You're absolutely right about the selfishness. My warehouse has had the same top select for a decade, he has his own reserved parking spot and he's almost run me over three times in my first month. He doesn't use his horn, he goes the wrong way in aisles, he doesn't care.

When I say 'almost', its not because he saw me and slowed down, its because I saw him at the last second on the rabbit and had to jump out of the way while he just kept going. It's really a problem.

I work at the Perishable DC in Minnesota. And all your cons are definitely on point, but I wouldn’t consider all your cons, my personal cons. I pull 130% most everyday, but I do tend to push myself to pull higher, not because it’s worth it, but because it makes the job more enjoyable, it’s like a game. Safety is #1 priority at the end of the day but some people depend on that incentive money for bills, paying for kids in the household, etc. We make anywhere from 300-400 extra a check when we hit our 130 every week. Is it worth it? Depends on the person, their physical fitness, their attitude, work ethic, etc. I love working to hit incentive, but definitely not for every order filler. Love your channel, keep up the great content! Have thought about bringing up your channel to my managers as well, very informational and easy to watch and learn from home, rather than only on site. New hires will be happy they check you out.

My incentive plus hourly pay is equal and out to 32 an hour with me working on average of 45 hours a week. Money is good and I have good home life balance. I pull my weight so I can go home as an individual. Most warehouses could care less if you work as a team. Everyone likes to drag the day out since they don't want to pull the weight.

Really good video, Tim. I agree with a lot of it, but the only part I'd say where culture comes into play is how we work toward our full incentive. I always finish the week well above our incentive rate, and while I orderfill I never choke other lifts/selectors out of the aisle. Even if I'm pulling a 250 I will pull over for a guy pulling a 110 if he's going to pass me. I'll even back up behind them and give them the center lane if necessary, or pass them a case from a slot I'm blocking so they can continue down the aisle.
The unfortunate side of it is when I worked with people who didn't have this mentality and we'd all run on top of each other and it felt extremely dangerous all the time. Injuries were very abundant. We had the most in the country for our D.C. at the time. Before we had impact sensors on our center-riders people would actually run into your trip as hard as they could and destroy it if you wouldn't move over fast enough, or smash you into a wall. A lot of people's records in the building are precisely because of this mentality. Since I'm one of the top producing orderfillers I set the tone in my department and I refuse to be an arrogant selector like the ones I met when I first started. We all work toward our incentive pay, but I'm not going to be cut off and cursed out.

I'm currently working on a C.S. degree through my job--so my plan is to sit in a chair and basically push numbers around until I can retire. This isn't a job that people can do indefinitely. Even the man who we considered the goat at my job (who also taught me how to be good) has finally begun to succumb to his injuries.
I imagine if one were to do physical therapy, train very hard (well beyond what orderfilling demands) and really took care of their nutrition they could order fill until they are nearly 60. But the repetitive stress--the young men who will not respect you once you begin to wane, and just the general perception that it's time to move on is enough to usher most out of the role.
I can probably keep this pace until I'm in my mid 40's, but I am already beginning to feel imbalances and other problems coming up that aren't as easy to repair when I was a young man. Truly, if you can orderfill into your 40's you're demonstrating either obstinance or perseverance.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with this mentality. Another con to add in my experience is how much preparation you need to do to hit those high numbers consistently. I know guys that come in an hour before work to get the best pallet jack and load up on slip sheets. The amount of dedication to eat right and sleep right as well is another job in of itself. I do my 100% and prefer to work overtime occasionally but running myself into the ground is not an option.

At our warehouse, the incentive selectors are sent home when the work is done. & the work doesn’t ever go a full day consistently. I just hit incentive today. Start on Sunday. If I’m offered a dock coordinator position with the opportunity to select on days off. Should I take that opportunity, or stay as an incentive selector? People are saying “the hours are coming back” meaning there will be more hours. But I agree as far as advancement I’m not sure incentive selecting will lead me anywhere. I’m 21 soon to be 22 btw

    • @TheWarehouseSeries

Good video Tim, thank you for this video man. I disagree with you on the first pro partly due to it contradicting the second pro. Do you make more money if you are getting out early? Your cons are spot on, incentivized jobs make for a hostile environment. Incentivized pay hurts the guys that want to do things by the books. Building properly, help other tms, treat their other tms as team rather than competition. When engineers come to look at the standards they are not looking at the guy doing the right things. Jeremy does the right thing but does 110%, but Tim picks at a 225%. Lets base 225% as the new 100%. I hope that makes sense.

  • @jamesmackay4502

Unfortunately these companies don’t care about you and everyone’s replaceable in this industry, while it’s a fantastic paying job I must say incentives just aren’t worth it - going above and beyond your KPIs just aren’t worth it either, find a comfortable pace you can stick to consistently all day/afternoon whether that’s 95% or 105%, keep it in the ballpark of whatever’s required and you’ll be surprised at how manageable it becomes. Not just for your job but also you’re overall energy levels and physical endeavours outside of work (playing with your kids, going to the gym, etc.), all of which are just as, if not, more important than your *job*.
