Horizon Zero Dawn - Animation Reel

- A small collection of my animations from Horizon Zero Dawn for Sony Playstation 4.
I was the lead animator during the 6 year development of the project, focussing full time on the robots in-game making sure the style, look and feel of the robots stayed consistent by the team.
6 years is a long period, so I picked a handfull of animations that showed a wide variaty of motion and action on the robots I was mostly focussed on myself.
Big thanks to the entire team at Guerrilla Games for all the hard work and dedication the last couple of years.
This video is for demoreel purpose only and is not representative of the final game quality (lighting test levels were used to capture the animations from a devkit)

The animations in this game felt really organic. As if the machines were actually real.
Which is a bit ironic since they're, you know.
Machines.
@@natchu96 Not really, GAIA probably made them like that for a reason
@@___echo___ apart from this is a game written a designed by people....
@@natchu96 It's even more ironic because the foxes in this game are stiff like machines
@@NichtNameee what do you mean?
I loved it when the grazer started to scratch its ear. This made it seem like less of a machine and more of a living creature.
Thanks.. glad you liked it
I see these machines as living creatures.
Excuse me but would you please tell me why do you make they scratch their head? I know it looks more like a living creatures, but they are also robots, they have no itching sense. Please don't get me wrong. These animations are learning materials and I really want to know what did you think when you made them. Thank you in advance.
@@quanghuytran3717 Probably a inset is sucking the Blaze or oil from the wires of the machine, who knows!
@@quanghuytran3717 You probably should’ve actually tagged the content creator if you wanted them to respond but regardless I think you might’ve answered your own question. It’s most likely a creative touch added to make them appear more life-like and emotive despite being robotic automatons. I think one of the animators talk about it here but I haven’t watched the whole thing ua-cam.com/video/50mIKB-NACU/v-deo.html
However from a practical in-game-lore point of view you could argue scratching like that is also just a simple action that helps remove debris from the their heads as opposed to having an “itch” sensation like real animals do. This animation is mainly seen on the Grazers and lancehorns who are blaze gathering terraforming-acquisition units that use their robotic “antlers” and “horn” apendages to dig into the soil throughout the day. Overtime one could expect debris like grass and dirt to mildly accumulate on their faces/optics so a little scratching may just help clear clumps of it away if necessary. G.A.I.A programmed the machines to have animal like behaviors in accordance to their chassis design. Not just to help accomplish their task in repairing the biosphere most efficiently but to fill the void left by the extinct animals that once roamed earth.
one of the animations that really caught my eye while playing this game was the stormbird's walk cycle at 0:24. seeing a giant metal bird with its own cloak of lightning strut towards me with murderous intent was both awesome and terrifying
2:40 : me going to bed after school
2:47 I think this also applies 😅

Lol
You're a Rockbreaker 😂😂
The Grazer animations are so cute! Also, it is funny how all the other machines are being so active and aggressive with their movements while it is just doing its own thing.
Loved animating them., was able to put so much personality in them because of that
Being a machinist and technician myself, I can definitely confirm this level of engineering in the game’s universe is generations ahead of what we have today. As of today, we have only scratched at the surface of basic motor functionality and memory. Nothing we have made yet has the capacity to adapt and to learn, outside of military-grade drones.
Question, why cannot AI in games built into real world?
This technology was to advance, the machines could harvest energi from the earth, another from other machines. But i like the design. When i looked closer i can see carbon fiber skin.
Amirul Adli M. Sabri
I'd assume it is because the entire world is defined in a video game, whereas in real life, it's not possible, or if it were, not particularly practical, to map out every groove and bump of the earth and thus, probably a problem with real-time terrain and obstacle detection.
And i can almost guarantee you military-grade drones will be the first to take that massive leap.
"adapt and to learn". Nothing about that is related to motor functionality and memory, or the fact you're a machinist/technician. That's Artificial Intelligence. It's more computer science than anything mechanical.
I love the perceived difference in weight of the different models when moving. Absolutely incredible.
This is not game, but art
Imamsyah Akbar that's the animation you see in the game
That’s like looking at a painting and saying “that’s not a painting, but art”.
Video games are a form of art.
@@drgonphart5415 they haven't been declared one of the seven arts (there would be 8 is they would be art) but I consider them art
TK-473 they consist of all different sorts of arts, put together to create something amazing
@@drgonphart5415 yeah I agree, but sadly many people don't see it that way
The act of making machines move like animals is probably one of the greatest achievements. They were so fluid and lifelike I had to throw my whole self into fighting them, which is not how I usually play games.
Mad respect.
That’s so much praise.. i really appreciate that! So happy you picked up on that stuff.. that was the main goal when i started on the project, to make them feel like they belong in the world..
I love how the game made every machine feel very distinct. It didn't feel like you were fighting a generic mech tiger, you were fighting a sawtooth. You were watching grazers do their thing. Also the difference between the other classes of robots and combat class was nice since those are the ones not just throwing themselves at you in hopes of ending a fight quickly, but actually fighting back and using weapons offensively
i love how everything has a real animal base and then theres monster hunter t rex thing
This game was fantastic, can't wait for the expansion. The animations really made this game more immersive and standout.
