Did you play Gauntlet with friends and family too, or did you prefer going solo? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1986: tinyurl.com/1986-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
When I was a boy I used to lie awake watching my Dad play this, Uridium and Elite. It was one of my earliest memories and started a lifetime fascination with games.
I loved playing this and the add-on pack called The Deeper Dungeons which was more of the same. I never knew there was a difference between the characters such as the way they take hits and how much damage they did.
Its a fantastic and addictive game I spent many hours playing alongside my brother. Yeah there are a lot of positives and negatives to each character, but for some reason I'd always play as the Warrior 😇🕹️👌
loved gauntlet as the actual arcade machine, but also on the amiga 500. My brother found a schematic and made it allowing each joystick port to run 2 x controllers... so we could play 4 player gauntlet on the amiga.. so much fun
It truly is an awesome game. I never got to play this with 4 players even in the arcades. But I can imagine the absolute carnage and fun it must have created... playing 4 players on the Amiga must have been some rush, awesome. The only game I ever played with 4 players was Bomberman on the SNES 😇🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer i've nothing but great memories of the amiga 500, was ahead of it's time for sound and graphics on the one chip. Games like Moonstone, Shadow of the Beast, fa18 interceptor etc...
One of the greatest 8-bit arcade conversions. Loved this in the arcade and on Spectrum and then C64. Did we all buy the Deeper Dungeons add on? Probably. I always felt a bit like it was a cash grabber by design with the health decreasing automatically and the arcade version certainly needs more than one player. Used to hate those lobbers and that level with the teleporters that cut you off from the exit. What a great game though and one that still demands playing if you have it on Mame or a retro compilation.
Just found your channel and instantly subbed! My cousin and I used to play Gauntlet together (with the same "this way! no this way!" arguments!) late into the night. Then get up at 5am before school to get another 3 hours in. Probably in my top 3 C64 games back in the day. Thanks for the video!
Brilliant, thanks @moosemanuk, much appreciated - yeah I'd play this game loads with my brother back when we were kids! Superbly addictive... one I'd think about most of the day at school too! I'd always look forward to getting home and firing up the Commodore 64. Great memories! Hopefully we can unlock some more nostalgic memories along the journey 😇🕹️👌
Hi, new sub here. This is one of my favorites. I liked to play Questor, Syragar always played Merlin. I don't know if you meant it like I took it, but you mentioned Rock and Stone... if so, "ROCK AND STONE!" (If you know, you know.) LOL!
@@CheekyCommodoreGamerHaha! Granny Grumbles is my mother! She and I used to play Gauntlet together. We've enjoyed those old- school hack-n-slash type games. As you can tell from her post, we also like Deep Rock Galactic. I didn't realize you said "Rock and Stone" in your video until she pointed it out! LOL
The Sorcerors don't "reappear somewhere else". They move normally, they just turn invisible temporarily. So, it's possible to keep track of where they are even when invisible ... in theory. In practice, things are usually too hectic, and the fact that they all look identical to each other doesn't help.
Yeah, they move fast too so really difficult to track them individually - I just blast the areas I think they will reappear and it usually zaps them eventually 😇🕹️👌
I think, it's time for me - this year - to switch on my Commodore 64... and play GAUNTLET 😺👍🕹️! I still have this game as a disk version in a compilation called ARCADE FORCE FOUR 😺👍. I also have both GAUNTLET I and II for my PlayStation 2 in the compilations called MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 1 and 2 😺👍🕹️🕹️. I had GAUNTLET II for my Amiga 500 with a Kixx release label 😺👍🕹️.
With a bit of spare time on my hands, I've just switched on my C64 for the first time in ages. Used to play Gauntlet on the ZX Spectrum with my best mate thirty five years ago, but never played on C64. Thanks for the vid.
I had some fun times playing this with my brother... however it would usually end up in a mini tantrum when he wouldnt follow me and we'd get 'Stuck' fighting for the direction we wanted to scroll the screen haha. Great nostalgia - good times in gaming 😇🕹️👌
Ahh, good times! It's an awesome C64 game. My preferred choice of character to play is Thor. I should fire it up again sometime soon and give it a play. Cheers!
Always used Thor myself too, I did like Merlin but I died far too much with that character. Such an epic game which will definitely be something of great nostalgia to me 😇🕹👌
I spent hours playing this with two mates on my (dad's) C64. I think I had a naughty cracked version with unlimited lives. My mates and I had lots of arguments on which way to go through the mazes.
That's exactly the same problem I had playing with my brother. He always wanted to go one way and I always wanted to go another. Caused a lot of rows when we were kids 🤣😄 still, great memories 😇🕹👌
I played this one and master of magic yesterday at our local retro club! knew it :) Gauntlet was spectacular in the Arcade halls and yea the C64 port is built on "mediocre" multi color characters, but man it runs like a train, even if the screen is full of cannon fodder, and that is what matters most with this game ; sounds a bit like a train too btw :P
These co-op dungeon crawlers are great fun while it lasted. I used to have some massive endurance tests of gaming with my brother, sometimes playing Gauntlet for hours at a time until one of us got bored. Good times 😇🕹️👌
bro, my all time fave! long story short me and my bro stayed up till 430 am trying to find an end to this game. it was black and white but we didnt care as it played just like arcade. Gauntlet 2 was much better with the color. Years later on the genesis we played for 4 days strait, we paused it to sleep but our chewed up power cord couldnt keep the power on when one of our stupid girlfriends stepped on the cord! we were trying for lvl 1000 but only got to lvl 648
Haha those are some awesome memories my friend - me & my buddy once played a game on his PS2 called 'Champions Of Norrath' for a whole weekend, with very little sleep. Crazy how much stamina a proper gamer could have in the tank! haha 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Honestly Questor was my guy because I loved Legolas and Robin Hood, but Merlin was a close second because of "The Sword in the Stone". 😂
Thor was definitely the best 'all-rounder', when we played 2 players however... my brother would usually 'steal' Thor as his main character and I would act as a support role with Merlin... great memories 😇🕹️👌
The arcade had so much more power, but for a humble 8-bit machine I do think the port was fantastic. Played this game hours on end with my brother and loved every minute of it. However, like you say, the arcades was the best version 😇🕹️👌
Possibly yeah, imagine if you could equip better weapons in this that would be wild. However you can get potions to make shots faster and stronger etc so I guess there were definitely elements there 😇🕹👌
Did you play Gauntlet with friends and family too, or did you prefer going solo? 😇🕹👌

