  • Lupita (born Maria Guadalupe Palomera Chavez), was known in Mexico as “The Sweetheart Of Song” and “The Radio’s Sweetest Voice.” She was backed by a marimba band on this very first recorded version of the famous Mexican song “Perfidia,” popularized in the U.S. in 1941 by Xavier Cugat • 1941 HITS ARCHIVE: Per... , Glenn Miller • 1941 HITS ARCHIVE: Per... and others.
NOTE: This post is based upon various online sources which give a 1937 recording date (and 1938 release), however I have yet to uncover a specific session date for this track (not even on the DAHR). No one seems to be denying that Palomera did record the song first, but because the earliest label scan currently available seems to be the pictured one which comes from a 1939 pressing, additional documentation would be welcome in regard to the actual recording date.
The 78rpm single was issued on Victor 75940 - Perfidia (Alberto Dominguez) by Lupita Palomera, Con la Lira de San Cristobal

The first, and still the best of what became a world song, interpreted everywhere in different ways but still true to the music. Her diction is spot on and the marimba band is well, so spooky.

Her diction is absolutely impeccable - even the great Alfredo Sadel starts to slur a little in his versions of this song prior to his operatic training. Excellent version - this and her Vereda Tropical are all-time classics.

There are numerous instances of songs written earlier that have been incorporated into films at a later date. " Tea for Two" is one example.

They used the music in Casablanca and Now, Voyager both in 1942

I’ve been looking for the version in Casablanca. I think I finally found it. Hard to find what the name of that tune is, especially from the tiny excerpt in the movie.

How could it not? I play it instrumental on guitar all the time now.

Not mentioned is that Lupita is the diminutive of Guadalupe.

Are you sure this isn't 1939? That's when the movie cited on the label came out.

I've always had some questions about it. See the just-updated video description...and thanks for the nudge. :-)

@@the78prof72 Very nice! Few things weird me out more than when rateyourmusic.com and 45worlds.com list a record several years out of order from everything else on the label. To their credit, though, I find them a lot better about that than discogs.com.

As I mention in the "First Recording..." playlist description, my primary sources for determining 'original' versions and/or specific recording date info are 'Second Hand Songs', 'The Originals Project,' and the DAHR.
