The sequence between 1:10 and 3:00 is why I love War2 so much - there's nothing like this in any RTS I'm aware of. I'll give a brief rundown of what happens because it's pretty confusing if you haven't played much: 1:10 Black tries to run his peon between orange's gold mine and town hall, either to block it with a barracks or build a tower behind it 1:11 Orange realises what's happening and puts his peasant 1 square above the town hall. This forces the peon to change its pathing and go above the farm 1:13 After the peon changes its pathing, orange then moves his peasant 1 square so that it blocks the peon from entering from above. This forces the peon to change its pathing again, and it tries to go below the farm and above the hall 1:15 Orange moves his peasant back to its original position, again blocking the black peon from getting in. Black realises he won't get in, so he starts attacking orange's peasant. 1:18 Because black got the first hit, orange knows he'll lose the battle. So he builds a wall - a single unit building. This messes with the peon's AI and causes it to stop attacking. Orange then cancels the wall, getting most of his resources back. 1:24 Black builds two buildings. I'm not sure why this is, presumably to protect his peons as they can't be attacked while building, but it also blocks orange from walking above his town hall - orange now needs to walk around below, which is slower 1:28 Black sees orange walking around below his town hall, meaning that the path to the gold mine is now free. He cancels his building and runs to build a tower below orange's gold mine. Note that in Warcraft 2, after completing a building, peons exit one square to the left of the top left square of the building (unless it's blocked). So in this case, his peon is guaranteed to exit behind the gold mine, where orange's peasants can't get to him. 1:47 Black's tower finishes and he upgrades it to a guard tower. Now he can repair it while orange tries to destroy it. One peon will outrepair 2 peasants' damage, so orange will not be able to kill the tower this way, and soon it will be shooting down all his workers. Orange needs to do something else. 1:56 Orange tells a peasant to mine gold, and as soon as it enters the mine, he builds a building in front of the mine. This blocks the usual place where the peasant would exit with his gold. Because of how War2 solves for an exit position, the peasant will exit behind the mine - which will allow him to attack black's peon which is repairing the tower. 1:57 Black knows what orange is doing, so he builds a farm behind the gold mine. This blocks where orange was hoping to "hop" his peon to. Orange's peon exits in the usual position, near the town hall. 2:04 Orange sends another peasant into the gold mine. You can see at 2:08 he has moved the peasant that was repairing the tower up one square - this is to block the normal exit. This time black isn't able to block the exit, and orange's peasant exits behind the gold mine. 2:10 Black knows that orange will be able to kill his peon, so he tries to avoid it by building a wall (similar to what orange did at 1:18) 2:12 Black sees an opening and builds a barracks to block orange's gold flow 2:15 Orange manages to kill black's peon - now black is unable to repair the tower, and it can be easily killed From this point it becomes a more standard game, but any small mistake in the first couple of minutes can lead to a very quick gg.
This is actually a common feature of almost all competitive RTSs and is called body blocking. It is still very sweet every time and great to watch executed so well.
Very subtle yet mind blowing nuances from an old game that makes me appreciate the skills of players of WC2 and Brood war. They showcase, imo, more entertaining games compared to modern versions of the genre for some reason 😅 TY For your interpretation of the pregame! REALLY learned a lot as well as being entertained 😃
Glad you enjoyed one of my old vids, enjoyed your enthusiasm on your stream about rediscovering Warcraft 2 after many years. Bunch of us still play regularly and love it.
War2USA bringing it to NA time zone. Good community! Love this game. Ty Shark and all involved to keep this wonderful game going. Keep sharing all you content creators. 😁
Cool to see Babyshark on this broadcast. I've been part of her tournaments in the current alive warcraft 2 little community. I'm a little war2 modder, owner of the very only channel that keeps updating & bringing up new mods for Warcraft 2 (mostly single player) in 2023. Please feel free to visit the little channel if interested to see new content being added up for this classic of 90s. Of course my mods are public & free to play. Edit: Ed gorod is also the very only modder out there with a UA-cam channel that makes new generation mods for Warcraft 2 as well. Thanks to him its now possible since 2020 to make new generation mods with a lot more of content. Just search for Ed gorod to find his channel.
Curious question he keeps using grunt and peon instead of the human faction name. Is that because most people play orcs? Or are the two factions fairly matched?
@@OpiatesAndTits Humans are terribly weak in warcraft 2 multiplayer. The reason few times players pick Humans is because they either pick Random in lobby OR... try to win games prior to Bloodlust research by Orc players. This was accomplished this time by the footmen + ballistas rush and so then Knights, while Orc player still was on Stronghold tech.
It's fascinating to see how WC2 looks like a prototype of SC1, with all the fundamentals of the game already in place. Also the jump in quality and complexity from WC2 to SC1 in just 3 years is mind boggling.
funny how I got into SC... I hated SC when I played the demo. but I bought the blizz game of the year 3 pack that had WC2, Diablo and SC... played a bit of WC2 then, played Diablo the most, and then I got hooked on SC... still this WC2 really reminds of being like 15 and I abrely knew anything about RTS!!
I think the guy who's talking more just refers to the Alliance units by their Horde names since Horde is generally the more played race (since Ogre Mages > Paladins)
These are two great players right there. It’s probably been 10 years since I played a lot. You should talk to [TD]Viruz who is in this replay and point you in the direction of some of the best current players. The games where the best players both go heavy macro is pretty entertaining. GoW is the go to standard map, but there’s many other choices to play as well.
Join trogallart on twitch for weekend games, you can play or watch, Trog is very friendly to beginners and explains a lot of mechanics behind war2, it is truly fascinating
The difference between a casual player and guys like tdviruz is abysmal! They don't even waste time playing against casuals! He is a very cool dude, I had the luck to observe him play. The guy chats with you while destroying the others 😂
I believe Orcs and Humans are nearly identical, and Orcs generally considered a bit stronger due to Bloodlust So if you always play Orcs you just call the workers "peons" and the starter soldier unit "grunt" which are the Orc names
Oh man i'd totally watch wc2 stuff if it had commentary. I really only knew channels that didn't have any voice. edit: Sadly it doesn't seem like Babyshark commentates in her other videos, at least for the vods I clicked on to check.

There's no reason to stop making peons in Warcraft 2. It will always raise your income because an unlimited amount of peons can enter gold mines and chop lumber. There's no unit cap either. Starcraft is completely different because only one unit can mine at a time and there is a unit limit cap.

"This game was 5 or 6 years ago, if I were playing now..."
Tasteless: "so they're playing this right now?"
I love seeing this. Brings back the nostalgia but also showcases high level of competition that I wish I knew existed.
Cool to see those same concepts of worker production, worker cuts for timing attacks, all-ins, etc. that can be found in Starcraft too!

I like this type of content. It's hard to find good WC2 stuff so if you can find the good shit I'm sure people will watch
So much nostalgia. Don't think I'll ever play it again, unless by some miracle it gets a good remaster; but it's definitely fun to watch.
I like the WC2 content. Never occurred to me that this type of content existed. Very nostalgic and surprisingly entertaining even now
There is a channel called Warcraft 2, yes, the name of the game, and he streams online matches numerous times.

Love the war2 content, please mix that in with your regular content!
