CASH GRAB: Feds seize billions, rarely prosecute air travelers in civil asset forfeiture cases

- One thing is clear from our Cash Grab investigation: do not fly with cash. Regardless of the amount.
Although it's perfectly legal to fly domestically with even $1M in your bag, the government is seizing cash and accusing people of being connected to criminal activity. The thing is--under civil asset forfeiture the government doesn't have to prove it.

This is what you call journalism or news reporting. Every single clip I’ve watched featuring this journalist is incredibly good and interesting.
You got that right Keith, I have been following Jody for a couple years now, he is absolutely top notch and the best in the country!
Like reporting on this will change anything while the crooks control the courts. 🧐Please! Stop! There is a thing called controlled opposition. 🤔 Not calling out Jody. Just updating the good people as to what they have to learn to spot.
The Clown News Network, aka CNN and MSNBC should take notes and do their dang jobs! Those people over there made the career of journalists a joke. Glad to see someone taking pride in their work and exposing REAL news! 👏🏼
The cop should be fired.
He won't be fired, he's making money for his boss. This is easy money for the government and will continue until SCOTUS steps in. The government will keep pretending they are fighting crime as long as they can get away with it. The money is too good consider whether it's legal or moral.
A majority of my transactions around the country is done in cash. This is how I get the best deals when purchasing and negotiating. To thwart off government thieves I travel with an average of $3500.00 in cash and bank cashiers checks of up to $150,000.00 and my cellphone in my front pocket streaming to my server. I have been asked many of times at security checkpoints, "are you traveling with any large sums of cash?". I always reply with. "do you mean am I traveling with $10,000 or more in cash?". When I get to my destination, I stop at the closest bank and cash my checks for cash. Been doing this for twenty years and haven't been robbed by oath breaking tyrants yet. Just a little tip...😊
I wonder how much it's going to take for the people to wake up and start fighting back against the evil people who are in charge
Most never will. They will whine about it...then comply. The government knows this.
Of course TSA says it's ok to fly with cash... if they didn't, people wouldn't do it!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER consent to a search!!!
Can you deny search at airport? Serious question.
Regardless I know what you're saying about don't consent to searches
@@padkirsch They'll almost certainly search you anyway, but it only helps them steal your money if you consent to the search.
@@LogicBob I definitely agree! Definitely don't consent to any search. I feel like they don't follow the law though
@@padkirsch You can deny search but they will deny you entry. TSA, city, state and Fed are all on this and each gets a cut of the proceeds. Cash in luggage show up differently under X-ray and TSA likely alert the agents who to rob after they pass check point.
TSA is going to get their cut of the stolen money! Theft with a badge!
They’ve been stealing all along . Despicable.
Dog is sniffing is worthless. Over 85% wrong now proven by cops body cams on traffic stops. The person giving tip gets 10% reward
They usually instruct them to hit.
5:45 talk about overstepping and abuse of power - Good job again Jody exposing the corruption that goes unchecked daily
Lesson learned, we can no longer travel freely with a large amount of money in the United States.
Yep or else the government will decide to violate your 4th amendment and commit robbery.
No worry they can !
Any amount of money at all. The average amount seized (at least at the roadside, I’d imagine it’s higher in airports) is a couple hundred bucks.
Wake up America
Wake up to what? What are we sleeping through?
@@kenthazara5477,,, Our rights are being trampled on by the people that we elect and we pay.
Can you seriously tell me you have not been seeing this?
@@kenthazara5477 so many lies and deception, like the c.vid scam.
@@kenthazara5477 are you blind?
@@Mr_Nobody913 Near-sighted.
This is unconstitutional.
This is why I dont fly.
I've flown only a few times and let me just say, the security from my experience was laughably bad. Incompetence at the highest level married with greed and abuse of power. All of it in the name of "safety and security".
Right... Stealing all of my cash as a teenager makes me feel really safe.
Thankfully I only had 50ish bucks so it was no big deal. I know that we changed the return flight though and paid extra...
The return flight was a private airliner so, needless to say, I was not accosted by thieving piles of trash when I boarded.
Modern airlines are beyond stupidity.
Detain people for alcohol to sell it to them on the plane after you've stolen their stuff. Then, tell people to maintain "social distancing" and then be crammed into tiny seats like sardines...
IDIOCRACY
They will get you on the road too.
seems to be a stealing racket and they don't intend to stop
6:18 Jody, the appropriate question at this point is "Your rules tell you large amounts of money is not illegal. Why then do you continue to label it suspicious?"
