Why Did the Fiercest Tribe in Scotland Vanish?

- Around 2,000 years ago, the Picts were one of the toughest tribes in the northern regions of Britain. Eight hundred years later, they had vanished, leaving almost no trace.
From the Series: Mystic Britain: Lost Tribe of Scotland bitly.com/2ZzTO87
They simply relocated to Glasgow. There they divided themselves into two rival factions, Rangers and Celtic.

in case you are still wondering the Picts never disappeared they just gradually assimilated into Gaelic culture and language as the kingdom of dal riata to the west merged with Pictland
Teaser for a full episode bruh
One of the universities in Scotland was researching Pictish DNA. They certainly never went away but assimilated with Celtic groups so they are still here.
David Cameron (former British PM), James Cameron, Robert Carlisle, etc. all have that pointy-nosed, hawkish, brunet Pictish look. The Picts are still there. They just call themselves "Scottish" nowadays.
What I think is likely is that King Kenneth I united the Scots to the Picts and then made the culture primarily Scottish.
I always assumed the Celts were White until I read Geschichte Deutschen und Skythen (History of Germans and Scythians). Until then I had no idea they were Coloureds.
They were also mentioned in Mohren Bilder (Black Pictures).
Skin and hair color are actually the least important traits in determining what "racial" grouping one belongs to. In terms of Anthropometry alone, the Picts (Brythonic types) are actually much purer Caucasians than many of the blond (but snub-nosed) population of the British Isles. If one has seen (mutant) African albinos of the sub-Saharan regions, it would be noticed that despite their 'albino' skin and hair, they still retain their stereotypical African facial structures (e.g. broad, heavy jaw, broad, flat/snub nose, etc.). However, these traits are seen in many Europeans as well. For example, Steve Bannon would be very African-looking, if he was even slightly sun-tanned. By contrast, a Pictish-Brythonic type is usually dolichocephalic (long-headed and thin-faced) and leptorrhine (i.e. with thin, prominent nose) and thus very Caucasian-looking despite how "dark"/brunet they are. So a large percentage of Europeans (blond or not) would look like "albino Africans" when standing next to a thin-faced, pointy-nosed Pict/Briton.
@@AK-dd9od Furthermore, the law forbid people to marry someone with the same skin color.
Point blank! You can find that in King Ferdinandei Annales which he includes Geology of all Royals and why they exiled Hvite(Whites).
You never seemed to answer the question of what happened to them
You have to watch the hour long episode, this is just the teaser.

they intermarried with the Scots - traditionally picts would take the female last name where the scots carried on the male last name, the picts fought the scots and Norse raiders, in the long term the scots and picts became indistinguishable through intermarriage - the picts essentially are still here today through dna - they didn't disappear or die out - they simply were bred into with the Scots
My family has included the women's surnames as a middle name for a few generations that I know of. I think it's a good tradition. The side of my ancestry from the women is not ignored. Ross, Sutherland, Sangster, Anderson, Munro are the first that come to mind. No "Mac's" in the collection oddly enough.
Blended, rather than single malt, Scots.
It was more to do with their conversion from paganism to christianity over a couple of centuries.
Would that suggest why Campbell is actually a very popular name in Ireland, probably specific to Northern Ireland?

I’ll just explain it for people hoping to get an answer. In about the 9th century AD, after being terrorized by Vikings from all sides, the Picts (in the east) and Scots (in the west) who had been exchanging culture and kings for centuries, formed the Kingdom of Alba which later turned into Scotland after it incorporated the Britons of Strathclyde and the Angles of Lothian as well. There we go. Not that hard, is it?
Pictish King Bridei III and Northumbrian King Ecgfrith who met in battle in 685 were cousins, sharing Edwin of Northumbria as a grandfather.
Edwin was supposedly fostered by King Cadfan ap Iago in Wales as a child, and later spent time in exile in East Anglia under the protection of King Rædwald (probably the man buried at Sutton Hoo) as Æthelfrith, then King of Northumbria, wanted him dead as a potential rival claimant to the throne. When Anglia and Northumbria went to war, Rædwald won, installed Edwin as King, and Æthelfrith's sons went into exile in the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata, and in Pictland.
This one quick delve into history shows how the various Brittonic, Anglo-Saxon, Gaelic & Pictish kingdoms were closely connected, not strangers to one another.
The Picts didn't disappear from Scotland any more than the Mercians disappeared from what became England, they were just absorbed into a larger whole.
And the strange thing is that this is the scenario that has the most evidence and that is widely considered to be the most likely by those who study the subject. Yet YT is still full of “why did the mysterious Picts disappear.”
Picts in East?. Brochs in Glen Elg built by Picts in the West, or are you thinking east of Skye? The picts were here long before the vikings and Scotti tribes. They know hee haw about the Picts. They should ban twits like you off social media.
@@robw7676if that is the case, the pictish kingdom was far bigger than tbe dalrida kingdom. We also know the dalrida king killed the pict king at a banquet.

