I think the NFC copper wire on the mag safe accessories is used to identify which magsafe accessory is connecting to the iPhone kind of like my Philips Sonic electric toothbrush when I switch heads and each head corresponds to a specific setting on the toothbrush very cool feature hopefully third parties will be able to use this in unique ways ✅
*Copper wire is likely NFC. Idk if you noticed but when you put the case on an iPhone 12, the screen color flashes for a second with the color of the iPhone case. It's a neat little feature.*
NFC coil. They showed it in the animation for the iPhone 12 event. Makes animations in iOS depending on what accessory you have. (Wallet, case, charger)
I use my iPhone 7 in my car as a FPS using a magnet. With the mag tech now being part of the 12’s do you no longer need a case with a metal plate or the metal plate you can stick directly to the phone? I’m assuming you won’t be able to use the puck through either of those.
It’s either nfc, or to help pass the wireless charging through the case. I know it would probably charge without it, but I reckon it must boost the charge signal.
The copper wire is NFC coil for the phone to recognise the case. You can see it on a few reviewers videos how it shows different image when you attach a wallet, a case, and a charger. Also, you should really get your hands on some magnetic paper. So much easier and straight forward to show magnets and polarity
That copper ring was the NFC tag, just something that made the iPhone 12 recognise the accessory type and model if you check other unboxing video, you I’ll noticed that the moment you put the case/accessory, the iPhone will do some cool animation. Like for a case, it will poped up the ring, and the background will fade into the colour of the casing for few moment. Or when the wallet was snapped, again the ring will appear and there a semi transparent rounded corner box appear on the iPhone screen, which also the size of the wallet. It’s kinda cool to see these stuff btw
I think the ring relays info like what type of case is being attached. I have the red leather case and when I put the case on I get a red charging ring then the screen goes red really quick.
Great video man. I’m sure it’s pretty expensive to make these videos, especially with no sponsor! Thanks for helping provide us with an unbiased review and I hope you grow in subscribers to reflect the incredible content you make!
The Electricity induction coil, it's main function it is to strengthening the electricity transfer through the TPU or other plastic like materials and the NFC it is just a second function/feature, the magnets just helps strengthening the electrical connection by keeping the coils closer and with less gaps inbetween them, keeping it closer on their X & Y positioning and well centralized for it's best efficiency and functionin, since there is people who would complain about the wireless charging not working properly while they are the ones missing the right spot while putting it over the coils. The magnets are not the ones transfering the electricity.
NFC usually needs a chip of some kind doesn’t it? but Apple could be using the qi pad on the iPhone to put out a very low power signal and seeing how the ring changes the field’s properties to determine which accessory it’s connected to without NFC/RFID. Maybe try using a non contact voltage function on a multimeter? I know mine will pick up a repeating ~5hz signal from Qi chargers (judging from counting the noises) and a slower ~2hz signal from Apple Watch chargers while it’s waiting for a device to connect to it.
6:13 i think it has something to do with the animation that you get when you put on the case on when you have a red case you get a red circle animation when its locked, pretty neat
Did the case have the ‘alignment magnets’ at bottom of ring? When looking at inside of case you only see the ring depicted. Alignment magnets are obvious in the clear case, but how about this case? I’m getting confused by it colored cases have alignment magnets.
If you watch the keynote when they do the explosion view it shows all the pieces. If I’m not mistaken it’s for NFC. I’m surprised you didn’t think of that actually lol.
3:28 Interesting, that copper ring looks like the antenna to the NFC chip, I can sort of see a bulge of the chip in the middle. I know the phone has NFC and so does the mag charging puck probably allowing it to increase the charging field to 15 watts, but I can figure out the purpose of a NFC chip in the case?
I’ve been using the Magbak case for my iPhone Xs and it’s super strong. I wonder how that compares to the MagSafe magnets. I think if I were to forget that I stuck it on to my car and forgot about it it probably wouldn’t fall off even at highway speeds. You should do a review on the new ones for the iPhone 12. I am probably going to rebuy if it works the same plus it adds the MagSafe features.
does the magnets embedded in the phone itself plus the magnets from the MagSafe case increase the overallmagnetic power for an accessory like the wallet? thank you.
Awesome vid man! I sorta need help finding a good non fingerprint screen protector for the iPhone SE 2020. It's just that fingerprints really make me annoyed and mad, I also hate cleaning it all the time. Please tell me a good screen protector.
I just did an experiment with my multimeter and putting a loop of wire on a Qi charger does change the signal emanating from it which means the phone can probably detect that change to determine what accessory is connected to it.