Admit it. All of us had the sudden instinct to roll when we watched this.
i love the attention to details and variety of the machines. Makes me wish they make more in the future.
Yasha i heard it will be a sequel to this awesome game so hopefully they will make a variety of robots
Guerrilla Games say that they are working in a new game, and probably is Horizon 2
@@martinespinoza904 I'm 100% sure it's the next Horizon
Yasha Ты русский?
Yes there will be new machines because Hephaestus is no longer control by GAIA before the robota that he is creating is to help terraform the earth, now he can create any design and robot he can imagine
Wonderfully struck balance between organic, robotic, deatiled, readable and unique.
This game is a master class in video game art. Models, animation, FX, lighting, everything is so well made.
Wow,these animations are sublime,it's so ironic that even though they're machines, they look so liveful,i love how they attack, the response, the moveset, the mechanical design, such a remarkable and beautiful work that inspires me.
I hope you still working for the sequel cuz i wanna see more of these bad boys in action!
Thank you so much.. appreciate the kind words! I’m still the lead animator on Horizon Forbidden West.. 👍🏼
@@richardoud good luck, man, hope everything's going well there! can't wait for next year!!
@@richardoud We will have the same machines of Horizon Zero Dawn in Horizon Forbidden West?
Interesting that from this camera angle the attacks don’t look very threatening, but in-game they are terrifying as all hell
Yes, exactly.. it has to do with size since there is no context with an environment/character, but all the attacks are also very specifically animated to work within the game camera.. if you’re interested, just search for my GDC talk where i very clearly explain this concept..
Are you the one behind that god forsaken jumping attack the corupter uses gee thanks
lmao
The amount of time I would just stand at a distance and _watch_ the machines move around and do their own thing. This wasn't a static world, where beasts just stood around waiting to attack or be attacked. It felt alive and dynamic, where events could occur beyond your control. As an open world gamer, that's heaven.
The work you guys accomplished on the animation and AI was incredible. Thanks.
nice..you can se now how much details are ingame..that's make the game great..and unforgetable story
Oh hey :D
One while crossing sentinel's dawn, I had to encounter a ravager/sawtooth and some glinthawks. Knowing what a pain in the ass these birds can be, I overrode the cat and made it to fight the nasty birds. I was surprised by the finesse in movement these things had while fighting. One specific one was when the sawtooth stood on its hind legs and used it's paws to hit and drag a low flying bird to ground. Just like a real feline would with a bird it is trying to catch. Amazing. !!!
Aah that sounds like a great moment.. insane, still amazed by these stories 😋 and yeah, who doesn’t hate glinthawks..
Everything is moving and gotta be done correctly imagine how hard that is
Respect to the animators
You guys did a fantastic job. This is the best game I've ever played.
Same here. :D
Is a game!?!?
@@emilyelliott408 Yes, "Horizon Zero Dawn" on Playstation 4 and now the PC.
Finally a remarkable game made by the Netherlands! i’m proud to be a part of this country and wish Guerilla much luck in the future of game-development!
Hiep, hiep, hoera!
They are from Netherland?!
Mini Kroasan Yes they are. To be specific: they are located in the capital city of Amsterdam
@@RAPTOR-bs7em woah!
bij de credits zag ik 60% nederlandse namen, ik was verbaasd guerilla games nederlands was lol
@@___echo___ wow ik ook ik kom da nu pas te weten
Its 2021, I am playing the game for the first time.
These animations are unreal, in every sense of the word. You guys did an amazing job on all the minute details that make then organic.
The first time I saw a thunder jaw I was scared for real, few games did that to me.
Good job !!!
Why am I seeing this just now!?
Incredible!!
The best and more detailed game I ever played. Even more detailed than GTA. This is Art. I cant wait for HZD 2!
I just wanted to tell you that this reel is amazing, the animations of the robots in HZD are some of the best Video game animations I've ever seen, and I enjoyed them very much!
Just replayed HZD. Amazing work, Oud. Having machines imitate life so closely just reinforces the plotpoints of the game's narrative, and Gaia's love and memories of animals long extinct.
Thanks for playing and the kind words!
Horizon zero dawn is my favorite game , i love this game so much 😍
1:17 😂
The beauty was that while most of the things could be modelled after real animals like Giraffe or rhino or croc or ostrich or deer, you struck the nail on its head with the velociraptor - watcher and the TRex - Thunder jaw, something nobody on earth haven't seen moving in flesh.
I really felt playing a horror action game with the music and then environment omg i had a great experience with hzd
I love thunderjaw animation when roaring 😀😀
My fav Horizon machine is the watchers. They remind me of the Jurassic Park raptors
I love the fact that although all of them this way looked like there where almost the same size you can kinda see witch ones are bigger than the others
1:17 I’ve never seen the grazier’s foot scratch before, but that’s adorable
The designs, attacks, attack animations, hurt animations, knocked down animations and overall animations are top notch, the best out of any game out there.
