What is your favourite racing game for the Commodore 64? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1989: tinyurl.com/1989-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
Head and shoulders above outrun, as you say one of the best conversions on the C64. I absolutely love the intro music, I used to leave it playing for hours in my room as I did my school homework.
In 1970, my dad drove Montreal to Vancouver, about the same distance as New York to LA, in 51 hours in a 1969 Pontiac Parisienne with my mom, my older brother and sister, and 1 year old me as passengers. Now, THAT is a road race accomplishment.
Holy Sheeet 0 Here, that would be the equivalent of driving from Lands End, to John O'Groats FIVE TIMES! Effectively driving from the very top tip of scotland all the way down to the very bottom tip of England - five times over. Sheesh the sheer scale of that is mindblowing! I get tired driving to my Mums house and she only lives 8 miles away 😇🕹️👌
Turbo Out Run and Out Run Europa were the best. Completely agree with everything you said. We C64 users could only dream of a conversion like this. Then it came, it was midblowing at the time! Your C64 reviews bring me so much nostalgia and joy that any other channel pales in comparison. Cheers! 👍
Addictive isn't it, I remember those days fondly... you could sit through all the stages and it never got old, a nicely polished game for the beloved commodore 64 😇🕹️👌
Another great vid. 👍🏼I never owned this one but a friend did. Hours of fun. I did beat the arcade game back into the late 80's while on holiday in Spain, it was the highlight of my trip. Keep it up.
I must admit I didn't play the actual game very much, but spent a long time (and occasionally do today on the emulator) listening to that beautiful beautiful music. What an achievement the whole thing was. It was an honour, really, to be able to experience just how much developers could squeeze out of the machine.
Were you a fan of any other particular Commodore 64 racers? I know a lot enjoyed Pitstop II. Check out the playlist as I'll be adding racing games to this over the course of this journey 😇🕹️👌
Superb game, back in 89' this was the closest thing to the arcade we got! Mind you, in comparison... graphically it doesn't compare. However, the gameplay is there big time! 😇🕹️👌
Keep an eye on the 'Racing Games' playlist as I'll hope to be adding more from the genre over the coming months. Power Drift is up there already, along with the 1st Chase H.Q... I'll get around to the sequel someday ua-cam.com/play/PL_TYjnCNYSezgv04kyhHHWVS2-KOpb0yC.html 😇🕹️👌
Loved single-load racers, "Pitstop II" on the first place (and 2-players game!). Had a jaw-drop playing "Powerdrift". I would've probably liked "Buggy Boy" also, but had no idea about it back then. "Great American Cross Country Road Race" seems GOAT - pure classic gameplay with things going on all the time (and totally careless about its generic visuals). Top-down racer - "Rally Speedway" has great "Micro Machines" mechanics, which I like a lot. Some people explained me they liked lavish looking multiload racers like the ones mentioned in the video - and I do get it. They mentioned that accepting "punishment" for bad driving, having to reload tape - was part of the challenge and fun. I actually might get along with that, but then again - it's interesting how there isn't so much needed to achieve sense & illusion of high speed racer with limited resources. Single loaders can do it nicely, at the expense on the variety of scenery. Again, seeing nice sceneries is also awesome, and arcade coin-op game structure may be reproduced on C64 with the "pain of reloading", mimicking pain of throwing more and more coins into the machine. I get it, no problem. Possibly best way of designing very good multiload racer is not doing "progression-based" arcade port, but letting some amount of free roaming in various parts, achieving some special goals, and being allowed unlimited staying power in the current part. Racing and racing, until some performance is showed, and then letting player go further.
Definitely check out the 'Racing Games' playlist within the channel - theres a whole list of games under that genre... all of which I absolutely love on the Commodore 64 😇🕹️👌
Interesting! I had played Outrun on the C64, but did not know they made Turbo Outrun! It looks really good! To answer your question... of the C64 racing games I've played, I'd have to say Pitstop 2 is probably my favorite.