The Romans built a wall to keep the Picts out of the south. The Picts built ladders.
The romans were dumbfounded when they came to Scotland, seeing us ride about on horse ridden chariots and plaid warriors. The wall was the biggest engineering stone structure of all Rome's campaigns . Is there was nothing beyond the wall why build something so marvelous?
Not completely true. The romans built the wall to keep the tribes in the north of what is now England, from getting out and travelling north to get Pictish support against the romans.
And some became the first specialised pole vaulters known to the world outside Greece...they were Olympian standard...but after the Romans left...with no enemy to pole vault into...it took on the form of a sport... tossing logs up in the air...

Hardly ever talked about is that the name Briton and Pict are one and the same thing. Britain literally translates to Painted Land in proto-Welsh whereby Picti is Painted People in Latin. It seems evident from this linguistic split that the native Britons under Roman rule had ceased altogether the practice of body painting and tattooing.

Mysterious.... Stooped in legend... Heroism.... Sad and bad moments And moments of glory and unexpected invention.
What happened to the IX legion?
What happened to the picts?
The massacre of the families that invited them into their homes and let them sleep in their own beds, an occurrence so sad and outrages that it shocked even the worst of the english and Welsh.
So many excellent and exciting battles occurred in Scotland between Scots, the english, the Welsh.
So many loose ends.
So much mystery.
The cannibal family (you know the one I mean)
The novelty of Scottish royalty and the system of the clan of the Highlands.
A place for people to run and attempt to escape.
A place for people to run to and ending up dying from hypothermia.
Or visit one of their lovely pubs and get glassed in the face by a begbie lookalike. Some of the scot to scot, scot to Welsh battles were great.
I like your passion ,I hope someone finds the culture and language in a book in a lost tomb I think they are out there. To eavesdrop on their language and magically understand it.
To see what they looked like.
To witness the size of the caladoneian forest from above.
I had a book once that showed the original extent of the Caledonian forest and it covered 80% of Scotland before the first tribes began to clear it before others came.
England also was covered up to 80% in decidious and decidious/coniferous mix.
I would loved to have been invisible as a time traveller and eavesdrop on a conversation between two English villagers in say the 11th century.

England has lost so much wildlife as well.
We can stand in some places on the sides on hills and mountains and only imagine.

Picts never existed it was a roman term. They were a loose confederacy of peoples beyond Romes reach. The Scotti are originally from Greece not Ireland and are mentioned on a Roman map as the Scotta(sea farers). The Picts are really a mixture of Gordon Strachens great grandad and Susan Boyles left eyebrow.
It means painted people, but what they called themselves who knows but their artisry is of great skills
Thats quite a mix...accomplished footballers, singers and eyebrows...and probably able to dance the Hispana I think it's called...a Greek dance. Other links to Greece suggest they were among the first world class pole vault nations... this was not originally meant for Olympic games...but Dare games...when Picts would vault over the Roman Walls for a bet on how many Romans they could take out, before vaulting back over again. When the Romans left, life was boring for a while for the many skilled pole vaulters who had amassed around the Roman Walls...rich pickings could be made if you was handy with both pole and sword. Eventually, pole vaulting evolved into other forms of tossing logs...that was one day integrated into the Highland Games. The Picts and Scots then are deeply indebted to the Roman architects and brickies who built them those wonderful walls to practise vaulting over.
These Picts look like modern football players!
As the great Scottish writer/historian Nigel Tranter pointed out in his classic book The Story of Scotland, the Picts probably outnumbered the Gaels by 10 to 1 or even 15 to 1, so any idea of a Pictish wipeout was and is ludicrous. the Pictish Kingdoms in the North-East just got integrated with the new Scot's Kingdom from the West, the flat low lying plains on the Coast still being referred to as Fortriu (the name of a major Pict Kingdom) into the middle ages. Although they were integrated into the Kingdom the County of Moray, Banff and Western Aberdeenshire still held a separate identity up until the 13th Century, being referred to as rebellious Moravian's (Moravian being the old term for - man of Moray) and the northern counties were considered lawless, rebellious and treacherous in general
way into the 1400's, with other heights during the 15 and 1600's showing the land was still pretty chaotic. (One of the reasons there are so many Norman and Flemish descended family in the North-East, is that the early Scots Kings invited them to come and try pacify the lands.)
Also, the Picts never referred to themselves as Picts, they were not a unified people and were just generically the people of North-East Scotland, no one knows how they referred to themselves
because they didn't write much till later periods.
(look at traditional accounts of the Battle of Standard between Scotland and England circa 1130. It clearly refers to different ethnic groups within Scotland, Scots, Galwegians, Moravians, men of Lothian even noticeably separated from the other groups too. Essentially the people in different geographical regions of Scotland have kinda been divided in the same way as today. Just today they don't war with each other, speak mostly the same language and have similar cultures in general. Simply put it, Picts just became sheep-shaggers up in the North-East.)

