5 Reasons to Purchase a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 (ZS7)

  • Produced in 2011 the TZ10 (ZS7) is one of the last of the CCD sensor travel zoom cameras produced by Panasonic before the range became fitted with CMOS sensors.
CCD can theoretically produce cleaner images at the native (base) ISO sensitivity but suffers from slow readout of data. The slow readout limits the video recording to just 720p at 25/30 frame per second. CMOS doesn't have this limitation and hence is the reason (as well as cost advantage) that newer cameras have this device.
The camera has full manual exposure control and has the option to customise the way that the JPEGS are produced by the ability to adjust sharpness and noise reduction saturation and contrast.
By reducing the sharpness the artefacts due to aggressive sharpening in camera are reduced. By reducing the noise reduction it removes some of the intentional blurring used to disguise the noise. The two elements can be adjusted in post processing depending upon the image needs.

Great video Graham. I bought a TZ10 without any prior knowledge beside liking optical zoom.
Your review is a 'top it all off' recommendation for me. Keeping iso to base level 80 is a brilliant suggestion. I will look forward to receiving my TZ10 this week.
Thank you, and greetings from New Zealand.

I picked up a ZS6 for $20 on ebay and modified it for IR by removing the IR cut filter and installing a 37 mm 720nm on the front lens bezel per one of your other videos, and I love this camera! From this video I learned some tips to optimize image quality, such as best picture adjust settings and aperture and ISO choices for minimizing noise, a major issue with these tiny and densely populated sensors. Thanks so much for posting this and I look forward to watching more of your excellent tutorials !!

Greetings Graham. After booking a cruise to Alaska to celebrate my wedding anniversary next summer, I turned my attention to choosing a camera for the trip. I have a DMC-FZ35 super zoom and enjoy using it still, but it's rather large and conspicuous to be packing on the ship and day-long shore excursions. One of your videos introduced me to the TZ cameras and after watching several more, reading reviews and ogling over sample photos, I bought a like new TZ5 and TZ10 for $50/us each. They've been fun shoot with - restoring to me the joy of photography that I'd lost in shelving the FZ35 and taking snapshots with my cell phone or the Lumix DMC-FH6. I've a lot to learn and practice before the trip. Thanks for your encouraging reviews and use instructions. Jack in Sequim, Washington

Just watched your Lumix LX5 video to compare it with my LX7. I was thinking of gett, the LX5 to compare its ccd sensor output with my LX7 until you mentioned that TZ10 has the same ccd senor as the LX5. Now that I've watched this video, I will look out for a TZ10 instead of the LX5. Thanks for sharing your work! I started following you when I got the FZ200 😊

I bought a used ZS7 blue model in September on EBay. I find the image quality better than on my first Panasonic super zoom ZS30. I also recently bought a used Panasonic LX7 from B&H Photo. The LX7 with its f1.4 aperture is a low light marvel! Love these old cameras.

I've just picked up an LX5, needs a bit of TLC but already it's turning in some really nice images - with the addition of RAW for the times when that extra processing would help.

I have used the TZ10 for many years as it is still one of the most popular cameras when capturing video at music concerts. You can get some exceptional results in low light concert situations. The audio lets it down and I have since progressed to the FZ330 which gives exceptional 4k concert footage. I still use the TZ20 on ocassion and every time it reminds me just how good it is.

It's a pity they don't fit mic socket on the TZ - in AVCHD with stereo sound it would make a great little recorder. The Fz330 gets a lot of attention at concerts as it looks like a pro camera.

      @philhonley 6 років тому

A mic socket would be great. I have been fortunate to get my Fz330 into many concerts. I regularly record at my local club and sync with sound desk. The results are stunning, especially if you view on 4k tv.

Thank You Graham for bringing this issue up again. The old CCD cameras did provide better pictures than CMOS sensors and it was a bit of an issue back when the changeover was going on. I look back at my 5 megapixel photos from my Minolta DiMAGE A1 and they look great . Way less noise, good sharpness, and more saturated color, and and they don't need a ton of PP just to get them to look printable. I hope the ZS7 performs as well. I and many others wished that they would have pursued the further development of the CCD technology.

