  • In a 1981 interview on Today with Phil Donahue, a 39-year-old Bernie Sanders says he is "not a capitalist". Sanders had just won his first term as Mayor of Burlington, Vermont. In explaining his case for socialism he says, "Do I believe the profit motive is fundamental to human nature? The answer is 'no'. I think the spirit of cooperation - that you and I can work together is better rather than compete against each other and destroy each other."

So you're a nutJob Socialist too? Funny how Socialism fails everywhere it's tried and yet you people still believe it can work. Venezuela is the latest example of what unchecked Socialism does to a people. Socialism is evil.

@Divided States of America anyone that completed middle school (f that have that in Russia) can identify the differences between socialism, and communism. I'm sorry that the education system failed you. A hack that is advocating increasing his own taxes. Got it.

Capitalism is not the basis of social democracy, socialism is. Capitalism is, as Marx described, an evolutionary stage of development. Social democracies continue to socialize more and more as has been described in the scientific socialist literature. To retain bourgeois capitalism past its usefulness causes damage, which we are witnessing in the United States.
