heart Coast Guard Veteran from Vietnam, would be amazing if he could tell his story.
