  • The 1970s gave us a lot of different movies... including blaxploitation, in all its glory. Welcome to www.WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Blaxploitation Movies. Suggestion Tool►►www.WatchMojo.com/suggest Subscribe►►ua-cam.com/users/subscription_c... For this list, we'll be taking a look at blaxploitation cinema - which means films that were made primarily for an African-American audience, which featured a primarily African-American cast - and are looking for those that best encapsulate the genre and the era in which it was popular.
    Special thanks to our user Tiye Cole for submitting the idea using our interactive suggestion tool at www.WatcHMojo.com/suggest

    I was raised on these films ...Saw most of them in the theatre as a child in the 70s. The heroes looked like me and the men in my family and that was very,very profound as a young Black Man to see and experience this...The 60s into the 70s We Black people were at our Cultural, Political and Artistic height... Especially the Music that was the Soundtracks to most of these films.. That’s why I have come terms that this era of film is not “Blaxploitation..”But “The Soul Renaissance “era... Can You Dig it... If you can...Then Let it Be Dug....

    2 GLARING omissions, either of which could be ranked #1 on this list are 'The Mack' and 'Willie Dynamite.' If you're getting into blaxploitation, these 2 are must watch!

    • @nl3064
      @nl3064 5 років тому

      How are these a "must watch" in the genre? They're not foundations of the genre like Shaft, Superfly or Sweet Sweetback. Willie Dynamite was pretty decent, though - one of the better ones. But the Mack was terrible - it was exactly like the rest, recycled in every way, boring as hell (I even skipped thru some of the scenes, it was unwatchable) and as cheap as most of the other ones. It blurs in with the rest. And Goldie was boring - Max Julien is not really leading man material. He felt kind of cardboard and doesn't have the charisma of Richard Roundtree or Roscoe Orman or Pam Grier, etc. He was pretty forgettable. Fuck the Mack. What a waste of time. Everything about it was standard, by the book, and disposable.

    Alot of people are getting the wrong end of a very long stick. Blaxsplotation actually falls under explotation films which included sexplotation and carsploitation plus a whole lot more. Explotation movies are just films which attempts to succeed financially by exploiting current trends, niche genres, or lurid content. Exploitation films are generally low-quality "B movies".

    If you liked some of the intro songs in the video, get yourself a copy of a CD called "Badmutha's: 18 Original Black Movie Hits". In a lot of cases, the soundtracks for these movies are way better than the movies themselves. (Side note, Superfly's sound track made more money than the movie did, and is rightly considered a classic).

  • @johnlemus7921

    My favorite is Foxy Brown, I just love that film. My Second favorite is Sugar Hill 1974. Its a revenge film like Foxy Brown only with Zombies. Its a really strong film and should have been on the list instead of Blackula.
    Also Roger Moore, James Bond, Live and Let Die. Sure it has a white lead, but to me, in many ways its a blaxploitation film. Also one of the best Bond films of all time.
    This one is an homage to the the films. It might be because Michael Jai White a hero of mine, and I got to meet him earlier this year, but, I love Black Dynamite. Could also be because I love Salli Richardson.

    Fun list. It takes me back. However, I think the term 'blaxploitation' should be retired. I tend to use the term 'soul cinema', which feels better and more accurate to me. I was a movie-going teen at the time and these films didn't come across as exploitation; certainly no more than Hollywood normally takes advantage of a moneymaking trend. As far as I can tell, the martial arts genre, which followed, hasn't been saddled with the "exploitation" title; nor the disco phase, which followed that, and so on, and so on.

    Blacula is my favourite of the list. Ironically it's also the only horror film to show the Dracula character as he's actually described in the Stoker novel! (long gray hair and a moustache and dressed in black with no speck of colour). Interestingly Charles Macauly also played Dracula in an episode of Night Gallery. I would say Coffey is my second favourite (I have yet to see the sequel Foxy Brown). I can see that the film Jackie Brown was heavily inspired by Coffey! I was very surprised by how much! Even to the extent of hiring the leading lady!

      After his death in 73, you could call all Kung fu movies from 74-80 Brucepoitation...

    What, Black Dynamite didn't make the list? And no, I'm not talking about the "Adult Swim" animated series. Not all blaxploitation movies had to be made in the '70s.

      black dynamite was a parody

      Chris Walker Parody of what? So if a movie like that is a comedy, it's a parody? It's not exactly The Naked Gun.

    • @gangsquad967
      @gangsquad967 8 років тому +4

      +supercyberfunk a parody of all these films. just like naked gun is parody of cop movies.

    Cotton Comes To Harlem, Slaughter, Truck Turner, Three The Hard Way, and Cooley High are on my top 10. I'd keep Foxy Brown, Coffy, Superfly, Shaft, and Across 110 Street.

      I like Blacula. I might have to put Cooley High 11.

    There seems to be some confusion. The "exploitation" genre of movies are just movies that exploit a current trend, usually cheaply made and quickly put together. The term "blaxploitation" is just a term used for movies in the exploitation genre that feature a mostly black cast aimed at a black audience. The word "exploitation" in this case has nothing to do with capitalizing on the exploitation of black people or use of stereotypes. Although that was a different issue in and of itself.

    As long as Coffy, Blacula, and Shaft are on this list, I'm satisfied lol

    How did i know Shaft was going to be number one. That is everyone's typical go to movie when talking of this topic. Just like everyone claim Biggie or Tupac is their number one rapper.

    I've seen all of these films listed, and none is nearly as good as "Truck Turner" with Isaac Hayes, which didn't even make the list. Great action, camerawork, dialogue, music..everything you need from the genre. "Truck Turner" is the best Blaxploitation movie ever, and it's not even close.

    Great list but given the amount of cultural impact "The Mack" had on a generation of Black boys (unfortunately IMHO) it should be easily top 3.

      That one was on the same plane as Across 110th Street. It attracted white audiences when it was shown in white neighborhoods.
      It wouldn't have grabbed any white audience had it had a lower budget and with lesser names in the lead roles.
