Paint has many different meanings and uses, for one example painting yourself before going into battle helps you to be identified by your fellow Warriors so you are not mistaken for the enemy. And there are also ceremonial reasons resons to paint yourself as well.
Pictish place names have a great similarly to Welsh - this makes sense because both languages are descended from the common linguistic language of common Brythonic.
In the Welsh tradition it was the Scotti from Ireland who came to main land Prydain Britannia and it was the Scotti who asked for Welsh Brythonic Celtic wives. In fact if you look at the region of Pictland it is covered in Welsh Brythonic Celtic names and river names making the Picts Brythonic Celts. a Welsh archaeologist put this forward as it was pretty obvious from the local names which most others ignore because they do not know.

My last name is McCulley and I was born in Texas. It's amazing how far folks have traveled in the past. We come from some tough people.
Pioneers and adventurers.
That's why _Tartan Week_ is celebrated in the US, as a way of saying thanks to the Scots who contributed so much to their adopted country, in the New World.
It's also a fact that the English ruling class don't advertise this news, in Scotland.
Can't have the colonised developing a sense of pride.
I appreciate all the uphill trekking to fill this video. Your stories are both informative and entertaining. I am a loyal subscriber and trying to buy you a couple coffees. Cheers
What an awesome episode.
Welsh person here of Manx and Scottish ancestry on my fathers side. According to a DNA test I did I have ancient Pict DNA 🧬❤
The way you described the Picts as a unified nonhomogeneous group of people sounds a lot like modern countries today. Governments change, but people are people and always will be for good and bad.
I suppose so
As a middel school Belgian student, i was doing research on Kelpies for a presentation. I came across the Picts and thought there might be a connection. I didn't find what i was looking for but this was super informative, in the end i completely forgot what i came for and watched the entire video out of pure interest. I sure will be watching more! it really peaked my interest in the Scottish history! thanks!
I’m an American from Yorkshire and Scotts Irish heritage. I found out I have DNA from Robert the Bruce! I love to hear you “ tell a story”! Your lovely and I can’t get enough! I listen as I cook! Thank you for being you!❤️
Your something else my son
I can’t believe you haven’t been considered for next in line to the throne!
Thank you for sharing I never heard of the pics I knew about others
I watched a BBC programme recently where new archaeological discoveries in Pictish dwellings in the North pointed to a sophisticated civilisation with many objects that indicate their inclusion in much more international trade and far flung cultural exchanges than had previously been thought.
Great, thought provoking video, and I loved the Nedius Plebious Glesgae diatribe no doubt from a compemporary edition of Abainn Bhaile-mòr.
We were networking, going back thousands of years, the seas being the obvious routes, across most of the planet.
Absolutely love these videos, Bruce. You're like the Scottish LeVar Burton, always telling captivating and educational stories. I very much appreciate your work and humor. Slàinte mhath mo charaid.
Dammit! Now I have to find out who LeVar Burton is
@@ScotlandHistoryTours lol, I grew up with him on a program he hosted called Reading Rainbow. Each episode revolved around a particular story, and he would visit places related to said story. The show would also focus on history and culture as well. It's a pretty fair comparison lol
I'd like to have a time machine and see that hill when it was full of houses (and take photos, obviously 😁) Thanks Bruce!, the drone video is amazing
You and me both!
Been waiting patiently on this episode. Great work as usual mate
Is it just me, or does that Hill fort look like all the walls were blown outward until no stone was affixed to another from the air? You can see the denser concentration where the residence was. The long pile where the donjon fell, the gatehouse, even the gap in the rubble where a breach would be for someone to enter to destroy it? Take Warwick Castle and put it on top of a hill and then blow it up like a Lego construction with a stick of dynamite. It would look the same!
Are you saying that some Chinese visitors had an accident with their gunpowder?
No, because there is no crater. Just everything collapsed outward as if blown apart.
As per usual Bruce another fantastic video on a people that we know next to nothing about. No written record's no official language left behind. They are an enigma in themselves. Great job on this epoch in history 👏
Great video Bruce thanks a huge topic with many stories. Picts and Scots mergers through the Breadalbane District and Tay valley. 👏🏼 the Heart of Caledonia 🏴
Caledonians brittonic celts
Scots goidelics celts
I like all your videos. You are telling very interesting things without claiming to have the entire truth.