The original Pitstop was pretty basic, but they did a great job with the sequel. Its a bit like the comparison with the original Outrun and Turbo Outrun... it felt like night & day back then 😇🕹️👌
the original Outrun for C64 comes up short a little for sure but it's not tragically bad game to be fair. Some obvious all round improvements though with the Turbo Outrun conversion that made for a very impressive game given the hardware. The C64 sometimes gets a bad rap for it's car games but this I think showed it was certainly up to the task of producing a convincing racing effect of a very ambitious arcade game
Very true - there were actually some classic racing games for the Commodore 64 - all of which I will be adding to the relevent playlist under the correct genre on the channel, check them out and see if there are any more you liked 😇🕹️👌
Probe really showed what they could do on the c64 with this release . Brilliant sampled theme tune . It was slightly spoilt by the loading on tape that most of us in the uk had . Way better than the amiga version in speed and playability Think probe then used an even better version of the game engine on chase hq 2 but this time released on cartridge so instant loading .
Probe were a great publishing house! I've only scratched the surface with their catalogue of games but I'm hoping to add more over the course of this journey for sure 😇🕹️👌
Did you ever play Pitstop II from Epyx? Classic game. Buggy boy was another one I enjoyed playing too... Power Drift.. there were quite a few greats 😇🕹👌
The arcade game was MEGA fast - I played it recently and just kept crashing into everything haha I must be getting old. Mind you, I did have a good few pints and they say you shouldn't drink and drive 😇🕹️👌
Brilliant music and a fine game but the original Outrun conversion tends to be somewhat underrated i.m.o. It may not be a looker but it's the only computer conversion I'm aware of that has anything like an approximation of the speed and scenery whizzing by at a huge speed of knots, like in the Arcade. Also it has many other cars on the road, unlike Turbo Outrun, which never has more than one. Pity it lacks the "choose your own route" for sure but that wouldn't have been possible without a multi-load (or cart version!). The US disk game does offer you to plan your own route I believe but you have to choose the 5 stretches before the start. Sorry to bang on about the original so much but look at ANY other official micro conversion from the time and it's a bloody classic game in comparison! 😅 Turbo Outrun is great too though and certainly is much better "presented". In fact all the Outrun games on the C64 are at least decent, which is a kind of funny statistic considering many people (with some truth) say the C64 struggles the most with this type of game compared to its "rivals".
Hey, Sissel! (I'm also a Ghost Trick fan) Yeah. I liked the original Outrun on C64. It wasn't my favorite racing game, but I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. I was just happy to have a home version of the game. I didn't notice that only one car appeared at a time in the Turbo version until I read your post. Very interesting. Dodging cars in the original was pretty tricky because of the multiple cars appearing at once. I can see that there's pros and cons to both games. It's great that the C64 had versions of both games! 🙂
@@Syragar Hey! Lovely game Ghost Trick, only played it on 3DS myself and I have to wonder how the remaster for PC works... Anyway, yeah, the story behind the creation of Outrun is also quite interesting. It was made by a father and son team while the son was still a teenager! Pop did the graphics I believe. unfortunately stupid US Gold put programmers under a tight deadline, presumably to insure all the conversions sucked. And they all do except the C64 one. perhaps they got some extra time for the US version, probably. There are a lot of technical considerations with only 64K of memory to work with. Martin Piper recently did a video on how Turbo Outrun "works" under the hood (so to speak) and it seems there just wasn't enough space left in the character set to have more than one opponent car on screen. if you like technical (mainly C64 game) stuff, he's definitely your guy.
Thats the beauty of all games I guess as they can all be subjective, I applaud the passion in your comment though and I'm sure many will have loved the original Outrun just as much as this 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Turbo Outrun is obviously outstanding on C64. Outrun maybe not so much but if your mate had it on any other computer, you'd likely be thinking: OK, could be much worse :) The Amiga intro is completely bonkers though, which counts for something I guess.
I just been playing outrun on sega classics collection for ps2. U really enjoyed it so much that i ordered outrun coast to coast for PS2. It arrived today 😎 When i was a kid i really liked the original outrun on c64. That's not saying much though cause u also thought bionic granny was good. So clearly i haf no idea what i was talking about 🤣🤣
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer terrible game really lol. Eh it's good for a kid who doesn't know any better. Haha. The premise is funny though.. a deranged granny hitting all the kids as they walk home from school 🤣. You gotta laugh 😆