Those lobbers absolutely sucked 😁🕹👌
Always loved this game on the c64. Impressed by how many enemies are on screen at once
Was a technical achievement and such a great game 😇🕹👌
I loved the 4 player arcade cab, and I loved this conversion. Still a top game.
Awesome yeah I love the arcade cab, usually make a beeline to it on retro play events. Great game 😇🕹👌
love this, one of the first coop 2 player I played
Yeah same as me, the thing is my brother used to wrestle the joystick off me if I wandered the wrong way 😄🕹👌

Kind of sounds like you're describing how Sorcerers reappear somewhere else as one moment you are able to see them, and the next you are not.

Absolutely awesome game, love this one. Played with my brother regularly as kids. Brings back so many memories 😇🕹👌
This was a good game I remember giving it a good bash, there's been other versions released on later consoles but they not as good
Nothing shall beat the original and that's the case with most of these 8-bit classics 😇🕹👌
Great game, even without the robotic voices from the arcades! 👍
Hah yeah 'elf has been eating all the food lately' 😇🕹👌
"You shot the food!" :D

I missed this one at the time, but the review reminded me of an awesome film from circa era, 'Youngblood' with Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze

Yeah really loved this and its sequel and for something similar Dandy and Druid are great

TOP !
Good man. These games will never die as long as we have the support 😇🕹👌
👍👍👍👍👍👍
😇🕹👌
Just like Into The Eagles Nest
Smashing game 😇🕹👌
All the features of the arcade except for three and four player modes. 😂
Absolutely, which was your favourite of the four though and... why didn't anyone ever start off as Questor the Elf!?!? 😄🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Honestly Questor was my guy because I loved Legolas and Robin Hood, but Merlin was a close second because of "The Sword in the Stone". 😂
Strangely I found the Amstrad CPC464 version more enjoyable.
My friend had this on his Amstrad - it had very vibrant colours but I never played on it myself. I'll have to give it a whirl 😇🕹👌
All these videos are wanting me to switch on my c64 again.....if it still works....
Music to my ears, the whole reason I do this channel is for all of us retro geeks to relive our youth. Awesome 😇🕹👌
Wasn't this full of bugs? The arcade game was fantastic.
Love playing this in the arcades even still, with all the voice effects etc - really adds to the atmosphere 😇🕹️👌
Gotta choose Thor every time! Why would you choose anyone else. God of thunder. I mean come on! Obvious choice lol
Thor was definitely the best 'all-rounder', when we played 2 players however... my brother would usually 'steal' Thor as his main character and I would act as a support role with Merlin... great memories 😇🕹️👌