Those are some nice clean shots. I still have and use my ZS7 (TZ10) I've wanted to upgrade to one of the newer models with the mindset that newer is better. That may be true for some features. After watching this video I feel better knowing this camera still holds it's own if not better in image quality.
By the way thanks to your helpful videos I was able to clean both the lens and the CCD sensor a couple of years ago. The lens was tricky but I managed. It's about time to do it again. That's really been my only gripe with this camera.

Interesting video, I bought a 'preloved' TZ10 five years ago as I could not afford the Lecia D-lux, they seemed similar and I'm not disappointed. Always my 'go to' camera when in a hurry.

Nice one, a lot of folk could really benefit from checking out older cameras. I've recently purchased a totally mint boxed Lumix G2 with kit lens and accessories for just £60 from a charity shop! It's a few years old for sure but a very cheap entry into micro four thirds and takes excellent images. As for CCD sensors my really old Sony Mavica still takes lovely pics saved to floppy disc! 😊

The 780 video looks great. I have decided to get a 30mm screw thread filter for my FH25. I'm getting good results from using an old #87 gel for infrared photography. The plastic has tiny scratches that cause terrible lens flare if it is pointing towards sunlight. Another advantage to screw filter is that I will be able to buy an infrared blocking filter to replace the pass filter that I've removed. Using my FH25 as a specialized camera has saved it from the junk drawer when I switched to the FZ300.
These little cameras are still great. Thank You for reminding us. God Bless

Yes I'm now doing a series on the 6 years old plus cameras as larger pixels means lower light performance - especially as most people are no viewing images and video on 3 inch screen smartphones. These older cameras with terrific performance at low ISO get a new lease of life.

Although it only shoots at 720p, I believe the CCD sensor has a global shutter. So no rolling shutter which is nice if you need to stabilize in post.

Hi Graham - I really enjoy your video's which I find so very informative. I have a Lumix TZ10 that I really love, but cannot find any way to use this camera as a webcam for zoom meetings. Can you assist with a workaround/solution? There's obviously nothing in the manual which was probably predates webcam camera usage in 2010..Alan

Your vid's R great! My dilemma is I am still comparing the ZS7 (tz10) to the ZS3 (tz7). I guess both have there trade offs. Just want to get a knock around that takes the best stills including macro where the ZS3 might just excel due to its larger pixels??? Thanks!!! PS I have the LX5 & that's a keeper & I want one for a knock around all around use when I just don;t want to risk damage to the LX5.!

A question for you : in your personal experience, what's the best lenses , for contrast and resolution, at end of tele zoom (over 500mm) in a pocket camera (sx series canon, tz series pana, etc.etc.) ?
Tank you very much and good light.

Just bought a zs 7 again. Took my 1st one to Europe and the pictures were beautiful until... the lens wouldn't function. Luckily my kids brought my Canon S90 to Paris so I was able to take pictures for the rest of the trip. No phone cameras in those days. Advantage of the zs7, GPS location in the Metadata.

The TZ-9 is the same camera as the TZ-10 minus GPS and AHCD. Leica’s version is the V Lux 20. I picked up the TZ-9 for around $30 and I didn’t see the point of spending $100 on the Leica name and the famous red dot! 😊

Hi Graham, I commented on this video before, pointing out that thanks to your information I had reviewed my other cameras' specs and found that my older Olympus point-and-shoots had CCD chips. Thanks again for that, but just wanted to let you know that my Lumix TS3 -ALSO- has a CCD with the bonus that it shoots FHD (AVCHD) because of double output circuitry for video. That would make it a very good purchase on the used market, given that it's also a sealed, water and dust proof unit. And no, I won't sell you mine. ;-)>

Your findings match my "non scientific" observations..... the TZ10 was/is a cracking little camera- and for my money the best of the TZ bunch...
The image settings (especially NR) were very beneficial, the movie capture- despite modest res' by today's standard- was very nice- as was the audio quality. The lens was consistently sharp throughout its ample range- and the camera was very nicely put together...
I may seek another... though My Sony HX80 (with great HDR) is stopping me...!

the advantage is that you have more zoom available and that allows you to make your subject stand out from the background. The smartphones tend to have wider angle lenses with a large depth of field so everything is sharp.

Helena, it works now, at least for me. You might try changing the video to a different resolution until the video gets done processing on youtube. Sometimes that works.