Accusing somebody of an offense they are not CHARGED with by law, such as 'drugs' is itself a criminal offence. This is known as libel, slander, and defamatory - and when used in combination with theft it's know as financial fraud. Nobody should ever have to explain that they didn't commit something there is NO evidence or charges, of. THAT'S 'the law'.
Merica remember?
The letter informing- of drug related suspicions- is the equivalent of
“Stop resisting” it’s an insult added to injury!!
The fact that - TSA tipped off another dept. to steal travelers possessions
(Ca$h) is “Criminal”?
This has to stop. I command, demand, and order this to stop being allowed to happen, taking money from people who have not committed a crime.
They won’t, they long to violate amendments and especially the 4th amendment. They love not acknowledging our rights and are always trying to take it away. Second amendment, fourth amendment, first amendment, all trying to be taken.
Federal agencies and law enforcement do not actually operate to protect or enforce the law, they merely exist to generate revenue for the state.
Its called "racketeering"
Exactly invent unproven crimes create the ruse to justify and fund all their BS jobs , all a giant scam .
Do they get kick backs ?
Jody is such an amazing reporter. I've been following him for a few years. Invaluable to all of us.
never carry a large amount of cash from anywhere always travelers check. when the government takes that all you have to do is make a call and cancel them. can't use them without you.
Yeah then there is a paper trail and he can't hide it from his ex wife. 🙄
it’s 2021… this is what crypto is for…. just put that money in a crypto account and no one can get it
All money has traces of drugs on them.
I just want to comment again and say that the TSA need to be held to a far higher level of accountability.
Any money found illegally seized should be returned and compensated 10% out of TSA pension funds...
So, what happens to the money? Who gets to keep/spend it?
Wat u think
This is really excellent reporting, thank you for bringing light to such a clear violation of civil liberties.
Poor James. This is so corrupt!
This is what the American government calls, "the American dream",
As a Canadian I have to ask how the hell do they get away with this? They would never get away with that here. Any kind of " Proceeds of Crime " they have to prove in front of a Judge before they can seize it with out giving it back. They can temporarily freeze the cash or assets but if they can't prove any of it was the proceeds of crime beyond a reasonable doubt they have to give it back. Isn't America supposed to have all these constitutional rights to prevent this?
They get away with it because people are too scared.
This has been happening forever
@Joe Blow Bingo!
The same way they can get away with invading another country. They're scumbags.
It’s called civil forfeiture here. Only in America
Never consent to a search!!!
Jody Barr, thanks for getting the facts out there. I think you're one of the few real journalists out there today!
Jody always does good work.
They saw it and knew they could keep it. Period.
One of the best I've seen of yours, you rocked it Jody! One day you'll be national.
As any US dollars never been in contact with narcotic substances.
Only in 🇺🇸
That $27,000 that this gentleman had was after tax money, so it is worth considerably more.
These seizures are UnConstitutional and believe it must be stopped immediately! I would be in jail if I was this man! I would fight to my death and let my family sue these stupid bastards and make this illegal! We don’t need enemies, because law abiding citizens have to constantly fight a corrupt government!
Keep calling out the corruption in TSA
You take out that much money from a bank. Then buy a airplane ticket. Red flag
What's next? You can't keep cash in your house.
I’m from Los Angeles and I subscribed since his journalism is great
Why do they get to keep it??? If it's earned illegally then why should ANYONE get to keep it???????
The police just did this to me while driving in my car…No drugs nothing illegal besides having cash. The worst thing about it is that I was also arrested and charged for money laundering without any evidence or narcotics and seized my money. I had to also pay to bail out!
I kept hearing the word "seizure", suggesting it's a legal, justifiable action. The correct words should be taking or stealing. Also, the word forfeiture is being misused based on the definition of that word.
Do NOT travel with Cash.. EVER! I wouldn't carry a dime over 100 bucks
Outstanding reporting Mr. Barr.
How does this compare to the amount of money that state governments take under civil asset forfeiture?
I strap my paper money in my cross body bag if I fly. Now the Sheriffs department and police departments rip off people too. If you get incarcerated, you lose all rights to your property even for a misdemeanor. I think if you carry a lot of money. Rent a car and drive it to your destination.
If a dog can't be brought on the stand and questioned, they should be used. It's just to get probable cause.
