Filmed in 1995, this documentary is a nostalgiac look at the end of steam trains in India.
The film covers many facets of trains in India including the atmosphere of a second-class compartment, the luxury of the Palace on Wheels, the madness of a train pulling into a station as coolies jostle for an attempt to carry passengers' baggage, the role of the station masters, even a look at the legendary Toy Train of Darjeeling and a miniature train that runs on a maharaja's tabletop bearing decanters to dinner guests.
There is a strong emphasis on the emotional value of the railway system to its passengers and employees. You will be surprised by how antique and manually operated the system was in 1995.
This film is especially recommended for train buffs and those interested in travel to India. It gives a good feel of what it must be like to be there.

This was a documentary made by NGC in 1995. Watched this documentary as a kid in 1996 at the age of 10. I'm 35 now.
India has changed and so has our lives.

Thank You National Geographic for making this I love how this realy shows the feeling of railroad men My Name is Frank Coye and I am from the USA and I am train men on the DL&W RailRoad in pennsylvania and this shows how railroad men love the steam locomotive no matter where your from or what country your from we all love steam am im happy that our railroad still uses mail line steam.
I remember when my father (a steam engine fireman) came home with tears when steam engines are abandoned and so now am not control my tears...Salute to The Great Indian Railways which has excellent track record for 160 years..Thank you NGC for such a awesome documentary on steam engine trains...

I request our Indian Railway to start few tourist route with steam engines.And veteran Steam engine drivers and staffs may be reemployed as they loved their steam engine like their sons
When my son was 5 years old he was watching this video all day for weeks! Got me hooked too.That was 20 years ago.Im so glad I have found this documentary again😃

The documentary shows Indian railways and economy back in 70s & 80s. Good recall of how as a child i have seen and traveled in train. Things are far better than how its showed. No more snakes for entertainment :)
Not only is this the best video travelogue I've ever seen, I suspect that it's one of the best National Geographic productions of any kind. The photography is absolutely breathtaking in its detail - just as good as the still images you'll find in the magazine. Linda Hunt's narration occasionally crosses the line into pomposity but is more often poetic and affecting. And the crew takes you places that only the most intrepid traveler would ever make it to on their own.
i have and still do weep when i watch this. am a heavy equipment mechanic and,call me an old fool, but believe machinery has soul. and the old steam machinery seem to me, the queens of the equipment graveyards
i've watched numerous documentaries about the great indian railways but this one is the best.

As a Canadian, it truly breaks my heart to see these old "iron horses" being treated like garbage when they in their prime and youth were treated so reverently and with so much respect. So sad. These great iron elephants of india are gone and so too have the great Chinese iron dragons. It is so sad that today's generations and the generations of the future will no longer be able to bear witness to the sights, the sounds and the majesty of a live steam locomotive. The hissing and panting of escaping steam; the spinning wheels and gnashing rods; the throaty roar of the whistle and the rhythm of the engine's chuffs as she thunders on down the line, with clouds of white smoke and steam swirling around her like some mystical goddess. Hopefully, some of these grand old ladies will be restored to operable condition and will dazzle and awe the youth of today and tomorrow. And to the railwaymen who helped maintain, restore and operate these beautiful behemoths, I thank you for your hard work, your dedication, your courage and your sacrifice to being the custodians of these iron horses. May you always be remembered and honoured.
I still remember how my dad used to give me all his note book to write about the railway engine today it brought me tears looking at the indian trains.
Indian Railways is one of the most amazing institutions in India. I am a lifelong admirer of Indian Railways. The steam locomotives in India were very very dear to my heart. It was my wonderful father who introduced me to the beauty of the huge, majestic steam locomotives in India. That era may be gone, but it will never be forgotten.

took a 15 hour train ride from Mumbai to colva and it was amazing, as a British person i felt a connection, this is a country with true potential !
The best documentary i've ever seen. The last part just makes my eyes wet every time i watch it. Indian government should put all the remaining steam locomotives if any, outside each railway station to showcase an era of the great indian railways. It's an integral part of the indian railway history.

Our Indian railways should run steam locomotives in few tourist spots as it can fetch its operating expenses.(lakhs of steam engine lovers are there).Few countries still.runs steam engine even now
I am very glad that I watched "The Great Indian Railways" well done National Geographic. I did not have much time for the people of India because I thought I had nothing in common with them "but" it turns out that I do and that is the love of steam engines as the Indian people call them "The Black Beauties". This presentation was was very inspiring , well done National Geographic and thank you.