They did not call themselves "Pictones' or Picts I believe. Fyfe and that region in the East was settled by the Trojans much earlier.
Israel !!!!!!
Och ye got me all mixed up the noo
I always assumed the Celts were White until I read Geschichte Deutschen und Skythen (History of Germans and Scythians). Until then I had no idea they were Coloureds.
They were also mentioned in Mohren Bilder (Black Pictures).
what
@@sully8317 Yep, that's a fact and wait until you learn what Santa Claus and Black Pete is all about.
It will make you step far away from religions.
Never went away - at the Clansman every night!!!!!!
Very Good!...
Probably aliens from outer space came and picked up the Picts, and moved them to another planet. The needed to have people who could live in a harsh climate, and not take any B.S. from any one else! Hey! It would make for a great movie or series!
See TRAN and Jannisaries by Jerry Pournell.
So what you're saying is that an alien culture came to earth to pick up some Picts. In short, they made a Pict pick up.
vikings killed their kings and the Picts assimilated with Alba, becoming the Scots
Always wondered if the swarthy, green-eyed streak in the hebrides and highlands is a genotypical trait of the Picts.
The hebrides and western highlands are culturally and genetically Gaelic so no
@@jgenard
Okay...
But is this based on academic research or personal experience with the people in question AND academic research?
That would be the northeast, Aberdeenshire , loads of green eyes here, including me!
@@jgenard you know the Gaelic people genotype has more capabilities to produce array of phenotypes then Germatic people who are the white people because they are the people who came up with the terms White and they come from Central Asia while the Gaelic people come from the Middle East which is North east Africa so they are not white people because all white people have to come from Germans now the Gaelic people are known to have some historical figures that came out with dark skin and different phenotype features then what they normally produce people who look black or African
@@zur2016 basically they’re black
They moved to Glasgow
😆🤣
The Picts mixed with the Scotti and are in the blood of many Scots today. The YDNA haplogroup R1b-L1335, which is a distant branch (son of) of the most prolific haplogroup in Ireland and Scotland R1b-L21, is said to be a Pictish haplogroup, and I think about 10%-15% of Scottish men today are a branch of this haplogroup.
I’m B-
Love how the hitchhiker is convinced he is pict. His family tree probably starts in Birmingham and never seen a pictish tribe 😂 considering when birth records began, he will never know if his ancestors were picts
We may not know why the Picts vanished, but we do no when. In 843, Kenneth mac Alpin, King of the Scotts, became king of the Picts, probably through matrilineal inheritance, and, apparently with out any particular fuss, the Picts and their language vanished without a trace.
Yes cos the scotti slaughtered them and anyone who didnt join them
I'm an Anglo-Celtic Australian! I 100% believe the Pictish still live within me 🇭🇲❤️🏴
Proud to be a celt..
The Picts and Roman times Celtic Britons both disappeared the only original British are the Welsh and Cornish.
The Picts did not disappear, they assimilated into Christianity and left the old ways behind to follow one god and not multiple gods.
@@garymcatear822 ues but their language got wiped out , thats what they're meaning.
@@janetgallacher7552 My comment was directed at the guy in this thread in response to what he said in his comment, not what was talked about in the video. I have Pict DNA as well as most indiginous Scots...in fact many people around the world have some Pict DNA of Scottish heritage...there are even millions of English people who have Pict DNA. And the language didn't get wiped out, there are still doric speakers in Scotland today in the very north east of Scotland.
They became the Chattons.

Like my family, a bunch of borderers. Had to be tough, and still carries on. Ask my mom if you dare.

They didn’t disappear they are in our DNA. I am from the UK, my mum is Southern French and my dad’s family are all from Scotland, my gran is a tough Glaswegian woman named Angus Morag McKay (not the most beautiful name haha) very Celtic.
My DNA test confirmed I have 49% Scottish (DNA concentrated in the Isle of Sky) and 51% Southern/Northwestern Europe.
I know I am descended from them, I can just feel it. I am very kind to all people who show respect to me and I am happy-go-lucky but love and train in boxing/ combat sports, I am
ready for war always and can get angry very quickly just like my gran.😅
Your gran is named Angus?

No, I'm saying if you don't know the difference between 'your' and 'you're', you're not worth arguing with.
They became Russians.
Do you think that the early Picts may have migrated to NZ? Early polynesian history records fair skin tattooed tribes already living in New Zealand, along with many other indigenous tribes and not just early Maori people. Our traditional tattoos have similar designs that could be of celtic origins and other mixture of culture over the centuries. See "Skeletons in the Cupboard"
I've heard this too. In the mountains of NZ, communities of blonde ginger green eyed people said to be the oldest known people there. Also has one of the densest populations of negative blood types.

This is a terrible telling and lack of evidence to describe history.
Poor audio quality. The volume fluttered in and out. Sometimes, it went garbled then became clear.

Saying the Picts fought off the Romans, rather than saying that the area the Picts inhabited was so far from Rome and fairly uninteresting to the Romans was fairly strange, to be honest.
Let’s be honest your Scottish and want to find out more about your roots (I am)
I do but I already know I'm a bit German