I love HZD and can’t wait for HFW.🤙🏽
I remember Fighting all these guys. It was so cool to see the way they moved. Except the couple times when I glitched them. lol
Really good animations. It's hard telling the size of each machine when you've seen the game for the first time
To this day, this was the only game that could generally make me scared when I saw a new machine which I didn't encounter yet...
Never had this type of experience in any other game yet! I really felt like I was inside the world you guys created!
I always thought the Longleg has the coolest sounds. This game is amazing
Imagine these machined like ALL if the machines were real
Maybe it's because I never saw it fight from a distance but I never noticed how the Stormbird uses its tail like a whip.
This game was so good in every single way, i really noticed the animations were good but i guess i was so imersed i didn't even payed attention to them, i was focusing too much on how to kill the robots, man these animations are on another fucking level
WOW WOW WOW!
Other machines: attacking, dodging, wallking, running, roaring, jumping, flying
Tallneck: *J U S T W A L K I N G*
that Tallneck roaming $exy af like...
Inspired by giraffes
The grazer animations are my absolute favourite. Especially how overly dramatic they limp away when they are just by an arrow
This looks like some kind of promotion video a cauldron would make to present these robots, like what Boston Dynamics would make to present what Atlas could do.
This is and always will be my favorite game of all time
Aight
Nautikient21 Aight
Love the horse robot animations
Ah..I understand now why I kept dying when Stormbird swing it's tail. Never realise the tip of the tail can be extended.
I love how everything is on rythim
Haha.. that was actually pretty hard to edit and get it right 😋 glad you picked up on that..
Absolutely fantastic work
Such beautiful and fluent movement. The machines felt so alive instead of so mechanical as one would expect. And it works brilliantly. Best wishes to your career as an animator. Hope to see more such work in the future.
Thank you so much.. really appreciate the kind words and support
I just discovered this game. Its awesome! Terrific job!
Thanks.. glad you’ve had fun with the game
I am so thankful for the watchers feet animation for jump attacking (that looks like this Longleg's feet on 0:21 ) it's just so adorable
Watching all these reels pop up, the animation team was on fire. You guys were the real stars.
The animations are even more gorgeous when the camera is still.
Thank you
@@richardoud Great job. Best of luck with your career!
I watched this video and dreamed of an animator.I want to study hard and work with you.Make a more wonderful piece of work.Good luck
Wait, you are the author of these amazing robo-animals? Man, you have my deepest respect, well done...
Can't wait to see you and your team GLORIOUS works in the sequel
these are so cool my guy, so much personality put into each of them. Makes me want to pet them lmao
You can tell that they put a lot of detail into the robots more than the humans combat
I fricking love this game and all the robots
I like how during Thunderjaw attacks, his eyes, mouth and jaws move
why is it so satisfying... :) love the game, second playthrough soon :D
Thank you so much.. happy to hear you enjoyed it enough to go a second round
This is gorgeous!
looks fantastic Richard, can`t wait to play the sequel :D
Thanks buddy.. hope you’re doing well! Can’t wait to hear what you think of Forbidden West 👍🏼
@@richardoud oh man I am dying waiting for this game...it look fantastic 😁
I play horizon
And its hilarious to just see all of these machines attack with the blue lights
Great game, great design works!!
The only way someone could thumbs this down is purely out of jealousy. Astonishing work. I love how some have the particle effects added too.
Thank you for your service. I love the games.
This is awesome. Thank you for your amazing work!
Absolutely stunning!
I wish that in horizon forbidden west the animation will let us feel the game like we're really fighting dynamically in reality
Incredible.
Lol the grazer was scratching its head with its legs haha
The grazer is the cutest machine there change my mind
I think watchers are just little robot raptors. They be cute too.
This is just so good!
I love scéne when grazer starts scratching his ear
Wow Richard, dit ziet er echt GEWELDIG uit!, bedankt voor deze nominale game ervaring
These are AMAZING!
Amazing i swear
One of the best games i ever played
Glad you enjoyed it
Damn! I'd love to see the rigs of those things. Impressive work.
I love this animation!!! Did you mind share these modeling with me?
The story so rich, a perfect sci fi prophecy! If any game is worth making a big very high budget film from this is absolutely it! With the sudden realisation we are entering the age of AI, it would sell very well to an adult audience.
Damn that’s an inspiration right there good ass job
The thunder jaw was always my favorite machine! I would always call the machines Robo this and robo that! So I always referred the thunderJaw as “Robo T-Rex”! Good times!
AWESOME WORK! Just freakin' amazing!
Thanks a lot!
Very awesome man.
I love how the watcher's just seeing two machines doing there thing on 1:02
Great game!!! Thanks for the insane effort!
Incredible Animation!!!! These all become so realistic!!! What a Fantastic Job!!!!
Thanks for the kind words
Nice !😎