As a salesman i traveled on all these routes for 10 years...except the fancy one...now as an old man i still remember those days...the stink from the toilets..the camaraderie among the travelers...the sharing of food....the wonderful women in saris looking evergreen in them...the handicapped beggars...the child singers...the sweeper boys...the horrible food...the millions of small stations...the landscapes that flowed by effortlessly...the good, bad , ugly ticket inspectors ...and many many more ---it made me a MAN...Thank you Indian Rail!!!!
Really heart touching..... Travelled for the last time alone on this black beauty in the year 1995 when i was 14 yrs old...... Feeling sad watching this episode..... But every one has to die one day.... Even me too will perish some day
The Great Indian Railways..I love this documentary. It shows how people get connected to their occupation. Very Emotional. People had to change with time. It does not mean to forget the past. Jai Hind!

I just love the way they run the railway the old system runs well and the people who look after it they are just amazing . They get paid pennies but they love the railway they grow up with it and so did their fathers and grandfathers and most of all these people always smile .

Amazing story. An era ended with the end of steam locomotives. I am extremely proud to be a son of a railway employee who knowingly or unknowlingly touches the hearts of many everyday. I dont know what will he be feeling when he will retire. He has given 34 years to our lovely indian railway. Thanks for this post.

Very very sad to watch'the great Indian Railway Steem engine.it was a beautiful memories of my child hood days. I travelled many Times from Mysur to Ramanagar and Bangaluru it was a golden time still the Steem loco inmy memmorie book.unfourtunetlly we lost now my eyes are tearing.lostely I thanked to the great Indian Railway and beautiful picture brought to people of Indians Very very thaks to National Geographic channel I loved a lot and tear ful send off.👍👍😭❤️

I certainly do not remember when was the last time I cried while watching a documentary on Trains. I guess by the time I was born, they had already phased out the steam engines. This was like reliving those stories of the steam I have grown up listening to from my father and grandfather.

Indian railways were formed under the british era and I thank them for taking metre gauge locomotives to extreme remote corners in india like the Lumding Silchar railway line where the meter gauge is still in service...Sadly the gauge conversion to broad gauge to meter gauge could never be completed in the past 20 yrs..
After the ongoing mega block, hopefully, the BG line will be operational from Mar 2015. The pace of work for gauge conversion is running at a phenomenal speed.

@ 16:22 Britishers gave us railways, LOL agree but they had to build it to carry away all the ornaments, gold, jewelry, spices. In return they have taken India's tremendous wealth.
watched this in 2015 almost 20 years after the documentary had been canned. Have grown up in India watching those black beauties or Iron horses chug by. Very nostalgic and moving especially when those beauties were being brought down. Excellent job done by National Geographic and this will remain forever
Best ever documentary on Indian Railways by NGC,even a person who is not a rail fan will fall in love with the railways after watching this. This just gave me goosebumps and made my eyes wet.

It's the most touching documentary I ever watched. It's a memory of a era of India, also a memory for Britain, of cause for all mainkind. It's luckly there is a steam locomotive reserved in Dajiling. Someday we can travel by this line.

This is an almost Two hour 1995 documentary in English about the epic British Indian Railways.
This is an incredible documentary more like a film and a very entertaining and exciting audio-book too covering every aspect of the British India Railway and the Indian Sub-Continent. A history book, a novel, a story and a documentary with beautiful images and sounds.
These are the Steam trains of the Victorian Era and Boiler Age of Steam- Power, not the diesel trains of the Petroleum Age or the Electric trains of the Electric age.

Grew up with the Steam Monsters, wish our next generation had the same luck. But, alas will watch them only in documentaries & videos.

Since my childhood I have been fascinated by these Steam Engines. I have seen a lot of such Black Beauties in Uttar Railway (both in Meter Gauge and Wide Gauge) during my stay in Uttar Pradesh from 1978 to 1995.
The Documentary has been made with great care and emotions.
The Scene of dismantling the Fuselage of the Engines after the bidding is really heart breaking.
I really miss those Black Beauties and even my childhood.

Nostalgia is something unique feeling attached to each generation. Those were very chaotic time too in a very many ways. Things have changed for better certainly in terms of passenger comfort, convenience, reliability as well trip enjoyment.
I am so Happy that I don't have any word to say. Indian railways are doing very well. Hope to see some more new action on IR like introducing bullet train and also more cool stuffs for fellow passengers (PAX). my Best regards to everyone ........Truly Indian Shibalik Choudhury.
