So thrilled you selected the Alfie books. They are our family's favourite -and I have 3 kids in their 20s! We call putting shoes/boots on the wrong feet 'doing an Alfie'. And we named our daughter Annie Rose, so you can tell we are big fans.

I love this list. As you were going through them, I recognized many of the titles. I felt an instant connection to my childhood; had the privilege to have listened to most of them. One of my favorites: The Little House. When my daughter was born, I had to search many libraries to find it. At our local library, I recommended it for a story read aloud. It was an instant hit. The entire audience loved it.

Thank you for this. I learned about some new titles I'd never heard of before. I recommend the list of picture books used in the Five in a Row curriculum as well.

I would love to add a few more favorites from our family to this community. Owen, Grandpa and Bo, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, I Love You So by Marianne Richmond, & Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.

As you were telling these, I was reminded of the Hairy McClary (from Donaldson’s Dairy) books by Lynley Dodd. My girls know them almost by heart - fabulous rhymes and great for vocabulary! And very sweet drawings and stories!

Thank you for the list. Some are familiar and I'm excited to try the new ones. As the mom of a coloured child, I often am looking for books that show representation as well. I'm finding this difficult with some of the classics I love and still share with my toddler. I was hoping you can share some books that show more representation.

I'm glad you pointed out about the Curious George knockoffs, although they can be good too. We have some board book ones for the little kids that simplify the original books. We do also have Curious George Rides a Bike. This is the one with the paper boat instructions!

8:30. I had heard of Make Way for Ducklings but never the author until we did Before Five In a Row. My kids love Blueberries for Sal, and my older daughter enjoyed One Morning in Maine which follows Sal's family years later. Make Way for Ducklings has some cool stuff, but I've never bought it because I don't think my husband would approve. As I recall, the father duck just randomly leaves the family for awhile, as if he isn't very involved in raising the ducklings

I have to agree with this list and with your curious George assessment. We have ALL the Curious George books and I simply cannot read the newer ones he didn't write. I cringe when my kids grab them. Thankfully, they love the anthology with only original stories (including where he takes a job and rides a bike) and I don't mind reading those as much.

First, I would love to share how much love and appreciation we have for Mrs. Shafer! We are praying for you, sister!
I am seeking a poetry collection for my child, perhaps illustrated. Has the SCM ever given any recommendations regarding poetry for children?

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason  29 днів тому +1

Thank you for your prayers and kind words!
SCM's recommendations for poetry depend on the age of your children. In the early years (before six), we recommend: “My Little Book of Poems” by Rebecca Heller, “When We Were Very Young” by A. A. Milne, and “Now We Are Six,” by A. A. Milne.
In first grade and beyond, we recommend that you incorporate poetry study as part of your homeschooling lessons in accordance with Charlotte Mason's recommendations. Here is a helpful blogpost that gives an overview of this.
      simplycharlottemason.com/planning/curriculum-guide/poetry/
SCM has a resource for poetry study called "Enjoy the Poems of...." There are several versions of this resource each one will give you a living biography for the poet as well as a selection of their works.
      simplycharlottemason.com/store/enjoy-the-poems/
"Favorite Poems Old and New" by Helen Farris is a resource that SCM recommends for children to go along with many of the living science studies that are offered. You can see some additional volumes of poetry that are recommended by SCM on the CM Organizer's Bookfinder feature.

    Hello, it's me again! 😂
My daughter has LOVED your suggestion regarding early poetry, and so have her daddy and I. Thank you so much!
Would you all happen to have any suggestions regarding picture books about courage? Any search I make only returns books with post-modern agendas that do not reflect truth, goodness, or beauty.
Sadly, I don't have any recollection of being read to as a child or reading many picture books. So when I find resources like SCM, I'm "greedy" for more. Haha
Thank you as always! No obligation to reply at all, let alone speedily. God bless you all!

So glad that you have all enjoyed the poetry recommendations!
A few picture books that you may enjoy that incorporate the theme of courage are "Children of the Northlights" and "Katje the Windmill Cat."
We are always happy to provide book recommendations, so keep asking questions as you have them! Here are a few other great resources for finding books.
The CM Organizer's Bookfinder feature has a search tool that you can use to search by topic and grade level. Titles followed by [SCM] are recommended by SCM and titles without this designation have been added by other homeschooling families.

This book list of favorite read alouds for preschool and kindergarten has picture books and chapter books. Many children beyond this age level will continue to enjoy these quality living books, however it is a great list to work off of when you are looking to read good quality books to your young children. Many of these books can be found at the library!

We found "The Journey That Saved Curious George" at a local thrift shop last year. The kiddos loved learning about the Rey's pet chimpanzees and Fifi.