This is outright theft. For years, for decades, Louisiana did this on I10. They would stop drivers, search for "drugs", take the money and walk away.
That money was kept by the sheriff's department and they had massive buildings, huge gyms, totally self contained buildings and the finest vehicles...
I can't remember which major news station did an undercover piece un which they had cameras on the speedometer, had the car checked out by mechanics, lawyers and outside law enforcement to make sure that there was absolutely no reason to pull the vehicle over.
Each car was followed by a backup vehicle filming to further prove that there was no reason for the stops and no longer being broken.
Finally they were able to prove that this was standard operating procedure for those departments on I10.
Only because it was on National news was this ever admitted to by those departments but the practice wasn't outlawed.
Now, almost no News media does this type of journalism
Its CRAZY they can get away with this
He deserves his stuff and money back etc. His reputation has been tarnished unfortunately
When is this going to stop?
He's right. North Carolina is key word
It shows how all police types have a "might makes right" outlook.
DHS should have to repay the money AND 35% interest compounded daily. Plus legal fees.
" Should "
And the TSA is not supposed to contact other Law Enforcement agencies in order to seize cash. That is in fact illegal in and of itself.
Don't fly and let the airline go out of business.
This happens all the time on the highways... they look for cash in people's cars and take it.
Outstanding report
Did America legalize robbery if you hold certain government positions? 🤔
Yeah. Thats why we pay taxes. A thousand times over.
Yes !
Just think about how long this has really been going on.
This is just so very wrong. How am I supposed to believe that the US of A is "the greatest country in the world" when they do things like this and it's OK? It makes me sick and ashamed of my government. 🤬
If you don't understand this is tyranny, I'm surprised you were even able to learn to tie your shoes.
If you are travelling with over $10,000 it's very important that you have copies of your pay stubs both with the money and on your person, and the actual pay stubs some place safe and totally out of reach of the police.
That's insane!!!
Sue the TSA. One guy won his lawsuit
Please donate to the Institute for Justice, an excellent team working for the people for free.❤️❤️❤️
Less than 10% of siezures are real criminals. 90% innocent people. Holy shit. Daylight Robbery
Best thing is to not travel with large amount of cash. These people are thieves.
Perhaps citizens should start asset forfeiture on police property items.
This is absolutely piracy.
Never fly with cash or travel with huge amounts of cash get a cashier's check
You can hear his pain in his voice. Miskeen.
Just another reason not to visit the most corrupt country in the world!
GET 'EM, JODY!
One of the many reasons why I no longer fly!
Horrible
That is some excellent reportage! I'd like to see you go further and find out where all that money goes - you know, the cui bono trail. This has to stop immediately. It looks like government drug pushers are jealous of the "ones that get away." They don't like competition.
Make a "criminal assets forfeiture "
Nothing but a shake down. These people are no better than common thugs. They should be ashamed, but they'd need to be human first.
Cash has nothing to do with safety.
We should track this type of action closely. I can't imagine anyone wants a police officer who is willing to do this work getting a job in their town.
You've got the one guy plain as day on camera stealing that man's 100k. What's he doing now? Where does he work and live? These are questions we'd have answers to if he stole that from a camera crew no?
HOLLY BALLS THAT'S CORRUPT
So where does the money go is the question? Then you find why the government sees the need to use this law in their favor.
Damn, this is ridiculous.
You are so much more polished
Criminals dont fly with cash.
Wow....
It has interfered with ur life liberty and pursuit of happiness...legal tender is just that, legal tender . Ever wonder why they don't seize credit/debit cards, travellers checks, ur bank checks...think about that one. There are no laws prohibiting how much cash you may have or carry. They won't get mine .
Thieves ! No other explanation !
At what point do the Feds return asserts and money to innocent families??? Or persons targeted by their bad behavior and deeds???? This should be immediate action just like it was immediate action to take especially if it was fraudulent behavior!!!!!!!
TSA.. these people are crooks
this is B.S.
It's crazy that everyone does not know about this but if they did, they would do something about it and also not travel with cash.
Legalized robbery
TSA tells them everytime they see cash.
And you dont get lawyer fees back either.
At this point I will only travel with money not worth for the government to seize. Why does anyone need to travel with $100k cash, even if it’s legit. Why give the government the chance to feel suspicious. Or maybe it got stolen and no one will help you.
So TSA just lining their pockets just shows government just takes your money in any way it can from any branch.
Keep Pressing!
I can breath now literally
*can’t*
