  • This was not the famed Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith, but an earlier musician known as Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith, who performed for a time with country music pioneers Alton and Rabon Delmore (aka The Delmore Brothers) as the Arthur Smith trio. Smith and Alton Delmore wrote and first recorded this waltz which would emerge years later in 1951 as both a country and mainstream ‘pop’ song hit for both Jimmy Wakely ( • 1951 HITS ARCHIVE: Bea... ) and Rosemary Clooney ( • 1951 HITS ARCHIVE: Bea... ), though with a slight lyric change to cut back on the alcohol references.
Transferred from 78rpm Bluebird B-7221 - Beautiful Blue Eyes (Arthur Smith-Alton Delmore) by The Arthur Smith Trio, recorded August 3, 1937

My granddaddy wrote this song. His name was Arthur Smith and he was a performer on the Grand Ole Opry for many years. He was married to Nettie Baker Smith his entire adult life. My father was his son. Fiddlin' Arthur Smith was also known for a group called Fiddlin' Arthur Smith and the Dixieliners. He was quite a prolific composer and wrote a lengthy list of tunes including Peacock Rag and Fiddler's Dream. He also appeared in several motion pictures with Jimmy Wakely. Roy Acuff once called him "King of the Fiddlers". He was inducted into The National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2014.

Someone put together a playlist that's supposed to be The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Country Music (which I have on vinyl, 8 disks) which is 143 tracks...but it lists 149 videos. Why did they put this track on the list? It's not on either of the versions of the Smithsonian collection. Oh well...I digitized the records, and, just because it makes more sense to me, I'll put it up on YT myself...I'm just not sure if my noise reduction was enough or too much (I better clean my ears out, so I can tell how it really sounds).

Nice. I had a couple of Arthur's Super Disc 78s.. Guitar Boogie and The Corset Song. I've never heard any Bluebird recordings before. Btw.. Didn't Frank Sinatra first record on Bluebird?

Sinatra's beautiful 1942 Night and Day was on Bluebird with several others from that session including The Song is You.

@@Telcom100 There were two more on that memorable session,"The Night We Called It a Day",and "The Lamplighter's Serenade",all arranged and conducted by the man who would collaborate with Sinatra for the next 10 years,Axel Stordahl.

Does anyone know how suddenly, from the 50s on, this song was also credited to Jerry Capehart?
