    I'm not convinced there are "heroes" or "villains." There are those who perform heroic acts, and villainous acts, sometimes the same person. Sometimes the same act can be both. It depends upon perspective. When someone becomes a hero, or a villain, it is likely a narrative being driven by someone with an agenda to create that person as a symbol of something he or she controls.

      Exactly. Well, a few exceptions, one being Che who seems to have done some true atrocities personally. But people like Tesla and Disney may have just been following what was the generally accepted way to think, and talk, at their time. And a hundred years from now similar exposes will be shown about people now considered to be or having been the pillars of our communities. Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, the Obamas, Angelina Jolie, Trump (well, he's getting his today too), current pope, Greta Thunberg... your guess is as good as mine because while there are things that are considered evil at all times there are also ideas about what is good and what is evil that change as times, and sometimes knowledge, do.

      That's true. It was the military withdrawal under the leadership of Subash Chandra Bose and the effects of the second world war that got the British to tuck their tails and go back home with what little dignity they had left. The British used Indians in their armies to fight and pillage for their local battles in India. Of course they could never afford to put their own people on the front lines. They were hit hard in their resources and so they had to leave.

    One should never meet his (or her) heroes. I knew about 90% of this. Some people like to pardon these acts as normal for their times. While I don't disagree entirely with this premise I also know there were many people during their times who did not do despicable acts or have despicable thoughts. Don't hero worship people. Let's celebrate good ideas.

    • @billyandrew
      @billyandrew 2 роки тому +4

      Heroes are the small people, struggling, day to day, to hold family together, pay bills, looking selflessly after everyone around them.
      They have bad moments, but, overall, never let you down, because that's the stuff they're made of.
      I've seen others, idolising and meeting actors, musicians, athletes, etc, crushed, when realisation dawns on them they were hero worshipping a cardboard facade, a character created for public consumption, limited to two dimensions.
      It isn't pleasant to witness the revelation and some, not taking in the lesson, needing someone or something to put on a pedestal, turn their focus to the next unworthy subject.
      I think, no, I _know,_ I've got my priorities right.

      On the contrary, there are so many mediocre, stupid, corrupt, narcissistic, at least selfish, cruel, power-mad, greedy, lying people that we need to have people who are above these, heroes, who are saintly, selfless, eager to help others, brilliant at what they do, creative beyond measure and having great character. Yes, of course, they will have flaws, but they don't measure up to much compared with their virtues. These heroes bring us out of the muck and the slough of despond caused by how awful so many pple are. Trump and his followers, Putin, Xi, Orban, Bannon, etc. etc.

    Hm Interesting indeed. I've always known 1 person's hero is always someone else's villain and vice versa. This brought up points of some people I highly respected for a few things with a reality check of their darkest flaws. To me it just humanizes people. It should be a reminder that sometimes mostly bad/evil people can accomplish good things and mostly good people can have some twisted evil ideas and actions. Therefore such judgement should be on each action instead of the actual person, lest anyone ever see themselves as above reproach for reasons of religion, economy, race, gender, health, or even education. Such pedestals are dangerous because they ignore the reality of other factors.

    Your info on Mother Teresa is a crock. My American wife worked there for some years, not as a sister but as a lay RN. In addition, she wasn't a Catholic, (nor even a Christian), but was very taken by Mother Teresa and her selfless service. If you want to judge the places she founded and worked in India by the standards of America you will, indeed, be sorely disappointed but given where she worked and the culture she worked in she did wonders.
    Also, you can't blame Mother Teresa for what the Catholic church has done since given that she never claimed to have done any miracles herself.
    One thing that my eye witness wife tells me is that Mother Teresa was a remarkably compassionate and giving person dedicated to service to the poor. It makes me wonder about the information, the veracity of the rest of your choices.

      I see your point, but disagree.
      They'd still have enforced the laws, regardless of how many black folk there were in the southern states.
      They went by the teachings of their religious leaders, which incorrectly claimed that black folk were no better than animals and were savages.
      Funny, but not in a ha-ha manner, how that book was used to justify genocidal behaviour towards a people that never once asked to be snatched from their homeland, then treated in such inhumane manner.
      The laws were set in motion to further dehumanised these people.
      It makes my skin crawl, when I think of these monsters we label racists, nowadays.
      It makes my skin crawl further to acknowledge their modern date counterparts walk amongst us, harbouring that same mindset.
      It's wrong on so many levels now.
      It was wrong on so many levels back then and they _knew_ it was!
      It was how most folk thought back then is an inexcusable and unforgivable excuse.
      Even more so are the politicians of today that, because of profit and greed, still rub shoulders with racists and xenophobes running other countries, murdering it's occupants, while they remain in favour, only to topple, depose, assassinate them or invade their country under some pretext, the minute they don't play ball.
      As you'll have gathered, it's one subject that simply enrages me.

    • @billyandrew
      @billyandrew 2 роки тому

      Tailoring through cybernetics and genetic engineering are hardly in the same class as experimenting on, without permission, or putting down a dog, which is how the proponents of this new science viewed and approched it.
      The subjects, in their eyes, held no value and were dispensable...they were looking at viable methods to dispense the subjects in large batches, much as we do with diseased livestock.
      I have yet to read of a single supporter of eugenics that was driven by empathy, advocating cures rather than culling.
      Germany, UK, US, Switzerland, Japan, the same story, the ruling classes all looking to rid these victims from the face of the earth, as if whatever ailed them was transmittable and offended the eyes and sensibilities of these congenital socio/psychopaths.
      Naturally, I share your hope that modern science will produce favourable results, but that is not comparable, in any fashion, to these Frankesteins and their 'solutions'.

Psychopaths don't necessarily murder people but do break the law more than your average citizen. There are also psychopaths that operate inside the law but can be so vested in their own desires that they will do all but break the law to get what they want. Often heads of industry rate high on the psychopathy scale. So it's not all bad news for them. For others not so much. They burn those around them with no regard of the consequences.

    When I was 8 years old, my parents lived just opposite Mother Teresa's Sister's of Charity, in the City of Calcutta. There were times, I use to play outside her main door and she would come out to go on her errands. She would see me, walk up to me and ruffle my hair and say, "God loves you". There was a gentleness anout her and I saw nothing evil in her eyes. I went back many many years later, to pay my respects after I heard she passed away. It was in 2014 that I walked back memory lane and felt, she was still ruffling my hair as I stood by her tomb inside the Sister's of Charity's main hall.

    Yeah a lot of this includes things that by today's evaluations and standards would be considered abhorrent but at the time in which these people did exist most of them these were very common believed things they did not have as advanced societies as we say we do today. Furthermore in some of the examples they held what could be argued to be a moderate to even Progressive View compared to the bulk of the population then. We we cannot evaluate the actions of people in history so easily to current standards no matter when it's being evaluated now you can certainly have some judgment when trying to determine the reason that they may have believed such things and then also that beliefs average acceptance within the time that they existed.

      Well said! People need to understand this. We can't blame people. It was the only way of living they knew. Like they say, "You live, and you learn!" And we did as a society in general! I recently found out some of my ancestors fought on the Confederate side in civil war. My kids are mixed Hispanic and I'm white, but the kiddos were upset with me cuz I still thought it was cool cuz it was something I never knew about. My 15 yr old was sooooo pissed, and was mad cuz I brought it up. She said that she would ever mention it again cuz they should have known better. I tried to explain the point of thinking of that time, but it didn't sink in. So yeah... I guess she'll just have to be ashamed. I would never do what they did, or think how they thought, but they're still the people that got me to this earth today, and so I still feel grateful. Even if they were pos people. I guess we do live and learn! Lol!
