Great tight-shots on the internal details!
This impresses a pilot to respect the fragility of light GA airplanes.

Great use of two minutes - thanks for showing us how this works, Jon!

As a Cherokee owner, I always check both up and down as well as fore and aft on both sides of the stabilator during the preflight. Also, I'm sure there are many critical things on our planes held together with something smaller than we would expect....

Thanks for giving me one more thing to consider on my next preflight. Any more positive thoughts?

There is a check you can do. Grab the outermost edge of the stabilator an apply about 10 lbs of pressure up-down- forward- backward. There should be zero play. I do this check on all elevators as a basic security check. I have caught about 1/2 inch play in a arrow that was a worn out bearing.

That is a bit disconcerting seeing what little holds all that on, the pressure of air on them must be hard on them. However, it has worked for a long time, so I suppose it is all that is required. Worth a few extra checks though and checking for the bolts being worn, like the idea of the locking marker fluid.

lol, you think those bolts are disconcerting? Look at the pin that holds the horizontal stabilizer on most any glider. One little 1/4" pin rotates and pulls out to remove the entire horizontal stabilizer on the Blanik L-23. But....it works!

Love your videos, we have an extra nylon threaded nut to act as a locking nut as well just for some more reassurance on the Tecnam P92 Echo super

I have to say....those two bolts by there location would indicate the bottom of the bracket on each side is secured by another fastener. Possibly a slot or pushes into something...

Looks like I'll be obsessively checking stabilator movement during preflights now - signed a student pilot in an older Warrior.

I love this kinda stuff. If they let me (they shouldn't) I'd take every plane I fly apart to see how it works. I've always been that kid. Only thing better is cutaways. I have an unhealthy obsession with mechanical cut away displays.

An3 bolts have a shear strength in the neighborhood of 2000 lbs. How much load do you think a tab can generate? An5 bolts are up around 12000 lbs and these are in double shear so they can take twice the load. When you actually do the math you will find those bolts have LOTS of margin. Probably a lot more than the stab spar.

I've never seen my tail cone off on my Archer. Looking to do an owner assist next year to learn these types of things. Looks like the bold at 1:44 is to adjust the stop point maybe? Cool to see. Ty.

Youd have to unclog the screw jack from the tail flap and move the screw jack without moving the barrel to adjust the start stop

I have lot of hours in a warrior and I always check that bolt on the stabilator. But man after seeing this video I'm still a little freaked out by how little metL is actually holding that thing on. Jam my rudder or my ailerons all day long but if you lose elevator, well it's going to be a bad day indeed

    Thatz crazy...
How small those bolts are? ...
Guess all that matters is that it's time tested and that it works! 😉🤞

Yesterday it seemed like I need to turn the wheel a ton of times before it “caught” and started to trim down. Any ideas why this was?

I have been trying to find some information on the aerodynamics of the trim tab on a stabliator but have not found anything yet. We know that when you pitch a Cessna for a climb, the elevator goes up and the trim tab goes down to maintain to upward force on the elevator. But when you pull back on the yoke of a Piper, the stabilator goes up and the trim tab move upward as well. I understand the aerodynamics of a Cessna elevator/trim tab but not the piper stabilator/trim tab. Can anyone explain this? Or point me in the direction of information?