Anybody that says all Scotsmen can do an Irish accent are speaking through their bunnet!
😂
Poor King Kenny Dalglish was always going into the ref s book due to ...accent difficulties...whereas Graham Souness could charm the refs with his best Sean Connery / Edinburgh accent ,YNWA...best wishes from the wirral..E
You are an absolute legend!! We should have been taught all this in School.
Maybe in the next life
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Keep up the good work m8!! Educating us all! Love it!
I was told that the Romans conquered the entire known world, but built a wall (Hadrian's Wall) to avoid dealing with the Picts.
No far wrong
I love his history lessons on Scotland.
Another great video as always Bruce, love learning about the Picts! Was also wondering if you have any videos out about John Muir, or anything in the works? Would be great to hear more about his story and how he became such an influential figure on natural conservation in the states
Not yet. He is on a long list though
Grand, will keep an eye out for it!
It's discoveries like this that make me really miss my dad. He was VERY interested in Scottish history (his last name being Tays, we thought we came from the area of the Tay River. We DO have some Scottish relationships, but the Tays we come from are from Ireland.
ANYWAY...while enjoying this video, I realized I felt sad because my dad isn't here to share this with...he'd have been delighted at the presentation and the humor therein.
Aye The Tay runs through my town
@@ScotlandHistoryTours There have been many thoughts as to the etymology of the name Tay. One thought it was from the latin "tacitus" - meaning quiet. Tays??? Quiet?????
I wasn't called "Terrie the terrible talkative termite" for being quiet!!!
Thanks for the reply...I have a couple of videos you mentioned on my list, so I'll watch them soon.
Turns out per a DNA test I am more Scottish than anything else. Didn't even know we had any Scottish ancestry. I am excited to learn about Scottish history.
Stick wi me Cory. We'll ride that rollercoaster
From which we can surmise...there's hope for you, yet. 😉😂
I've always heard the word painted people from my mother ..years ago as a kid in the 80s ..was the first a heard of the pics
Great video as always Bruce. I always thought my surname was Celtic recently however I’ve been told it’s Pictish Scottish. Whatever, it’s Scottish and that’s what matters to me.
It could be Irish.
@@johnpatrick5307 yes it could, but usually the Irish form of the name is spelt FindlEy. I’m told this is because of the different forms of Gaelic between Ireland and Scotland. Interesting!
@@peterfindlay2756
Irishorigenes has 25 Findlays in Dublin, so that can't be true.
@@johnpatrick5307 Well I'm no expert I only repeated what I had been told. As far as I know I do have Scottish ancestors, but no Irish
@@peterfindlay2756
44% of Scottish DNA is Irish.
You might have more recent Irish immigrants too.
Wonderful as always. Can't wait to travel Again
Absolutely love your content...
When are you going to do a piece on
THE NAC MAC FEEGLE?
you know the blue skinned pictsies..
Gets my vote!!
I'm sure Rob will grant an interview if you have a couple of bottles of Sheep Liniment on hand. 😁
Always loved Scotland and it’s people but only thought I was Irish. Recently found out that I am a Fuerguson. Sending greetings from a long lost American cousin. Hope to return soon to Edinburg.
Fascinating! Of course, history is recorded by those who have writing. We own much to the Celtic monks who did write down early myths and oral histories with their own slant! Thank you for making this video and sharing!
We also have contemporary writers, throughout Europe and throughout history, detailing our achievements and idiosyncracities.
Bruce, My family blood line goes back to King MacAedain King of Picts. That line goes down to King Robert II King of Scotland and King William the Lion of Bellemont Scotland. Another line goes to Robert the Bruce and yet another to Henry III King of England. I am very much enjoying the knowledge that you are passing on to us mere mortals..........Regards, Rick
I've heard 'Picts' but never really had a clue what (or who) it meant. Celts? Vikings? Norsemen? The more I learn, the more I want to know. And one thing I'm finding out is: to define what time period we are talking about. And who is telling the story. As we know, the winners write history.
I'm also realizing where some of the stereotypes I'm familiar with as an American are coming from.
Thanks for the education
Wait until you start breaking each of those up. The Gauls. Britons. Geates. Danes. Makes your head spin.
It was a Roman term, Picti or Pictii, describing a people they encountered in Northern Scotland, seemingly insular from all other groups.
