Unknown to most students and alumni there is an Office of Tradition at ND. Each time something new happens the office evaluates the incident and it decides whether or not it will become an "Official" ND tradition. There is an underground catalog of traditions one can reference if one wishes to propose a new tradition. Unfortunately, the link to the office communications has been broken. Notwithstanding, new traditions appear from time to time in a random manner. Inconvenient old traditions fade away without prior notice. :) PhD '65
One very fine tradition that they killed was the pep rallies in the Old Fieldhouse or even in Stepan Center. They were not these Disney-fied productions of today. They were led by the students and totally out of control. The band would march around campus to gather students from the dorms then squeeze into the Fieldhouse with the help of the Meat Squad. The speakers could hardly be heard. The Notre Dame culture was stronger in those days because there were no girls around. Bill Weber '72

Most people don't know anything about Notre Dame beyond football Saturdays. That's not how most of life at Notre Dame is. BA, '72.
