Do you have any regrets about not upping the RAM? I’m on the fence about getting that same model or getting it with 64GB of Ram and maybe 2TB. I think even though the RAM upgrade is relatively inexpensive, even 48GB could be overkill for me.

Great insight! I currently have an M1 Max // 64GB for work, an M2 Max // 32GB for personal use and an M2 Air for Travel. All these machines are AMAZING for work. Mind you, I do have a Windows gaming rig, so all my gaming is done there. My M1 Max stays docked 24/7 for work and I have never had any issue with it. It's a Multitasking BEAST. My M2 Max has been super stable also and it works really well with all my emulators and such. Looking forward to testing some of these M3 Pro's and Max that we get for some of our employees. I might upgrade if it's worth the jump from my M1 Max.

I was fortunate about 3 months ago to get a new m1 max with 64gb memory. I have tried the upgraded models and unless you are starting the space shuttle. The m1 max was 2299 as Adorama was running a great deal. In my world which is graphic design, some animation and video editing and it is really good. Yes, the m3 is faster but for what I do the difference is not that big. With the m3 I think apple has made a conscience choice to make the max the true beast. The others are almost slower than the m2 which is weird but it seems like an apple marketing thingie. In the end you need to take what you do and base it on that and not benchmarks. If it works then it works.

So I made the switch from a Windows PC and bought my first Mac ever (16" M3 Pro with 18gb of ram) to use as my main editing machine. It was great but not flawless for 4k editing without proxies. For science I bought the M3 Max instead with the intention of returning one... and after my testing (which I put on my other channel TheSAHDStudio), the Max blew the doors off the Pro and and I returned it.
Now... as much as I love this thing, the price tag for the 16/40 48gb ram has me feeling a little sick to my stomach. I'm wondering just how much worse the M1 Max (with say, 32gb ram) would be vs this M3 Max. I have nothing to compare it to so I'd be curious what you have to say about the M1 Max vs the M3 Max. Would the M1 Max stutter at all during the editing process? Return the M3 Max and pocket THOUSANDS or suck it up and enjoy how amazing it is...

I love having it as a back up when I need my windows open and active at the same time. It basically does what a windows laptop does when snapping windows to the corners. Binned at 96GB feels like a smart choice. The full core model's arrangement of cpu/gpu/ram/bandwidth is kind of beautiful. But as good as 64GB sounds today (which is roughly the same price point as the 14core/96GB, whereas its 128GB upgrade means a new price bracket) RAM seems to be the wise thing to future-proof. External storage can be solved for later (sounds looks like you're already in a good place there 🙂) and it will be a while before applications really pressure the cpu/gpu for either of these maxes. But RAM? That always seems to be the thing that gets eaten up first.

Just on the two to the three years part, I bought a Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 on Black Friday in 2020... It had 64GBs of RAM and an i9-9880H. The RAM was DDR4 and we're now DDR5 and the i9 now would be only about as a regular M2 chip, this is 3 years.... Tech outdates fast.
To flip that argument, I've only had 1 Macbook Pro which was a 2011 15" (Late Oct) Quad Core, 16Gbs and it lasted me until 2018. (Albeit the graphics card failed twice.) That's 7 years...
So I would expect these new Macbooks to last at least 10 years.

I just care about the big bright display, audio drivers, battery life for a safe personal device.
Because of safety concerns even if I had M3 max 16cpu, 40gpu I will not use that for any thing heavy, all the so much performance would have been wasted. for 3d ar vr stuff I will get mac studio later.