Could the copper coil be for wireless charging? Something to do with it? I highly doubt it’s in there to slow the amount of radiation coming out the back of the phone where hands hold like copper rings in orgone are supposed to do so my best guess is maybe it’s also needed for wireless charging? Or perhaps to boost the signal through the case, magnets & dock?
I would be interested on a video that test the MagSafe magnets with a third party magnet mount. I would like to purchase the Scosche MagicMount (magnet mount, Qi charger) without needing to purchase a special case.
Thank you, I’m wishing for the same thing. Someone needs to test the 12s with magnet docks already. I’m used to out a metal plate in my cases. This time around I plan on putting a clear skin on the back of the phone, using a bumper case for edge protection and then just placing the phone directly onto a magnetic charging dock in my car. I’m really hoping it’s possible and secure.
Only a guess but when the case is put on the phone a ring appears in the same color as the case on the screen. The copper ring must communicate to the phone what accessory has just been attached.
The copper coil is the induction coil used to detect the case once it is on phone. It derives little power (not sure from phone or from the cellular signals, can be from the magnetic field change by the magnets inside the phone) with the help of coil and tells your phone that the case is on it.
Im personally wondering if there will be MagSafe cases for iPhone 11 Pro, still beneficial u k ow for the charger not in the way when gaming on the phone or charging safely.
that copper circurlar is some kind of NFC part that communicates the case with the phone. when you plug the case in, it would be blue screen pop up while you're using the blue case. and it happens also with the other colours. the pop up colours will correspond to what colours of the case u use
Mobile tech the copper is the antenna for the case to read on the iPhone there’s a tiny nfc chip attached to it. It allows for the custom animation when connecting the case to the iPhone it’ll show a colored ring based on what color the case is.
Mous claims that their cases work with MagSafe including the clarity. Could you test this, cause I’m not pretty sure it works but I would want to buy a protective case with MagSafe compatibility
it’s probably the nfc identifier, apparently the iphones can tell which color of case you put on and supposedly there’s an nfc tag on the magsafe charger to enable the higher speed charging, so it’s not a hardware thing but a software lock which seems pretty shitty in general...
Copper wire loop = induction relay? and/or the ID feature that lets the iPhone detect the case? I'm guessing that some of these pads off the actual ring offer some very small components that can manage a handshake with the device to ID the case over that copper loop. Monty is very cute btw, I like Schnauzers :)
once the cable is plugged in or powered up, that copper wire creates an electromagnetic field between the charger and the phone. and that electromagnetic field is converted into electricity through the integrated circuit in order to charge the phone. that lighting animation is just a form of a light indicator that charging system is working.
You missed the chips that are in the lower right if you're looking at the inside of the case. If you shine a flashlight on the Inside of the case and look at the back of the case you can see chips on both sides of the bottom.

Me thinks not.Think I might have wasted Au $65
I think to detect the case for the iPhone... because there will be a detection when you put it on, the same for the charger, it is different detection.?
I think the copper wire is ensure the fastest wireless charge while using the mag safe case and the charger and maybe it assists in monitoring of heat?
@@QUARTERMASTEREMI6 yeah that’s pretty cool. For example if I put a red case on it shows red animation and if I put a yellow case on the same animation but yellow instead and so on. I wish it worked with more cases than just apple’s cases
Just found your channel and lose how in depth you go! Not sure how long things take realistically but do you have any idea when you'll be reviewing waterproof cases for the 12? I know Lifeproof is still developing theirs so it could be a while but thought I'd ask. Thanks!
i think that copper thing is the most important part of building a wireless network stronger for passing the current through copper coils. so, if Apple tries to pass current directly MagSafe to iPhone then the material weak's the power of the current. and they can not have 15W power through the case. So for getting a good result they pass the current MagSafe to the iPhone case coil and that copper coil passes the current to iPhone.
Thanks very curious about these type of things You still have the magnets that are under the circle that you didn’t remove The coil as others have said is the nfc chip that tells the phone what color case you put on your phone You can see the animation while on the Lock Screen
It’s NFC, it has a color signature for what case you have. Will the mous case interfere with the phone? It’s superior to Apple’s case. They both use magnets.

The coil is used, to identify the colour of the case when putting it onto the iPhone. It plays some kind of animation that corresponds to the colour of the case. It's some kind of NFC chip 🤔
I wonder if it has anything to change the polarity of the magnets when attached to the charger? Electric currents can affect the polarity/ electromagnetic field. maybe it makes it stronger only for when the charger is a attached Since you mentioned the magnet pieces were pretty weak but has a surprisingly strong connection to the charger. And others are suggesting it’s for the phone to read which accessories are being used, so it would be cool if it had multi function. But this is just a guess