Cool but the big question is how has this machine changed your workflow compared to the M1 Max? Based on what I’ve seen, not too much. Can’t see a reason why anyone with a M series chip should upgrade other than if they messed up with their SSD or RAM spec. Thanks for this. Great to see a post from someone who paid for and is using the M3 max as an everyday tool, and not just about ootb benchmarks. I feel like the 16" (binned or full) hits this sweet spot where you can use it for pretty much anything, by itself. As well as most workloads be it content, rendering, gaming, coding, or a zillion open browser tabs, it also looks future proof for all the ai agents we're going to see embedded into everything over the next few years that will be gpu, memory and bandwidth intensive. Sure, 16" is big but it can mean some folks won't must have that external monitor, so they'll get to reduce total cost. The chassis size has to help with thermals (great to hear the fans aren't spinning up for you). And the battery lifetime you're getting sounds amazing. Pricey and on the large side physically, but I feel like this max generation will give people 3-5 years of headroom before really needing to upgrade.
The only question-still happy with silver?

It seems to me that those who actually need the power of an M3 Max will actually want to upgrade the memory beyond 36 GB of RAM. Examples that I have read include batch editing of raw images, machine learning, data science, and even writing a symphony.

My MBP 16 inch M3 Max spec'ed with 128GB RAM is getting me through grad school. It's able to run a very specific Llama2 70b fine tuned LLM which provides me with quality verbiage and sentences I would not be able to write myself to get all my assignments done in time without eating into my mental health and sanity. Quality material I'm not able to generate through GPT4.0 and other popular LLM's online, I can get it when I run my preferred fine-tuned open source LLM on my M3 MAX because the LLM itself requires 70+ GB VRAM to even load and there is currently no other consumer grade machine outside for spending $30,000 on NVIDIA A100/H100 actual machine learning rig. Paying $5,000 to Apple beats paying NVIDIA $30,000.

I am on the fence about getting a Macbook 16, IMac, or 17-inch Windows I have 3 Apple products phone, a watch, and an iPad. However, windows give more gaming options if I want to try new games. I haven't used these Apple devices long not a big fan of Mac OS. The other big problem with getting locked into using all of Apple is the prices are nuts. Yes, they have good performance for a lot of things and are very efficient. Windows just gives you close for a reasonable amount of money.

I have the M1 Max 16 and I am just trying to figure out if they have solved the serious issue with how easy it is to embed/scratch dust into the screen. It also does a wild rainbow diffusion of sunlight across the screen. IMO whatever material they are using for the screen is a huge problem vs any other laptop I've used. I agree in general that the macbook is just wildly superior to other laptops other than this screen issue.

Curious to know; if you game like this, why use a Mac? Or even a Macbook for that matter? I have the M3 Pro and love it, but I have a proper PC for gaming. With the amount you spent on this, you could have easily gotten a 13900KS + 4090. You could literally play any game that exists on the highest possible settings. Not trying to be overly critical as I myself own a significant amount of Apple hardware.

I found the fan noise on the M3 Max 16 (same configuration as yours) to be too loud for my liking when doing even moderately intensive tasks. It didn't sound that far off my Lenovo gaming laptop under similar conditions. I have been much happier with the 14-inch M3 Pro. While not as outright fast as the Max, it is for all intents and purposes silent while performing the work that I require of it.

Your reviews have always been appreciated, especially since you've also covered the Dell XPS. Glad to see a review based on real world use and not pushing the absolute top specs for benchmarks. Using both Windows and MacOS for work, this is my first MacBook. Especially with holiday deals, the 16" M3 Max 14/30 seems to be the sweet spot as the M3 Pro downgraded components from the M2 Pro. The 16/40 Max models are said to have more fan noise and throttle more easily and are probably overkill for most people anyways.

I have a Lenovo Legion 7 pro with 64GB of ram and an RTX 4080. Beautiful 240hz screen. The batterly life makes it unusable. You might get 2.5 hours on battery gaming and the fans are so loud it sounds like a 747 taking off. It's just not even CLOSE to the quality of these machines. I don't touch my $3000 Legion at all unless I am gaming at my desk. That's it. Otherwise I am using the Macbook Pro and if I need something in Windows I just fire up a VM.
I've been a WIndows/IT guy for 30 years and I am moving over to these machines full-time. Other than gaming, they are better in ever single way.
